2/29 Kester's WWE NXT Live Coverage Review: Alex Riley and Percy Watson vs. Titus O'Neil and Darren Young, Tyson Kidd vs. Michael McGillicutty, and Kaitlyn vs. Maxine
Feb 29, 2012 - 07:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

NXT on WWE.com
Taped earlier in Seattle, Washington.

1. Titus O'Neil and Darren Young defeated Alex Riley and Percy Watson in 5:35. O'Neill and Riley started the match, but Young quickly tagged in and took control of Riley. Riley battled back briefly, but Young caught him with a neckbreaker before tagging O'Neill back into the match.

The heels continued to work over Riley and utilized quick tags to keep Riley on their side of the ring. Eventually, Riley got the hot tag to Watson, who entered the ring for the first time and ran through his move set on Young.

Watson hit the Showtime Splash for a near fall, but became distracted by O'Neill trying to enter the ring. That distraction was all it took for Darren Young to hit the Gut Check and pick up the pinfall victory.

After the match, O'Neill grabbed a mic and told Percy "You see, Percy, what we have here is a failure to communicate." Cute. O'Neill told Watson that next week Watson would get a rematch and O'Neill would make Watson be like every member of the WWE Universe, a loser… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Good, quick tag match that was followed by a simple but effective promo by O'Neill.

Back from the break, Alicia Fox, Kaitlyn, and Justin Gabriel were sitting in chairs in the middle of the ring. Derrick Bateman came out for his match, and all three wrestlers stood, and there was a fourth chair present for Bateman.

Kaitlyn told Bateman that he was now in the trust tree and this was a safe place, Gabriel told Bateman he doesn’t have a match tonight and Kaitlyn told Bateman that this was an intervention. Alicia Fox and Gabriel talked about how they were there to remind Gabriel of when he was single and that he is dating a demon.

Bateman responded angrily, but Kaitlyn set up a video package chronicling Bateman being a tool. Kaitlyn asked Bateman if those were signs of a healthy relationship. Bateman said Maxine was ok at home and he didn't want to die alone, so he was in love. Kaitlyn mocked this idea and told Bateman that Maxine is using him.

Bateman asked Kaitlyn what love is, so she made out with him. Maxine ran out from the back and made a beeline for the ring. She attacked Kaitlyn and the two had to be pulled apart from one another. Maxine left up the ramp while fuming…

Backstage, Tyson Kidd was talking to Natalya. Michael McGillicutty showed up and told Kidd that the only reason why a Hart would talk to him is because they feel sorry for him… [C]

Ryan's Rant: The intervention segment was different. It wasn't bad, but it was pretty unexpected and felt quite a bit random. Still, it set up the Kaitlyn vs. Maxine match for later well.

2. Michael McGillicutty defeated Tyson Kidd in 6:17. The two worked some chain wrestling to start, and the two traded control several times. Kidd started gaining some momentum with his flashy move set, but McGillicutty managed to drop Kidd crotch-first on the ropes.

McGillicutty started working over Kidd with a series of slams and the most dramatic chinlock that you ever did see. Tyson fought out of said chinlock and the two tried to clothesline each other.

Kidd made it back to his feet first and he worked over McGillicutty with a series of kicks. Kidd went to the top rope but McGillicutty cut him off. McGillicutty went for a superplex but Kidd knocked him to the mat. Kidd followed with a corkscrew moonsault for a near fall.

Kidd attempted to apply the Sharpshooter, but McGillicutty kicked him off. McGillicutty hit the McGillicutter and scored the clean pinfall… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Good match between Kidd and McGillicutty, McGillicutty's face during his chinlock was so cartoonish it was comedic, but the rest of the match was well done.

The Raw Rebound recapped the Rock and Cena closing promo that closed Monday's show… [C]

Matt Striker announced that tonight is the one year anniversary of NXT Redemption. He ran through the various personnel swaps the show has seen and he said there's only been one host, which is a lie. He got emotional and said that the reason he has the job he has, is that he loves this stuff. Striker said he has a passion for the WWE like the fans do. He said that this show existed to give some young guys some exposure.

He said NXT was supposed to be about change, but it hasn't been as of late. Striker said he messed up, but tonight that was going to end. He said he wanted to announce something, but he was instantly interrupted by Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks.

Hawkins was still rocking his Obama ripoff shirt and he and Reks bantered back and forth about how they could make the show better. They returned to the back and Striker tried to make his announcement again.

Reks and Hawkins returned with lawn chairs, drinks, and popcorn. Reks whipped out his camera phone to record the special occasion. Hawkins said that he couldn't wait for Striker to announce that he had to give his job to someone younger, better looking, and well, he was interrupted by Striker telling him to shut up.

Striker said he's still going to be NXT's host and he wasn't going anywhere, but he said Reks and Hawkins were right. The show needed veteran leadership. Striker said he doesn’t have the years of wisdom and experience that the other general managers have, but he found someone that does. He said the veteran he's thinking of has the respect of the WWE fans, the guys in the back, and his own.

Striker said the guy he found has paved the way so pieces of trash like Reks and Hawkins can call themselves wrestlers. Striker said they were not. Striker said the new sheriff in town is Sir William Regal.

Regal joined Striker in the ring. Regal thanked Striker and told Reks and Hawkins that he looks forward to pushing everyone to their limits and he asked the pair why they wear sunglasses inside. He digressed and told the pair that the new NXT has just begun. He thanked them and his music rang through the arena. Reks and Hawkins were not pleased… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Excellent work from everyone involved. Striker, especially, showed a real connection to his promo when he normally comes off quite stale and robotic. This was very well done.

Johnny Curtis and Derrick Bateman joined the announce team for the following match.

3. Kaitlyn defeated Maxine in 3:19. Maxine tackled Kaitlyn instantly , but Kaitlyn quickly gained control and locked in a body scissors. Maxine managed to get out of the hold and she blasted Kaitlyn with a kick.

Kaitlyn didn't appreciate that, so she it Maxine with a backbreaker. Maxine responded with a double axe-handle before locking in a rest hold. Kaitlyn fought out, hit a full nelson bomb, and rolled Maxine into a pin and picked up the 1-2-3.

Maxine retrieved a microphone and she started shamelessly flirting with Regal while the crowd chanted "hoeski." Damn you, Cena, for making that a thing.

Maxine left up the ramp and Bateman looked upset as the show went off the air.

Ryan's Rant: Kaitlyn and Maxine had a good back and forth exchange. At the end of the match I felt like I was left wanting a bit more, which is more than I can say about most of the matches form WWE's women's division. Overall, this was a pretty entertaining edition of NXT. There wasn't really anything that I would classify as must-see, but if you have some time to kill and want to see some decent wrestling mixed with better-than-average sports entertainment, then look no further.
