Jun 12, 2009 - 09:27 PM |
WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Biloxi, Miss.
[Q1] The show began with highlights of the ladder match and Punk cashing in to become the new world heavyweight champion. Justin Roberts introduced Punk as the new world champ and Punk said he will cut to the chase and clear up some things. He mentioned that the crowd was grumbling and said that he stole the world title from Jeff Hardy. He said he can’t take back what he did and he is proud to be world champ.
The crowd booed him and he mentioned that that he capitalize on an opportunity to become world champ. He said it wasn’t the most popular decision but he did what is best for him. He said he worked so hard for the belt and it means the world to him. He mentioned that he would represent the Smackdown roster and he was interrupted by Jeff Hardy.
The crowd continued to give Punk heat and chanted Hardy. Jeff said he didn’t come out here to complain because it’s not his style. Jeff asked the crowd if Punk earned it and they disagreed. Jeff went on to say that he cashed in on the wrong guy.
Punk said that he knew that he will be angry and Jeff chose the ladder match. He said that Jeff happened to win the match and he cashed in. Jeff called Punk selfish and asked him if he cared about the fans and it was still a mixed reaction. Jeff said he wants his title back and he wants a rematch tonight. Edge’s music interrupts them.
Edge said he wants a rematch and Jeff says he won the match and he should get the rematch. Jeff asked why he was out here. Edge said that Jeff got lucky and they have not combined had the belt as much as him. Edge said that Jeff had the shortest world title reign in history and mentioned that Punk wants to be like him.
He mentioned that Punk cashed in the case twice like him and named his life “Straight Edge” after him. He said if Jeff wants another title shot, he needs to get behind him. Jeff then attacked both Edge and Punk. He hit a Twist of Fate and a Swanton on Punk. Teddy Long came out and said that he will sort things out. He said that Edge and Jeff will face each other in a number one contenders match and the winner will face Punk Monday night on Raw. [C]
Mind of Marv: Good opening segment which makes things predictable. The crowd (I don’t know why) is so over with Jeff Hardy, Punk will obviously turn heel turn. But this makes the show even more heel heavy if Punk becomes a heel with Jericho and Edge.
[Q2] Chris Jericho is in Teddy Long’s office and he mentioned how he is still disrespected and how he should be in the world title picture. He went on to say that he is five time world champion and how he defeated Rey Mysterio to take his mask off. Teddy Long mentioned that Jericho is going to face C.M. Punk in a champion vs. champion, non-title match.
Mind of Marv: Jericho took his mask off for the first time ever? Who fed him this shit? Look for some old WCW clips and get back to me.
1. Dolph Ziggler defeated The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) by countout in 3:00. Ziggler tried some punches, but Khali threw him out the ring. Khali clotheslined Ziggler twice and Ziggler gained the advantage by working on Khali’s leg. Khali slapped Ziggler and hit a big boot. Ziggler used Ranjin Singh as a shield and let Khali get counted out.
Mind of Marv: Please end this feud, already. Khali is a tool and Ziggler should be in a meaningful program…oh wait, everyone and their mama is a heel on Smackdown.
The number one contenders match was hyped for later tonight. [C]
[Q3] 2. Michelle McCool and Layla (w/Alicia Fox) defeated WWE Women’s Champion Melina and Eve in 3:00. Eve and Layla started the match. McCool got the tag and hit some hard knees to Eve’s back. Eve hit a chin breaker to McCool and she tagged Melina. Melina worked on McCool and covered for a near fall. Melina went for her finisher but Alicia Fox distracted Melina and McCool hit the Faith Breaker for the win.
Mind of Marv: Did the Smackdown creative team take the week off? This show has been lackluster so far. Beer is needed badly for two straight bad matches.
John Morrison and R-Truth vs. Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas is next…[C]
[Q4] Truth told a bad joke about Haas and Benjamin being Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. No one wants to see them are hear them. Because he said that is the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth.
Mind of Marv: I suspect the Raw team is writing this crap for Truth because it’s just plain stupefied me for a minute.
3. John Morrison and R-Truth defeated Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas in 9:55. Morrison got the advantage with a 720 spin into a Russian leg sweep. Then he did a break dance into a leg drop for a near fall. Truth got the tag and work on Shelton. Shelton showed his hops and bounced on the ropes and hit a super plex on Truth for a commercial break. [C]
The show returned with Shelton working on Truth’s neck. Shelton hit a Samoan drop for a near fall. Shelton threw Truth into Haas knee for a near fall. Haas applied a cobra clutch to Truth and Truth broke out. Haas hit a nice belly-to-belly suplex for a near fall. Truth got the hot tag to Morrison and he worked on the heels. Morrison hit the Chuck Kick to Haas. Morrison hit a Pele kick, the Moonlight Drive and the Starship Pain for the win.
Mind of Marv: Good but not a great match. It’s great that they are making Morrison a credible baby face, but Haas and Benjamin has been buried every week and it’s getting old. Either market them as a tag team or split them up and give those guys singles pushes.
The number one contender match was hyped again and the champion vs. champion match is next. [C]
Video of Jericho taking off Mysterio’s mask is shown. Jericho says that 99.9% of the crowd failed on what they accomplished and he called them liars. He mentioned that he exposed Mysterio and he has set him free. Instead of thanking him, he’s hiding and he said that he is Mysterio’s savior. He exposed him as a fraud and he is better than Punk because he the best in what he do. And he guaranteed that he will defeat Punk tonight.
[Q5] 4. World Heavyweight Champion C.M. Punk defeated Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho in a champion vs. champion match in 13:57. Jericho applied an overhead wrist lock and Punk reversed in a headlock for a near fall. Punk kicked and clotheslined Jericho. Jericho tried for the Walls early but Punk countered. Punk attempted the GTS but Jericho crawled out of the ring. [C]
The show returned with Punk taking the advantage with a flying cross body for a near fall. Jericho hit a springboard dropkick off the ropes to Punk. Jericho took the advantage by hitting a drop toe hold to Punk. Punk hit the kicks and bulldog for the near fall. Punk tried to hit a springboard clothesline but Jericho countered with a Lionsault for a near fall. Jericho blocked some kicks and hit an insurghi kick for a near fall.
[Q6] Punk went for the GTS but Jericho countered with the Walls of Jericho. Punk crawled to the ropes to break the submission. Jericho tried to go to the ropes but Punk countered with a kick of his own. Punk hit a superplex for a near fall. Jericho hit the Codebreaker for a near fall because Punk put his leg on the rope. Punk kicked the Jericho and hit the GTS for the win.
Mind of Marv: Great way to kick off the second hour because the first hour (besides the opening segment) was suspect. These guys work well together and this should be an interesting feud to revive in the future. Smackdown is the shit right now and Raw should take notes. RAW is gonna be destroyed
The Raw rebound was shown and Jeff Hardy made his ring entrance. [C]
The Smack of the Night was shown (with still pictures) with Jeff winning the world title and Punk cashing in. Punk came out for commentary for the main event.
[Q7] 5. Edge and Jeff Hardy fought to a no-contest in a number one contenders match for the World Heavyweight Championship in 22:05. Jeff took the early advantage of the match. Edge worked on Jeff but Jeff countered by throwing him in the ring post for the first commercial break of the match. [C]
[Q8] Jeff hit a cross arm breaker on Edge for a near fall. Jeff continued to work on Edge’s arm. Edge got back on the advantage while limping by attacking Jeff in the corner. Edge hit a chop block on Jeff and worked on Jeff’s left leg. Jeff countered with blows to Edge’s head and clotheslined him. Jeff tried a Whisper in The Wind but Edge pushed him into another commercial break. [C]
The show returned with Edge stomping on Jeff’s leg. Edge attacked Jeff outside of the ring and threw him back in for a near fall. Jeff applied a chin lock and Edge had an inverted body scissors on Jeff. Edge went to the top rope but Jeff countered with a DDT. Both guys run into each other and the referee started the ten count.
Jeff hit a side Russian leg sweep for a near fall. Jeff hit a slam on Edge and went to the top rope for a double leg drop for a near fall. Edge applied the sharpshooter to Jeff and Jeff broke the submission move. Jeff rolled Edge up for a near fall. Jeff attempted a Twist of Fate but Edge blocked it. Edge went for a spear but he missed. Jeff tried to roll Edge up but it was for a near fall. Jeff finally hit a Twist of Fate but Edge moved when Jeff attempted a Swanton.
Edge threw Jeff into Punk and Punk ran into the ring and attacked Edge for the disqualification. Jeff realized that he was disqualified and he attacked Punk. Edge tried to capitalize but Jeff hit him with the Twist of Fate. Then Punk hit Jeff with the GTS and Punk stood tall alone in the ring. Backstage, Teddy Long and Tiffany was backstage and Long made the announcement that it would be a triple threat match between CM Punk vs. Edge vs. Jeff Hardy was announced for Raw for the world title for Raw’s three for all.
Mind of Marv: WWE continues to give away matches like these and I have ZERO problems with them doing so. This makes the world title more valuable because you have Edge, Punk, Jeff Hardy and Jericho and legit contenders that people actually want to watch.
Not the rubbish that is presented on Raw with Big Show (snore), Randy Orton, Triple H (going for a 14th time reign) and John Cena (who bores the unholy hell out of the main demographic, males 18-34). I’m not being a hater, but watching Raw is like drinking Everclear on an empty stomach. But, the second half saved the show and Smackdown gets a “B” but barely because the first hour was like TNA Impact when it was bad like six months ago.
Shore and Powell has to be tortured with Raw for three hours on Monday and Rich Twilling provides the Smackdown Hitlist tomorrow. Send questions, comments and feedback to mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I’ll check back next week.
