4/11 Kester's WWE NXT Live Coverage Review: Johnny Curtis vs. Percy Watson and Tyson Kidd vs. Michael McGillicutty
Apr 11, 2012 - 03:10 PM

By Ryan Kester

NXT on hulu.com
Taped 4/10/12 in Hampton, Virginia.

Before the match, Watson complained about Maxine's presence, and Regal stood up from the announce table and instructed her to stay away from the ring. Maxine joined Matthews and Regal on commentary.

1. Percy Watson vs. Johnny Curtis (w/ Maxine). Watson quickly took control and hit a flurry of arm drags and dropkicks. Watson hit a leg drop for a two count. Maxine began to flirt with Regal at ringside. Regal ended up taking his headset off and speaking with Maxine.

Watson became distracted, and Curtis knocked him to the floor as the show went to break… [C]

Back from the break, Curtis continued to work over Watson as Regal spoke about a problem with Matt Striker. Curtis began to target Watson's arm and hit a leg drop on Watson's arm from the second rope.

Curtis went for the spot again but Watson punched him repeatedly and hit an arm drag. Watson ran through his offense again as Regal left with Maxine. Watson became distracted again and Curtis rolled him up for the three count…

Johnny Curtis defeated Percy Watson in 8:44.

Maxine ran into Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks backstage. They asked if she lived up to her end of the bargain and Maxine asked where Striker is located. They said they would tell her as soon as they made sure she lived up to her end of the bargain.

Reks and Hawkins left as Kaitlyn and Derrick Bateman showed up. Maxine turned on the waterworks in order to try and get him to help, and he and Kaitlyn decided to assuage their boredom by getting involved… [C]

Ryan's Rant: That match was ok. There were some fun spots, but the story was obviously focused on Maxine and the Striker saga rather than the match's participants and the action in the ring. The stories on NXT continue to be silly, but the participants are so committed to the silliness that it is at least entertaining.

Tamina was shown walking backstage when she ran into Titus O'Neill. O'Neill tried to get back into her good graces with a coconut tree, and Tamina was quickly back to liking him. Darren Young walked up and he was obviously upset with O'Neill's actions. When Tamina left, O'Neill revealed that he wasn't even interested in Tamina, but he just wanted to prove that he was better than Young…

Elsewhere, Bateman and Kaitlyn discussed the good old days before they stumbled upon Striker's holding chambers. Striker freaked out for a bit until he realized he was being saved. Striker was holding Hawkins' cane and he refused to go see a doctor… [C]

Ryan's Rant: I haven't enjoyed the Tamina act since they tried making her more like her father and being completely void of intelligence. She's just no longer a convincing character. Decent work by the rest of the people in this segment, but NXT tends to try and cram too many angles into one short segment.

The Raw Rebound focused on the progressions in the Lesnar/Cena feud…

Hawkins and Reks were arguing backstage until regal approached them and apologized. He ran through all of the regal-isms he used against them in the weeks prior before asking where Striker was. Regal warned them that if anything happened to Striker, there would be severe consequences. Hawkins and Res were mortified to discover Striker had escaped. Maxine and Curtis showed up to gloat about the tables being turned… [C]

A video package covering the Tyson Kidd vs. Michael McGillicutty feud aired…

2. Michael McGillicutty vs. Tyson Kidd. Kidd took control early and kept McGillicutty on the floor, but Kidd flew and McGillicutty caught Kidd in the ring apron before the show went to commercial... [C]

Back from the break, McGillicutty remained in control. Kidd had several hope spots, but McGillicutty managed to maintain his momentum throughout the majority of the match.

Kidd eventually, Kidd caught McGillicutty with a series of kicks and attempted to lock in the Sharpshooter. McGillicutty kicked him off, but Kidd came back with a flying neckbreaker form the top rope for a near fall. Kidd went for a springboard maneuver but McGillicutty dropkicked him out of the air.

McGillicutty went for the McGillicutter but Kidd reversed it into a roll-up. McGillicutty kicked out and nailed Kidd with a Saito suplex. McGillicutty locked in the Sharpshooter on Kidd. Kidd made the ropes.

McGillicutty went for the Fishermen's Suplex but Kidd wrapped McGillicutty up in what looked to be a cross between a Sharpshooter and an armbar; very innovative submission hold that led to the tap out from McGillicutty.

Tyson Kidd defeats Michael McGillicutty in 9:10.

Ryan's Rant: Good match that really kicked things into a high gear in the closing minutes. It was certainly slow to build but the payoff was entertaining and I enjoyed seeing Kidd break out something new. The ties to the Hart family really haven't gotten him over with the crowd, so I hope this is a sign that they're trying something new with him.

Overall this was a decent edition of NXT. If you've watched before and get a kick out of the tomfoolery present in this show, then there is plenty here to enjoy. If not, then I would at least suggest checking out the main event when the show is broken up into individual segments as the work from Kidd and McGillicutty was well done.
