8/2 Twilling's WWE Saturday Night's Main Event Coverage: Edge vs. Jeff Hardy, John Cena, Batista, and Cryme Tyme vs. JBL, Kane, Dibiase, and Rhodes, Jenny McCarthy appears
By Rich Twilling Aug 2, 2008 - 11:59 PM

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on the NBC Network
Taped 7/28/08 in Washington, D.C.

[Q1] A cool Saturday Night’s Main Event opening video aired. JBL’s music started playing as Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler welcomed us to the show. C.M. Punk was also at the announce booth. He said he watched the show as a child…

Twill’s Two Cents: It would be cool if they paid homage to the classic shows by using the old theme music and opening.

The order of the ring entrances was mixed. Cryme Tyme came out after JBL, followed by Dibiase and Rhodes, Cena, Kane, and Batista…

1. Kane, JBL, Ted Dibiase, and Cody Rhodes defeated Batista, John Cena, and Cryme Tyme in 12:07. Batista and Kane led things off for their respective teams. Rhodes tagged in but Cryme Tyme was able to double team him. Shad scored a nearfall on Rhodes with a military press. Kane tagged in and closelined Shad to take control of the match… [C]

Shad remained in the ring with JBL working him over coming back from commercial. Dibiase came in and looked impressive. JR plugged a bunch of NBC shows so he got that out of the way early. Shad tried to get to his corner but was met by a nice standing drop kick by Cody.

[Q2] JBL tagged in and hit about thirty elbows for a two count. Cena received the hot tag and hit a bunch of moves on JBL, including the five knuckle shuffle. He had him up for the FU but Kane hit him with a big boot. Everyone entered the ring and eliminated each other. JBL hit the Closeline from Hell on JTG for the win…

After the match, JBL eyeballed C.M. Punk, who put over the Closeline from Hell but not the way JBL hit it from behind…

Twill’s Two Cents: Solid eight man tag. I am not sure why they could not have given Batista the win in his hometown, but nonetheless, everyone was able to show a little something to the network audience.

The Great Khali and Ranjin Singh made their way through the backstage area…

Jeff Foxworthy cut a promo in support of Jenny McCarthy and Generation Rescue… [C]

Carmen Electra gave her heartfelt comments in support of Generation Rescue…

2. The Great Khali (with Ranjin Singh) defeated Jimmy Wang Yang in 1:27. They showed a video package of Khali during his entrance. JR said Khali is just as famous in India as Yao Ming is in China. Actually, that is probably true. Khali hit the double chokeslam for the quick victory…

Twill’s Two Cents: This was successful in getting Khali over in preparation for his title match at Summerslam.

Ben Stiller was next in line to give his promo. JR plugged Jenny McCarthy’s appearance after the commercial break… [C]

[Q3] A Raw preview aired promoting a World Tag Team Championship match with Rhodes and Dibiase vs. Cena and Batista…

Jenny McCarthy was introduced and she came out to the stage. She gave a brief promo about Generation Rescue and did a fantastic job. She also looked absolutely stunning. If you are able to and this affects you in some way, please donate…

Twill’s Two Cents: That was well done. It was short but very meaningful.

A video package of the Edge and Vickie Guerrero saga aired. After the video, King plugged the Edge vs. Jeff Hardy match, coming up after the break… [C]

JR and King ran down the Summerslam card. They are using the marquee theme; similar to Wrestlemania 21…

3. Edge defeated Jeff Hardy in 13:26. They edited in some Smackdown footage from last night since this show was taped before Smackdown. JR sold Edge’s beating of Mick Foley as absolutely despicable. Hardy’s music has grown on me a lot and I actually prefer it to his old them now.

[Q4] In a cool spot, Edge irish whipped Hardy but Hardy slid to the floor. Edge followed him but Hardy simultaneously came back into the ring and hit a dropkick to Edge through the ropes. Hardy tried a running somersault plancha onto Edge on the floor and missed. Dangerous… [C]

Edge locked in a submission hold on the injured left leg of Hardy. Hardy tried the reverse mule kick but Edge swatted him away. Hardy fought back and crotched Edge in the corner. He pulled him down in the tree of woe. Hardy missed a running dropkick but hit the delayed dropkick for a two count.

Hardy went for the Twist of Fate but Edge countered it into the Impaler DDT (they really need to change name of that). Hardy sidestepped a spear and hit the Whisper in the Wind for a long two count. Hardy went up for the Swanton Bomb. Edge rolled away and Hardy came back into the ring. Edge went for a spear but Hardy leapfrogged him, causing Edge to fly to the floor.

With Hardy recuperating on the apron, MVP came out of nowhere and nailed Hardy with the running kick. Edge made his way back into the ring and hit the spear for the win. After the match, Edge walked away triumphantly…

Twill’s Two Cents: This is not Hulk Hogan’s Saturday Night’s Main Event. I enjoyed the show although it was not a good night for the faces. Edge and Hardy looked like stars and had a very good match. I was surprised that not one world champion was in action though.

I prefer the 90 minute format in place of Saturday Night Live, but this was a solid show. Let me know what you thought by emailing me at dotnetrich@gmail.com.

What did you think of WWE's Jeff Hardy "unconscious in a stairwell" storyline?
It was a brilliant final hook for the pay-per-view.
It was a turnoff, but it's par for the course with WWE.
It was one of the sleaziest stunts the company has ever done.
