8/15 Twilling's West Coast WWE Smackdown Coverage: Shelton Benjamin vs. Jeff Hardy for the U.S. Title, Triple H vs. Kenny Dykstra, final SummerSlam build
By Rich Twilling Aug 15, 2008 - 11:59 PM

WWE Smackdown on The CW Network
Taped 8/12/08 from Norfolk, VA

[Q1] Footage aired of the events of last week with Edge secretly taking out the members of La Familia, followed by Edge revealing himself to Vickie Guerrero as the man behind the attacks...

The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Jim Ross and Tazz welcomed us to the show...

1. Jeff Hardy defeated Shelton Benjamin by disqualification in a United States Championship match in 15:32. Both men exchanged quick nearfalls within the first minute. Shelton grounded Hardy with a reverse chinlock. Hardy scored a nearfall as the show went to commercial... [C]

[Q2] Hardy had a leg scissors around Benjamin's head coming back from commercial. Benjamin fought back and powerbombed Hardy into the turnbuckles for a two count. Shelton continued on the offensive and scored many nearfalls. Benjamin hit an Olympic Slam for a two count.

Hardy evened things out with a jawbreaker. Both men rose at the same time with Hardy taking the advantage. Hardy hit a second rope Whisper in the Wind for a long two count. Shelton countered the Twist of Fate with brutal backbreaker for another nearfall.

With Hardy on the apron, Shelton attempted a sunset flip powerbomb but Hardy countered it into a hurricarana. Back in the ring, Hardy went for the Swanton but MVP pushed him off the top, causing the disqualification. MVP tried the drive-by kick on Hardy but hit Shelton instead. Hardy hit Swantons on both men...

Twill's Two Cents: That was a great match to start the show and like last week, the finish was both predictable and disappointing. Shelton continues to put forth fantastic matches.

Backstage, Vickie Guerrero was shivering when Victoria entered her locker room. Vickie asked if Victoria had seen Edge or The Undertaker. Vickie said both of them were here tonight and she did not want to be left alone. She cried as Victoria consoled her...

Triple H is in action tonight!... [C]

[Q3] JR plugged Vladimir Kozlov vs. Festus for later in the show...

2. Natalya and Maryse defeated Michelle McCool and Maria in 3:06. JR said all four women were talented, beautiful, and taller than Bob Costas. Maria and Natalya exchanged some solid offense before the heels took advantage. Maria tagged in Michelle, who came in was able to get the best of Natalya. Michelle took her eyes off of Natayla for a second and was rolled up for the pin...

Twill's Two Cents: Good action despite the abrupt ending. Michelle and Natalya looked especially good.

In case you missed it earlier, Triple H is in action tonight... [C]

[Q4] 3. The Brian Kendrick (with Ezekiel Jackson) defeated Scotty Goldman in 2:38. Kendrick and Jackson both spoke in a pre-match promo. Goldman gave an 80s style inset promo. Kendrick hit The Kendrick for the win amidst my satellite going in and out...

After the match, Zeke hit a running shoulder block on Goldman as Kendrick continued to celebrate...

Twill's Two Cents: More great stuff from Kendrick and Jackson.

The beautiful Eve Torres interviewed Triple H backstage. Kenny Dykstra entered and told Triple H he needs to worry about him more than Khali. H said Dykstra picked the wrong man at the wrong time... [C]

JR and Tazz welcomed us back to the show. JR said Smackdown was the number one program, besides the Olympics, on network TV last Friday...

The Great Khali and Ranjin Singh came down the ring. Khali was met with multiple "What?" chants as he gave a promo in his native language. Singh said Khali talked about his destroying of Triple H last week. Triple H is just an obstacle that Khali will easily step over.

[Q5] Singh continued by telling Triple H that he has been a part of the WWE universe for a long time. He told him to get out before Khali took from him everything he has built over the years...

Twill's Two Cents: What is the deal with this "WWE universe" saying everyone is forced to say? I will try. Everyone in the WWE universe wants a crack at Eve Torres.

4. Triple H defeated Kenny Dykstra in a non-title match in 1:21. Singh and Khali joined JR and Tazz on commentary. My DirecTV dish is pissing me off. Dykstra attacked Triple H as the bell rang because H was focused on Khali at ringside.

Triple H hit a spinebuster at the one minute mark. He followed that up immediately with the Pedigree for the win...

After the match, Triple H laid his belt out in the ring and came out after Khali. Singh stopped him and asked Triple H if he was out of his mind. H choked him and dragged him into the ring. Khali followed and Triple H was able to closeline him over the top rope, although he could not apply the Pedigree...

Twill's Two Cents: I guess losing to the champion in just over a minute is better for Dykstra than being off of TV forever, or being fired for that matter.

Coming up next: The Big Show! Everyone has old school "in action" videos tonight... [C]

5. The Big Show defeated Ryan Braddock in 1:26. Braddock received an entrance video and music. He looked very confident and came right after Show when the bell rang.

[Q6] Show hit the Cobra Clutch slam followed by one big right hand for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Good to see Show.

Eve approached MVP backstage but MVP grabbed the mic and handled things himself. MVP said the sorrow Hardy felt after missing Wrestlemania, having his house burn down, and having his dog die, would be nothing compared to the sorrow he would feel the day after SummerSlam. Everyone would not talk about how reckless Jeff is; they would say MVP is better than him... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Very effective promo. Well done.

Victoria was reading the newest edition of WWE Magazine. Vickie said there was a little part of her that still loved Edge but after what he did last week, she never wanted to see him again. She kept looking at a clothes screen and said she needed to get out of there. Victoria obliged...

Twill's Two Cents: If she is so pissed, why is she still wearing her wedding ring?

The latest R-Truth video aired showing him work out Clubber Lang style...

JR plugged Kozlov vs. Festus... Victoria wheeled Vickie to her limousine. Edge was sitting in the back and it scared the shit out of Vickie. Vickie slumped to the ground and Edge told her they were going to have fun tonight. He helped her back into the chair and spun her around as she screamed... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: If you were someone's boss and deathly afraid of them, wouldn't you just fire that person?

Did you know? More viewers watched Raw last Monday than Monday Night Football. Did you also know that this is the preseason and that would never happen in the regular season? ...

[Q7] 6. Vladimir Kozlov defeated Festus (with Jesse) in 3:25. The bell rang and Festus transformed, but Festus stood his ground. Festus knocked Kozlov to the floor and both men exchanged huge shots. Vladimir threw Festus into the entrance steps which allowed him to take advantage back in the ring.

Festus hit a fallaway slam and huge closeline. He scored a one count with a butt splash. Festus hit a bicycle kick and tried a big Irish whip move, but Kozlov hit the battering ram headbutt for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Anyone else think they missed an opportunity by giving this away? Festus is over and a slow buildup could have led to a PPV match between these two. Nonetheless, this was a fun, albeit short, big man's match.

JR put over Kozlov as Jesse tended to Festus... [C]

A John Cena vs. Batista video package aired. Even this video paled in comparison to the Edge and Undertaker video packages. JR and Tazz ran down the entire SummerSlam card...

Edge rolled Vickie around backstage like two kids playing with grocery store shopping carts. Vickie's scream was more of an "Eeeewwww, I have a spider on me" than it was a "Stop pushing me around." Edge told Vickie to buckle up as he continued to run her around the arena... [C]

[Q8] Footage aired of the Shawn Michaels interview from a couple of weeks back. According to the interview, Michaels went to the doctor today to get a final evaluation on his eye. As we all know, we will find out on Sunday...

Edge's music hit and he rolled a terrified Vickie Guerrero down to the ring. Vickie ended up out of her chair and on the floor. Edge looked at her with fake concern, grabbed a mic, and pretended to fall down next to her. Edge said although they were going through a rough patch, every marriage does.

Edge asked Vickie to remember the good times. He brought her in for a cuddle with both of them facing the Titantron. Edge aired a video taking the two of them down memory lane. The video began when Edge apologized to Vickie but she accepted the sentiment by informing Edge of her decision to reinstate The Undertaker.

The video moved forward to the footage involving Edge and Mick Foley from two weeks back. That segment is still fantastic. Fast forward to last week when Edge took out La Familia and tipped Vickie over in her wheelchair.

Vickie cried and Edge had a very psycho look on his face. Edge laid himself and Vickie down. He told her to apologize to The Undertaker and blamed her for all that happened. Vickie apologized to Taker. Edge called Vickie pathetic and said she caused all of the pain and suffering everyone was going through.

Edge said his heart was burning from the inside out and that he would burn in hell. Edge said Taker would burn in hell with him. He said he would show Undertaker the purest form of hell he had ever seen. Edge kneeled over Vickie and said, "Edge vs. Undertaker. Til death do us part." He looked up to the sky as Vickie wept...

Twill's Two Cents: This segment was not as good as the two that closed the last couple of shows. However, not many people could hype such a high profile match by himself and Edge did a fantastic job carrying that load. I am curious to see what he meant by this match stipulation and I am sure it is not the same as Kane's match with Matt Hardy a few years back.

Thanks for staying up and watching with me. Feel free to send your show thoughts to dotnetrich@gmail.com.
