8/13 Shore's WWE Superstars Live Coverage: Sheamus vs. Goldust, Kofi Kingston and Mickie James vs. Rosa Mendes and Carlito, and John Morrison vs. David Hart Smith
Aug 13, 2009 - 07:00 PM

Superstars on WGN America
Taped in Calgary and Edmonton, Canada.

[Q1]The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Todd Grisham and Jim Ross welcomed us to Superstars as Smackdown is first on the lineup…John Morrison made his entrance to a good pop. David Hart Smith was out with Natalya next to hometown cheers…

1. John Morrison defeated David Hart Smith (w/Natalya) at 11:14. The two men started off with mat wrestling and quick reversals. Morrison rolled across Smith’s back into a hip toss and locked in an arm bar. Smith backed Morrison to the ropes and broke dirty. Smith took control and worked power. Morrison slid under a clothesline attempt and hit an elbow. He followed with a standing drop kick and Smith rolled to the floor. Morrison went to the top, but Natalya stood in between him and Smith. Morrison told her to move and he wouldn’t into the break…[C]

Back at 6:45, Morrison kicked a charging Smith. He reversed several power setups, but Smith hit two giant elbows for two. Smith locked in a chin lock. Morrison escaped and went to the top. Smith climbed the ropes and hit a superplex for two. Wow. Morrison fought back from a whip and hit a Pele kick. Morrison hit a standing shooting star press for two. Morrison rolled Smith up for two. Smithy tackled Morrison and covered. They did the push up-flip into the backslide move. It has a name but I don’t know it. Smith hit a powerslam somehow for two.

Smith worked strikes on Morrison, but missed a leg drop. He ducked Morrison’s knee and roiled him up for two. Morrison hit another amazing kick and setup for Starship Pain. Smith hopped up and clubbed Morrison from behind. He grabbed Morison for a belly to back, but Morrison landed on his feet and hit the Chuck kick. He drug Smith to the corner and hit Starship Pain for the win.

[Q2]Post match, , a video recapped the end of the match as the announce team told Punk to get ready for Morrison tomorrow night…The Ask the Divas video aired…Sheamus was shown backstage heading towards the ring…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Wow, Smith is either better than we thought, or John Morrison can carry anyone. Solid, fun, entertaining, everything you could hope for in an opening match. Smackdown has all of the stars folks. Keep watching.

Back from commercial, Goldust made his ring entrance as Josh Matthews and Matt Striker took over on commentary. A video recapped this same match on ECW. Sheamus made his ring entrance. Dear God how terrible is his music?…

2. Goldust defeated Sheamus at 11:37. Quick ties ups and push offs to start. They pushed each other and traded blows. Sheamus got the better and beat Goldust to the ground. Goldust fought back and stomped a mud hole in Sheamus in the corner. Sheamus escaped to the crowd and sold the attack. The ref admonished Sheamus and Goldust called for him to get back in the ring into the break…[C]

Back from commercial at 4:57, Sheamus had Goldust in an armbar. A video showed how Sheamus had dropped Goldust on the stairs during the break. Goldust reversed a corner whip, but Sheamus bounded out and hit a clothesline for two. He hit a gutbuster for two. Goldust got a punch in and tried to climb the ropes, but Sheamus knocked him to the floor.

[Q3]Sheamus went out after him and dropped Goldust on the rail for a hangman. He rolled Goldust back in the ring for two. He dropped three big elbows for two and locked in a rest hold. Goldust hulked up and punched out. He hit an atomic drop and went for a splash, but Sheamus pulled his knees up and covered for two.

The crowd chanted for Goldust as Sheamus stomped on him. Goldust and ran the ropes to hit a bulldog. Goldust worked his offense. He hit a powerslam for two. He went to the top and Sheamus tried to sweep the leg, but Goldust held his ground. He hit a cross body, but Sheamus rolled through for two. They hit big boots on each other. Sheamus made his feet first. He stood Goldust up, but Goldust hooked an inside cradle for the win. Post match, a video recapped the end of the match…The announce team hyped the main event…[C]

Shore’s Slant: That was the first time that I have seen Sheamus wrestle. He looks like an idiot. The hair is way too long, and he needs a little spray on tan or something (Yes, I get that he’s Irish, but still). That being said, wow. This match shocked the hell out of me. I don’t know if I’m just into wrestling tonight or what, but that match entertained the hell out of me. It’s not an instant classic, hell it’s not even a classic after time, but it was fun and not sloppy at all. Nice work by both guys.

Back from commercial, a “Kane is dangerous” video aired…Back ringside, Michael “Cole-train” and Jerry “The King” Lawler took over on commentary. They introed the Raw Rebound. The video covered the Orton/Show and Jericho/Cena matches…

[Q4]Mickie James made her ring entrance, followed by Kofi Kingston. They played to the crowd into the break…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Didn’t the Street Fighter video game have an Indian (from India) that could stretch his arms and legs and went “Boom, Boom?” Seriously, somebody help me out here.

Back from commercial, Carlito and Rosa Mendes came out together. Lawler was cracking on Carlito’s hair…

3. Rosa Mendes and Carlito defeated Mickie James and Kofi Kingston at 6:00. The women attacked each other before the bell rang, so the men started out. Kofi hit a couple of quick rollups and said he missed winning by “that much.” Carlito promptly beat Kingston down. He hit a knee to the face for two. He tried to toss Kofi from the ring, but he caught the ropes and went on offense.

Kofi tried for his Boom Boom Leg Drop, but Carlito tagged out. Mickie ran in and drug Rosa into the ring. She hit a snap mare and a sitdown drop kick for two. Rosa fought out and locked in a chin lock, but Mickie hit a chin buster to break. Rosa tagged out and Kingston hit a springboard axe handle.

The two men worked quick offense. Kofi went to the top and hit a HUGE flying cross body for two. Mickie took out Rosa and Kofi tried to jump on Carlito in the corner. Carlito moved and Kofi hit the top like he was doing Starship pain. Carlito hit the backstabber in the corner for the win. Post match, the heels celebrated to end the show…[C]

Shore’s Slant: An OK match that had the misfortune of following two very good matches. Carlito and Kofi can really work well together and Rosa Mendes has me hopeful for the women on Raw. Did you see that crossbody? He was in the air forever. Another stellar showing from the Thursday show. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow for Smackdown!
