10/7 Powell's ECW Live Coverage: C.M. Punk and Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne and Ricky Ortiz vs. The Miz and John Morrison and Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes
Oct 7, 2008 - 09:00 PM |
ECW on The Sci-Fi Channel
Taped in Spokane, Wash.
[Q1] The opening montage aired... Todd Grisham and Matt Striker introduced the show and hyped the eight-man tag main event...
1. Tommy Dreamer and Finlay (w/Hornswoggle) vs. Mike Knox and Jack Swagger. Grisham said they'd been waiting for Swagger to step up in competition and "tonight is that night." Dreamer took control of the match, but was cut off by a big boot from Knox before the break. [C]
After the break, the heels worked over Dreamer until he made a hot tag. The crowd popped for Finlay entering the match. He hit a dropkick off the second rope and followed up with his finisher on Knox, but Swagger broke up the pin attempt. With the referee distracted, Hornswoggle hit the Tadpole Splash on Knox. Finlay hit Knox with the shillelagh while the ref's head was turned and then scored the pin.
Powell's POV: During the commercial break, they advertised Johnny Knoxville's appearance on Raw next week. Hasn't the Jackass thing run its course? The live crowd was really into the match and they were especially hot for Finlay and Hornswoggle.
[Q2] At ringside, the announcers noted that they were already counting down to Halloween... Backstage, Teddy and Tiffany were wearing costumes. Jamie Noble entered the room and flirted with Tiffany. Mark Henry and Tony Atlas stormed in and demanded a rematch with Hardy. Noble mouthed off, so Henry asked for a match against Noble. "Make it happen," Noble said while trying to impress Tiffany...
A video hyped the Boogeyman's return... [C]
Powell's POV: Ugh. They're really taking this Halloween stuff seriously.
At ringside, Grisham hyped that Friday's Smackdown was the highest rated show in the history of MyNetwork TV. Striker hyped the Cyber Sunday show and told viewers how they could vote...
2. Mark Henry (w/Tony Atlas) defeated Jamie Noble in 3:25. The announcers noted that Henry appeared to be favoring his knee following his No Mercy match with Matt Hardy. Noble got a hope spot, but Henry finished him off with the World's Strongest Slam.
After the match, Henry hit Noble with his finisher two more times. Matt Hardy ran out for the save and the live crowd loved it. Hardy hit the Twist of Fate on Atlas, but turned around and Henry caught him with the World's Strongest Slam.
[Q3] Henry followed up with two big splashes on Hardy. Henry left both Hardy and Noble lying in the ring as the show cut to commercial... [C]
Powell's POV: The match was forgettable, but Henry's post-match attack on Noble and Hardy was well done. I'm happy they're sticking with the Hardy vs. Henry feud.
The Raw Rebound aired... At ringside, Striker did a "Stone Cold" impersonation... The announcers recapped the previous segment...
Powell's POV: It all makes sense now. Matt Striker is Shark Boy.
The babyface ring introductions for the main event took place... [C]
[Q4] The heel introductions too place after the break...
3. The Miz and John Morrison and Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes (w/Manu) defeated C.M. Punk and Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne and Ricky Ortiz in 11:25. Just two minutes into the match, the babyfaces cleared the heels from the ring and the show cut to commercial. [C] The next few minutes of the match were slow as the heels took turns working over Bourne to set up the hot tag.
Later, Kofi hit a great springboard flying body press onto a group of heels at ringside. In the ring, Punk hit the high knee on Morrison and set him up for the GTS. Manu climbed onto the apron and distracted Punk. While the ref was bickering with Manu, DiBiase reached in and snapped the back of Punk's head off the ropes. Morrison hit the Moonlight Drive and scored the pin for his team...
Powell's POV: That wasn't as entertaining as I expected it to be. We didn't get any big high spots from Bourne. Kofi's body press was terrific (and poor Cody look like he was the only one who caught Kingston on the way down), but there was nothing particularly memorable about the match. It wasn't bad, but I expected more from these guys. The days of the overrun appear to be over as the show ended right at the top of the our.
