1/19 Kester's WWE Superstars Live Coverage Review: Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins vs. Santino Marella and Mason Ryan, Alex Riley vs. Jinder Mahal, and Natalya vs. Tamina
Jan 19, 2012 - 03:20 PM

By Ryan Kester

Superstars on WWE.com
Taped earlier in Anaheim, California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

1. Tamina defeated Natalya in 5:20. Tamina dominated in the early going, but Natalya managed to trip Tamina into the corner. Natalya went to work targeting Tamina's lower back and midsection. Natalya locked in an abdominal stretch.

Natalya locked in her new submission hold but let go after a while to smash Tamina's face into the mat. Tamina started fighting back and she blasted Natalya with a chop. Natalya tried to surprise Tamina with a Sharpshooter attempt, but Tamina reversed it with a roll-up for a near fall.

Tamina hit her Samoan Drop and ascended the ropes. Natalya cut her off but Tamina managed to battle back and shove Natalya to the canvas. Tamina followed with her Superfly Splash for the pinfall victory… [C]

Ryan's Rant: This match was a surprise for me. It didn't last very long but the women worked a much quicker pace than their recent encounters on Smackdown and it was much more of a back-and-forth contest than the squash Tamina got on Natalya. Brief match, but very entertaining. If these two continue to feud, I hope that they stick to this style because it worked.

The announcers sent us to a lengthy recap of Daniel Bryan and The Big Show's match from Smackdown and the angle involving The Big Show accidentally running over AJ. They then hyped Daniel Bryan's World Heavyweight Championship defense against Mark Henry for this Friday's Smackdown… [C]

2. Santino Marella and Mason Ryan defeated Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks in 6:37. Ryan dominated both heels in turn at the beginning of the match. He then tagged in Santino, who worked some of his comedy set.

Santino prepared for the Cobra, but Reks dove out of the ring. Hawkins tried to run in and attack Santino, but Ryan got in the ring and threw him to the floor. The heels regrouped on the floor while the show went to a break… [C]

Back from commercial, Reks and Hawkins worked quick tags and did their best to keep Santino on their side of the ring. Santino eventually managed to hit his split stunner on Hawkins and that gave him enough time to get the hot tag to Ryan.

Ryan stormed the ring and locked Hawkins in a full nelson. Reks got in the ring but Ryan threw Hawkins right into him, and Reks fell to the floor. Hawkins sold the effects of the full nelson while Ryan tagged in Santino, who hit the Cobra for the win… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Not my favorite match in recent Superstars history. Look, I understand Santino's role and I can appreciate him at points, but I highly disagree with WWE having him use the Cobra on young guys that are struggling to connect with the fans. Hawkins and Reks have a lot of upside as a heel tag team and any heat they gain with competitive matches on other shows gets taken away from them the moment they have to sell a comedy spot.

The Raw Rebound focused on the main event and CM Punk's and John Laurinaitis' promos... [C]

3. Jinder Mahal defeated Alex Riley in 3:20. Riley went on an early offensive flurry, but Mahal quickly took control and choked the breath out of Riley.

Mahal locked in a rest hold and Riley struggled to fight out. Riley was eventually successful, and he started working through his offense. Riley hit a spinebuster and set up for the Final Score.

Mahal countered with a Michinoku Driver and then locked in the Camel Clutch for the submission victory.

Ryan's Rant: What we got was decent, but the match was really too short for me to really sink my teeth in. Jinder Mahal seemed to pull some new tricks with his move set and Riley did a really good job of selling the Camel Clutch at the end of the match. My lukewarm response has more to do with WWE providing me with very little reason to invest in either guy. This was essentially one jobber defeating another jobber, and I just felt like it accomplished very little.

Overall, I would call this a skippable edition of Superstars. The Diva's match was a fun surprise, but the show became bogged down by long recap videos and the tag match and main event did very little for me.
