4/2 Kester's WWE NXT Live Coverage Review: JTG vs. Derrick Bateman, Natalya and Maxine vs. Tamina and Kaitlyn, and Tyson Kidd vs. Johnny Curtis
Apr 25, 2012 - 05:30 PM

By Ryan Kester

NXT on WWE.com
Taped 4/24/12 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Matt Striker welcomed us to the show and he said that Josh Matthews would not be on commentary tonight, so he would fill the position along with several WWE superstars. Striker reminded the audience that Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins were fired. Striker then announced that Titus O'Neill and Darren Young had been drafted to Smackdown.

Striker said that new talent would be needed to fill that role, and William Regal was scouting talent as he spoke. Striker welcomed tonight's special guest match coordinator, which turned out to be Hornswoggle.

Hornswoggle made his way to the ring and reminded people that he can talk. Hornswoggle excited made a few matches, Percy Watson and Tyson Kidd vs. Johnny Curtis and Michael McGillicutty.

Hornswoggle called Derrick Bateman out and Bateman wasted no time in complaining about O'Neill and Young getting drafted despite him beating both of them before.

Bateman was quickly interrupted by JTG, who attacked Bateman from behind before declaring NXT as whack. JTG raged about not getting a spot on NXT and he damned a match. Bateman reappeared and threw JTG from the ring. Hornswoggle gave JTG a match against Bateman after the first break.

Hornswoggle joined Striker on commentary…

Ryan's Rant: Quick and effective opening that set up some matches for later on in the evening and established why Regal wasn't present tonight.

[C] 1. JTG vs. Derrick Bateman. Bateman took the early advantage and worked JTG over with a s series of chops.

JTG spilled to the floor and Bateman attempted to follow with a flying dropkick but JTG moved out of the way. Back in the ring, JTG went to work stomping Bateman before locking in a rest hold.

Bateman had a few hope spots while JTG worked his move set and mocked the crowd. Eventually, Bateman caught JTG with a boot but JTG hit lethal injection for a near fall.

Moments later, Bateman hit an inverted DDT for the pinfall victory...

Derrick Bateman defeated JTG in 4:41.

Ryan's Rant: JTG is slowly improving in the ring. He sold that DDT like a champ.

Backstage, a referee tried to handcuff Maxine and Johnny Curtis together. Maxine attempted to flirt her way out of it, but so did Curtis, so the referee quickly applied the handcuffs. Hornswoggle showed up and made Tamina and Kaitlyn vs. Natalya and Maxine. Hornswoggle feigned forgetting what Maxine's name…

[C] A video package recapping Brock Lesnar and John Cena's feud up to date aired…

Tyson Kidd was shown backstage. Percy Watson showed up and Kidd jokingly warned him that he was bad luck after what happened to his previous two tag team partners. Kaitlyn joined the fun and asked what the name of Kidd's new submission finisher is. Kidd said he hadn't come up with something yet, but he was considering having Twitter users name it for him.

Natalya showed up and got angry that Kaitlyn was talking to Kidd. Natalya vowed to take care of Kaitlyn tonight. Kidd and Watson bonded over "Diva drama…"

Ryan's Rant: I' not sure if I've mentioned this before or not so I will do so now, I am glad that Kidd is getting a different submission finisher than the Sharpshooter. The nods to the Harts were nice, but I am curious to see if Kidd can do any better by distancing himself from that history and doing his own thing for a while.

[C] Natalya met with Maxine backstage and Natalya laid out her desire to take out Kaitlyn. Curtis tried to sneak away but an official sent him to the ring…

2. Tamina Snuka and Kaitlyn vs. Maxine and Natalya. Tamina and Kaitlyn quickly dumped their opponents out of the ring. Natalya reentered the ring and went to work making good on her promise to attack Kaitlyn.

Natalya and Maxine worked quick tags as they wore down Kaitlyn. Maxine had a guillotine lock firmly applied but Natalya blind tagged into the match.

Kaitlyn quickly got the hot tag to Tamina, who floored Maxine with what looked like a botched step-over leg drop before nailing the Superfly Splash for the pinfall victory…

Tamina Snuka and Kaitlyn defeated Maxine and Natalya in 4:51.

After the match, Striker made Maxine join him on commentary while Curtis got ready for his match...

Ryan's Rant: That's not the first time Tamina has botched one of her few spots in a short match. She's displayed some talent before, but ever since she's been adopting her father's gimmick, her in-ring work has been a bit lacking. Still, ninety-percent of that match focused on the rest of the women, and each of them had a moment to shine.

[C] Backstage, Tyson Kidd found a fallen Percy Watson who declared Michael McGillicutty as his attacker…

Michael McGillicutty made his entrance to join Johnny Curtis. Tyson Kidd quickly followed with Hornswoggle. Hornswoggle threw Michael McGillicutty out and made the match Johnny Curtis vs. Tyson Kidd. Striker had McGillicutty join Maxine and him on commentary.

3. Tyson Kidd vs. Johnny Curtis. Curtis took the early advantage and worked over Kidd's arm. Curtis took some time to gloat and ate a back kick to his gut for his efforts. Kidd followed with a huracarana to the floor…

[C] Back from the break, Curtis was back in control and once again targeting Kidd's arm with a series of holds.

Eventually, Kidd caught Curtis with a series of kicks. Kidd went up top and Curtis followed with a superplex for a near fall. Kidd went back up top and hit a flying blockbuster for a near fall of his own.

Curtis fought back with a wheelbarrow suplex for another near fall. Curtis went up top and flew for a double-leg leg drop. Kidd moved out of the way and followed with his new submission finisher for the victory via tap out.

Tyson Kidd defeated Johnny Curtis in 10:25.

Hornswoggle rejoined Tyson Kidd in the ring and raised his hand to close the show.

Ryan's Rant: Good match to close a pretty solid edition of NXT. The backstage shenanigans had a better flow than usual and the matches were all decent to solid, and one really can't expect more form NXT.
