9/5 Twilling's West Coast WWE Smackdown Coverage: Triple H vs. The Great Khali in a lumberjack match, MVP vs. Shelton Benjamin, The Brian Kendrick vs. Jeff Hardy
By Rich Twilling Sep 5, 2008 - 11:59 PM

WWE Smackdown on The CW Network
Taped 8/31/08 in St. Louis, MO

[Q1] The Killer Kowalski graphic was shown...

Footage aired of Vickie Guerrero apologizing to The Undertaker as well as everything Vickie put him through over the past several months...

The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Jim Ross and Tazz welcomed us to the show. JR plugged the lumberjack match between Triple H and The Great Khali...

Triple H's King of Kings music hit and he came out with the WWE Championship over his shoulder. H said Joey Styles and "the nerds" at WWE.com told him he has an 80 percent chance of losing his title. Shelton Benjamin interrupted and reminded Triple H that he laid out Jeff Hardy, MVP, and Triple H last week.

Triple H said Shelton left out the part about losing to him. H told Shelton to come to the ring and meet him face to face. Benjamin was on his way before MVP came out and said he was better than everyone in the match. Shelton and MVP turned their attention to each other before Triple H interrupted.

He asked Shelton and MVP how long they have been working for the company. "It is the week before a pay-per-view. I come to the ring and talk about how I am going to defend the title on Sunday. That is called a 'promo' (complete with finger quotes). H talked about everything he would say and that the heels would run away. He said he would be champion for a century.

The Brian Kendrick and Ezekiel Jackson hit the ring and attacked Triple H. MVP and Shelton joined in before Jeff Hardy made the save. Jeff was going for a Swanton but Jackson stopped him from doing it. Triple H hit Zeke with a chair but it barely fazed him. Kendrick pulled Jackson from the ring as Triple H and Hardy stood tall... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Great segment that made Kendrick and Jackson look like stars. Everyone was solid on the mic and H was hilarious. Great start to the show.

[Q2] 1. R-Truth defeated Bam Neely (with Chavo Guerrero) in 2:13. Truth performed his entrance music and walked through the crowd. The crowd was not really into it. Tazz said that the performance was phat. JR responded with, "I'm down with that brother; word."

Bam looked like he has been sneaking meals out of catering. Bam enjoyed the advantage at the one minute mark before Truth hit a corkscrew flying forearm. Truth hit an awkward missile dropkick followed by an axe kick for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Not sure what it was, but something seemed really off with this match, like Neely was out of position a lot. When Truth smiles, he looks like Jamie Foxx.

JR and Tazz were on camera and said Vickie Guerrero would not be in the building tonight but The Undertaker would be. They plugged MVP vs. Shelton Benjamin and Jeff Hardy vs. The Brian Kendrick for tonight... [C]

[Q3] The Undertaker made his entrance for the live crowd and was already in the ring coming back from commercial. "Anticipation of death is far worse than death itself." He said he was coming for Vickie's soul at Unforgiven. He wanted her to think about his hand around her throat, her body confined to a "mahogany prison," and him setting the coffin ablaze. He said she would end up in Hades and would join her husband, Edge. He promised endless agony and an eternity in hell. The lights went off and back on again; The Undertaker was gone...

Twill's Two Cents: How would anyone know that? Death itself could suck pretty badly. That promo was funny. Violence towards women and first degree murder; yeah! We love you Undertaker!

MVP reluctantly made his ring entrance. Shelton appeared on the Titantron and talked about being the gold standard. Then his music hit. That was odd...

2. Shelton Benjamin defeated MVP in a non-title match in 3:45. Shelton resorted to physical brawling early in the match. MVP tried to leave but Shelton followed. MVP took the advantage as a result. MVP grounded Shelton with a modified Camel Clutch. Shelton kicked out of the Drive-by kick. He hit Paydirt out of nowhere for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: They wrestled as if they had fifteen minutes, which if they did, they would have a very good match. Shelton was good on the mic twice and has really embraced this push.

Maria was approached by Maryse, who said something in her language. Maria asked her to speak English. Maryse told her that her clothes were ugly or something like that...

JR and Tazz ran down the rest of tonight's card... [C]

[Q4] 3. Maryse defeated Maria in 3:03. They fought to the floor before reentering the ring. Maryse looked good as she continues to get better in the ring. She hit a DDT for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Brutal, physical action between the two. Nice win for Maryse.

After the match, Michelle McCool walked out on the stage and went face to face with Maryse. Maryse whipped her hair at Michelle and walked away. Michelle had a cheesy smile pasted to her face...

JR ran down the card once again for tonight... [C]

4. The Brian Kendrick (with Ezekiel Jackson) defeated Jeff Hardy in 4:57. Both men began the match at a pretty brisk pace with Jeff scoring most of the offense before hurting his leg. Kendrick hit two big kicks and scored a two count.

[Q5] Kendrick slowed things down with a prolonged reverse chinlock. Hardy gained the advantage after Kendrick missed a charge at Hardy into the corner. Hardy hit a reverse powerbomb, flipping Kendrick all the way over. As Hardy reentered the ring, Zeke violently pulled him back into the retaining wall. Brian hit The Kendrick for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Another solid albeit short match. Kendrick and Jackson are quite the duo.

Backstage, a guy rolled a wheel chair up to a limousine. Vickie Guerrero yelled at the guy because she said she did not need the wheelchair. In a funny moment, she told the guy to get out of her way and proceed to turn and walk in the opposite direction... [C]

5. Super Crazy defeated Ryan Braddock in 1:19. Crazy hit a nice moonsault for the win...

After the match, Vladimir Kozlov came down to the ring and said something to Crazy in Russian. He kicked Crazy out of the ring. He said Crazy was not competition. Kozlov said he was not playing games and wanting a bigger challenge.

Big Show came out to the ring. Show said that both he and Kozlov were competitive and challenged him to a match. They started to circle each other in fighting stances but Vickie Guerrero hauled ass down to the ring and ordered the stoppage of the fight. She told Kozlov to get out of her ring. He angrily did so.

[Q6] She turned her attention to Show. She told him never to disrupt her show again. She told him to go home or she would fine and suspend him indefinitely. She said it was not an oversight. Show quickly left the ring and retreated to the back.

Guerrero remained in the ring and had an announcement for The Undertaker. She said she would not be intimidated anymore by him. She said she would no longer be a victim and she was not scared of him. She said Vickie would get Undertaker to apologize to her at Unforgiven... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Looked like Crazy was getting a push but I guess they squashed that. I like how Kozlov did not back down to Show. Vickie is annoying as shit. If she really wants Taker to apologize, why not threaten termination?

6. Brie Bella defeated Victoria in 2:49. Brie wore pink and red together. I am not Calvin Klein or anything, but isn't that a fashion no-no? No problem though; she is gorgeous. Just like last week, Brie climbed under the ring and "came out quickly on the other side" before winning the match with a rollup...

Twill's Two Cents: I guess we are still not spoiling this yet. I am intrigued by it.

Josh Matthews, Mr. Kennedy, and Mickie James cut another promo in favor of voting. Mickie really seemed to make the rounds speaking with the heavyweights of political media... [C]

[Q7] In case you have been living under a really heavy rock, the Raw Rebound showed footage of the Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels saga. This was followed by JR and Tazz running down the card for Unforgiven this Sunday...

Eve Torres interviewed Triple H backstage. She asked him what his greatest concern was. He said global warming or the economy. He said you overcome one obstacle and you looked the next one in the face while staring down Jeff Hardy. Hardy said Triple H had a big problem on Sunday and it was him. H said Hardy knows about problems and Hardy has two strikes. "Three strikes, and you're out of the game."... [C]

[Q8] The lumberjacks were shown at ringside as both Khali and Triple H made their entrances...

7. Triple H defeated The Great Khali (with Ranjin Singh) in a non-title lumberjack match in 9:56. Triple H went right at Khali but was quickly overpowered. Khali knocked H to the floor and of course, the heel lumberjacks took turns kicking Triple H as the show went to its final commercial... [C]

Coming back from commercial, Khali was in control. Upon throwing H out of the ring, the heels teamed up on him again. Jeff Hardy came to the aide of Triple H but the heels took him out. Back in the ring, Khali hit the two handed chokeslam for a long two count. Triple H came back but the lumberjacks pulled him out of the ring.

Hardy took everyone out. H Irish whipped Kendrick awkwardly into the steel steps. Kendrick is lucky to have not broken his arm there. Triple H hit a spinebuster but could not follow up the Pedigree. Khali locked in the vice grip. H hulked up to fight out of the move. He hit the Pedigree and scored the win...

Triple H celebrated with the belt and Jeff Hardy applauded him in the ring. H patted Hardy on the back and Hardy surprised him with a Twist of Fate. Hardy stood over Triple H as the show went off the air...

Twill's Two Cents: Remember when something like that meant someone was turning heel? I love what Hardy did here. As for Khali, he is looking better on offense but he still sucks at selling moves. The show did a nice job creating intrigue for Sunday.

What did you think of WWE's Jeff Hardy "unconscious in a stairwell" storyline?
It was a brilliant final hook for the pay-per-view.
It was a turnoff, but it's par for the course with WWE.
It was one of the sleaziest stunts the company has ever done.
