ECW on The SciFi Network
Taped 8/25/08 in Wilkes-Barre, PA
[Q1] The opening video aired and really cool looking fireworks lit up the stage. Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcomed us to the show...
Tiffany walked out to the stage and introduced Teddy Long. Teddy danced with Tiffany. Teddy said he told Shane and Stephanie McMahon that if Raw and Smackdown can do a Championship Scramble, ECW can do it better. He said qualifying matches would take place throughout the night. They cut to a shot of Grisham and Striker and Striker has a surfer "part and comb to the side" hairdo going on tonight. Looks like me in the eighth grade...
1. Matt Hardy defeated John Morrison in a Championship Scramble qualifying match in 12:24. Hardy enjoyed an early advantage before Morrison gained it for himself. Hardy came back and hit a Side Effect for a nearfall. He went for a Twist of Fate but Morrison countered it by laying Hardy out across the top rope and knocking him to the floor... [C]
Morrison had Hardy locked in a submission hold, a reverse chinlock with a knee in the back, coming back from commercial. Morrison scored a nearfall with a combination backbreaker/Russian leg sweep. Striker called professional wrestlers the best athletes in the world. He's correct.
[Q2] Hardy scored a series of nearfalls after hitting various big moves. Both men exchanged nearfalls for a couple of exciting sequences. Hardy kicked out of the springboard shining wizard by Morrison. Morrison tried the Moonlight Drive but Hardy countered it into the Twist of Fate for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Very good match, especially after the commercial. Grisham and Striker were especially good here too. Great start to the show.
After the match, Tiffany told Teddy that Matt Hardy is one of her favorites. Mark Henry and Tony Atlas entered. Henry asked Teddy what he had against him and said the Scramble was unfair. He said no one could beat him one on one. Teddy said life was not fair and all three championships could change hands at the PPV. "Will one of them be yours, playa?" Henry stormed off... [C]
The Raw Rebound aired, showing footage of SummerSlam and John Cena injuring his neck in his match vs. Batista. Mike Adamle named Rey Mysterio as Cena's replacement at the PPV...
Back to the show, an obvious voiceover by Grisham talked about Cena's successful neck surgery today...
2. The Miz defeated Evan Bourne in a Championship Scramble qualifying match in 7:01. Bourne worked over Miz with an armbar early in the match. Both men exchanged quick nearfalls before Bourne applied the armbar once again. Miz gained the advantage and hit some moves on the floor.
[Q3] Miz hit a front suplex for a nearfall before applying a leg scissors to Bourne's midsection. Bourne hit two huge kicks followed by a hurricarana for a two count. In a cool spot, Bourne went for a top rope hurricarana and Miz vacated the corner, causing Bourne to crotch himself. Miz hit the Reality Check (reverse neckbreaker) for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Very enjoyable match. This was a great example of how losing clean does not have to bury someone. Bourne looked fantastic and Miz pulled out the victory at the end. Heels should not always have to cheat to win.
A split screen showed Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely on the left and Tommy Dreamer on the right getting ready for their upcoming match... [C]
Did you know? WWE.com has more visits than four or five really popular men's websites. That is pretty impressive; much more so than beating a NFL preseason game in the ratings...
3. Chavo Guerrero (with Bam Neely) defeated Tommy Dreamer in a Championship Scramble qualifying match in 3:37. Striker put over Dreamer as a guy to pattern your career (work ethic) after if you breaking into the business. Great line by Striker. As expected, Chavo bounced around for Dreamer like a pro.
Tommy hit a running powerslam for a two count. Chavo put himself in the tree of woe. Striker made a Joey Lawrence joke by saying "Whooooa." Bam stood on the apron and Chavo pushed Tommy into him. Tommy went down and Chavo hit the world's ugliest frogsplash for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Decent action and selling by Chavo but the outcome was predictable.
[Q4] Josh Matthews, Batista, and Candice Michelle talked about the importance of voting at the Democratic National Convention...
Twill's Two Cents: Voting is a privilege. You should have to pass a test before you are allowed to because too many dumbasses turn eighteen and are able to.
The announcers plugged Finlay vs. Mike Knox in the final Championship Scramble qualifying match... [C]
Striker ran down the rules of the Championship Scramble. Why would they be any different than the other two, for which we already know the rules?...
4. Finlay (with Hornswoggle) defeated Mike Knox in a Championship Scramble qualifying match in 12:18. Striker referred to the SummerSlam commercial that started this feud and the heads of the creative team exploded. Striker then scored a rare point in the media for the Republicans by comparing the flip flopping of Knox wanting to fight to Barrack Obama.
Both men fought to the floor as Striker compared Bruiser Brody to Knox... [C]
The voiceover guy compared the Championship Scramble to Hell in a Cell and the Elimination Chamber. Not quite but I like how they are selling this random PPV as something special. Hopefully they do this every year...
[Overrun] Finlay had a hammerlock applied on Knox coming back from commercial. Knox retreated to the floor, Finlay followed, and Knox hit a powerslam. Back in the ring, Knox showed his mat skills with a reverse chinlock with a knee in the back.
Knox went after Hornswoggle but Finlay met him with a closeline, sending him over the top. They quickly reentered the ring and Finlay took a big boot after attempting the Celtic Cross for a nearfall. Knox tried to untie the turnbuckle pad. The referee was distracted and Finlay brought in a shillegleh. Knox knocked it away and the referee was distracted again. Finlay brought in a second shillegleh and knocked out Knox for the win...
After the match, a bunch of kids danced in the ring with Hornswoggle as Striker faked his struggle to announce the PPV match...
Twill's Two Cents: Knox is money. I know he lost but if you look close enough, he is a star waiting to happen. I like the finish of the match to continue their feud. I do not like it in terms of putting Finlay over as a championship contender.
I loved the show tonight. Four matches of this quality in one hour is not something you see too often. What did you think? Let me know by shooting an email to dotnetrich@gmail.com.
