ECW on The SciFi Network
Taped in Wilkes Barre, Pa.
[Q1] The opening montage aired... Tiffany walked onto the stage and introduced Teddy Long. The announcers said he had a major announcement. Long said whatever Raw and Smackdown can do, ECW can do it better. He announced there will be an ECW Championship Scramble at the Unforgiven pay-per-view.
"Now I'm not going to get into all the rules, but if you want to know what the rules are check out WWE.com," he said. Long said all the matches on this show would be qualifying matches... The announcers recapped Long's announcement at ringside.
Powell's POV: The announcers were made to look like dopes since the commercial aired during Raw last night that announced the ECW version of the Championship Scramble. Of course, the show was pre-taped, but it's not like WWE is acknowledging that. For that matter, Teddy looked silly for making the announcement. Oh well. It's certainly not the end of the world, but it is poor attention to detail.
1. Matt Hardy beat John Morrison in a ECW Championship Scramble qualifier in 12:30 After some back and forth action, Hardy went for the Twist of Fate, but Morrison picked him up and placed him on the ring apron. Morrison knocked Hardy to the floor with a forearm. [C]
[Q2] More back and forth action after the break. Morrison springboarded off the ropes and hit a kick for a very good nearfall. In the end, Morrison went for the Moonlight Drive, but Hardy avoided it and hit the Twist of Fate for the clean pin. Good match.
Powell's POV: Very nice television match. The live crowd was with the wrestlers all along.
Backstage, Teddy talked to Tiffany about Hardy qualifying. Mark Henry and Tony Atlas walked into the room and protested. Henry did the talking while Atlas said, "That's right." Henry said he can beat anyone in a one-on-one match and the Scramble concept isn't fair. Teddy said up to three championships could change hands at Unforgiven. "The question is will one of them be yours, player," Teddy asked... [C]
Powell's POV: WWE is really playing up the likelihood of a title change on this show. They've repeatedly stated that the champions are at a disadvantage. Even Triple H said it's likely he'll drop the title on Smackdown last week.
Highlights aired from Raw of Mike Adamle announcing that Rey Mysterio would replace John Cena in the Raw version of the Championship Scramble...
The announcers stated that Cena underwent surgery earlier today with Dr. Maroon. Their comments were overdubbed since this show was taped last night. Nice touch...
2. The Miz pinned Evan Bourne in an an ECW Championship Scramble qualifier in 7:05. The announcers noted that Miz's game plan was to ground and pound Bourne.
[Q3] Bourne had a couple of high flying moves, but Miz grounded him with a leg scissors and punches to the head at one point. Bourne came back and scored a couple of nearfalls. Hit hit a big knee in the corner and then went for a top rope move, but Miz pushed him off and Bourne bounced off the top rope like a pinball. Miz hit the Reality Check and scored the pin... [C]
Powell's POV: The announcers did a nice job of putting over Miz's strategy in the match and and questioning what Bourne had to do to put Miz away. The match was entertaining. I'm disappointed that Bourne won't get a pay-per-view appearance, but Miz has worked his ass off and deserves a spot. By the way, Frank Caliendo's impersonation of William Shatner in that DirecTV commercial is really weak.
Did you know WWE.com has more monthly visits than NFL.com, UFC.com, Maxim.com, FHM.com, and NASCAR.com? Now you do...
3. Chavo Guerrero (w/Bam Neely) beat Tommy Dreamer in an ECW Championship Scramble qualifier in 3:35. Striker advised children who are looking to get into wrestling to model themselves after Dreamer. He put over his passion and said the children should work on their physique so they don't have to wear a t-shirt in the ring. OK, he didn't really say that part about the t-shirt.
Dreamer sold a rib injury early, yet continued to dominate the action. Striker did a Joey Lawrence impersonation while referring to the Tree of Woe as the "Tree of Whoa." No, really. Chavo came back and dropkicked Dreamer into Neely, who was standing on the ring apron. Moments later, Chavo hit the frogsplash for the win.
Powell's POV: Chavo gets in but John Morrison is out? Ugh.
[Q4] Josh Matthews interviewed Batista and Candice Michelle from the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Batista mumbled and Candice squeaked...
The announcers hyped Mike Knox vs. Finlay for after the break... [C]
Powell's POV: I'm surprised by the lack of hype for Knox vs. Finlay tonight. They even did an angle for this match on Smackdown, so I thought there would have been more buildup tonight.
Maybe you haven't heard, but WWE Smackdown is moving to MyNetworkTV...
The announcers ran through the Scramble match rules. Well, at least they're trying...
4. Finlay (w/Hornswoggle) pinned Mike Knox in an ECW Championship Scramble qualifier in 12:20. Striker said the feud started because Knox said Finlay went soft after seeing him dance with Horny in a SummerSlam commercial. Striker said it's entertainment and Knox needs to learn the difference between fact and fiction. Back and forth action to start.
[Overrun] Knox applied a chinlock. Fortunately, Horny was there to pound the mat and get the live crowd back into the plodding match. At 11:00, Knox grabbed Hornswoggle by the collars, but the little guy slipped away by taking off his jacket. Damn.
Later, Finlay tried to use the shillelagh, but Knox kicked him in the gut and he dropped the weapon. As the referee cleared it from the ring, Finlay struck Knox with a second shillelagh and scored the pin. Hornswoggle ran around the ring with a few kids after the match as the announcers hyped the ECW Championship Scramble for the pay-per-view...
Powell's POV: Slow, plodding match. There was some stiff brawling spots, but this wasn't as entertaining as I thought it would be. I'll have more to say about the show in the ECW Hitlist. Dot Net Members will get the First Look at the ECW Hitlist shortly.
