3/25 Kester's WWE Main Event Live Coverage Review: Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Dolph Ziggler to determine the number one-contender for the Intercontinental Championship
Mar 25, 2014 - 07:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

Main Event on WWE Network
Taped earlier from Boston, Massachusetts.

The announcers informed viewers that Christian suffered a "slight" concussion on Monday, so he was out of the match. Big E made his entrance and sat at ringside.

1. Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Dolph Ziggler to determine the number one-contender for the Intercontinental Championship. Ziggler got dumped to the floor early and Sheamus and Del Rio locked up. Sheamus got a power move off on Del Rio and Ziggler slipped back into the ring. Each man took turns selling on the outside as the other two wrestled in the ring.

Del Rio caught Sheamus with an enziguri and threw Ziggler into the barricade… [C]

Back from the break, Del Rio continued to control the action and kept both of his opponents off their feet. Ziggler caught Del Rio with a dropkick as he attempted an attack from the top rope.

Ziggler began working through his move set on Del Rio. Sheamus dragged Ziggler form the ring and took his turn on offense. All three men battled in the ring for the first time since the opening bell.

Del Rio cleared Ziggler but ate a battering ram shoulder block from Sheamus for a near fall. Sheamus clotheslined Del Rio to the floor and turned around into a massive jumping DDT from Ziggler for a great near fall.

Sheamus reversed a rollup attempt from Ziggler to lock in the Celtic Cloverleaf. Before Ziggler could tap, Del Rio connected with a side thrust kick on Sheamus for another near fall.

Del Rio locked Sheamus in the Cross-Armbreaker, but Sheamus got out of the hold. Del Rio set up for a backstabber, but Ziggler caught Del Rio with a Zig Zag as he was performing the move. With Sheamus selling the backstabber, Ziggler was clear to cover Del Rio for the win...

Dolph Ziggler defeated Alberto Del Rio and Sheamus in 14:30 to earn a shot at the Intercontinental Championship.

Renee Young interviewed Dolph Ziggler and Big E after the match. Ziggler yelled that he was going to WrestleMania to win the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royale and he would do it as the Intercontinental Champion.

Big E spoke briefly about his and Ziggler's history and he promised to walk out of their match with his championship on his shoulder…

A recap of Batista and Randy Orton's promo exchange on Raw aired…

Ryan's Reaction: Great match. It started fairly slow and formulaic, but they amped up the action down the stretch and made for a very entertaining match.

AJ Lee joined the announcers at ringside.

1. Natalya, The Funkadactyls, Eva Marie, and Emma vs. Alicia Fox, Summer Rae, Layla, Aksana, and Tamina Snuka. Natalya and Layla took turns slapping each other's backsides.

About two minutes in, the match completely broke down and the women swarmed the ring. When order was restored, the heels had control of the action and began working over Eva Marie.

The match broke down a second time and Tamina and Naomi were left in the ring. Tamina superkicked Naomi and covered her for the pinfall victory…

Tamina, Alicia Fox, Summer Rae, Layla, and Aksana defeated The Funkadactyls, Eva Marie, Natalya, and Emma in 5:21.

AJ jumped in the ring and raised Tamina's hand. Tamina looked startled and confused, so AJ hugged her. AJ skipped up the amp… [C]

Ryan's Reaction: The match was a complete mess, but any match with that many people that has to end that quickly will be a mess. This one simply wasn't helped by the number of green wrestlers involved.

The Raw Rebound focused on the Bray Wyatt and John Cena feud…

Wade Barrett ascended on his podium to inform the audience that they were all hideous… [C]

Big E vs. Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship. The two men jockeyed for control, but Big E was able to gain the upper hand and overpower Ziggler... [C]

Ziggler began to rally back after the break, but Big E caught him with a belly-to-belly suplex. Ziggler hit a dropkick, but Big E battled back with an urinagi.

Ziggler hit his jumping DDT for a two count. Big E fought back and attempted to go for the Big Ending, but Ziggler slipped out and hit the Fameasser for another near fall. Moments later, Big E hit the Big Ending and picked up the 1-2-3…

Big E defeated Dolph Ziggler in 7:02 to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

Big E and Ziggler hugged after their match.

Ryan's Reaction: Decent match, but we've seen a lot more form this pairing in the past. Overall, a solid edition of Main Event that wasn't extraordinary but wasn't a complete waste of time either. Thanks for following along with me this evening.
