4/18 Kester's WWE NXT Live Coverage Review: Johnny Curtis vs. Percy Watson, Kaitlyn vs. Maxine, Tyler Reks vs. Curt Hawkins in a loser is fired match
Apr 18, 2012 - 03:35 PM

By Ryan Kester

NXT on WWE.com
Taped earlier in London, England.

A video package narrated by Derrick Bateman covering Curt Hawkins' and Tyler Reks' history on the show aired…

1. Johnny Curtis (w/ Maxine) vs. Percy Watson. Percy Watson went on offense while Maxine joined the commentators. The announcers spent their time focusing on the Maxine love life storyline. Regal and Maxine flirted while Curtis made a comeback and the show went to break... [C]

Back from commercial, Curtis continued to work over Watson while Maxine denied involvement in Matt Striker's abduction. Josh Matthews tried to be the voice of reason in their discussion.

Watson eventually made his comeback and put Curtis away with Percycution.

Percy Watson defeated Johnny Curtis in 8:11.

After the match, Regal stood up and called Curtis to take Maxine's match as Maxine got in the ring for her match… [C]

Ryan's Rant: That match was ok. They had some time and they got their spots in, but the announcers spending the entire time on Maxine betrayed the fact that what they were doing was relatively meaningless. The idea they are running with is intriguing with how they will get both Curtis and Maxine's perspectives, but it directly takes away from the action going on in the ring.

2. Kaitlyn (w/ Derrick Bateman) vs. Maxine. Regal and Curtis discussed how terrible Maxine is and Derrick Bateman also joined the commentary to explain that he and Kaitlyn are now dating. Curtis denied involvement in the Striker abduction.

Maxine and Kaitlyn traded submission holds and Maxine fought to keep Kaitlyn off of her feet. Kaitlyn eventually gained the upper hand and hit a running cross body. It wasn't enough, however, as Maxine came right back and locked in a dragon sleeper that led to Kaitlyn tapping out.

Maxine defeated Kaitlyn in 3:33.

Regal called over Maxine and said he needed to address Striker's kidnapping. Regal relayed their comments from before and Regal said the only thing that would be fair after all of this is t make Maxine Curtis' legal manager. Regal said if they wanted to keep their jobs they had to sign a contract ensuring that they would always have to be with each other as long as they are on NXT.

They both signed eventually and Regal handcuffed the two together. Regal sent the shackled couple on their way…

Backstage, Titus O'Neill was dancing and Darren Young told him off. O'Neill showed him papers form John Laurinaitis saying that they were moving to Smackdown. Young forgot about Tamina and the two danced together...

Elsewhere, Striker was looking a bit too affectionately at Hawkins' cane… [C]

Ryan's Rant: They through a lot together in that stretch. The women's match was ok but suffered from the same problem as the first match, but I enjoyed Regal's work as he attempts to steer the ship that is this show. The O'Neill and Young stuff fell flat this week, but seeing how Striker will react to his captors is a good hook over the brief commercial break.

The Raw Rebound this week focused on Chris Jericho's recent attacks on CM Punk and the footage from Punk going into and out of an English pub…

Hawkins and Reks were backstage discussing their options and they said they would blame everything on Curtis and Maxine. Curtis and Maxine showed up and were still cuffed. Percy Watson, Kaitlyn, and Derrick Bateman walked by and mocked the misgivings of Maxine and Curtis.

Reks and Hawkins returned to their plotting for how they would get out of the consequences for kidnapping Striker… [C]

Reks and Hawkins made their way to the ring to deny involvement in Striker's abduction. They claimed Regal's video proof was doctored. Striker made his presence known and he talked about how he realizes that there are people that made fun of him but he felt like a part of a family in the WWE.

Striker said that Hawkins was dumb enough to leave his smoking gun, and he attempted to strike Reks and Hawkins with the cane but they ran. Regal put a stop to it and made Tyler Reks vs. Curt Hawkins with the loser losing their job. Reks attempted to refuse and Hawkins sucker-punched him.

Striker revealed his referee shirt and the show went to break… [C]

3. Tyler Reks vs. Curt Hawkins in a loser is fired match with Matt Striker as the special guest referee. Hawkins took an early advantage and targeted Reks' skull and neck.

Reks had a brief hope spot but Hawkins managed to sweep his legs out from under him. Reks kicked Hawkins to the floor and followed with a slingshot cross body to the outside.

Back in the ring, Reks began working through his offense and hit a reverse STO for a near fall. Hawkins battled back and the two traded reversals that ended with Reks utilizing a roll-up for the victory.

Tyler Reks defeated Curt Hawkins in 5:29.

After the match, Regal fired both men and officials sent both men from the building.

Ryan's Rant: Solid match, but it's weird to see a firing angle on a show already starved for people. I would like to see more form these two working together as they went for spots that they don't normally go for, and Reks could have something as a babyface. He's a big guy with a good move set that can perform high spots. Overall, this was an edition of NXT that featured decent matches with some fun William Regal revenge spots. If that's something you'd like to see, this is worth the watch, if not, well, then I consider this to be a pretty skippable edition of the show.
