5/29 Kester's WWE Main Event Live Coverage Review: Wade Barrett vs. Sheamus, Justin Gabriel vs. Antonio Cesaro, and Tons of Funk and R-Truth vs. 3MB
May 29, 2013 - 07:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

Main Event on Ion Television
Taped 5/28/13 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

[Q1] The Miz, Josh Matthews, and Ricardo Rodriguez welcomed us to the show…

1. Sheamus vs. Wade Barrett in a non-title match. Sheamus took control early and manhandled Barrett. Barrett found a surge of energy and clotheslined Sheamus to the floor. Sheamus sold at ringside… [C]

Back from the break, the announcers set up some shots of Sheamus' arm taking damage. Barrett focused his attack on the injury in between working over Sheamus' midsection. Sheamus got in a few hope spots, but Barrett remained in control.

Barrett hit a big boot that sent Sheamus back to the floor, and Barrett followed with an elbow drop from the apron.

[Q2] Sheamus rolled out of the way of a second elbow drop, but Barrett quickly caught him with another boot. The two men traded near falls as the show went to commercial… [C]

Barrett continued to get the better of Sheamus as he choked him on the ropes. Sheamus began making his comeback and locked in the Texas Cloverleaf. Barrett crawled to the ropes to break the hold.

Barrett blasted Sheamus with two mule kicks to get a great near fall. Barrett went for Wasteland, but Sheamus countered it into White Noise. Sheamus crawled to the corner and called for the Brogue Kick. Sheamus charged right into Barrett's Winds of Change for another near fall. The crowd chanted "this is awesome."

Barrett went for a pumphandle slam, but Sheamus slid out and hit the Irish Curse for a near fall of his own. Sheamus set up or the battering ram, but Barrett cut him off and scooped him up for Wasteland. Sheamus kicked out at the last second.

Barrett went for the Bullhammer, but Sheamus sent him tumbling to the apron. Sheamus hit his clubbing blows and set up for another White Noise, but Barrett fought him off. Barrett went for another Bullhammer, but Sheamus managed to hit him with the Brogue Kick before he could connect.

Sheamus covered Barrett and picked up the 1-2-3…

Sheamus defeated Wade Barrett in 21:18.

Ryan's Reaction: Fantastic match. Both men got to show off their entire arsenal and it made for one hell of a back and forth affair. This was easily the best match I have seen between the two.

[Q3] The Raw Rebound focused on John Cena's new stipulations for Payback and Ryback's subsequent attack… [C]

The Bray Wyatt and Wyatt family vignette aired…

A recap of the Highlight Reel segment from Raw aired…

[Q4] [C] 2. Antonio Cesaro vs. Justin Gabriel. Cesaro tore into Gabriel and flattened him with a clothesline for an early two count. He followed with a gutwrench suplex for another rear fall.

Gabriel got a brief flurry of offense, but Cesaro locked in a chinlock until Gabriel faded. Before the ref could call the match. Cesaro released the hold and hit the Neutralizer for the pinfall victory… [C]

Antonio Cesaro defeated Justin Gabriel in 4:09.

Ryan's Reaction: Good, albeit brief outing for Cesaro. Cesaro's aggressive chinlock looked much more impressive than its usual rest hold application, and I like the way he ended with one last power move when it obviously wasn't necessary. Good heel work.

3. Tons of Funk (w/ The Funkadactyls) and R-Truth vs. 3MB. Brodus Clay and Heath Slater started. Clay quickly dragged Slater to his corner and tagged in Tensai.

3MB took over briefly and worked a few quick tags, but Tensai made it to Truth. Truth rolled around the ring and caught Mahal with a kick. The rest of 3MB ran in, but Tons of Funk easily dispatched them.

Tons of Funk flatted Mahal with a double running splash and Truth followed with Little Jimmy to put Mahal away.

Tons of Funk and R-Truth defeated 3MB in 2:26

Ryan's Reaction: That was a waste of time, but it was a relatively inoffensive waste of time. The announcers did refer to Tensai as Tensai rather than Sweet T, so hopefully that's a sign WWE will actually do something worthwhile with him soon. Overall, this show was a solid edition of Main Event. I'll never understand why they give the a hot match at the beginning of the show only to meander through undercard matches and video packages to close the night on a lukewarm note.
