7/3 Hermanstyne's WWE Smackdown Coverage: The Hart Dynasty Debuts, Kane Returns, Divas Tag Action, Edge and Jericho vs. Jeff Hardy and C.M. Punk, Finlay vs. Ricky Ortiz
Jul 4, 2009 - 05:47 AM

WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Fresno, Calif.

[Q1] The opening montage aired and CM Punk came out to heel heat. Punk says everyone is talking about the controversy and he’s sick and tired of it. He said that he purposely hit the official to get DQ’ed and he showed the video to prove his point. He said it was pretty obvious that his foot was under the rope and said the official was human and he made a mistake. He said if the official didn’t see his foot he would have lost the title. He said he received a eye injury and the video was shown of Punk kicking the official.

The crowd continued to give him heat and Punk said that his eye was damaged. He said he prides himself and he is a man of honor. He said that he doesn’t take shortcuts and Jeff should have every reason to be frustrated. Punk said its no excuse for Jeff to attack him and video was shown of the attack. Punk shook his head and the crowd gave him more heat. He said that he has principles and integrity. He said what Jeff did to him is deliberate. He said that Jeff has been going around to anyone who would listen demanding that he should get a rematch. Punk said that’s fine but he wants an apology and he wants it right now.

Teddy Long comes out and said that he is getting to the point. Long said that Punk was right and they had a classic match and they will have a rematch at the Night of Champions. Punk still wanted his apology but Long said that Vince was pleased that Long shook things up. He said that Vince wants to shake things up and the main event for tonight was Edge and Jericho vs. Punk and Jeff Hardy.

The crowd cheered and Jeff Hardy comes out to a huge pop. Jeff said he doesn’t want to hear any excuses and he knew that Punk intentionally kicked the official. And he asked what does Straight Edge mean and he said that it meant a liar. Jeff said he can see right through Punk. Punk said unless the next words are I’m sorry, he can shut up. Jeff said that that he would apologize for beating him at Night of Champions and he proceeded to shove Punk.

Punk told Long that it was cool but he said that Jeff and he need to be on the same page because Edge and Jericho will tear them apart. He said that they are already at a disadvantage because of his eye injury and the crowd booed. He said that he had to forfeit a match and he is not forfeiting anything. He said he cans see it in Jeff’s face that he wants to punch him in the face and he can see his temper boiling over. He said that his best advice is to just say no. [C]

Mind of Marv: Great opening segment. I like this slow motion heel turn for Punk. It makes things interesting for this feud. I wonder if the feud will be long term or will Jeff actually say NO to a contract extension.

The show returns with Ricky Ortiz already in the ring. Finlay comes out to a good pop. Grisham hyped the 15 person trade. Ortiz asked if Finlay misses his buddy and he should get rid of the frown and should Rally Up. Finlay smacked him and the match is underway.

[Q2]1. Finlay defeated Ricky Ortiz in 2:25. Finlay got the early advantage by knocking Ortiz outside of the ring. Ortiz power slammed Finlay outside of the ring. Ortiz tried to attack Finlay on the side but Ortiz ran into the pole. Finlay took advantage with the Rolling Hills for a near fall. Ortiz attempted a gut wrench but Finlay countered with a Celtic Cross for the quick win.

Mind of Marv: Finlay is a wonder to work with the young stars but I never liked Ricky Ortiz. He still needs some seasoning and his heel gimmick is weak.

Backstage, Dolph Ziggler was doing pushups and Maria came and introduced herself. Maria said that she had fun with Dolph and they said go out again. Maria said good luck and Dolph said he may get lucky…[C]

Mind of Marv: Maria and Ziggler?? You’re kidding me right? Ugh…

The Kane and Mysterio match was hyped for later tonight. The video of Kane’s return at the Bash was shown. Truth made his “skippin and jumpin” weak ass entrance…

[Q3]2. Dolph Ziggler defeated R-Truth in 3:05. Ziggler said what’s up now and attacked Truth. Ziggler hit a nice slam to Truth and placed him in a Full Nelson. Ziggler hit some punches and elbows to Truth for a near fall. Ziggler put the Full Nelson back on Truth and Truth countered some clotheslines. Truth hit a power slam for a near fall. Truth hit a decent kick to Ziggler. Ziggler hit his finisher for the win.

Mind of Marv: Not bad for a three minute match. This show is so far pretty OK. Ziggler is winning points from Marv and he should be a nice upper mid-card addition to this loaded roster. His finisher is like an inverted version of Shelton Benjamin’s Paydirt finisher.

The main event was hyped…[C]

The show returned with Cryme Tyme’s “Word Up”. Eve said the word of the day is “Wanksta”. They described some examples and they found fake ass plants and saw Layla talking to some dude in the back. They had some binoculars and they were looking at her nice ass. Eve snatched the binoculars and saw Jimmy Wang Yang smashing some BBQ.

Mind of Marv: JR’s BBQ sauce maybe?

They looked around and found Jesse dressed up like a thug and he came to them. Jesse came out to some weak ass street lines and the segment ended. Rey Mysterio made his entrance…[C]

Mind of Marv: I would of much rather seen John Cena as a wanksta back in 2003 than Jesse right now. And that’s not saying much at all. The traffic must be down on wwe.com that’s why we have to suffer seeing this crap, sigh.

[Q4] 3. Kane defeated Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio in a non title match in 11:10. Mysterio started the match by kicking Kane. Kane clotheslined Mysterio and stomped his head. The crowd chanted 619 and Kane attacked Mysterio for a near fall. Kane applied a headlock and Mysterio got out by kicking Kane. Mysterio attempted a 619 but Kane caught him. Kane tried to choke slam Mysterio but he got out. Kane threw Mysterio into the side of ring. [C]

The show returned with Kane hitting a big boot to Mysterio for a near fall. Kane slanged Mysterio into the ropes and picked him up to slam his back into the pole. Mysterio was almost counted out but he made the ten count. Kane continued to attack Mysterio inside of the ring. Mysterio tried to get some offense but Kane hit an elbow for a near fall. Kane hit a back suplex for a near fall. Kane hit a back breaker to Mysterio but Mysterio scarred Kane’s eyes to drive Kane’s head into the turnbuckle. Mysterio hit his offense for two near falls.

Mysterio went to the top rope but Kane hit an uppercut for a near fall. Kane tried to choke slam Mysterio but Mysterio countered with a 619. Kane caught Mysterio for the choke slam to win the match.

After the match, Kane tried to attack Mysterio some more but Khali and Singh came out with a steel chair. Khali chased Kane with the steel chair and Kane ran through the crowd. Backstage Josh Matthews interviewed Jericho and Jericho said Mysterio got what he deserves. He said it would be worse when Jericho uses his rematch clause next week. Edge popped up and said it was all about beating a team that wasn’t unified.

[Q5] Jericho said they were the best in the business and they would prove it. And he called Punk a liar and ripped the crowd. He said that it’s a guarantee that they are best force in the WWE. Edge said his thoughts, exactly. [C]

Mind of Marv: This was one of the worst feuds months ago and hopefully it’s not reborn. I mean the match wasn’t bad but these guys just don’t have the chemistry together in the ring. But as far as Jericho and Edge, these guys are one of the small morsels that are making the Raw brand 0.05% worth watching.

The Hart Dynasty made their Smackdown debut and the announcers put them over. Cryme Tyme came out and the announcers absolutely FAILED trying to talk some slang.

4. Cryme Tyme defeated The Hart Dynasty in 4:50. Tyson Kidd and JTG started the match. JTG got the early advantage in the opening seconds with a face buster. DH Smith got the tag and attacked JTG. DH hit a nice belly to belly suplex for a one count. DH applied a headlock and JTG broke out of the lock. Both heels worked on JTG for a while. JTG tried a roll up for a near fall. JTG got the tag to Shad and Kidd to DH. Shad hit is power offense to DH and hit the Money Elbow for a near fall. Shad hit the Magnificent for the win. The Raw rebound was shown…[C]

Mind of Marv: Wow…talk about getting buried on the first night. This sucks because Cryme Tyme has no reason to beat multi generational stars like the Hart Dynasty. Hopefully this is a start up feud with better opponents for the future for the Hart Dynasty but jobbing to Cryme Tyme is a joke, point blank.

[Q6] They announcers hyped the main event and the lovely & thick Layla and the female John Cena made their entrance. Maria and Melina made their entrance. JR started rambling about M&Ms. Grisham got horned up about Melina’s split…

5. Maria and Melina defeated Women’s Champion Michelle McCool and Layla in 3:15. Layla and Melina began the match. Melina got the early advantage and tagged Maria in. Maria dominated until she did a split and McCool got the tag and got aggressive on Maria. The heels started to work on Maria’s leg. Maria tagged Melina got instant offense and hit her standing leg drop finisher on Layla for the win.

Mind of Marv: Endless filler match by the Divas. If WWE was smart, unify both belts and put all the good women’s wrestlers on Smackdown and give Raw the scraps…

[Q7] The Smack of the Night was shown with John Morrison beating Punk last week. Teddy Long and John Morrison were backstage and Morrison said he wants the winner of the match. Long was distracted and started to talk about the BET awards and the Michael Jackson tribute. Next thing you know, they both started a karaoke of Michael Jackson songs...

Mind of Marv: More Michael Hayes writing junk for these guys. Keep the Raw related filler crap to Monday’s so Powell can suffer instead of me, ugh.

Video of the unified tag title changed was shown and the heels made their entrances. The announcers hyped the IC title rematch for next week…[C]

6. Unified Tag Team Champions Edge and Chris Jericho defeated Jeff Hardy and World Heavyweight Champion C.M. Punk in 16:20. Edge and Punk started the match. Punk hit a drop kick to Edge and tagged Jeff in. Jeff threw Edge into the ring post and tagged Punk back in. Punk continued to work on Edge’s arm with an arm bar.

Edge broke out of it and tagged Jericho. Punk hit a scoop slam to Jericho and Punk tagged Jeff with a flying leg drop for a near fall. Jericho got back up with a series of punches. Jeff hit an atomic drop and a leg drop between Jericho’s legs. Punk got back in the match and he worked on Jericho. Jericho tagged back Edge and he head butted Punk. Punk tagged back Jeff and Jeff hit Poetry in Motion. Punk clotheslined Edge and Punk and Jeff stared at each other. [C]

[Q8] The show returned with Edge working on Jeff. Jeff hit an arm drag takeover to Edge and Punk started to rub his eye. Jeff tried to tag Punk but he kept rubbing his eyes. Jeff missed a splash on Edge and Edge tagged Jericho. Jericho attacked Jeff and teased Punk by kicking the ropes. Edge hit a cheap shot on Jeff and Jericho threw Jeff back in the ring. Jeff tried to tag again but Punk keep selling the fake eye injury. Jericho applied a headlock and Jeff broke out. Jericho threw Jeff outside of the ring and the official started the ten count. Jeff tried to tag Punk again but Punk kept selling the eye injury.

Jeff hit the Whisper in the Wind on Jericho and both men were out. The official started the ten count for both men. Jericho tagged in Edge and Jeff hit the Twist of Fate to Edge. Jeff tagged Punk nonchalantly and Punk hit the knee and the bulldog. Edge drove a knee into Punk and Jericho got some cheap shots in.

Jericho got back in the match and started to top with Punk. Both Jericho and Punk hit a double clothesline and the ten count began. Punk tried to tag but Jeff overacted an eye injury. Jericho caught Punk and he tried to put the Walls of Jericho but Punk got out. Jericho blind tagged Edge and Edge speared Punk for the win.

Post match, Edge stomped on Punk and Jeff hit another Twist of Fate on Edge. Jeff got on the ropes and both heels left. Jeff kept faking the eye injury to Punk and screamed to him to end the show.

Mind of Marv: Decent main event and I can see a fatal four way for the belt in the future, I can guarantee that. But the Punk and Hardy match should steal the main event at Night of Champions. The was a OK edition of Smackdown and it gets a B- because the filler was just brutal and I worked 10 hours today and I thought the wrestling would be the perfect fix for tonight.

Twilling will have the Hitlist by the A.M. and everyone should have a great Fourth of July. BBQ, shoot some fireworks and don’t drink and drive. I will be doing double duty next week with ECW (remember it’s on Thursday this coming week only @ 7/6 (CT) before Superstars) and Smackdown next week so send some emails to mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you guys.
