5/28 Shore's WWE Superstars Live Coverage: Primo and Carlito vs. Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas, Finlay vs. Jack Swagger, John Cena vs. Ted DiBiase.
May 28, 2009 - 07:00 PM

WWE Superstars on WGN America
Taped in Las Angeles, Calif.

[Q1]The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Todd Grisham welcomed us to Superstars. He hyped the Cena/DiBiase main event…Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas made their entrance. Grisham and Jim Ross were on commentary. The Colons were out next to a big pop. Which is better than a big polyp in your colon…

1. Carlito and Primo Colon defeated Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas at 13:31. Primo and Benjamin started. After some early, and quick, back and forth, Primo hit a springboard cross body for two. Benjamin tagged in Haas and he lost immediate control to Primo. Primo tagged in Carlito and they hit a double dropkick on each side of Haas’s head. Cool spot. Carlito immediately lost control and Benjamin tagged back in and worked a rest hold on Carlito. Carlito managed to reverse a whip and hit a back body drop.

Primo tagged in and went crazy on Benjamin. He did a break-dance type kip up and then a low dropkick on Benjamin. Benjamin ducked a clothesline and charged at Primo who was near Haas. Primo tossed Benjamin over the top and started to hit Haas. But Benjamin jumped up and grabbed Primo’s arm, racking it on the top rope. He climbed back in the ring and tagged Haas as the show went to commercial…[C]

Back at 8:44, Haas had an arm bar locked in on Primo. He tagged in Benjamin who hit a flying knee drop on the arm for a two count. Benjamin tossed Primo into the corner, sending his shoulder to the pole. Hass tagged back in and locked in another arm bar. Hass cover and Carlito broke it up. Benjamin tagged back in. He worked strikes and hell moves before locking in yet another arm bar.

[Q2]Primo fought out, Benjamin whipped him into the ropes and pushed him straight in the air. Primo landed on his face. Cryme Tyme’s music hit and they came out and did their shtick on the mic. They distracted Benjamin with their antics and Primo rolled up Benjamin who kicked out at two. Primo hit a belly to back on Benjamin and both men tagged out. Carlito worked fast on Haas. He ducked a Haas clothesline and clubbed Benjamin from behind, who was arguing with Cryme Tyme. He did a springboard flip over Haas and then the Backstabber for the win. Post match, The Colons partied with Cryme Tyme while Haas and Benjamin looked pissed…The announce team hyped Swagger vs. Finlay for next…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Other than the 128475 arm bars, this was a really good match. It’s matches like this that make covering Superstars fun. It looks like WWE is trying to revive the tag team division. I’m not holding my breath, but I love tag matches and if they are, I’m excited. WGN is giving away a free copy of 12 Rounds. The announcer says Cena like SAY-na. Funny to me.

Back from commercial, Finlay made his entrance. Josh Matthews and Matt Stryker were on commentary. Swagger was out next…

2. Jack Swagger defeated Fit Finlay at 4:15. Swagger ran in at the bell and worked strikes on Finlay. Swagger whipped Finlay to the ropes and ran in. Finlay kicked him and hopped to the second rope. Swagger pushed him off to the floor. Swagger did push ups in the ring while Finlay recovered. Finlay got back in the ring and Swagger hit a splash for two. He locked in a waist lock. Finlay made it to his feet and Swagger whipped him to the ropes. He tried to lock in an abdominal stretch, but Finlay escaped only to be clubbed from behind.

Swagger charged in and Finlay tossed him over the top. Finlay followed, but Swagger rammed his back into the post. Back in the ring, Swagger hit a slam for two. He tried for a splash, but Finlay brought his legs up. Swagger went for the shillelagh, but the ref stopped him. With the ref’s back turned, Finlay rolled in a small package, but by the time the ref made it, Swagger kicked out at two. Finlay went for the Celtic Cross, but his back quit and Swagger slipped around to hit the gut wrench powerbomb for the win…

[Q3]The Denver Debacle video, with clips from Monday’s Raw, aired…The announce team hyped Cena vs. DiBiase for next…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Holy crap. Has anyone ever seen Finlay squashed? Because that’s what we just saw. Swagger looked real impressive and officially sold me. Another year in the minors and he should be fantastic.

Back from commercial, Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler were on commentary. They put over the cage match at Extreme Rules between Orton and Batista. They introduced an “Orton is God” type video. The announce team ran down the Extreme Rules card…John Cena made his entrance. Cole went on and on about how it was Cena’s debut on Superstars as the show went to commercial…[C]

[Q4]3. John Cena defeated Ted DiBiase at 11:35. DiBiase took control early and worked heel moves. Cena tried a couple of come backs, only to be beat back down. Vintage Cena. DiBiase hit a cross body. Cena rolled through and picked up DiBiase in an Attitude Adjustment setup. DiBiase escaped and slid to ringside. Cena chased him and DiBiase slid back in the ring. When Cena climbed up, DiBiase hit a hot shot on him. Cena went to the floor and DiBiase followed. He whipped Cena into the stairs. Cena recovered into the break…[C]

Back from commercial, DiBiase was still in control. He hit a standing drop kick for two. Out of nowhere, Cena hit two shoulder tackles and a slam. He hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle and picked up DiBiase for the Attitude Adjustment. DiBiase slid out and rolled up for two. Cena tried again and DiBiase held the ropes. Cena kicked him and dropped him. DiBiase hit a flying clothesline from the corner followed by a stomach buster. He put Cena in the corner and attempted a superplex. Cena fought out and hit the Fameasser followed by the STF. DiBiase tapped immediately. The announce team quickly sent it home…

Shore’s Slant: It was nice to see DiBiase in a main event again, but Cena bores me to tears. His matches are all the same. He takes the beat down and wins in the ends. I realize time was short, but DiBiase tapped in 0.00000004 seconds. Overall though, another good showing from the Thursday show. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you tomorrow for Smackdown!
