Feb 20, 2009 - 07:00 PM

Smackdown on MyNetwork TV
Taped on 2/17/09 in Portland, Ore.

[Q1] A video package recapped No Way out with Edge’s title loss and win. In the ring, Justin Roberts introduced the new World Heavyweight Champion, Edge. Edge came to the ring and posed for the booing fans. He cut a promo on the fans. He said he knows each of them wanted him to come out without the WWE Championship so they could rub it in. Edge said he was different from the fans, he is a winner, not a loser.

He said when he saw Kofi Kingston was unable to compete in the EC, he offered his services. He pointed out he was the first superstar to compete in two ECs in one night. He said that he stands before them an unprecedented eight time World Heavyweight Champion. His music hit and he started to leave the ring, but Jeff Hardy’s music hit.

Sting…uhh…Jeff Hardy came to the ring. Jeff congratulated Edge on leaving NOW as a champion. He said maybe it was luck, maybe it was skill, or maybe it was because he gets special treatment because he’s married to a pitiful excuse of a GM. Edge asked him if he was out to whine like Cena did Monday. Jeff said no, he was just here to challenge Edge for the title tonight.

Edge asked Jeff if he was on “illegal substances” again. He said, “Let me remind you, you lost at No Way Out.” Jeff said, “Let me remind you, the only reason you’re not WWE Champion is because I pinned you in like three minutes.” Edge said there was no way he was facing Hardy tonight. Jeff said he would try to convince Vickie since she wears the pants in the family. He said she pulls the strings and Edge dances. He said when Edge has to go to the bathroom; he has to raise his hand. Edge took a shot at Jeff but he ducked and hit a Twist of Fate on Edge. Jeff left the ring and celebrated…

Jim Ross and Tazz hyped the sitdown interview with Triple H tonight. A video recapped the events of Monday night…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Solid opening segment. I’m glad we are starting to see the end of Edge/Vickie angle. It has been fun, but I’m tired of it. I like the “new” Jeff Hardy, but I hate the make up. It’s not a big deal, but it just annoys me. Stephanie wins “Bump of the Year” right now. Everyone else is playing for second.

[Q2]Backstage, Vickie was texting someone. There was a knock and she said come in. Kizarny came in and said something. He knocked on his head and said it again. Vickie said, “Who’s there?” Kizarny nodded, but Edge barged in and kicked him out. He raged at Vickie and she made a non-title match for him and Jeff Hardy for later…

1. Michelle McCool and Maryse defeated Eve Torres and Maria at 4:11. Maria and McCool started out. Maria took control and started to drag McCool to the ring, but Maryse came in and knocked Maria down. McCool tossed Maria ringside and Maryse beat on her some more. Back in the ring, McCool laid Maria on the top rope and then hit a drop kick on her. Cool move. Maryse tagged in and locked in the dreaded chin lock.

Maria got the quick hot tag. Eve came in and hit two dropkicks and a suplex on Maryse. She tossed Maryse in the corner and climbed up for the 10 punches. Maria distracted the ref and McCool kicked Eve in the face, dropping her to the match. Maryse gloated for a second and then punched Maria, knocking her to the floor. She then covered Eve for the win…

A short video showed The Miz and John Morrison on their date with the Bellas as the announce team hyped more of the video for later…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Wow, Eve looked really good for the minute she was in the ring. I was real impressed. This match was kind of entertaining. I’m still in a little bit of shock as the Divas division has been…what’s the word…shitty since McCool won the belt. It was nice to see a solid match from the group.

[Q3]A video recapped The Miz and Morrison “winning” the Bellas last week. A video showed the date with the Bellas and Miz and Morrison. Miz popped a champaign cork and went to pour. Morrison reached across the table with his glass and said, “Me first.” Morrison also opened his coat, showing off his bare chest and abs. His Bella asked what he was doing and he said he was hot. Miz and Morrison continued to act like assholes and even verbally attacked the waiter.

The waiter was shown in the kitchen, and it was obvious it was Primo in disguise. He tapped a guy with long blond hair on the shoulder and said he spit in the food and burnt the chicken and Miz and Morrison still wouldn’t leave. He asked the blond guy what they were going to do. The blond turned out to be Carlito and he said he had a plan. They went to the table with a pie each and apologized for the bad service and food and said they were giving Miz and Morrison free desserts for their troubles. Morrison suspected something and pulled Primo’s wig off. The Colons went to hit them with the pies, but they ducked and the Bellas got pied instead. They screamed at the Colons and stormed off. The Colons dropped into chairs and looked dejected. The announce team hyped the Colons defending their tag titles against Miz and Morrison next week…

Shelton Benjamin made his way to the ring…[C]

Shore’s Slant: That video was funny as hell. Morrison and Miz are the best at the cocky heel. The Colons were hysterical in their costumes. Carlito said he looked like a young Brad Pitt. He looked more like an old Hannah Montana.

Back from commercial, Chavo Guerrero had made his entrance. R-Truth made his entrance through the crowd. He climbed over the rail and was attacked by the heels. MVP ran in and made the save. JR said the damage to Truth’s leg may already be done…[C]

[Q4]2. R-Truth (originally) and MVP defeated Shelton Benjamin and Chavo Guerrero at 4:43. Back from commercial and this match had started so I have no idea how much was missed. Benjamin was working on MVP and Truth was nowhere to be seen. The announce team said this was now a handicap match. Chavo tagged in and immediately lost control to MVP. MVP hit his “Ballin” punch and covered. Benjamin made the save and MVP punched him to the floor. MVP tossed Chavo in the corner and went for the kick but Chavo moved.

Benjamin tagged back in and locked in a rest hold. He hit the T-Bone suplex and stalked for Paydirt, but Chavo tagged himself in. Chavo hit Tres Amigos and teased the Frogsplash, but Benjamin tagged himself in. They argued and when Benjamin turned his back, Chavo clubbed him and hit the Frogsplash on Benjamin. MVP hit the drive by for the win. Post match, Chavo took credit for the win and taunted MVP from the ramp…JR hyped his interview with Triple H for next…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Good match, not sure why Truth had to get put out, but whatever. Benjamin is the one who walks away looking weak, which is bad in a title hunt situation. We’ll see. My wife is going to die during this interview. She marked out so bad Monday night when Hunter came out I nearly shit myself.

Back from commercial, a video showed JR in a chair with an empty one beside him. He said he was going to interview Triple H. He said for those who didn’t know the history, here was a video. A video package recapped everything from the Vince punt to this Monday and Stephanie’s lesson in how to take a bump…

[Q5]Back to the interview, Triple H was in the previously empty chair. JR asked Hunter for his thoughts. Hunter said Orton had been walking a fine line for sometime. He said, Monday, he put his hands…” He trailed off and fought to regain composure. He said some people may not like his father in law Vince McMahon, but he is a 63 year old man. He said Orton kicked him in the head and did the same to his son. He said, “And this Monday, he put his hands on my wife.” Hunter looked straight at the camera and said, “You’ve crossed a line Orton. One can’t come back from.” He looked away and then sat up closer to the camera and said, “Stephanie is the mother of my children.” He snatched his mic off and walked out…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Holy crap was that intense. Hunter played it great. He looked like he hadn’t slept, his eyes were blood shot and he looked like he might have been crying just prior. I now agree that this might have been a bad idea for a “PG” show.

3. Umaga squashed Scotty Goldman at 1:21. Goldman tried a double axe handle off the second rope and Umaga super kicked him out of the air. Samoan spike for the win…A Wrestlemania 14 video aired…Vickie was shown backstage heading towards the ring…[C]

[Q6]A video recapped the JBL/HBK promo on Raw. Vickie Guerrero was in the ring. She said excuse me and the crowd cave her so much heat she was hard to hear. She said she didn’t know who Shawn Michaels and JBL think they are. She said that neither of them deserved to challenge Undertaker at Wrestlemania. She said the only person who should is the only person still undefeated in singles competition, Vladimir Kozlov. Kozlov came to the ring. Vickie said to prove he could beat Taker, he would face him next week.

She handed the mic to Kozlov who said something. I heard, and Tazz translated later, that he would destroy one of them first and then Taker himself on Friday. Them of course being Michaels and JBL. When he was finished, Vickie held his hand up and they celebrated to his music…A training video was shown for Gail Kim…[C]

Shore’s Slant: I swear to God, if Kozlov ends Undertaker’s streak, I’ll quit wrestling forever. I guess Kozlov’s going to run in on the match Monday. Thanks for that spoiler WWE. WTF? Kim is coming to Smackdown? Oh it just became a good day.

Back from commercial, the announce team said that sources tell them that Triple H will confront Randy Orton this Monday on Raw. JR sold how intense it was to just sit next to Hunter in the interview. Tazz said Orton would pay heavy for this mistake. They hyped Stone Cold going into the HOF and then showed the Funk video for their entry…

[Q7]Edge made his entrance…[C]

4. Jeff Hardy defeated Edge by Disqualification at 18:57. Edge charged Hardy and got drop toe holed. He charged back in and got hip tossed. So he walked in and straight punched Hardy. Hardy hip tossed him again and locked in an arm bar. Edge got up and walked Hardy into the corner. The ref stepped between them for the break and Edge got a cheap shot in. Edge tossed Hardy to the opposite corner, ran in, hooked his feet on Hardy, and got dropped on his face.

Hardy locked in another arm bar and Edge powered out. He whipped Hardy who stopped on the ropes. Edge charged in and Hardy tossed him over the top. Edge landed on the apron and Hardy kicked his feet out. He then hit a baseball slid, driving Edge to the floor. Hardy followed and tossed Edge back in the ring. As he climbed in, Edge kicked him and hit a neckbreaker. Both men were on their backs…[C]

[Q8]Back from commercial and Edge was in control at the 8:09 mark. Hardy was pulling himself up by the ropes and Edge splashed him when his throat was across the middle rope. He got a two count and locked in a rest hold on the neck. Hardy fought out and ran towards the corner, but Edge grabbed his hair and drug him to the ground. The ref crawled all over Edge. Edge hit a neckbreaker for a near fall. Edge took aim and dropped a knee in Jeff’s back and locked in another rest hold.

Hardy fought out and came off the ropes and dove at Edge. Edge ducked and Hardy bounced of the ring, through the ropes, and onto the floor. Hardy dove back in at nine, and Edge met him with several stomps. He hit a standing elbow drop for a two count. Edge went to climb the turnbuckle, but Hardy knocked him off to the floor, and then hit a dive over the top rope. He tossed Edge back in and hit a sunset flip over the ropes for a near fall. They double clotheslined each other. Edge managed to cover for two. He tossed Hardy into the corner, but Hardy ran up and hit Whisper in the Wind for two. He teased the Twist of Fate, but Edge reversed into a whip and a big boot.

Hardy rolled to the apron. Edge went to get him and Hardy dropped his face on the top rope. Hardy hit a leg drop for two. Hardy teased Twist of Fate again, but Edge reversed into his two handed reverse DDT. Edge set up for the spear. Hardy stood and caught Edge for a small package for two. Edge popped up and Hardy hit Twist of Fate. He hit the swanton, stood, and turned around to get a Twist of Fate from Matt Hardy. Hardy snatched the mic out of Justin Roberts’ hands as he was trying to announce Jeff as the winner by DQ. Matt stood over him and said next week, they were going to fight. Matt left the ring. Jeff stood up and got speared by Edge. Edge took the title belt and celebrated…

Shore’s Slant: Really, really good match from Edge and Jeff Hardy. The ending was predictable, but that’s OK too. I wish this would be the Wrestlemania match, but I know it won’t. I have been very critical of WWE for how bad the shows have been on double taping nights. And I am used to Smackdown being the wrestling heavy show, which tonight had a grand total of 29 minutes. That being said, I really enjoyed this show. All the matches were good. OK Umaga was a squash, but eh. If they pull off another good show next week, I will be impressed. As always, thanks for reading and I’ll see you next week.

And Happy Birthday Alex!
