Smackdown on The CW Network
Taped on 10/7/08 in Spokane, Wash.
[Q1] A video recapped the events of the Big Show/Undertaker match at No Mercy, slowing down and exaggerating the knockout punch…The opening montage played, followed by the pyro and Jim Ross announced Triple H vs Big Show for the WWE championship as the main event tonight…
Vickie was in the ring in full neck protection wear with Chavo. Could she get any more over with the crowd? She said two weeks ago, she wasn’t wearing a neck brace until she was brutally and savagely attacked by Taker. The crowd popped big for his name. She said she could still hear her vertebrate breaking and the crowd cheered. She said she still feels the pain and the crowd cheered. She paused and a huge “You Suck” chant broke out. She said Sunday night, Taker got his. She said he was left in the middle of the ring quivering like the slime he is. She said the man that did it was going to be rewarded by facing Triple H for the belt.
Big Show’s music hit and he came to the ring. He kneel beside Vickie and asked her if she was OK. Chavo looked on unhappily. Show took the mic and said he told us. He told us that he was going to handle the Undertaker. He said all of us cheered for the Taker to find his dark streak and recover, but it was nothing compared to his right hand. He said Taker would never be the same again. He played another video, this time of just the knockout punch while creepy music played. Back to the ring and Show said nothing compared to his right hand. It was his equalizer. He said no man had ever got up from a blow from it. He said that tonight, Triple H would know exactly what hit him. He said after tonight, he would be known as the man who put out Taker and the WWE Champion.
Vladimir Kozlov’s music hit and he came to the ring. He got in the ring, said some Russian, and then said he was challenging the winner of tonight’s main event. Show said he was going to give Kozlov two reasons that was a bad idea. One, Show’s a giant. Two, while some people here didn’t like him, at least he was an American. They stared off…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Nice setup for the main event tonight. Show looks very credible for the first time since Wrestlemania. Kozlov is getting the Goldberg treatment if he get’s a title shot. I’m not saying it’s not deserved, but it is a pretty quick build up from intro to main event status. By the way, it’s good to be back.
[Q2] The last commercial was for tonight’s Smackdown. Weird…
1. Brie Bella defeated Natalya w/Victoria. Bella attacked at the bell and beat down Natalya for about a minute. Natalya hit a stiff clothesline and took control. Brie rolled out of the ring and went to slide under the ring, dragging Victoria with her. Victoria slid out quickly looking shocked and Hornswoggle came out and “sexually harassed” Victoria. Brie slid out of the opposite side she went under and winked at Natalya. She slid back under and quickly popped out the side she went under. Back in the ring, she hit the crucifix for the win…
A video package aired describing John Cena’s injury and the storyline cause of the Batista bomb. Batista was interviewed and put over Cena and said what happened was an injury that could happen to anyone in the business. The doctor said Cena could be back in four to five months…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Fun twist to the Bella story with Horny coming out…well…horny. Why are they plugging Cena so hard? Let him go away and get fresh.
Back from commercial and Funaki was practicing his interview skills. R-Truth rolled in and asked Funaki what his real name was. He asked him what his government name was. Funaki said his name was Kung Fu Naki. No shit. R-Truth started singing “Everybody loves Kung Fu Naki, even when he’s drinking his saki.” He continued on but I was laughing too hard to catch it all. He finished and left to make his ring entrance…
[Q3]Triple H was shown sending a text message vote for Cyber Sunday. Jeff Hardy sat down beside him and said he didn’t think it was fair to have to defend his title so soon against someone like Big Show. He said he wanted to wish Hunter luck. He got up, sat right back down and said he also wanted him to know that he was going to challenge whoever won the belt tonight. He doubted whether Hunter could win tonight…R-Truth made his ring entrance.[C]
Shore’s Slant: The Killings bit with Funaki was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. Nice to see Hardy’s not been locked out of the title hunt yet.
2. R-Truth defeated Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin started off in control and beat R-Truth down. Truth semi-speared Benjamin and landed several blows. Truth sent Benjamin towards the ropes but he slid and popped up, turning around into a clothesline that leveled Truth. Benjamin locked in a face lock for a minute that Truth countered into a belly to back for a near fall. Benjamin reversed an Irish Whip and caught a corkscrew elbow that landed funny. Benjamin kicked out at two and took over the match again. Killings came off the ropes and reversed a tilt-a-whirl slam attempt into a strange cradle for the win…
The announce team plugged Jeff Hardy vs MVP later…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Decent match between these two. I feel like it could have been much better, but I don’t know it wasn’t. Hardy/MVP and WWE title match in same night. Welcome to a new network!
[Q4]Back from commercial and the announce team plugged Santino’s Intercontinental Title match at Cyber Sunday. Oh please God let it be Golddust…
3. Jeff Hardy defeated MVP. As MVP came to the ring, a little bubble with Gregory Helms picture appeared and said “MVP. An the “p” is for please. Please win a match. I’m just sayin’.” The announcers didn’t seem to see it for some reason. The match started out with some good back and forth before Hardy hit a front suplex and setup for the Swanton. MVP rolled out of the ring and tried to regain focus…[C]
Back from commercial and Hardy went for his sit down corner dropkick but MVP countered with a kick of his own for a near fall. MVP locked in a rest hold and then reversed a Hardy fight out into a face plant. He locked in a back bearhug on the mat to work on Hardy’s back. Hardy fought out and MVP hit a facebuster and went back to the back.
[Q5]Hardy fought out again and this time hit a Whisper in the Wind for a near fall. He threw MVP into the corner and hit a dropkick that sat MVP down. He nailed the corner dropkick and then another on MVP’s back as he tried to get up. Hardy hit the Swanton for the clean win…
Post match, Kozlov’s music hit and he came to the ring. They squared off and traded a couple of hits and kicks before Hardy went for the Whisper in the Wind. Kozlov head speared him out of the air. Kozlov stood over Hardy yelling at him in Russian and working the crowd…A Triple H ego video aired with the closing graphic being a plug for the main event…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Sorry I don’t have a time on these matches, my timer seems to be broke. The Hardy/MVP match was stellar as always. I don’t know where the MVP character goes from here. The clean win is refreshing, but also surprising. I have no idea why Helms popped up like that. At least I think it was Helms. I’m a little rusty tonight so I could be worng. Kozlov once again gets the unstoppable force push. Kozlov vs Show ought to be pretty good. Does anyone think that Triple H is going to lose after they virtually fellated him with that video?
A video aired of some weird looking guy name Kizarny. He talked like Snoop Dog taught him English so I’m not really sure what he said…
Shore’s Slant: WTF was that?!?!?!
Maria was introduced as the guest ring announcer…
Shore’s Slant: I knew it would get weird. I friggin knew it.
4. Carlito, Primo, Jesse, and Festus defeated Curt Hawkins, Zach Ryder, Kenny Dykstra, and Ryan Braddock. During the heels entrance, Helms appeared again and said “Here’s a foursome that strikes fear in…absolutely no one. I’m just sayin’.” The announce team again seemed to have no clue. The bell rang and Festus went nuts. They got him on the apron and the match started. Primo started the match and tagged in Carlito. Festus got the hot tag from Carlito and cleaned house.
[Q6]The other three took out everyone so Festus could get the win on Dykstra. Post match, Festus drooled on Maria for a little bit until Jesse led him away. Maria waved and looked stupid. Primo and Carlito celebrated in the ring…[C]
Shore’s Slant: OK, please somebody tell me they saw Helms too. If not, those mushrooms I had for dinner were bad…or good depending on how you look at it. This match accomplished nothing other than allowing these guys to work for a minute and a half.
Another Cena ego video aired. Everyone put him over and amazed at the fact that he was at the arena. And I mean everyone: Triple H, Batista, the doctor, Maria. She brings such amazing credibility to the story…
Back in the ring, Khali and Mini-me stood there with their backs to three jobbers. Mini-me showed a video of Johnny Knoxville asking Khali if he had a big dick. Well, he did. He then showed the video of Khali swallowing Lillian Garcia on Raw. He said that Khali had challenged Knoxville to show up to Raw on Monday…
5. The Great Khali w/Runjin Singh squashed Three Guys. Khali raised his arms and yelled. Two guys ran, one guy got the big chop for the foot pin…
Post match, Mini-me picked the biggest woman in Spokane to kiss Khali. Khali was laughing and trying to make a break for it but his big ass was too slow. Mini-me asked the girl how much she weighed and then said it didn’t matter. Ouch. Khali finally kissed her…[C]
Shore’s Slant: I think Khali was the last thing before the break. I was busy throwing up in my glass from the kiss. It was like a scene out of Buttugly and the Beast. I didn’t buy the comedic Khali when I first heard it. I was W.R.O.N.G.
[Q7]The Raw Rebound aired recapping Chris Jericho’s guest GM job this past Monday and his JBL vs Batista match. For those who didn’t see or read it here, it was a Batista screwjob until Adamle showed up and sent a new ref to the ring so Batista could win. Adamle then announce the World Title match at Cyber Sunday with Jericho vs Batista with either Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, or Steve Austin as special referee. The announce team then covered the voting (standard text messaging rates apply)…
A video recapped the end of the Hardy/MVP match and the actions of Kozlov afterwards. JR announced that because of the events, next week it will be Jeff Hardy vs Vladimir Kozlov. Back stage, Kozlov babbled and then said next week he will break Jeff Hardy in half…Triple H made his way to the ring…[C]
Shore’s Slant: If Hardy wins next week, they have to put the title on him. Kozlov doesn’t necessarily get that same deal, but if Hardy can be the first to beat Kozlov, they have to put the belt on him. So look for Kozlov to win.
[Q8]6. Triple H fought The Big Show to a No-Contest in a WWE Heavyweight Championship Match. Is Hunter using spray tan? King of Kings? More like the King of Ommpa-Loompa’s. Show pushed Hunter over the turnbuckle at the beginning of the match. He followed Hunter out and shoulder tackled the ring post but immediately got in the ring and head butted a returning Triple H. Hunter climbed back up and hit a jawbreaker. He went after Show who reversed his move into a sidewalk slam…[C]
Back from commercial and Show had Hunter in a neck/head rest hold. A replay showed Show gorilla press slam Hunter during the commercial. Hunter tried to fight out but Show hit a legdrop/DDT for a two count. Show threw Hunter into the corner and went in after but Hunter kicked him and locked on a piggyback sleeper before Show flipped him off his back. Show missed an elbow drop. Hunter hit a face buster and went for a Pedigree. Show picked him up and hit a Celtic Cross type move. Show stood up and teased the right hand. He swung but Hunter ducked and hit a punch himself. Hunter went to the ropes and Show caught him and chokeslammed him. Show picked up Hunter and the lights went off.
The church bell sounded and the lights came on and Undertaker was in the ring. He went crazy on Show who quickly fled. The lights went off again and when they came back on, Taker was behind Show. They fought to the back and Kozlov ran out and attacked Triple H. He hit the headbut, knocking Hunter down. Jeff Hardy ran to the ring and was shoulder tackled by Kozlov. Kozlov celebrated and got hit from behind by Hardy and Hunter. They knocked him out of the ring and celebrated while the crowd chanted USA. Suddenly, Hardy hit a Twist of Fate on Hunter and then went back to starring down Kozlov as they show went off the air…
Shore’s Slant: Well, that was certainly a full ending. The Hunter/Show match wasn’t bad for a TV match that is supposed to further two different storylines. The live crowd half cheered, half stared when Hardy dropped Hunter. Awkward moment but a nice advance of the storyline. Nice to see Taker wasn’t kept off for a week to sell the punch. He still looks dominating and yet vulnerable. Of course, that’s why he is a future hall of famer. Decent show that put on some fireworks for MyNetwork. Thanks for reading.
Oh and Happy 10th Ginger. I don’t know if you’re a hero or an idiot for staying this long, but thanks for putting up with me for a decade.
