6/16 Powell's WWE "ECW on Sci-Fi" Live Coverage: Tommy Dreamer vs. Jack Swagger in a non-title match, Christian vs. David Hart Smith, Evan Bourne vs. Mark Henry
Jun 16, 2009 - 09:00 PM

WWE "ECW on Sci-Fi"
Taped earlier tonight in Roanoke, Va.

[Q1] The opening video aired... Josh Matthews and Matt "Beer Can" Striker introduced the show...

1. David Hart Smith (w/Tyson Kidd, Natalya) defeated Christian in 15:00. Before the match, the announcers recapped Smith pinning Christian in a six-man tag last week. Christian received a solid reaction and spent a minute playing to the crowd before the bell rang to start the match. Smith backed Christian into a corner early on and slapped his chest. Christian fired right back with a slap to the face.

Smith and Christian fought their way onto the ring apron. Smith wrapped his arm around Christian's neck and then slammed him onto the ring apron and down to the floor. Very cool move that was replayed a few times. At 5:15, Smith held Christian in the air for several seconds before suplexing him.

Smith continued to dominate the match until he ran toward Christian, who pulled down the top rope and sent his opponent tumbling to ringside. Christian hit the spot where he leapt off the second rope and then onto Smith at ringside. [C] The quality action continued after the break as Christian hit a missile dropkick for a near fall.

[Q2] Christian followed up with the fulcrum kick in the corner. Later, Christian used the second rope as a springboard into a sunset flip. He went for the Killswitch, but couldn't hit it. Smith flipped him over only have Christian catch him in the sleeper. Smith turned it into a running powerslam for a good near fall.

A short time later, Kidd interfered by clotheslining Christian over the top rope. Smith hit a suplex and scored the pin. After the match, the Smith and Kidd were going to work over Christian, but Finlay came out in street clothes carrying his shillelagh and ran them off. Suddenly, Finlay turned and hit Christian with the shillelagh and left him lying...

Powell's POV: We were just talking in the Dot Net Members' forum earlier today about whether Smith would use the running powerslam as his finisher since his father used the move. I guessed no simply because Mark Henry uses the World's Strongest Slam. I like the move, though, and it was cool to see him use it. The match was a lot of fun. Smith's best outing in ECW and the usual excellent work from Christian. Finlay striking Christian was an unexpected twist.

The announcers recapped Mark Henry's attack on Evan Bourne from last week... A split-shot aired of Bourne and Henry walking backstage as the show cut to commercial... [C] After the break, the announcers recapped Finlay's knocking out Christian...

Backstage, Hurricane Helms interviewed Finlay, who pointed out that he was injured while trying to break up the Christian and Tommy Dreamer fight backstage. He said he believes in an eye for an eye...

Powell's POV: Basic and believable explanation that doesn't reveal anything about whether Finlay is a babyface, heel, or just pissed at Christian. I like it.

2. Mark Henry (w/Tony Atlas) pinned Evan Bourne in 3:40. Bourne came out with his ribs taped and winced in pain as he made his entrance. Henry went right after him to start the match and tossed him outside the ring where Bourne continued to sell the injury.

[Q3] Back inside the ring, Bourne caught Henry with few kicks. He backed into the corner and held his ribs in pain. Henry charged at him, but Bourne moved. Henry went for an ass splash off the second rope even though Bourne moved before he event left the ropes. Henry came right back with a clothesline. He tried to follow up with a splash and Bourne rolled out of the way.

Bourne struggled to get to his feet, but he beat Henry. Bourne caught him with a couple kicks and then followed up with a dropkick for a near fall. Bourne went for a crucifix, but Henry didn't budge. Henry turned it into the World's Strongest Slam and scored the clean pin.

After the match, Henry picked up Bourne, walked him around the ring, and hit the World's Strongest Slam again while Atlas laughed at ringside. The announcers said it was payback for Bourne winning two previous matches against Henry...

Powell's POV: A solid match. Bourne sold the ribs and the bulk of his offense came after dodging Henry. No complaints about Henry winning this match to keep the feud alive. Sure, I'd rather see Bourne vs. Tyson Kidd or another guy who can really go in the ring, but I'm still enjoying his program with Henry.

The Raw Rebound aired with a recap of last night's show that focussed heavily on Donald Trump... The announcers hyped Raw...

Backstage, Helms interviewed Jack Swagger, who said he hopes Dreamer and the "derelicts from the bingo hall" have enjoyed Tommy's moment because he's taking back the ECW Title... [C]

[Q4] 3. Jack Swagger defeated Tommy Dreamer in a non-title match in 12:00. Before the match, one of the announcers mentioned that Dreamer has been working on submission holds with Dean Malenko. Early in the match, Dreamer dumped Swagger to ringside and followed up with a slide kick that knocked Swagger into the guardrail.

Dreamer followed up by jumping at Swagger, who caught him and powerslammed him onto the floor. Swagger taunted Dreamer by yelling, "Come on, Tommy, get up," as the show cut to commercial less than three minutes into the match. [C]

After the break, Swagger was in control of the match and put Dreamer in an abdominal stretch until the referee caught him grabbing the ropes. Dreamer made a brief comeback, but Swagger aggressively slammed his head into the corner a few times and then clotheslined him. Dreamer came back and hit a clunky looking bulldog.

Dreamer played to the crowd and hit a neckbreaker on Swagger for a near fall. Dreamer went for a DDT, but Swagger avoided it and hit a Northern Lights suplex into a bridge for a good near fall. They fought onto the ropes and Dreamer pushed Swagger to the match. Dreamer jumped off the ropes, but Swagger kicked him in the gut.

[Overrun] Later, Dreamer went to the top rope for some odd reason. He went for a splash and missed by a mile. Swagger used an Oklahoma roll and scored the clean pin. The announcers said Swagger earned an ECW Title match, and pointed out that he managed to defeat Dreamer without using his gutwrench powerbomb finisher.

After the match, Finlay ran out and ran off Swagger. Finlay smacked Dreamer with the shillelagh. Christian ran out and attacked Finlay until Swagger peeled him off and threw him over the top rope. Finlay recovered and smacked Swagger with the shillelagh. Striker said no one is safe from the "army of one" known as Finlay....

Powell's POV: Dreamer got a better reaction than he did the night before on Raw, but it still wasn't pretty. Finlay going after everyone was cool. I've been bored by his character (and the way he uses the shillelagh in every match), but I liked what they did with him tonight. It feels like every man for himself right now, which is probably leading to a four-way at some point. Overall, a quality show. Rich Twilling will be by on Wednesday with the ECW Hitlist. Thanks for watching along with me tonight.
