Jun 19, 2009 - 10:08 PM |
WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Roanoke, VA
[Q1] The opening montage aired and the double main event was featured with: Jeff Hardy vs. Chris Jericho and CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio. Josh Matthews interviewed Jeff Hardy in the ring. A video was shown of the ladder match at the last PPV, Extreme Rules. Jeff went on to say that he couldn’t imagine how he felt to once again win the World Championship. And then, the video was shown of Punk cashing in.
Matthews showed another video from the end of the triple threat match on Raw. Matthews went on to say that Jeff cannot catch a break. Jeff said it was fine and he doesn’t live in the past. He said he will be one on one with Punk at the Bash and he will get his title back. Punk came out and got some boos but it wasn’t that noticeable. Matthews said a lot of people think and feel that he took advantage of Jeff.
Punk elaborated that he took advantage of what was his MITB contract. Punk said: “Nowhere in the rules does it say ‘Do not cash in of Jeff Hardy.” Punk felt that he was offended because people said that he stole the match on Monday and he had never stolen anything in his life. Punk said Jeff knew as well as he did that you didn’t have to be someone’s friend in the ring. Matthews said: “Let’s hear it for the number one contender, Jeff Hardy.” The crowd marked for Jeff. Matthews said the same for Punk and the crowd gave him heat... [C]
Mind of Marv: I am looking forward to this Punk heel turn because it can really do him some good. I really don’t understand why there are some many Jeff Hardy fans, but hey at least he is not as annoying like Cena. I can see this feud going into Summerslamwith Jeff capturing the world title there (if he decides to renew his contract).
[Q2]1. Jeff Hardy defeated Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho via count out in 5:00. Jericho got dropkicked by Jeff and he worked on Jericho in the corner. Jeff went for the mule kick but Jericho moved. Jericho hit a suplex for a near fall and applied an ab stretch to Jeff. Hardy hit a hip toss and tackled Jericho. Jeff then hit a double leg drop to Jericho’s mid-section and hit a dropkick to him. Jeff missed a clothesline but hit Whisper in the Wind for the near fall. Jericho attempted he Walls but Jeff twisted out of the submission hold.
Jeff hit a DDT and went for the Swanton but Jericho rolled out of the ring and Jeff jumped on Jericho outside. Jericho drove Jeff into a rail and then rolled him into the ring. Jericho turned around and Rey Mysterio hit a came hurricanranna that drove Jericho dead into ring post. Rey jumped back into the crowd and sat with two other guys who were impersonators. The ref started the ten count and Jericho was counted out.
After the match, Jericho tried to show the ref Rey and Jeff attacked from behind and hit the Twist of Fate and the Swanton Bomb. Jeff celebrated and Mysterio and his cronies celebrated.
Backstage, Eve and Layla were arguing over hairspray and Maria broke it up. Dolph Ziggler walked up and said they didn’t need to fight over him. Ziggler looked at Layla and said, “Hi, my name is….and she cut him off and said his name was Zach Diggler. Maria said his name was Don Zimmer. Eve said everybody knew his name was Dick, Dick Ziggler. Eve shook Ziggler’s hand and Ziggler left pissed off... [C]
Mind of Marv: This match was too damn short, dang. Smackdown has some many feuds that can rock this brand its ridiculous. But overall, a good TV contest which can lead to a future long term money feud.
[Q3] The show returned with a video of the Ziggler and Khali match from last week.
2. Dolph Ziggler defeated The Great Khali by disqualification in 2:05. 70% of this match was a Khali squash until Ziggler hit a chop block to bring some credibility to this match. Ziggler hit a leg drop to Khali’s head for a near fall. Ziggler tried to take the top turnbuckle off and but the ref put it back on. Ziggler got a chair and he tossed it at Khali who swatted it out of the air. Ziggler fell down and acted like he was knocked out. The ref saw Ziggler down and Khali with the chair and Khali got disqualified... [C]
Mind of Marv: Can we put Ziggler in a meaningful program instead of the tool Khali? RAW has the comedy, so put Khali back on there so Smackdown doesn’t have to suffer with his filler matches.
The RAW Rebound was shown and they hyped the commercial free RAW for Monday. Melina made her entrance and almost busted her shit in the middle of the ring. Melina will defend the Women’s title against Michelle McCool at the Bash.
3. WWE Women’s Champion Melina defeated Alicia Fox in 1:43Nothing much to discuss here. Fox got little offense but Melina dominated with her flexibility. Melina hits her finisher on Fox for the quick and painless win.
Mind of Marv: Look for McCool to win the women’s championship at the Bash and here’s a hint why: Bell tolls, phenom, dead man, female version of John Cena. This shouldn’t be a hard riddle to figure out.
[Q4] Afterwards, McCool hit a big boot to Melina and she tossed Melina to the floor. McCool did her RKO impersonation and kicked Melina’s head into the announce table. She said that she that will destroy Melina and be the first woman to win both women’s titles. McCool and Alicia Fox went up left with smirks. John Morrison and Edge was next... [C]
The show returned with Edge in the ring for a promo. He said that he was screwed out of his title match and he whined about Jeff Hardy. Morrison interrupted and Edge said, “Here’s another kid trying to be me.” Edge asked Morrison if he was Siegfried or Roy. Morrison laughed and said that was pretty entertaining and he couldn’t remember the last time Edge was entertaining.
Morrison mocked Edge and his Canadian accent and Edge yelled at him. Morrison asked “What are you going to complain about next? Silly boots? Bobble head? Bug eyes? Morrison said he was going to give Edge something to complain about and after tonight, Edge would be complaining about how he got his face kicked in by the - Friday Night Delight, John Morrison... [C]
[Q5]4. Edge defeated John Morrison in 16:43. The match began back and forth with the announcers stating that Edge won 27 titles and Morrison having his toughest test in his career. Morrison place Edge in an arm bar in the middle of the ring. Edge got the advantage by punting Morrison in the ribs and worked on him in the corner. Edge continued to work with a chorus of boos from the crowd. Morrison applied a clothesline and dropkick for a near fall. Edge hit a bulldog on Morrison off the ropes... [C]
The match returned with Morrison getting out of a hold but Edge countered with a clothesline. Edge placed a bear hug on Morrison to work on his ribs. Morrison came back with punches and a axe kick to Edge. Morrison hit a backbreaker and grabbed his ribs. Edge missed a dropkick and Morrison hit a nasty knee to Edge’s dome. Edge got to the top rope, but Morrison countered with a Pele kick to Edge. Morrison hit a head scissors to Edge outside of the ring and he dragged Edge back in the ring for a near fall.
Morrison missed the Chuck Kick and Edge applied the Sharpshooter. Morrison grabbed the ropes and went for a cradle for the near fall. Morrison hit a side Russian leg sweep. Morrison went for the Starship Pain but Edge got up and pushed him unto the ropes. Edge went for a spear but Morrison countered with a roll up for a near fall. Edge went the spear again but Morrison countered with the Chuck Kick. Morrison went for the Moonlight drive but Edge countered with a DDT. Morrison hit a DDT of his own to Edge for a near fall. Morrison went for Starship Pain again, but Edge moved and speared Morrison for the win.
Mind of Marv: This was an excellent TV match. Probably one of the best TV matches of the year. Morrison is a star and should be in the title picture now. This can be a nice main event feud in the making if they want to keep Edge out of the title picture and elevate Morrison out of the mid-card.
The announcers’ hype the C.M. Punk and Mysterio match for later…[C]
[Q6] The show returns with the heels already in the ring. Truth and Cryme Tyme came out to Truth’s theme.
5. Cryme Tyme and R-Truth beat Charlie Haas, Shelton Benjamin, and Ricky Ortiz in 4:05. JTG and Ortiz started the match with JTG getting the early advantage. Shad got the tag and worked on Ortiz for a near fall. Shad missed a big boot to Ortiz and Ortiz worked on Shad’s knee. Haas got the tag and worked on Shad’s knee with punches and kicks. Truth and Shelton were both tagged in. Truth did a split and kicked Shelton in the head. Shelton jumped off the top rope but Truth kicked him and hit the corkscrew elbow for the quick win.
Mind of Marv: Six man filler match which does nothing but make the heels look weak as hell. Ortiz looked like crap out there and should be pink slipped, immediately.
[Q7] Mysterio said that Jericho got jumped by Jericho wearing one of his mask. And he said that he got payback. Mysterio said he wants a title match against Jericho at the Bash. Jericho came out and said that Mysterio doesn’t get it. He said that he already got his rematch and he is not giving him anymore changes. Mysterio said if it wasn’t Jericho’s obsession with his mask, he would be IC champ. Jericho said that the people don’t know anything and the mask is Mysterio’s drug. Mysterio told Jericho to shut up and he will not insult the fans.
Mysterio says the mask is for his heritage and he wears it for himself. He said Jericho is a disgrace as a champion. Jericho said that Mysterio will take off the mask for good and if he wants a title match, he should put up his mask. Jericho said he will put the belt on the line and if he wins he will have Mysterio unmask and show everyone how much of a disgrace he is. Mysterio said that if it means putting his mask up for the IC title to expose Jericho as a hypocrite and a fraud he will accept the challenge. [C]
Mind of Marv: Here we go again with this mask bullshit. To be perfectly honest, the feud is excellent but this mask stipulation is the downfall. But I would love this feud to go on to Summerslam because it is in contention for feud of the year so far. But the IC title is looking more prominent every week with this program and I like it. After this feud, there should be some good contenders to look forward to.
[Q8] Jericho stayed outside for commentary and said that he will unmask Mysterio at the Bash.
6. World Heavyweight Champion C.M. Punk pinned Rey Mysterio in 11:39. Mysterio dropkicked and worked on Punk’s leg. Punk threw Mysterio into the top turnbuckle and Punk covered for the near fall. Mysterio kicked Punk into the ropes and attempted a 619 but Punk moved out of the ring. [C]
The show returned with Punk elbowing Mysterio in the middle of the ring and placed him a hold. Punk dropped Mysterio on his face for a near fall. Jericho continued to rip Mysterio on commentary. Both guys exchanged kicks and Mysterio hit a springboard cross body for a near fall.
Mysterio set up the 619 but Punk moved. Punk hit a dropkick for a near fall. Punk hit the knee and went for the bulldog but he missed. Punk went for the GTS but Mysterio countered with roll up for a near fall. Mysterio went for a springboard and Punk went for the GTS again but Mysterio countered. Mysterio got thrown outside of the ring and Jericho threw him into the ring post.
Jeff Hardy ran to the ring to tell the referee that Jericho was interfering but it was to no avail. Punk and Jeff stared each other down to end the show.
Mind of Marv: This should be one interesting feud if Punk becomes a top heel on this show. It is so many Hardy marks, why not turn Punk? But this match was good but not great. But it does make room for current and future storylines with these competitors. There were a lot of filler matches, but the main events made up for them. This show gets a C+ because it could have been better, if you ask me.
Rich Twilling will have the Hitlist by the A.M. and send some emails to HYPERLINK "mailto:mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com" mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I’ll catch ya later….
