8/5 Twilling's ECW Live Coverage: The Dirt Sheet debuts on national TV with guests Mark Henry and Matt Hardy, Tommy Dreamer vs. Armando Estrada
By Rich Twilling Aug 5, 2008 - 10:01 PM

ECW on The SciFi Network
Taped 8/5/08 from Atlanta, GA

[Q1] The opening video immediately aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Todd Grisham welcomed us to the show and introduced us to Tazz’s replacement for the night, Matt Striker. Striker said he did not take up as much space as Tazz but he is camera friendly and wrestling nerd…

Twill’s Two Cents: Without speculating on where Tazz is, I think Striker would be a great color commentator.

1. Evan Bourne and Ricky Ortiz defeated Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely in 5:01. Striker mentioned Bam Neely being from Robbinsdale, Minnesota, the hometown of Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, and others. Bourne hit some impressive quick offense before locking in a Fujiwara armbar.

Chavo and Bam isolated Ortiz by utilizing multiple tags. Evan received a hot tag and hit a double knee drop from the top rope to a standing Bam Neely. Neely charged at Bourne but Bourne sidestepped him and rolled him up, using his body, for the win…

Twill’s Two Cents: This was all Bourne. He was fantastic again. Speaking of fantastic, Striker is a natural. He is great so far. He even admitted to losing to Bourne and put him over.

Striker plugged the Dirt Sheet for later in the show… [C]

[Q2] Footage was shown of Mike Knox laying out Finlay last week. Knox said he was here to expose the fraud that is Finlay. He rolled footage of Finlay and Hornswoggle dancing around in the Summerslam promo. Knox said it was okay to laugh, which I was doing. He called Finlay a fraud.

Finlay came out to the ring with Hornswoggle. Finlay said the clip was funny but he was the same guy. He loved to have fun and he loved his family. He invited Knox to take a shot at him. He warned Knox to knock him out or he would find out whether or not he has gone soft. Knox walked away…

Twill’s Two Cents: Good promo by both men and I am glad Finlay gained some of his toughness back tonight.

The Raw Rebound replayed the events leading up to and through Batista and John Cena winning the tag team titles… [C]

2. Armando Estrada defeated Tommy Dreamer to earn an ECW contract in 2:31. Estrada bounced around like a pinball for the first couple of minutes. Dreamer put Armando into the tree of woe. Colin Delaney interfered and the distraction allowed Armando to roll up Dreamer for the win…

Twill’s Two Cents: That was predictable.

[Q3] Grisham once again plugged the Dirt Sheet. Mark Henry and Matt Hardy will be the guests of Miz and Morrison… [C]

Backstage, Armando was approached by Colin Delaney. Armando asked Colin why he would ever help him after all the hoops he made Colin jump through. Colin said at least Armando gave him a shot. Teddy Long came in and told Delaney he would be facing Dreamer in an Extreme Rules Match next week. Colin looked concerned and Armando took off…

Twill’s Two Cents: It is nice to see creative remembering things from weeks past.

Not to outdone by Raw, a Smackdown Rebound aired, thoroughly showcasing the beating that Edge gave Mick Foley. This led into a Summerslam rundown by the announcers. Noteworthy in the match graphics was they put pictures of the tag titles on Cena and Batista…

Braden Walker made his way through the backstage area in preparation for his ring entrance… [C]

[Q4] 3. Braden Walker defeated James Curtis in 2:55. Braden received absolutely no reaction. In fact, he received the opposite of a reaction. He stopped at the top of the ramp and put his hands on his hips, probably wondering why he left TNA. After some back and forth action, Walker won the match with a fisherman’s suplex…

Twill’s Two Cents: I think they are pushing the wrong guy here. Walker tried but he is running backwards.

The Dirt Sheet is coming up next… [C]

Miz and Morrison sat in the middle of the ring for the broadcast debut of The Dirt Sheet. They put pictures of Henry and Atlas up on the Titantron and replaced their mouths with someone else’s, like Conan O’Brien does. “Henry” sounded like Chewbacca. “Atlas” did a little rap and both Miz and Morrison said they did not understand a word Atlas said. Miz said no one understands what Atlas says.

[Overrun] Henry and Atlas came to the ring. They were pissed but Miz and Morrison quickly calmed them down. They put “Matt Hardy” on the stage and mocked him too. Henry actually cut a promo on the fake Hardy before the real Hardy came out.

Hardy made fun of Miz and Morrison. Hardy attacked Miz and Hardy accidentally hit Morrison. Henry and Hardy cleared the ring of the show hosts. They stared each other down as the show went off the air…

Twill’s Two Cents: Fun segment. I liked it. It sold the title match on the C show. What more can you ask for?
