6/9 Powell's WWE "ECW on Sci-Fi" Live Coverage: New ECW Champion Tommy Dreamer opens the show, WWE Hall of Famer wrestles Evan Bourne
Jun 9, 2009 - 09:00 PM

WWE "ECW on Sci-Fi"
Taped earlier tonight in Biloxi, Miss.

[Q1] The show opened with a video that recapped Tommy Dreamer capturing the ECW Title at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view... Tiffany stood in the ring with a table behind her and introduced Dreamer, who came out wearing a suit jacket and jeans with the ECW Title draped over his shoulder. Meanwhile, Josh Matthews and Matt "Beer Can" Striker chimed in on commentary.

Once Dreamer arrived in the ring, Tiffany congratulated him for becoming the new ECW Champion. Dreamer thanked her and said he didn't believe he'd win the belt. He smiled and then got emotional. He said it was the fans who made it happen. He thanked them and said it was the greatest highlight of his career.

Dreamer turned his attention to his new ECW contract as the fans chanted "Tommy." Before he signed, Christian's music played and he walked to the ring with a box of tissues. Nice! Christian congratulated Dreamer and then noted that he lost the belt despite not being pinned. "Thank you, Swagger, you dork," Christian said.

Christian said he has a rematch clause and he will use it. However, he said that from one friend to another, he's happy Dreamer is still in the company. Christian and Dreamer shook hands. Dreamer turned his attention back to the contract. He was about to sign it, but...

Jack Swagger's entrance music interrupted Dreamer. Swagger walked out wearing a suit and carrying a mic. He said the people came to see him, not Dreamer's flabby rear end. Swagger entered the ring and complained that Dreamer shouldn't have even been in the match because his contract expired the day before. Tiffany started to explain, but Swagger cut her off.

Swagger said he's talked to his lawyer and agent. He said he and Christian could take it to court and have Dreamer stripped of the belt. Swagger said Dreamer should do the right thing and forfeit the title. Dreamer got upset, but Christian cut him off and said Dreamer should do the right thing, just as he was going to. Christian punched Swagger.

Dreamer and Christian cleared Swagger from the ring. Dreamer rushed over and signed his new ECW contract. He went to the ropes and celebrated with the title. As Dreamer's music played, Christian snuck up behind Dreamer and powerbombed him through the table. Christian smiled while Dreamer sold the move in the ring...

The announcers hyped that Dreamer and Christian would face Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith in the main event... [C]

Powell's POV: Good segment. I like the tension between the three and the powerbomb by Christian at the end. Two complaints. Tiffany isn't very good in her role, and I don't like the way Christian makes Swagger out to be a dork. Sure, it's funny, but I don't think the fans will take him as seriously if he's portrayed as a dorky heel.

[Q2] Backstage, Tiffany was talking to a production crew member about an accident that happened backstage with some equipment. He said "a guy in green" was responsible. Tiffany was sidetracked by Christian. She asked him why he powerbomed Dreamer. He said he got caught up in the moment. She said Dreamer couldn't compete, so Christian would have to team with Swagger...

Powell's POV: Wow, that was a quick determination on Dreamer's status. The guy's gone through a million tables over the years and continued to fight, but this one put him out of his match. Sure, it's possible and I could buy into it if they hadn't made the announcement so quickly. That said, I like the idea of Christian and Swagger being forced to team together.

1. Evan Bourne beat Tony Atlas (w/Mark Henry) in 3:15. The announcers recapped the Atlas and Henry squabble from last week. Striker recalled watching Atlas press Hulk Hogan over his head at MSG. He said he watched the match with his father. Atlas got some offense in, but Bourne hit the Shooting Star Press for the 1-2-3.

After the match, Henry entered the ring and attacked Bourne from behind. He picked him up and hit the World's Strongest Slam. Henry smiled as he stood over Bourne and then left the ring. No additional signs of tension between Henry and Atlas after the match...

Powell's POV: Atlas was fine. Bourne ran around and kept things interesting and Atlas wasn't asked to do much. I didn't like the way he squabbled with Henry last week and then rushed into the ring this week. The buildup for Atlas getting in the ring could have been better.

The announcers hyped the tag team main event... [C] Did You Know more men watched ECW last week than any program on ESPN?...

Powell's POV: You just know they're paying someone good money to come up with this shit.

[Q3] 2. Vladimir Kozlov squashed Luke Hawx and Chris Lewie in a handicap match in 1:30. At ringside, he picked up one of his opponents by the throat and threw him into the ring post. Back in the ring, he threw the same opponent with a great suplex. Kozlov finished off the other opponent with his finisher. Vladimir smiled awkwardly after the match.

Powell's POV: Impressive squash with good intensity from Kozlov. I'm not sure what was up Kozlov's odd smiling afterward.

Backstage, Swagger told Christian he didn't have to worry about him holding up his end of the bargain. He said Christian should worry about holding up his end... [C]

Highlights aired from Monday's Raw of Legacy taking out Batista, and Triple H returning to destroy Randy Orton...

Powell's POV: Nice video footage and cool music once Hunter's return kicked in.

At ringside, the announcers hyped John Cena vs. Big Show vs. Triple H vs. Big Show in a Fatal Four Way for the WWE Championship... The announcers also hyped Tommy Dreamer vs. Christian for the ECW Title for Monday's Raw...

Powell's POV: Well, at least we assume it's for the WWE Championship. They showed the belt in the background, but never officially stated that Batista was stripped of the WWE Title.

The Hart Dynasty made their entrance. Natalya said the match would be fought between two former champions and two future champions...

[Q4] [C] 3. Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith (w/Natalya) beat Jack Swagger and Christian at 11:25. Swagger got frustrated and tagged Christian by shoving him off the ring apron. Christian rebounded nicely by hitting Kidd with a missile dropkick. Swagger mockingly encouraged Christian and then shoved him toward Kidd, who caught him with a kick. [C]

After the break, they lightened up on the reluctant partners saga and wrestled. Well, at least until the end. Christian had Kidd set up for the Killswitch when Swagger reached in, grabbed Christian, and pulled him throat first onto the top rope. The Hart Dynasty hit their finisher and scored the clean pin.

After the match, the heels ganged up on Christian. Dreamer ran out with a kendo stick and attacked Swagger and ran them all off. Swagger slowly backed up the ramp and watched Dreamer, as the announcers questioned why Dreamer would help Christian. Dreamer pointed at Christian, who was sitting in the corner, with the stick and then played to the crowd to close the show...

Powell's POV: The question should have been if Dreamer could run out to save Christian, why couldn't he just wrestle in the match? Anyway, I still enjoyed the show. The Hart Dynasty won the match, but they didn't get much out of it. The real focus of the show was Dreamer, Christian, and Swagger. Again, I just hope they have something better in mind than a cheap Swagger interference finish for Monday. Thanks for watching along with me tonight.
