WWE Raw on the USA Network
Aired live from Austin, Texas at Frank Erwin Center
[Q1] Raw opened with a highlight package that focussed on the C.M. Punk, Paul Heyman, and Brock Lesnar, and the setup for the John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan match at SummerSlam. The video closed with the narrator saying that the road to SummerSlam begins tonight... Michael Cole, JBL, and Jerry Lawler were on commentary...
The drumroll played and when the lights went on in the arena, general manager Brad Maddox stood in the ring. Maddox stood in front of a table and chairs and said there's no one more Texas than he is. He set up the John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan contract signing for their SummerSlam match. Maddox introduced Cena, who came out to the usual mixture of cheers and boos. "Let's get the kickoff to SummerSlam started," Cena said into the camera before heading to the ring.
Cena sat down in one of the chairs for the contract signing. Maddox asked Cena why he selected Daniel Bryan. Cena said he listened to the WWE Universe and the choice was clear in his mind. Maddox said some people would say Cena selected Bryan because he's sure he will beat him. He also noted that some people feel Bryan is unstable and has relationship issues. Cena said Maddox looked a little uncertain.
Daniel Bryan's music played and he walked onto the stage with a big smile on his face and then pumped up the "Yes!" chants as he headed to the ring. The live crowd was responsive and chanted his name once he was in the ring. Bryan said Maddox seems to think he doesn't deserve a shot at the WWE Championship, yet the people seem to disagree.
Cena stood up and told Bryan that he chose him because Maddox and the dumbasses he works for ignore talent even when the beard is staring them in the face. Cena spoke about the size difference between the two and said if that's what matters, then Maddox should take the title to the back and give it to The Great Khali.
Cena listed Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio, and Eddie Guerrero as examples of wrestlers who "prove that ability and passion make a WWE Champion not just size and strength." An Eddie chant broke out briefly. Cena said the WWE Universe loves Bryan right now and he's proud of him for that. Cena said he chose Bryan for the match because he earned it and deserved it.
Cena said being WWE Champion his about facing the best competition and sometimes that comes from an unlikely source. Cena said he picked Bryan to compete in the match. "Just because you've been given this opportunity does not mean I am going to hand you this championship," Cena said. He then signed the contract and said he's going to SummerSlam to defend the WWE Championship.
"You are the best competition in the WWE right now and I will prove at SummerSlam that even the best isn't good enough," Cena said. Another Daniel Bryan chant broke out and he signed the contract. Bryan tried to respond to Cena, but Maddox cut him off with the announcement of the match. Bryan told Maddox that he doesn't get to interrupt him.
Bryan said he has waited his entire career for the opportunity and he's proven he deserves it. Maddox said Cena believes he does, as does "a very vocal minority" of the WWE fans. He said he was going to give Bryan a chance to prove it. Maddox said Bryan would compete in a series of matches. He engaged in a yes/no battle with the live crowd over whether Bryan will prove himself worthy...
Cole hyped Mark Henry firing back on The Shield during Raw... A split screen shot showed Alberto Del Rio and Sheamus...
Powell's POV: Maddox seems to have caught the pesky bipolar bug that has plagued Stephanie McMahon's character, as he was heelish tonight after coming off like a babyface last week. I like the way Cena praised Bryan yet also said he wasn't going to give up his title without a fight. I get a kick out of the way creative is positioning Bryan as the man of the people, as it plays perfectly to the paranoia that so many of his diehard fans have regarding his status with the company from week to week.
[Q2] [C] A graphic boasted that the WWE Magazine has more readers than several popular magazines combined...
1. Alberto Del Rio vs. Sheamus in a non-title match. Del Rio immediately targeted the bruised thigh that Sheamus was nursing coming out of the Money in the Bank pay-per-view. The thigh looked much better than the photos he released, yet it was still black and blue. Del Rio threw repeated kicks at it throughout the early portion of the match. At 3:30, Del Rio attempted to apply an arm bar over the ropes, but Sheamus punched him, causing Del Rio to tumble to ringside heading into the break. [C]
After the break, Sheamus came back with a slam. Lawler said he would have gone for a backbreaker, but he could not because the leg was bothering him. Damien Sandow was shown watching the match on a backstage monitor with the Money in the Bank briefcase in hand. Sheamus came back and delivered the ten forearms to the chest.
[Q3] Sheamus performed the backbreaker after all and sold it as if it caused him pain. Sheamus went to the ropes and Del Rio caught him with a running kick. Del Rio covered Sheamus for two. Sheamus went back on the offensive and set up for the Brogue Kick. Del Rio ducked it and then superkicked Sheamus to the thigh. Sheamus responded with a White Noise attempt, but his leg gave out and Del Rio rolled him up on his way down and pinned him...
Alberto Del Rio defeated Sheamus in a non-title match in 13:25.
Powell's POV: A good match that played perfectly into what they've been doing with Del Rio. Just as he went after Dolph Ziggler's head injury, he relentlessly went after the injured thigh of Sheamus. Del Rio has turned up the intensity and is really shining. Sheamus loses nothing here despite being pinned because his injury was well established.
Cole hyped Miz TV with the cast of Total Divas. They also confirmed that Miz will be the host of SummerSlam... Lawler hyped an update on C.M. Punk's physical and mental state following the Brock Lesnar attack... [C]
The WWE Rewind showed Vince McMahon naming Vickie Guerrero the permanent general manager of Smackdown...
Backstage, Renee Young interviewed Booker T and Teddy Long. She noted that Booker thought he was returning to his position as the Smackdown general manager. Booker said he respects Vince's decision, but he was a bit shocked. Teddy said he filled in for Booker for three months and took abuse while Booker was at home with his feet propped up.
Booker defended himself by pointing out that he underwent surgery. Teddy said he was left holding the bag. He said that despite all he's done for Booker and Smackdown, Vickie threw him out of the building. Booker said he would throw Teddy out of the building if he kept running his mouth. Teddy said that since he wasn't named GM, maybe Vince made the right decision...
Powell's POV: Wait, they're still moving forward with this Booker and Teddy thing even though they're not feuding over the general manager position? Creative must have something they're excited about in mind for them. God help us all.
Christian made his entrance. Cole noted the recent winning streak Christian has been on and said he would be in action after the break... [C]
[Q4] After the break, Christian's annoying entrance theme was still playing. Those poor fans...
2. Christian vs. Titus O'Neil (w/Darren Young). Cole noted that Titus said he and Young want to make a splash as singles wrestlers. You know, because apparently they've dominated the tag division. They also wished Shawn Michaels a happy birthday. Lawler noted the birth of the royal baby. Fandango's birthday received no love.
Titus gained control and threw a series of kicks at Christian in the corner and blew the whistle that he brought to the ring with him each time he threw a kick. Christian came right back. He dropkicked Darren Young off the apron, but ran into a shot from Titus, who got a two count. Christian responded with the Killswitch for the clean win...
Christian defeated Titus O'Neil in 4:40.
The announcers recapped footage from Smackdown of Ryback beating up Chris Jericho after Jericho's loss to Curtis Axel...
Backstage, Josh Mathews interviewed Ryback and asked him if he enjoys intimidating others. Ryback said he does enjoy it and referred to Mathews as a little twerp. He said Josh is about average size and said he hates average. Ryback said whether it's taking money in the playground or manhandling anyone he wants, the big guy needs to eat...
Powell's POV: Be a STAR!!! Ryback has gone from being a crybaby to being a bully as they continue to search for the character for him.
Mark Henry made his entrance and the announcers recapped The Shield attacking him last week. Henry said he's proud of the fact that he's a born and raised Texan, which drew a big pop. He also mentioned his hometown for another pop.
[Q5] Henry said he's proud of the effort he put into his WWE Championship match against Cena. He said he's not proud of what happened when The Shield attacked him last week. Henry said that any man who took a whooping like he took is willing to give one out. Henry said he didn't want to lull the fans to sleep. "I'm wide awake and if The Shield wants me, I'm right here," Henry said before setting the mic down.
The Shield's music played and they made their usual entrance through the crowd. Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns surrounded the ring. They eventually entered and Henry fought them off for a moment before losing the numbers game. The Uso Brothers' music played and they ran out for the save.
Henry recovered and joined the Uso's in clearing Rollins and Ambrose from the ring. Reigns took a few shots until he was pulled to ringside by his partners. Henry's music played to end the segment...
Powell's POV: Pretty basic segment there with the expected outcome of the Uso Brothers saving Henry and the babyface trio standing tall. There's no announcement of a SummerSlam six-man tag match yet, but all signs point to it happening. Henry turning and now getting to play to the home state fans was nicely timed (or a nice coincidence).
Backstage, Daniel Bryan was warming up for his matches when John Cena entered the room. Cena told Bryan that he has a hunch Maddox isn't making his own choices because he was nervous. Bryan told Cena that he will be fine on his own. Cena said he just wants Bryan to make it to SummerSlam in one piece.
Bryan said Cena would be saying the same thing if he were in his place. Bryan said he has a chance to prove that he belongs. "I'm going to fight and I'm going to win," Bryan said. He told Cena not to deprive him of the opportunity because doing so would prove that all of the compliments Cena gave him earlier were just a load of crap... An ad aired for Total Divas, which debuts Sunday night on E... [C]
3. Dolph Ziggler vs. Darren Young. Ziggler received a big pop when his music hit. Highlights aired from Smackdown of Ziggler saying he's sorry he didn't dump A.J. Lee sooner. A.J. flipped out backstage and had an awkward near kiss moment with Big E Langston. Roughly a minute in, Ziggler caught Young with a nice dropkick.
Young came back and the crowd chanted "Let's go, Ziggler." Young tossed Ziggler by the hair across the ring. Later, Ziggler avoided a charging Young in the corner and then came back with a corner splash.
[Q6] Young had another moment of offense when he caught Ziggler on his shoulders and dropped him down face first before getting a two count. Ziggler got up and hit the Zig Zag for the win...
Dolph Ziggler pinned Darren Young in 4:20.
After the match, Big E Langston hit the ring and attacked Ziggler while A.J. Lee watched from ringside. Ziggler tossed Langston to ringside. As Langston was getting back in the ring, Dolph used his quickness to zip right past him and then celebrated his accomplishments on the stage...
Powell's POV: It's good to hear the live crowd was hot for Ziggler as they were considering that his babyface turn hasn't exactly been smooth. First C.M. Punk gave Young a lot of offense, and now Ziggler did the same. Young did a better job here than he did during the Punk match. He has some cool offense, but the live crowds need some incentive to take him seriously.
The announcers pimped the WWE app, C.M. Punk's segment, and Miz hosting the cast of Total Divas on Miz TV... [C]
Powell's POV: Now that WWE was kind enough to show you dimwits how to download an app, show off your newfound intelligence by downloading the FREE Prowrestling.net app. It's a life changing experience.
A SummerSlam commercial aired...
The Miz stood in the ring while the cast of Total Divas sat behind him in director's chairs what were set up in the ring. Miz said he will be the host of SummerSlam in less than four weeks. Less than four people responded with cheers. Miz set up footage from Total Divas. The footage showed The Bella Twins being catty with Eva Marie and Jo-Jo.
Miz introduced The Bella Twins, Eva Marie, Jojo, Natalya, Cameron, and Naomi. I'm pretty sure Miz got two of the names wrong. Miz introduced Jerry Lawler, who acted surprised by Miz calling for him to join him in the ring. Lawler introduced himself to the new Divas and also butchered Eva Marie's name.
Eva Marie took the mic and said she didn't like the way Lawler was looking at her. She said she was there to make a name for herself. Eva slapped Lawler across the face. Lawler turned it over to Miz, who gave a plug for Total Divas debuting on E on Sunday night...
Powell's POV: Okay, so it looks like Eva Marie is a heel with the Bella Twins, while Jo-Jo was seated with the babyface Divas. This was shorter and certainly less painful than I expected. Let's hope I feel the same way on Sunday night.
A graphic showed Daniel Bryan and two question mark graphics for his potential opponents. Unlike TNA on last week's Impact, they didn't use the actual silhouette of the mystery wrestlers...
[Q7] [C] Backstage, Brad Maddox was on the phone when Triple H entered the room. Hunter mocked the idea of Maddox feeling Bryan isn't big enough, strong enough, or championship material. "It almost sounds like someone put words in your mouth," Hunter said. He added that he doesn't care what Vince McMahon thinks. Hunter said he believes Bryan could be the future of WWE.
Triple H said he didn't override Maddox's decisions because Bryan is so driven that he will overcome anything. Hunter said there are two trains leaving the station and Maddox needs to choose wisely which one to get on. He said one train is the future and the other is a dead end. Stephanie McMahon entered the office as Hunter left. She said she has an idea and she needs Maddox to get onboard. He said he would be...
Powell's POV: Yawn. Same schtick, different week.
The announcers set up a Wyatt Family video package... Fandango and Summer Rae made their entrance as some fans danced and hummed along. Lawler acknowledged that it's also Fandango's birthday. They broke out the big Fandango light up thing that hangs above the ring... [C] An ad for Smackdown played up the Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes feud...
Powell's POV: Dot Net pervert, er, reader George wrote to say that something perky slipped out during the Divas segment. You're welcome! That sound you hear is thousands DVRs rewinding to Miz TV.
[Q8] A commercial aired for Superstars For Hope... Damien Sandow joined the announcers on commentary. Cody Rhodes made his entrance...
4. Fandango (w/Summer Rae) vs. Cody Rhodes. Sandow defended the way he won the MITB contract by saying he took advantage of an opportunity that presented itself. At 3:35, Cody went for a moonsault on a standing Fandango, who had to scurry into position to take the move. Cody came up holding his knee. Sandow climbed onto the ring apron. Cody shoved Fandango toward Fandango, then kicked him into the briefcase. Cody followed up with CrossRhodes for the win... [C]
Cody Rhodes defeated Fandango in 4:10.
Powell's POV: I'm still not sure why Sandow is considered the bad guy for beating Rhodes fair and square in the MITB match. Hell, I'd stand on Chris Shore's testicles to grab a penny if it was just out of my reach. I'd be wearing shoes, of course.
Cole hyped that The Bella Twins will be on NBC's Today show on Thursday morning...
C.M. Punk made his entrance as highlights were shown of his fight with Brock Lesnar from last week. Punk said he got his ass handed to him by Lesnar last week. Punk said Lesnar hit him with his best shots repeatedly until he was left a broken heap at ringside. Punk said that no matter how much Lesnar hit him with, he got up. Punk said he has 13 stitches in his head, a messed up ankle, elbow, and ribs, but he's still standing.
Punk said Lesnar can beat him down, but he can't keep him down. Punk listed Lesnar's credentials and said "maybe, maybe" being UFC Champion was most impressive. Punk said Lesnar has broken Triple H, John Cena, and Undertaker. Punk said Lesnar's biggest weapon always has been and always will be fear.
[Q9] Punk said he's seen some of the toughest men he's ever shared a locker room with be overcome by fear. "I am not afraid of Brock Lesnar," Punk said. "I am not afraid of Paul Heyman's monster."
Yoda's POV: Oh, you will be. You will be.
Punk said the ring is his. He said he's proven it to Undertaker, The Rock, and John Cena. He said he would have proven it to Lesnar last week had Heyman not stabbed him in the back a second time. Punk addressed Heyman and said there will not be a third time.
Punk said he won't pretend Brock Lesnar isn't a tough SOB or a monster. However, he said monsters were put on the earth and in his path for one reason - to be slaughtered. Punk said he will kick Lesnar's ass. "At SummerSlam, I want C.M. Punk vs. Brock Lesnar. I want The Best vs. The Beast," Punk concluded.
Paul Heyman appeared on the big screen and repeated "The Best vs. The Beast" line and said he likes it. Punk picked up the mic and asked if Paul was in the building or appearing via satellite. He said he would find him if he was in the building. Heyman, who was listed as appearing via satellite, took a jab a the Texas live crowd, as he spoke about how fortunate he is to be able to deliver his message without stepping foot in the state of Texas.
Heyman said Lesnar has an interesting theory about heroes. "Show me a hero and I'll show you a coward that ran out of options or a fool who is just too stupid to stay down," Heyman said. "So what are you, Punk? Are you a coward or are you a fool?" Punk paused and said, "I'll give that answer to you and your client at SummerSlam."
Heyman laughed. Punk told Heyman to tell him where he is so he could find him. Heyman said it bothers him that Punk doesn't realize that "we" were the WWE Champion. He said Lesnar is in the peak of his fighting career, while Punk is beat up from the Money in the Bank match and the beating he took from Lesnar.
"So if it's a fight that you want, C.M. Punk, your challenge for SummerSlam is accepted," said Heyman. "But please stop calling it The Best vs. The Beast because you know as well as I do, the best is the best and he's my client and he's my best friend in the world - Brock Lesnar." The crowd chanted Punk's name and then his music played to close the segment...
A shot aired of Rob Van Dam backstage. Cole said he would be in the ring after the break... [C]
Powell's POV: Great intensity from Punk. You have to love the way he wasn't satisfied with Heyman appearing via satellite and showed how badly he wants to get his hands on him. I like "The Best vs. The Beast" hype. Heyman's overconfidence in Lesnar is fitting following last week's angle and the size difference. Meanwhile, Punk's line about Lesnar not being able to keep him down was also perfect from his character's perspective. The build for this has been awesome and they're just getting started.
Cole hyped Alberto Del Rio vs. Rob Van Dam (likely in a non-title match) for Friday's Smackdown television show...
Powell's POV: That match will be taped on Wednesday in Corpus Christi. We are looking for correspondents for all of the WWE tapings in Texas this week. If you are going and can help, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
5. Rob Van Dam vs. Wade Barrett. RVD caught Barrett with a kick early, then got tripped up by Barrett from the floor. Barrett went on the offensive for the next couple minutes and came up with a bloody lip at one point.
[Q10] RVD came back with Rolling Thunder. Later, RVD threw a couple of kicks and then performed the Five Star Frog Splash for the win.
Rob Van Dam defeated Wade Barrett in 4:15.
A shot aired of Daniel Bryan walking backstage. Lawler questioned how many matches Bryan will compete in after the break... [C]
Powell's POV: It looked like an RVD kick to the face caused the cut that Barrett suffered. There was a little confusion when Barrett went to trip up RVD, but they recovered quickly. RVD continues to be over in a big way with the live crowds.
A shot aired of a Texas Longhorn. JBL said that if Jim Ross "was awake and sober" he would be breaking his television... The announcers hyped John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan for SummerSlam...
Daniel Bryan made his entrance for his series of matches. Zeb Colter led Jack Swagger and Antonio Cesaro onto the stage. Colter cut a promo as they walked to the ring. He said Stephen F. Austin would ask for a paternity test if he saw what his beloved Texas had become...
6. Daniel Bryan vs. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter, Antonio Cesaro). Swagger knocked Bryan down a couple times and yelled We The People. The live crowd delivered and anti-Oklahoma chant directed at Swagger. Bryan came back with a dropkick. He went for the suicide dive, but Swagger saw it coming and punched him. Swagger performed a Swagger Bomb and then did the We The People bit again, only to have Bryan catch him in the Yes! Lock for the submission win.
Daniel Bryan defeated Jack Swagger in 3:00.
[Q11] 7. Daniel Bryan vs. Antonio Cesaro (w/Zeb Colter, Jack Swagger). Justin Roberts introduced Cesaro as Bryan's opponent heading into the break. [C] The announcers narrated highlights of the action that occurred during the commercial break and pimped the app. At 8:00, Bryan caught Cesaro with a couple of running dropkicks after selling for a good portion of the match.
Bryan went to the top rope. With Colter distracting the referee, Swagger shoved Bryan off the top rope and into an uppercut from Cesaro. Antonio went for a cover, but Bryan kicked out. [C]
[Q12] The "this is awesome" chants fired up after the break. Bryan caught Cesaro in the Tree of Woe and blasted him with repeated kicks, then caught him with a sliding dropkick. Bryan set Cesaro on the top rope and then tried to suplex him, but Cesaro rolled onto him before they hit the ground and got a two count.
Bryan and Cesaro traded shots in the ring. Cesaro got the better of it with an awesome series of European uppercuts, which he followed up with a big clothesline for a two count. Cesaro showed frustration over not getting the pin. He picked up Bryan for his finisher, but Bryan backdropped him instead.
They traded punches again and this time Bryan got the better of it and wrapped him up in a leg lock before dropping punches on him. Cesaro came back, but Bryan threw him to ringside, then performed a suicide dive onto Cesaro and Swagger. Bryan went to the top rope and Cesaro cut him off, but Bryan shoved him off. Moments later, Cesaro threw Bryan into the air for the uppercut, but Bryan avoided it and caught him with a small package on the way down for the win.
Daniel Bryan pinned Antonio Cesaro in 20:00.
As Bryan celebrated his wins, Brad Maddox was shown watching the match on a backstage monitor with Alex Riley. "Let's see how good he does against this next one," Maddox said... [C]
Powell's POV: I'm surprised the internet is still functioning after that match. It may be indestructible after all. Excellent work from both men. Here's hoping that changes the way they've approached Antonio Cesaro thus far. I assume Big Show is the "next one" that Maddox teased.
8. Daniel Bryan vs. Ryback. Bryan threw some kicks to Ryback's leg, but Ryback came right back and talked smack at Bryan. Ryback kicked Bryan a few times and yelled at him to get up. Bryan got up and Ryback put him back down with a headbutt and then mocked the fans by yelling Yes!
A small portion of the crowd taunted Ryback with a "you can't wrestle" chant. He cupped his ear, then applied a chinlock and said, "Too easy." Ryback followed up with a Thesz Press, but Bryan rolled him into a half-crab. Ryback reached the ropes to break the hold. Ryback came right back with another shot that knocked Bryan to the mat. JBL questioned if there would be someone else if Bryan beat Ryback.
[Overrun] Ryback went for his Meathook Clothesline, but Bryan caught him with a knee and then a pair of missile dropkicks. He went for a third, but Ryback caught him with a clothesline for a two count. Ryback went to ringside and pulled a table out from underneath the ring and set it up on the floor.
Bryan dove over the top rope and onto Ryback at ringside. Ryback crashed into the announcers' table. Ryback came back and shoved Bryan into the ring steps. Ryback moved the table into position on the floor and then went back to the ring, where Bryan greeted him with a series of kicks. Ryback went for a powerbomb, but Bryan fell onto him for a two count.
Bryan went for a Yes! Lock, but Ryback flung him across the ring by the hair. Bryan caught him with a pair of kicks. Bryan went to the top rope and performed a missile dropkick for a two count. Bryan applied the Yes! Lock on Ryback in the middle of the ring. Ryback inched toward the ropes and eventually got there to break the hold.
Ryback rolled to ringside. Bryan dove at him in huracanrana position, but Ryback twisted him around and dumped him onto the floor. Ryback picked up Bryan and powerbombed him through the table on the floor. The referee called for the bell.
Daniel Bryan beat Ryback by DQ in 9:20.
Ryback went after Bryan again, but John Cena ran out and fought him him off. "After a half-hour fight, you want to put this man through a table," Cena said over the house mic. "How about you try to do the same thing to me. You and me in a tables match," Cena said. Ryback said if that's what Cena wants, that's what he'll get. The announcers hyped Cena vs. Ryback in a tables match for next week...
Backstage, Vince McMahon entered Brad Maddox's office. Maddox tried to sell him on the Cena vs. Ryback main event. Vince asked him what about Daniel Bryan. He said he should face someone bigger and stronger than he is. He threw out the idea of Bryan facing a friend and said maybe even a best friend. Maddox said Bryan vs. Kane. "You damn right," Vince responded...
Back in the arena, Bryan rolled inside the ring and was getting Yes! chants. The announcers narrated highlights from the Bryan vs. Ryback match. Bryan was shown watching those highlights on the big screen. The announcers hyped Bryan vs. Kane, and Cena vs. Ryback in a tables match for next week...
Powell's POV: Hey, what happened to Big Show returning tonight? I'm not complaining after getting all of that focus on Bryan, though Show would have been a great final hurdle for Bryan tonight. As enjoyable as it was to see Bryan get so much of the spotlight on Raw, the big question now is how he delivered. He certainly held up his end of the bargain in the ring, but it will be very interesting to see how his matches performed in the ratings.
Overall, I was definitely entertained by the hype for the two big SummerSlam matches. Punk and Heyman were great on the mic again, and Bryan got the huge buildup going into his match with Cena. Only two matches are official and I'm already looking forward to this SummerSlam more than most years. Thanks for watching along with me tonight. I will be by later with a member exclusive audio review, and back on Tuesday with the WWE Raw Hit List.
