7/2 Shore's WWE Superstars Live Coverage: The Brian Kendrick vs. Santino Marella, Tyler Reks vs. Zack Ryder, John Morrison vs. Charlie Haas, and C.M. Punk vs. Edge
Jul 2, 2009 - 07:00 PM |
|
WWE Superstars on WGN America
Taped in San Jose and Fresno, Calif.
[Q1]The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Michael Cole welcomed us to Superstars. He and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary. Santino Marella made his ring entrance, followed by The Brian Kendrick…
1. Santino Marella defeated The Brian Kendrick at 4:08. The crowd chanted “Santino” and booed TBK at the beginning of the match. Santino rolled out and hit two hip toss/side headlocks in a row. TBK made the ropes, and the fans booed. TBK tossed Santino over the top rope. Santino tried to skin the cat, but TBK grabbed his feet and drop Sanitno on his abdomen. TBK worked the leg. He slapped Santino and called him a loser.
Santino Hulked up and crushed TBK. He charged in on TBK in the corner. TBK raised his feet and kicked Santino in the face. He covered Santino. Santino grabbed the rope on two. TBK argued with the ref. Santino tried to roll him up, but TBK reversed it into a roll up. At two, Santino reversed the reversal and scored the surprise win. Post math, Santino celebrated ringside while TBK stalked him in the ring. The announce team hyped Punk vs. Edge …[C]
Shore’s Slant: “Santino Hulked up” is the saddest thing I have ever had to write. I like Santino, but TBK is three times the worker in the ring and shouldn’t have to job to this comedy act.
Back from commercial, Charlie Haas was in the ring. Todd Grisham and Jim Ross are on commentary. My baby daddy made his entrance. A video recapped the end of the Morrison/Punk match from last week on Smackdown…
[Q2]2. John Morrison defeated. Charlie Haas at 3:00. Haas started out with a couple of strikes. Morrison ducked the third punch. He hit a two hip tosses, followed by a drop kick that spilled Haas to the floor. Morrison teased a plancha. Haas ducked and landed on the apron. Haas stood up, and Morrison jumped back in the ring and hit a mule kick through the bottom rope. Morrison followed to the floor. He tried to walk Haas up the stairs, but Haas swept the feet and Morrison landed on his abs. The steps bent…no, Morrison sold to the stairs. Haas worked strikes and leg scissors on Morrison’s body.
Morrison punched and hit a handstand kick followed by a clothesline and a knee to the face for two. Haas hit a few strikes. He tried to kick Morrison, but Morrison fought back and hit the Moonlight Drive followed by Starship Pain for the win…Zack Ryder was shown backstage, walking towards the ring…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Throw away match to keep Morrison on TV. Good, but let’s put him in a meaningful feud so he doesn’t need this match. Zack Ryder. Oh joy. My favorite gimmick. Ever.
The announce team was now Josh Matthews and Matt Striker. Zack Ryder made his ring entrance, followed by new Superstar, Tyler Reks. Reks is using a surfer gimmick…
2. Zack Ryder defeated Tyler Reks at 2:32. Reks hit a couple of moves at first, but Ryder took control and beat him down, causing a good amount of heat for him. He locked in a side headlock. Reks fought back and hit a belly to back suplex. He ducked a Ryder clothesline and hit him in the gut. Striker had to tell us it was innovative. Reks went to hit a springboard, but Ryder kicked his legs out, causing Reks to land on his head. Ryder followed up with the Zack Attak for the win...
A video hyped the SummerSlam reading program…The announce team hyped the main event…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Looks like Ryder is getting heat, so good for him. I hate his gimmick. Absolutely hate it. But if he can get over with it, good for him. Reks looks very athletic. His gimmick is pretty lame too, but we’ll see how it goes. He certainly has “The Look.” For those of you still wondering what I mean by, “My baby daddy” when Morrison comes out viola.
[Q3]Back from commercial, a Christian video aired…Cole and Lawler are back. Cole actually said, “Speaking of things that have been good, Raw has…” I shit you not. The Raw Rebound video was a recap of Batista’s screwing of Orton from this week…The announce team hyped Cena vs. Hunter on the next Raw…Grisham and JR were back on commentary. They narrated video of The Bash match between Hardy and Punk…Punk made his ring entrance…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Hey Cole, who fed you that line? Sorry, couldn’t resist. Of note, super cool DotNet member MattheWWFanatic sent me a message that said the Santino/TBK match was move for move what he saw at a house show a week and a half ago. Very cool info there.
Back from commercial, Edge and his three hundred belts that make up the Unified Tag Team Championship made their entrance…
4. Edge defeated CM Punk by forfeit at 11:29. Edge started by slapping the “injured” eye of Punk. Punk chased him to the corner and the ref stopped him. Punk hit several kicks, followed by a running knee to the abdomen. He locked in a leg scissors to the abdomen.
[Q4]JR sold the “accidental” kick that Punk hit on the ref at The Bash. Punk continued to work heel moves on Edge. He hooked his arms on a whip and tossed Edge over the rope. Edge landed on the apron, and Punk kicked his feet out. Punk hit a baseball slide, spilling Edge to the floor. He went out and tossed Edge back in the ring. He climbed back in and charged at Edge. Edge hit a big boot and Punk sold it on his “injured” eye. The ref check on the eye into commercial…[C]
Back from commercial at 7:10, Edge continued to work the head and neck. Punk tried to fight out, but Edge hit a flapjack for two. Grisham and JR sold the eye “injury.” Edge locked in an upside down full nelson. Punk got some face heat as he fought out, but it stopped as soon as he took control. He hit an insaguri kick for two. He attempted an underhook suplex, but Edge reversed into an Impaler DDT for two. Edge backed up and went for the spear, but Punk reversed into a swinging neck breaker for two.
Punk went to the apron and hopped to the top. Edge ducked when Punk came off. He turned and charged, but Punk hit a power slam for two. Punk hit the knee in the corner, but Edge pushed off on the bulldog attempt. Punk spun and scooped up Edge for Go To Sleep. Edge slipped off his back and grabbed his face from behind. Punk slipped out of the hold, but JR and Grisham said Edge dug into his face and put his finger in the “bad” eye.
Punk hid in the corner as the ref pulled Edge away. Punk waved his arms and the ref called for the bell. Edge was announced as the winner by forfeit. He left the ring and Josh Matthews went into the ring and asked Punk if he would have quit if it had been a title match. Punk sidestepped the question and said he couldn’t see. Matthews thanked him for his time and wished him a speedy recovery. The announce team continued to sell Punk’s decision as necessary. The trainers tried to exam the eye to end the show…
Shore’s Slant: Good match while it lasted. These two guys at PPV would be great. Of course, the same could be said about a bunch of pairs on Smackdown right now. I don’t think this does anything for Punk but make him look like a…well…punk. Of course it’s hard to get heat when wrestling another heel. How good is his turn? I haven’t seen patience like this from WWE in a long, long time. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow night for Smackdown!
