10/16 Kester's WWE Main Event Live Coverage Review: Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler, Santino Marella and Tons of Funk vs. 3MB, R-Truth vs. Damien Sandow, and Fandango vs. The Great Khali
Oct 16, 2013 - 07:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

Main Event on Ion Television
Taped earlier in Kansas City, Missouri.

[Q1] 1. Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler for the United States Championship. Ziggler got a quick dropkick and cover in to wake the crowd out. Ambrose fled to the outside to regroup, and he managed to catch Ziggler with a series of kicks before locking in a rest hold.

Ziggler fought out and hit a neckbreaker, Ziggler settled into control and began to work his moveset on the champion. Ziggler clotheslined Ambrose over the top rope and the two men tumbled to the floor… [C]

Back from the break, Ambrose was firmly in control. Ambrose wore Ziggler down for a bit, but Ziggler scored with a hotshot and a missile dropkick for a two count. The two men chained rollup attempts and Ziggler hit the Fameasser for a near fall.

[Q2] Ambrose rolled back to the floor and when Ziggler followed, Ambrose was ready with a suplex to put a stop to Ziggler's momentum. Ambrose went to the top rope and Ziggler cut him off with a facebuster from the top rope for a great near fall.

Ziggler locked in his sleeper hold, but Ambrose managed to slip out. Moments later, Ambrose dodged a charge from Ziggler and pulled him off of the second rope to land on his head. With Ziggler groggy, Ambrose hit his finisher and covered Ziggler for the 1-2-3…

Dean Ambrose defeated Dolph Ziggler to retain the United States Champion in 12:53.

A video package chronicling John Cena's rapid recovery from surgery aired… [C]

Ryan's Reaction: Good match. They set a great pace early and never really slowed down throughout; made for a fun and energetic start to the show.

2. Santino Marella and Tons of Funk (w/The Funkadactyls) vs. 3MB. Brodus Clay and Heath Slater started off opposite each other. Clay manhandled Slater and slammed him into the corner. The babyfaces worked a few quick tags before Slater managed to escape to his corner.

Jinder Mahal tagged in and Sweet T threw him around the ring. McIntyre tagged into the match and managed to finally gain the upper hand for his team. 3MB took their turn with the quick tags as they wore down Clay.

[Q3] Clay got a hot tag off to Marella, and Santino wasted no time in producing the Cobra sleeve. Santino connected with The Cobra on Mahal for the pinfall victory…

Santino Marella and Tons of Funk defeated 3MB in 5:12.

Ryan's Reaction: None of the match's participants mean anything for the average internet fan, but they managed to put on a fun show for the young audience members in attendance. The match did nothing for me, but it came and went without overstaying its welcome.

This week's Raw Rebound covered Raw's main event tag team championship match… [C]

3. Damien Sandow vs. R-Truth. Sandow took the fight right to R-Truth and overwhelmed him with a series of vicious strikes. Truth tried to fight back and set up and early scissor kick, but Sandow saw it coming and rebuffed Truth with more strikes. Sandow threw Truth to the floor.

[Q4] Sandow slowed down the pace and hit a side-Russian legsweep into the Elbow of Disdain for a near fall. Truth scored with a heel kick out of nowhere and made his comeback with a sitout front release suplex for a two count. Truth followed with a scissor kick for another near fall.

Sandow hit The Silencer and covered Truth for the pinfall victory…

Damien Sandow defeated R-Truth in 4:37.

A recap of CM Punk "beating the clock" and setting the stipulations for his Hell in a Cell match aired… [C]

Ryan's Reaction: Quick enhancement match for Sandow. I'd argue that he doesn't gain much from beating Truth at this point, but it's certainly an upgrade from the string of incessant losses Sandow has had since winning the briefcase.

4. The Great Khali (w/Hornswoggle and Natalya) vs. Fandango (w/Summer Rae). Khali slapped Fandango around for the first minute of the match, but Rae jumped on the apron to cause a distraction. Fandango took out Khali's legs and managed to work over the big man for a few moments.

Khali made it to his feet, however, and he went back to his chop and slap routine. Khali chopped Fandango out of the air when he went for an attack off of the top rope and covered him for the pinfall victory.

Ryan's Reaction: This is the issue with having so many attractions for the kids on the roster, you inevitably have more than one instance of that attraction on a particular show, and it leaves the show feeling like it consists of more filler than it actually does. There was collectively less comedy matches on the show than there was the great opening match, but by the time the show ends the comedy matches and special attractions outweigh the quality of the opener. This is why I can't understand WWE's mentality with often saving one of the more lackluster matches for the main event of a show that shares the same name. Thanks for following along with me this evening.
