WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Bakersfield, Calif.
[Q1] Jim Rss welcomed us to SD and hyped the IC title main event. Jeff Hardy came out to a huge pop and he had an eye patch on his eye. Jeff thanked the fans and said that last week tragedy struck. A video was shown of last week’s tag match. He talked about how his eye was on fire and he talked about how Punk didn’t check on him later that night. He said unlike Punk he don’t quit, forfeit matches or kick referees in the back. He lifted the patch and said that the injury is as serious that it is going to be.
1. Kane defeated Jeff Hardy 12:00. The match started with Jeff gaining the early advantage with punches, a baseball slide and a moonsault outside of the ring. Kane came back with an uppercut for a near fall. Jeff went for a Twist of Fate, but Kane countered by throwing him on the ropes and giving Jeff a big boot. [C]
The show returned with Kane still dominating Jeff with a nasty low dropkick for a nearfall. Kane applied a bear hug in the middle of the ring and Jeff countered out with a jawbreaker. Jeff hit the double leg drop to Kane’s abs for a one count. Kane hit a gut buster to Jeff for a nearfall. Then he threw Jeff into the ring post. He hit a baseball slide to Jeff’s back for a nearfall.
[Q2] Kane hit some punches and a backbreaker for a nearfall. Then, Kane applied a body scissors on Jeff. Jeff broke out of it with a spinning heel kick. He ran to Kane but Kane caught him with side slam for a nearfall. Jeff attempted a Twist of Fate of the rope but Kane pushed him off. Jeff hit the Poetry in Motion and DDT for a nearfall. Jeff hit a Whisper in the Wind for a nearfall. Jeff hit the Twist of Fate and C.M. Punk came out to distract Jeff. Kane choke slammed Jeff for the victory. [C]
Mind of Marv: This was a good opening match but reading the spoilers, I knew it was going to be a dirty win. But Kane looks like his old self and if they want to put him in the main event picture to get him out of the mid-card hole, I have no problem at all.
Cryme Tyme’s Word Up was shown and the word of the week is "Bromance". CT and Eve talked about the different bromances in Hollywood and Eve thought CT was a bromance but they said they are a brotherhood. Then Jesse comes out again trying to be Jeezy again which lead to him getting tricked by Eve. She pushed him and locked him in a gate. He mentioned that he had Sega Genesis with two controllers.
Backstage, Teddy Long and John Morrison were talking about the Michael Jackson karaoke session they had last week. Morrison mentioned he still wanted the winner of the world title match at the Night of Champions and Long said he is taking it in consideration. A strange noise was heard and Long and Morrison didn’t know what it was. Dolph Ziggler came out of a closet and Morrison said it’s about time that he came out of the closet. Then Maria came out of nowhere out of the closet and said good luck out there and smacked Ziggler’s ass. [C]
Mind of Marv: I’m tempted to call Maria a garden tool, but let’s keep this report PG.
[Q3] 2. Dolph Ziggler pinned John Morrison 6:07. The match began pretty technical with takedown and locks to each other. Ziggler was talking shit and Morrison hit a back elbow and flying crossbody. Ziggler spun and kicked Morrison in the head for a nearfall. JR said that Ziggler is like Mr. Perfect and Rick Rude and Morrison is like a young Shawn Michaels. Ziggler hit a million dollar knee lift and back suplex for a nearfall. Ziggler place Morrison in a full nelson and Morrison countered with a Pele kick and a clothesline. Morrison hit a running knee for a nearfall.
Morrison hit a missile drop kick for a nearfall. Morrison went for a spinning DDT but Ziggler countered with a small package while grabbing the tights for the win. They hyped the IC title main event…[C]
Mind of Marv: People, you are looking at two stars in the making. I loved the match but this could have been at least ten minutes. This is an interesting upper mid-card feud and I praise the bookers for this match, which is rare in my case.
[Q4] The show returned with R-Truth outside of the arena acting like an ass with fake teeth and bothering people. He called himself Pretty Ricky and he hopped gates and eventually got thrown out.
Mind of Marv: If this becomes an ongoing thing, release him NOW.
3. Melina and Eve Torres defeated Women’s Champion Michelle McCool and Layla in 4:20. Eve and Layla began the match with back and forth action. Eve hit a baseball slide to Layla to knock her out of the ring. McCool took one of those chicken legs of hers and kicked Eve outside of the ring. McCool got in the match and applied a figure four head lock to Eve. Eve broke out and hit a bulldog to McCool. Melina got tagged in and hit instant offense on Layla. Melina rolled up Layla for the win.
Post match, Melina and McCool started to attack each other and had to be broken up. Punk vs. Khali is next…[C]
Mind of Marv: Sloppy match. If they actually took the women’s division seriously, Melina and McCool would be money. McCool’s heel tendencies are great but she gets NO HEAT. When she came out, they had to boost boos to supplement the total silence she was getting.
The Smack of the Night was shown from last week’s main event. Jeff Hardy is ringside for the match and Punk comes out to a tweener reaction. Punk asked Jeff if he was proud of himself because he had a lot of nerve to leave him last week. Punk brought out some prescription eye drops and said he has to apply it three times a day. He started to rip Jeff about his past drug problems. He said that Jeff has two strikes and he has none. He said that that he was never suspended or been to a rehab center. He said that his chances of beating him at Night of Champions are: ZERO.
Mind of Marv: Make Punk a full fledge heel already…
[Q5] 4. World Heavyweight Champion C.M. Punk and The Great Khali ended in an apparent no-contest in 2:45. Punk started the match with kicks but Khali did his usual chopping to Punk. Punk hit a springboard to Khali for a nearfall. Punk hit the high knee but Khali countered the bulldog by chopping him. Khali hit a Punjabi Plunge and Kane came out and interrupted with a steel chair. Singh gave Khali a chair and Kane took the first strike. Khali blocked the second attempt and hit Kane with the chair. [C]
Mind of Marv: Oh lord. This is one corny feud in the making. Khali can’t sell moves, he only has about 3 moves, and Kane has to endure this? This is gonna suck…
[Q6]5. The Hart Dynasty defeated Cryme Tyme 2:52. JTG and Kidd started the matchup. JTG hit a botched leg drop and neck breaker. JTG elbowed DH and tossed Kidd out of the ring. DH got tagged in and started to attack JTG and hit a vertical suplex for a nearfall. Shad got the tag and turned into Cena with the shoulder blocks and weak offense. Natalya distracted the referee while Kidd chop blocked Shad and DH clotheslined him for the quick win. [C]
Mind of Marv: Cheap win for the Hart Dynasty, but at least they aren’t down 2-0 to Cryme Tyme or we would have to push the panic button on this faction. But hopefully this should make the unified tag title picture a little interesting since Edge is out. I suggest a tournament but the tag team picture in WWE doesn’t really exist.
The RAW rebound was shown and Chris Jericho made his entrance. Jericho said he is the best in the world and said that he is not satisfied. He ran down his title credentials and said after he wins tonight, he will be the IC champ for the 10th time. He said the sweetest thing tonight will be defeating their hero, Rey Mysterio. [C]
[Q7] 6. Rey Mysterio defeated Chris Jericho to retain the Intercontinental Title in 23:00. Jericho started the match with a shoulder block. Jericho punched and head butted Rey. Jericho threw Rey outside of the ring. Rey hit a crossbody to Jericho outside of the ring. Jericho hit a tilt-o-whirl backbreaker for a nearfall. Jericho threw Rey into the ring post. [C]
The show returned with Jericho baseball sliding Rey out of the ring. Jericho applied a headlock and Rey countered with an Irish whip into an insurghi. Jericho hit a spinning torture rack for a nearfall. Jericho taunted Rey and began to work on his neck.
Rey hit a springboard crossbody and a bulldog for a nearfall. Jericho caught Rey for a power bomb for a nearfall. Rey ran to the top rope for a head scissors but Jericho countered with the Walls of Jericho. Jericho and Rey exchanged near falls. Rey went for a 619 but Jericho played with the ropes and he fell out of the ring. [C]
[Q8] Jericho attacked Rey with a head butt and an Irish whip for a nearfall. Rey tried some offense but he got Irish whipped and took another spinning torture rack for a nearfall. Jericho worked on Rey’s back and Rey countered with a roll up for a nearfall. Rey hit a hurricrana and kicked Jericho. Rey applied a West Coast Pop for a nearfall.
Jericho hit an inverted power bomb for a nearfall. Jericho hit a bulldog and went for a Lionsault but Rey countered out. Jericho then applied the Walls of Jericho. Rey broke out by crawling to the ropes. Rey hit a springboard moonsault outside of the ring. Rey went from a crossbody but Jericho hit a Codebreaker in the air for a nearfall. Jericho yelled stayed down and kicked him twice. Rey hit the 619 to retain the IC title.
Post match, Edge came out and attacked Rey. Dolph Ziggler came out also to interfere. Edge held Mysterio and Jericho gave him another Codebreaker. Ziggler hit his finisher on Mysterio to end the show.
Mind of Marv: Classic main event. I loved every minute of this match and it’s definitely the feud of the year. I hate to see this feud end here but Ziggler and Mysterio IC title feud has money written on it. Ziggler is getting a mega push and I hate to constantly reiterate this but Raw need to learn from the Smackdown. The feuds are ten times better and it doesn’t bore the hell out of me. Fresh up the feuds and Raw can may be able to develop some kind of decency. This was indeed an excellent show and gets an "A" from me.
