8/4 Twilling's WWE "ECW on Syfy" Live Coverage: Christian vs. Tommy Dreamer in an Extreme Rules match for the ECW Championship, latest edition of the Abraham Washington Show
By Rich Twilling Aug 4, 2009 - 09:00 PM |
|
WWE “ECW on Syfy”
Taped earlier tonight in Long Island, N.Y.
[Q1] Josh Matthews welcomed us to ECW and a graphic for Christian vs. Tommy Dreamer was shown. The opening video aired and the fireworks did not light up the stage because it was set up for the Abraham Washington Show. Matt Striker joined Matthews on commentary. Tony Chimel introduced Abraham “The Rock” Washington, who came out to zero reaction...
Washington looks like The Rock and sounds like Jonathan Coachman. On the Titantron behind Abraham, a blinking “Applause” sign appeared. Funny. Abe finally garnered a reaction out of the crowd by saying he was excited about coming to New York, but disappointed about coming to Long Island. Washington invited our next President, Sarah Palin, to be a guest on his show.
Zack Ryder’s music hit and he received a nice pop from his hometown crowd. He laid down on Washington’s couch. They went back and forth. Ryder said hello to his girlfriend. Abe said Shelton Benjamin was supposed to be his guest and he only booked him because Tiffany forced him to. Ryder and Washington agreed that Shelton was boring.
Benjamin’s music hit and he came out with a microphone. Shelton said he going to “speak Smurf.” He told Ryder and Washington they could go “Smurf themselves.” Wow. Ryder and Benjamin went nose to nose. Washington said he was going to have “Abraham Washington Idol” and both men would sing.
Ryder sang “I Only Want To Be With You” by Hootie and the Blowfish. Ryder sang a line or two, sucked, and forgot the words. Shelton followed up and actually did a pretty nice job. Ryder attacked him from behind and said Shelton was now singing the blues. “Woo woo woo.” Shelton came back and beat up Ryder...
Twill’s Two Cents: That was a mess. Anytime Shelton Benjamin is required to save a segment on the microphone, you know you are in trouble. Also, all three guys are heel and all three guys played both heel and babyface during the segment. Finally, call me crazy, but it bothered me that two wrestlers on a wrestling show could not figure out a way to “settle things.”
Ezekiel Jackson was shown walking through the backstage area... [C]
[Q2] 1. Ezekiel Jackson defeated Danny Danger in :35. Zeke squashed Danger with a punt kick and his finisher...
Vladimir Kozlov came out to the ring hit a chokeslam on Danger. Zeke hit one more super Rock Bottom before taking off...
Twill’s Two Cents: I like the slow build here and I hope it leads to something big.
Backstage, Tiffany told the Bella Twins she was glad to have them in ECW. She then ran into a stagehand. She walked off to take a call and a runaway equipment box was rolling downhill toward the stage girl. The Hurricane swooped in and saved the day. The girl and a returning Tiffany talked about it. Paul Burchill walked up, looked directly into the camera and said, “This is ridiculous.” ... [C]
Did you know? WWE TV is available in over thirty languages and 145 countries. I bet Abraham Washington is boring is every one of them...
2. Sheamus defeated Goldust in 4:41. Striker referred to Sheamus as a big star. I’ve had high hopes for the guy since before he appeared on television. Sheamus started in early on the arm and shoulder and successfully worked on it with an armbar. He hit a nice move that started as a belly to belly suplex but he dropped the arm across the top rope.
[Q3] Goldust almost stole the win with a schoolboy but Sheamus went right back to the arm. Goldust fought back and enjoyed an offensive flurry that included all of his spots. He scored a nearfall with a powerslam. Goldust went to the second rope but Sheamus pulled his ankle out from under him to earn the win...
Sheamus grabbed the mic and from the floor said, “I came to ECW in search of gold, but all they gave me was dust.” Goldust attacked him from behind and they were pulled apart...
Twill’s Two Cents: Good match. Sheamus is fun to watch in the ring and he has a good (unique) look, so all he needs is a personality that will sell. He is old school in the ring and can work a heel style, so hopefully his personality comes through too.
A graphic for Christian vs. Dreamer was shown... [C]
Footage aired of the Jeff Hardy vs. John Morrison World Heavyweight Championship match from last week’s Smackdown, a match that you have to see if you haven’t yet. Morrison may not have won the title, but he is arguably a bigger star by losing that particular match. Perhaps even better than the match was C.M. Punk’s attack of Hardy afterwards. A graphic for Hardy vs. Punk for this Friday was shown...
Matthews and Striker interviewed Tommy Dreamer, who was backstage. Dreamer cut a promo saying he would win back the ECW Title tonight in front of his “extreme peeps.” Christian was shown walking through the backstage area holding a car door... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: If you bring a car door to a fight, you are either really badass or really scared.
[Q8] Tommy Dreamer came out to the ring with a hotdog cart. What type of weird ass fight are these two planning to have? The announcers hyped the 7-11 cup promotion. Striker said “I’ve been drinking Slurpees out of Edge all week.” Funny. Much better than Michael Cole saying he wanted the John Cena cup while Jerry Lawler coveted the Kelly Kelly cup...
3. Christian defeated Tommy Dreamer in an Extreme Rules match to retain the ECW Championship in 16:03. Tony Chimel handled the in ring title introductions. They fought with weapons early on. Christian broke a crutch over Dreamer’s back. He then ran toward Dreamer, but he moved and Christian ran over the hot dog cart, hard.
Dreamer hit Christian with a condiments bin. He then grabbed a hot dog, took a bite, and rammed the rest of it into Christian’s face. He slammed Christian’s head into the cart as the show went to its final commercial... [C]
Mike Knox vs. Rey Mysterio was hyped for WWE Superstars this Thursday...
Back from commercial, Dreamer scored a nearfall. Tommy tried the corner Irish whip and bulldog combination, but Christian countered the Irish whip and hit a backhanded garbage can lid shot to the head for a two count. On the floor, Christian took a sick looking backdrop.
Dreamer threw Christian into the crowd and approached him with a garbage can. Christian hit a springboard dropkick into the can into Dreamer. “Let’s go Christian let’s go Dreamer” chants rang through the crowd. The can was set up with the opening facing the ring. Dreamer whipped him into the can and hit a Singapore cane pump handle suplex for a two count.
[Overrun] Christian went to the middle rope with a garbage can and threw it on top of Dreamer’s head. With two cans on the mat, Christian tried a tornado DDT, but Dreamer threw him off face down into the cans for a two count. Dreamer hit his tree of woe spot but changed it up with a crutch shot to the garbage can set up in front of Christian’s face.
Dreamer tried the DDT but Christian countered with a few weapons shots. Christian went to the floor and slid the car door into the ring. He ran at Dreamer with the door and Dreamer swung the lid at him, knocking the door on top of Christian. He tried a piledriver but Christian reversed it into the Killswitch on the door for the win...
Twill’s Two Cents: Very enjoyable match. Dreamer is always in his element in a match like this and Christian is somebody I could watch in any type of match for an hour. The last few minutes with the many nearfalls were very entertaining. This wasn’t anything we haven’t seen before (except for the car door), but I enjoyed it. Good stuff.
