WWE Raw on the USA Network
Live 7/28/08 from Washington, D.C.
[Q1] A video aired from last week with Batista booking himself to face C.M. Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship. Focus was placed on the confrontation between John Cena and Batista after the match…
The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler welcomed us to the sold out show. John Cena came to ring sporting a new soccer style red shirt with a yellow logo. Cena said he was not perfect and that he made a mistake last week when he socked Dave Batista in the mouth.
He welcomed Batista to come out and settle the consequences. Batista, the hometown favorite, came out wearing a Wes Unseld Washington Bullets jersey. Batista said he watched the footage and knew Cena did not mean to hit him, so they were cool. Batista said he liked and respected Cena. He said when he won the title from Punk at Summerslam, his first defense would be against Cena.
Cena said Batista already received two shots. He said a lot of people deserve title shots and Batista is not next in line. Batista said he should be champion now but people keep interfering in his matches. Batista said Punk could not beat him and either could Cena. Cena asked Batista if it felt good to be home. Batista smiled.
Cena said he and Batista should be headlining Wrestlemania, but Wrestlemania should take place tonight. Batista was about to agree to the match when Shane McMahon’s music hit and he danced his way onto the stage. He immediately said he and Stephanie appointed a new General Manager and that person would be introduced later in the show.
He said the new G.M. had made plans for tonight’s show. C.M. Punk would be facing “one of the most technically sound free agents in our business today.” He then put Cena and Batista in a tag team match against Kane and JBL… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Shane went out of his way to not say “he” or “she” when referring to the General Manager. I am intrigued as to who will face Punk. Good segment and I am glad Shane came out and made his point quickly.
[Q2] The slam of the week featured D-Lo Brown defeating Santino Marella and the love connection that took place afterward with Santino and Beth Phoenix…
Kelly Kelly made her entrance and some guy wearing a Cena padlock around his neck was shown clapping for him…
1. Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix defeated D-Lo Brown and Kelly Kelly in 2:03. Was D-Lo announced at 216 pounds? I don’t think so. Backstage, Santino told Beth he was not a piece of meat. Beth said there was nothing between them and their relationship was strictly professional…
Cole said it was an intergender match and not a mixed tag, so the men could face the women. Santino tried to pick up D-Lo in a fireman’s carry but could not do it, so Beth tagged in and did it herself. Santino tagged in to face Kelly. He knocked D-Lo off the apron and rolled Kelly up for the win…
After the match, Santino and Beth shook hands. They stuck around and teased kissing each other again. Santino started to leave but Beth violently pulled him back and laid a big kiss on him… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Welcome back D-Lo. I like this Santino and Beth relationship, but what is the next step?
[Q3] Jeff Foxworthy cut a promo in support of Generation Rescue, Jenny McCarthy, and the fight against autism…
Backstage, a shot of a Vince McMahon photograph was shown to next to no reaction. JBL came in and approached Shane McMahon. JBL said he, and not Cena or Batista, deserved the next title shot. Shane told JBL to take it up with the new General Manager. Shane’s phone rang, with his music as the ring tone, and it was the G.M. Shane took off as JBL lobbied for his match to be changed…
Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Jerry Lawler were set to challenge for the tag team championships. A referee ran to the ring and handed a note to Lillian Garcia. She read it and it said that Michael Cole, not Jim Duggan, would be King’s tag team partner… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Jason Powell and I are next in line for a title shot. JBL wanted to talk to “him” when referring to the General Manager. Maybe it won’t be Regal after all.
2. Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes defeated Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole to retain the World Tag Team Championships in 3:54. Cole acted like he did not know the rules of the match. King worked on both opponents and the referee screamed at everybody. Cody missed a middle rope move, allowing King to gain the advantage.
Michael Cole accidentally tagged in when he was checking on his partner. The referee called the tag like a goon because Cody told him to. Cole landed a right hand on Rhodes but that was short lived. Cody slugged Cole in the stomach and scored the pinfall for his team…
Twill’s Two Cents: Ted Dibiase? Could he be the new General Manager? Geez, I know Cole is an announcer and all, but he is a wuss.
[Q4] After the match, King and other officials checked on Cole, who remained down inside the ring.
Oh shit. Mike Adamle welcomed us back to the show. The attack was premeditated because Adamle said he was told to be on the show last week…
Jamie Noble and Layla stood in the middle of the ring. Noble said the new General Manager needed to know that he was the rising star on Raw. He called Layla his part time girlfriend associate type. He said he would be the next Intercontinental Champion and called out “Coffee” Kingston…
3. Kofi Kingston defeated Jamie Noble (with Layla) to retain the Intercontinental Championship in 1:29. This was basically a squash match. Adamle referred to a dropkick as a “double leg dropkick.” Of course, that is different from a plain old one legged dropkick.
C.M. Punk made his way through the backstage area as Adamle wondered who his opponent would be… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Vince is just determined to get Adamle on Raw.
Did you know? Raw was the most watched show last Monday on cable television…
JBL joined the announce booth and told Adamle to shut his pie hole. He said the Hall of Famer and future Hall of Famer should call the upcoming match…
[Q5] 4. C.M. Punk defeated William Regal in a non-title match in 5:20. Regal wore a boy band looking vest while he wrestled. King said he thought Regal may have been the new General Manager. Regal and Punk wrestled on the mat for the first minute. Regal went to the floor and kicked Punk’s head into the post. Punk looked like he was bleeding the hard way.
Regal locked in a full nelson and yes, he probably has a broken nose. Snitsky is probably smiling backstage. Regal continued to work on the head and neck of Punk. Punk hit a series of Muay Thai strikes to take the advantage. After a Regal suplex, Punk hit the GTS for the win…
Twill’s Two Cents: Good match and Punk looked nasty. It is good to see Regal back and it looks like he could be headed to another show because of the free agent talk.
JBL entered the ring but Kane’s music immediately hit and he came out as well. Ladies and gentlemen, here is your Summerslam championship match. Kane hit JBL. Punk hit Kane. JBL knocked out Punk with a big boot. Kane and JBL stared at each other. Adamle said Punk did not deserve that from JBL because he was standing up for him against Kane. Ugh… [C]
Chris Jericho, in a suit, and Lance Cade came out for the Highlight Reel, perhaps the last one. The busted up Jeritron 6000 was hanging in the ring. Jericho said he continued to tell the truth and continued to be ostracized. He said he grew up, unlike the fans.
[Q6] Jericho said he used to do what the fans wanted him to do. He said that despite being the first Undisputed Champion, he decided instead to host his own talk show. He said he would never settle for second best again and tonight would be the final Highlight Reel.
He said he ended the career of a man and he introduced a video of that man. It was not HBK, it was Y2J. A video of a few Y2J antics over the years was shown, including a couple involving Stephanie McMahon. Jericho said it never mattered what he did, the fans never respected him the way they respected Michaels.
Jericho said the highlights of what he has done to Michaels mean more to him than the rest of his career combined. He said he did to each and every fan what he did to Michaels. Lance Cade took the mic and told Jericho that he appreciated him. He said that unlike Shawn, Jericho saved him. Jericho thanked Cade.
He finished up by saying he was not sure if Shawn could see him, but he could hear him. He told Shawn to stay home, hold his wife and children, and embrace his life away from the wrestling business. He called himself the most dangerous man in WWE and that he deserved a title match against C.M. Punk at Summerslam… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Another homerun by Jericho. I loved the way he explained why tonight was the final Highlight Reel. I could have done without the Cade bit, but the rest of it was fantastic. Jericho vs. Punk? I would rather see that than Punk vs. anyone else.
Piers Morgan (America’s Got Talent) cut a promo for Generation Rescue as well…
The Oklahoma fight song was blaring throughout the arena and Jim Ross joined the announce booth. Yes, he joined the announce booth, so Adamle is still there…
5. Mickie James defeated Jillian in a non-title match in 2:35. We have a huge Mickie James fan on our Dot Net Member’s Forum and he is probably convulsing right now. She looks hot. Jillian scored a nearfall after hitting a flipping neckbreaker.
[Q7] JR continued to verbally tear Adamle a new one. Adamle asked Ross if he was trying to take over. Hopefully he does. Mickie hit the tornado DDT for the win...
Mickie went to hug her dad and was attacked by Katie Lea. On her way back up the ramp, she was met by Paul Burchill. Katie said she did that for the new G.M. She called herself the next Women’s Champion and Paul the next Intercontinental Champion…
Twill’s Two Cents: The match was short but pretty good. The post match attack was solid too. Good segment. JR is fantastic in his smartass role tonight.
The Smackdown Rebound aired. Vickie Guerrero reinstated The Undertaker to face Edge at Summerslam…
Backstage, Todd Grisham asked Shane McMahon who the new G.M. was. Shane said it could be a she. He told Todd the new G.M. is already at the show and that Todd would find out when everyone else did… [C]
JR and King ran down the Summerslam card thus far. JR plugged Saturday Night’s Main Event and Jenny McCarthy. Adamle started to talk as the footage played. A lot of big celebrities wished Jenny luck…
Cena and Cryme Tyme were talking backstage. Cryme Tyme told Cena they had his back and that Batista would earn a title shot with a pinfall tonight. Batista came into the picture. Cena asked Cryme Tyme if they could be alone. “CTC, one team, one dream,” is their catchphrase. Here come the t-shirts!
[Q8] Batista said he did not trust Cena and that Cena did not trust him. Cena agreed. Cena told Batista to go to the ring and that he would follow. Batista said the same. Cena reluctantly walked by and to the gorilla position… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: JR is there; why is Adamle?
King plugged a live interview with Shawn Michaels next week on Raw. I smell a similar promo to that of six years ago when Michaels returned to face Triple H at Summerslam that year…
Adamle said he did not know why JBL showed disdain for him because he buys boxes of Mamajuana, which doesn’t work. JBL and Kane made their entrance. Adamle wondered why they were not getting along since they were partners…
Twill’s Two Cents: Adamle obviously does not watch the show or follow the product. Pathetic. Oh, Mike, JBL has disdain for you because you suck.
6. John Cena and Batista defeated JBL and Kane in 12:17. JR said the New York Parking Lot Brawl was still being discussed at the water cooler. I know Chris and I are not talking about it at the Dot Net Water Cooler. Cena and Batista cleared the ring. They then stared at each other… [C]
Coming back from the break, WWE announced two matches for Saturday Night’s Main Event. John Cena, Batista, and Cryme Tyme vs. JBL, Kane, Ted Dibiase, and Cody Rhodes; and Edge vs. Jeff Hardy were both promoted for the show…
[Overrun] JBL and Kane worked on Cena in their corner. Luckily for the fans, JR took over the broadcast. Cena mounted a brief comeback but Kane hit a side suplex for a nearfall. Kane missed the top rope closeline and Cena hit a DDT (sort of).
Batista and JBL received tags at the same time. Batista cleaned house. JBL irish whipped Batista into the ropes and Kane pulled down the top rope, causing Batista to crash to the floor. JBL and Kane worked on Batista’s ribs. JBL beat Batista down in the corner with multiple right hands.
JBL went for the Closeline from Hell but Batista countered with a spear. JBL either hit Kane or tagged him hard. Kane attacked JBL. Cena tagged himself in and hit the FU on Kane for the win…
After the match, Shane McMahon came out and announced Mike Adamle as the new General Manager. Everyone had a “What the f*ck?” look on their face. Adamle made a Cena vs. Batista match for Summerslam and wished both men luck…
Twill’s Two Cents: I am loving this! He put Michael Cole in the match because he was sick of being made fun of. No more Mr. Nice Guy. Adamle is terrible as the play by play guy, but this could be interesting.
I enjoyed the show. What did you think? As always, shoot me an email to dotnetrich@gmail.com to let me know.
