8/12 Powell's ECW Live Coverage: Matt Hardy and Mark Henry face John Morrison vs. The Miz, Tommy Dreamer vs. Colin Delaney in an Extreme Rules match

ECW on The SciFi Network
Taped in Norfolk, Va.
[Q1] The opening video played to kick off the show... Todd Grisham and Matt Striker introduced the show from ringside and hyped the Mark Henry and Matt Hardy vs. John Morrison and The Miz main event...
1. Tommy Dreamer pinned Colin Delaney in an Extreme Rules match in 3:15. Nice work by Tony Chimel, who knows just how to say "extreme rules" and make the fans feel like they're seeing something special. Dreamer brought a shopping cart filled with weapons to ringside.
Delaney didn't want to get in the ring, so the ref just called for the bell to start the match. Dremaer headed to ringside and attacked his former pupil. Dreamer was dominant. Colin tried a second rope leg drop with a stop sign, but Dreamer rolled out of the way. Dreamer DDT'd Colin onto the stop sign and pinned him...
Powell's POV: Delaney hasn't been much fun as a heel. He pretty much just gets his ass kicked and that's about it. I thought there would be more to his character than this. It was fun to watch him get his at first, but now it's just getting repetitive.
Backstage, Lena interviewed Morrison and Miz, which led to a video highlights being shown of their segment last week. Back to Miz and Morrison, they delivered standard mic work, including their "winners and losers" line... [C]
[Q2] [C] Highlights aired from Smackdown of Edge's meltdown on Vickie and his former La Familia stable mates...
2. Evan Bourne beat Bam Neely (w/Chavo Guerrero) in 3:05. Before the match, the announcers explained that Chavo was forcing Neely to work the match despite the "concussion" he suffered when he was attacked by Edge on Friday. Both Chavo and Bam were holding their heads as they walked to the ring.
Chavo continued to sell a head injury throughout the match. At 2:20, Bourne hit a kick to the side of the head and followed up with a standing moonsault for a nearfall. A short time later, Bourne DDT'd Neely and hit the Shooting Star Press for the win...
Powell's POV: Nice work by the announcers during the ECW match. They set up the storyline heel injuries well and put over Bourne's high spots. Well, except when Grisham dished out a dated reference by calling Bourne the Spud Webb of ECW because he's only 5-6 and can dunk a basketball.
Backstage, Teddy Long and Tiffany were discussing business when Armando Estrada entered the office with his contract and asked Teddy to sign. Long signed the contract and then booked him in a match against Finlay for after the break... [C]
[Q3] 3. Finlay (w/Hornswoggle) defeated Armando Estrada in 5:30. Early in the match, Mike Knox walked onto the stage to watch the match. Finlay worked over Armando, but spent a lot of time glaring at Knox. Armando took advantage of the situation momentarily, but Finlay quickly came back quickly and pinned Estrada.
After the match, Finlay motioned for Knox to come to the ring. Knox turned around and walked backstage. Finlay and Hornswoggle brought a kid into the ring and danced with him as Striker said, "We put smiles on people's faces"... [C]
Powell's POV: Either Vince fed Striker that line about the smiles or Striker is doing a good job of saying things Vince wants to hear. By the way, "Lost" is coming to Sci Fi on Sept. 15. If you haven't watched the television series and ignored my many advice to buy the DVDs, now is your chance to start from the beginning and not spend a dime.
WWE is touting that more viewers watch WWE Raw last night than Monday Night Football... Backstage, Ricky Ortiz pitched the idea of a "Ricky O towel" to Teddy Long while Tiffany stood by. Long said Ortiz would face a new wrestler next week on ECW. Ortiz handed Tiffany a towel. She waved it after the left and told Long, "It's fun"...
Powell's POV: I think I got all that right. Once Ricky started pimping the towel, I found myself staring at Tiffany...
Highlights aired from Raw... At ringside, Striker suggested that Ricky Ortiz learn his craft because no one likes an arrogant person. He and Grisham ran through the SummerSlam lineup...
[Q4] Backstage, Matt Hardy told Mark Henry he'd rather team with Lena Yada because at least he wouldn't have to worry about her. Henry said it wouldn't be a situation where they would stay out of each other's ways. "I want you in my way," Henry said... [C]
Powell's POV: Henry is getting so much better on the mic. Nice line about wanting Hardy to be in his way.
4. Matt Hardy and Mark Henry (w/Tony Atlas) defeated John Morrison and The Miz at 8:45. Striker took a rare shot at a heel by asking if there's a men's version of his hat available. Grisham no sold it by asking if that was supposed to be a joke. Henry demanded to start the match and Hardy obliged.
Henry roughed up the heels with some power moves that drew nice reactions from the crowd. Matt entered the ring and helped Henry toss the heels to ringside. The exchanged glances as the show cut to commercial. [C]
[Overrun] Hardy sold for the heels after the break, while Henry kicked the ropes in frustration while waiting for the tag. Hardy came back by hitting a move off the second rope. He made the cover and the referee counted to three even though it appeared Morrison kicked out. "That's it?" Striker asked. "Really?" Awkward finish.
Morrison appeared to be in pain. He rolled out of the ring while Henry roughed up Miz and threw him from the ring. Henry mugged for the crowd and raised his hand while Hardy recovered in the corner. Henry and Atlas raised Hardy's hands. Henry picked up Hardy and hit the World's Strongest Slam. Henry laughed. The announcers recapped the slam to close the show...
Powell's POV: Nice job of building up Henry tonight. He's starting to grow on me as the ECW Champion. Atlas added nothing to his act tonight, nor was was he given a chance to do anything. Solid tag match despite the finish.
