3/1 Kester's WWE Superstars Live Coverage Review: Santino Marella vs. Curt Hawkins, The Great Khali vs. Jinder Mahal, and Beth Phoenix vs. Alicia Fox in a non-title match
Mar 1, 2012 - 03:10 PM

By Ryan Kester

Superstars on WWE.com
Taped earlier in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.

1. Santino Marella defeated Curt Hawkins (w/ Tyler Reks) in 6:58. Santino threatened The Cobra early and Hawkins dove out of the ring.

When Hawkins overcame his fear of snakes he reentered the ring and looked annoyed with Marella's move set. The crowd ate up Marella's antics. Santino eventually settled into some great chain wrestling and had Hawkins in several pinning positions.

Hawkins managed to gain control by tossing Marella to the floor as the show went to break... [C]

Back from the break, Hawkins was firmly in control. Hawkins mocked Marella as he began to work through his move set. Hawkins hit a tilt-o-whirl body slam for a near fall. Hawkins locked in a rest hold.

Marella eventually battled back and started his comedy set, but Hawkins cut him short with a running forearm. Marella surprised Hawkins with a jackknife rollup and scored the clean pin… [C]

Ryan's Rant: We see so much of comedy Marella with him jobbing to the stars that it becomes easy to forget just how good he can be in the ring. He got to show a lot of that here, so this made for a fun match.

Scott Stanford set up the video package covering Undertaker's WrestleMania Streak that aired on Monday Night Raw.

Alicia Fox made her entrance for her match… [C]

2. Beth Phoenix defeated Alicia Fox in a non-title match in 2:36. Phoenix slammed Fox quickly and set up for the Glam Slam, but Fox managed to fight her off.

Phoenix cut of Fox's momentum and slammed her via her hair a couple of times. Phoenix locked in a rest hold. Fox managed to make a comeback and she hit Phoenix with a series of kicks and a springboard back elbow.

Fox set up for her scissors kick and missed, and Phoenix hit the Clam Slam for the pinfall victory.

Ryan's Rant: The Kharma hints just keep coming from the various announce teams that call Phoenix' matches. At this point, I'm just waiting for that to happen. The match was ok, but the outcome was never in questions, which kind of kills my ability to invest in what's going on.

3. The Great Khali defeated Jinder Mahal in 2:35. Mahal went right after Khali, but he quickly ran into a chop. Khali followed with a series of chest slaps in the corner.

Khali hit a headbutt before clotheslining Mahal to the floor. Mahal charged back and hit a DDT for a near fall. Mahal focused his offense on Khali's neck and worked him over with a series of stomps. A Khali chant broke out and the big man responded with a series of clubbing clotheslines.

Khali hit another chop and pinned Mahal… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Well, that certainly happened. Khali isn't for me, but if you're a fan then this was what you would expect from one of his matches. There's just nothing there I can really get excited over.

The remainder of the show featured the Raw Rebound, which covered John Cena confronting The Rock in the main event segment.

Ryan's Rant:It's WrestleMania time, folks, so plentiful video packages abound on WWE Superstars. That's not necessarily a complaint, but there certainly wasn't any jaw-dropping wrestling on this show. I can't really recommend going out of your way to view this edition of Superstars, but if you've managed to miss WWE's latest important video packages and wouldn't mind a little bit of wrestling action to accompany them, then this is for you.

I will say this, when they parcel the show out on YouTube, look up the Santino Marella vs. Curt Hawkins match. If you've never seen Santino do anything other than his comedy act, it's a bit refreshing to see his actual wrestling skill shine through a bit. Thanks for reading; take care.
