5/18 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Final hype for Over the Limit, CM Punk makes an appearance, Cody Rhodes vs. Santino Marella, and Sheamus vs. Randy Orton
May 18, 2012 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on Tuesday in Hershey, Pa.

[Q1] A video recapped the announcement of the stipulations of the John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis match... Johnny Laurinaitis made his ring entrance to considerable heat as Michael Cole, Booker T, and Josh Matthews checked in on commentary. Johnny Ace said, with all due respect, he disagreed with the decision of the board of directors. He said he has been put in harm's way because the board prevented the way he was going to face Cena.

Ace said he was close to 40 and wasn't as flexible as he once was. He said he could still bench 250 pounds and runs a six minute mile, but that didn't mean he was able to face Cena. He said he asked the board to reconsider and they said no, so he was asking the fans to support him. The crowd booed and Ace said he didn't expect them to cheer him, but he hoped everyone would say a prayer tonight.

CM Punk's music hit and he came out to a great pop. Punk asked why Ace didn't get it. He said everyone was already praying, and their prayers had been answered. He said the only way for Ace to win was by pinfall and submission, and when John Cena beats him, Ace gets terminated. Punk said he wanted to be the first to wish him luck in his future endeavors. Punk said they would be parting in the street for weeks after Sunday.

Punk asked if Johnny realized how much he made people miserable. He said Johnny had a seven foot giant on his knees begging for his job and did it with a smile on his face. He ran down some of Johnny's other douchebag moves, and asked how it felt to be on the other end of the stick. Ace said he wasn't there yet. He said he was still GM and could still make matches so Punk had t face Kane. Punk put over Kane and said at least he respected Kane. He said next week he would still be the WWE Champion, and Johnny would be in the unemployment line. Punk's music and he left.

Ace complained to the crowd about liking it when someone disrespects their boss. He put himself over and said the harder he works, the more the fans want to crap on him. Ace blamed the crowd for Punk's and Cena's actions. He said he detested all of them and said they could all go to hell. He dropped the mic and stormed from the ring. The announce team bickered about Laurinaitis and hyped the Sheamus vs. Orton main event...

The announcers spoke at ringside and Cole defended Laurinaitis's statements. They also hyped the main event... [C]

Shore's Slant: Punk went a long way here in getting Ace a little more heat. He did a good job of laying out Laurinaitis's sins and then turning them back on him. The match needed a little of that and it got it. Nice work from Punk and Ace here.

[Q2] An abbreviated version of The Make a Wish video aired... The tag champs made their entrance as the announce team hyped the tag title match at Over the Limit. The new tag team on Smackdown were out next...

1. Kofi Kingston and R-Truth vs. Darren Young and Titus O'Neal. Truth and Young started. Truth knocked Young around and tagged Kofi. Kofi hit a high cross body for two, but Young took advantage of an O'Neal distraction to hit a back suplex on the apron. O'Neal tagged in and beat up Kofi for just a second before Kofi hit a kick and both men tagged out. Truth hit his Pay Dirt move for the win...

Kofi Kingston and R-Truth defeated Darren Young and Titus O'Neal at 3:00.

A new Be A Star video aired... Zack Ryder was backstage doing his show and stopped when he saw Damien Sandow. Sandow looked disgusted and walked off...

Shore's Slant: Why job O'Neal and Young out? You've spent a few weeks building them up just to have them prove they aren't ready for the big time yet? I mean, no one was confused by that, but why remind everyone? Strange decision. Mark Henry talking about being bullied will never cease to amaze me.

[Q3] Damien Sandow made his entrance tot he ramp. Yoshi Tatsu was announced in the ring. Sandow cut a promo on the way to the ring. He said it was his passion to set us free from our chains of ignorance. He said he started to usher in the age of enlightenment two weeks ago, but found his opponent unworthy so he refused to expose us to the "abhorrent contest" that would have resulted. He said Yoshi was equally unworthy and therefore would not be wrestling him. Sandow said, "Your welcome," and left.

Tatsu took the mic and called Sandow a chicken. He started making chicken noises and flapping his arms. He went to give the mic back to Tatsu and Sandow dropped his robe. He attacked Yoshi from behind and hit a neckbreaker move that had him cross Yoshi's arms across his own face. Cool spot. Sandow left the ring and posed on the ramp...[C]

Shore's Slant: More good stuff from the Sandow character. I like what they are doing with him. Hopefully they won't emasculate him like they did Young and O'Neal earlier in the show.

Several videos recapped the burgeoning feud between Sheamus and Randy Orton. Backstage, Matt Striker interviewed both men at the same time. Sheamus said he was looking forward to the Fatal Fourway to show what type of champion he is. Sheamus said like one of his opponents, he can be a hot head, but he can channel it in the ring. He said that's why he's champion, unlike his opponents.

Orton said like one of his opponents he used to be overconfident and would come across like an idiot. He said he could win the title Sunday without pinning the current champion, but he couldn't think of a better person to pin in the match. Sheamus said he could kick on of his opponents in the face right here, but he won't because he's a nice guy. Orton got in his face and said Sheamus was a nice guy, and they knew where nice guys finished...

Zack Ryder made his ring entrance, followed by Daniel Bryan...

[Q4] 2. Zack Ryder vs. Daniel Bryan. Bryan attacked at the start and twisted Ryder all over the place. Ryder elbowed out of a hammer lock and hit a drop kick. He tried for the Broski Boot, but Bryan hit a drop toe hold, followed by a kick, and the Yes Lock for the submission victory...

Daniel Bryan defeated Zack Ryder at 2:27.

A close up of Kane's face was used to hype his match with CM Punk for next...[C]

Shore's Slant: Really good promo segment with Sheamus and Orton. I was surprised by how good they worked off each other. So Daniel Bryan defeated Zack Ryder in two minutes, and now Kane is going to wrestle Punk for close to 10 minutes (guessing) and this is supposed to make me want to see Kane vs. Ryder on Sunday? Nobody thinks about these things in WWE. Maybe it's just me.

Daniel Bryan had joined the announce team during the break. CM Punk was out first...

3. CM Punk vs. Kane. Kane shoved Punk down to prove his power, but Punk clotheslined him over the top rope quickly to cut to break...[C] Back from commercial, Punk hit a DDT and went to work on Kane's legs. Kane kicked Punk away and to the floor. Punk tried for a springboard move, but Kane punched him out of the air to take control.

[Q5] Kane slammed Punk under the ropes into the post and worked the ribs. He slammed Punk and locked on a body scissor. Punk fought out. Kane went for the chokeslam, but Punk slipped out and hit a neckbreaker. Punk hit the high knee in the corner and after fighting for it, hit the bulldog for two.

Punk continued to sell the ribs as he lifted Kane for the GTS. He dropped Kane because of the ribs and Kane hit a big boot for two. Kane put Punk on the top rope and climbed up. Punk knocked him off and hit the top rope elbow for two. Punk tried for the Anaconda Vice on the kick out, but Kane fought back and hit a side slam on Punk. He followed with the top rope punch and called for the chokeslam.

Punk stood up and Kane grabbed his throat. Punk hit a roundhouse kick that spilled Kane to the floor in front of the announce team. Punk hit a dive that left both men down. Bryan grabbed a chair and teased hitting Punk but hit Kane instead. Punk grabbed the chair as Bryan ran off. Kane saw Punk with the chair and attacked him. He hit him with the chair about six times, and then rolled Punk in the ring for two chokeslams as Bryan watched with glee from the ramp...

Kane defeated CM Punk by disqualification at 11:41.

The announce team hyped the main event and Santino vs. Cody Rhodes for next...[C]

Shore's Slant: I don't care what anyone says, Kane can flat go in the ring. He's not compelling for long periods of time, but the guy can have great matches and that was one of them. It goes back to my point about it killing his match with Ryder, but I was flat entertained by this match. Good stuff from both men.

[Q6] A video recapped the tag match between Punk and Santino vs. Bryan and Rhodes. Santino made his entrance while a cut in video showed him making out with the US Championship. I shit you not. Cody made his ring entrance while the announce team showed some of the tweets from these two over the week...

4. Santino Marella vs. Cody Rhodes. Cody attacked first, but missed a top rope moonsault. Santino pulled out the sock and called for the cobra. Cody hit a drop kick. Cody hit the ropes. Santino split ducked the clothesline and hit the cobra for the win...

Santino Marella defeated Cody Rhodes at 1:59.

A video recapped Big Johnny telling everyone to go to hell. The announce team hyped a replay of Big Show's firing for next...[C]

Shore's Slant: Ugh. That's really all I can say. Ugh.

The Big Show firing from Monday replayed... Randy orton made his ring entrance...[C]

[Q7] Sheamus made his ring entrance...

5. Sheamus vs. Randy Orton. The first three minutes of the match was brawling were neither man had control for longer than a moment. They spilled to the floor, and Sheamus reversed a whip into the stairs. He went for the Brogue kick on the post. Orton moved and slammed Sheamus's arm into the post and then on the stairs a few times...[C]

Back from commercial, Orton continued to focus on the shoulder. Orton worked a heel set by using the ropes to hurt the arm.

[Q8] Sheamus fired back and hit his clubbing blows on Orton over the ropes. He kicked Orton to the outside and collpased in the ring to recover...[C]

Sheamus dropped several knees on Orton as the show came back from commercial. Orton fired back and tried to whip Sheamus, but Sheamus hit a knee lift and a slam. Sheamus lifted for the Celtic Cross, but Sheamus slid out and hit his backbreaker for two. Orton ran his clothesline and powerslam series. He finished with a belly to belly suplex.

Sheamus rolled to the apron and Orton grabbed him for the DDT. Sheamus knocked him away and hit a hangman. He hit the slingshot shouldertackle and then a series of forearms and knee lift into a powerslam of his own.

The two men battled and Sheamus hit the Irish Curse backbreaker for two. Sheamus went to the top, but Orton swept the legs. Orton hit the top rope superplex for two. They batked again and Sheamus went for the Brogue kick. Orton ducked and Sheamus fell through the ropes to the apron. Orton followed with the rope DDT. Orton setup for the RKO, they reversed it back and forth until Sheamus scored a surprise roll-up pinfall.

Post-match, Orton sold being amused by the loss. He and Sheamus talked for a minute and put over the title. Sheamus shook Orton's hand, and then Orton hit the RKO to leave Sheamus laid out...

Sheamus defeated Randy Orton at 23:28.

Shore's Slant: Decent match, It didn't keep my attention like Punk and Kane did, but it wasn't a bad match at all. I'm a little surprised they gave away a 23 minute match on free TV like this, but ratings for Smackdown have been sagging. Maybe this is an attempt to boost those. Or maybe it;s an attempt to put some heat on a very lackluster card for Sunday's PPV. Jason and I will be here for all your Over the Limit live coverage and member's exclusive audio review this Sunday. I'll be back tomorrow with the Smackdown hitlist and all access audio review.
