7/25 Twilling's West Coast WWE Smackdown Coverage: Battle Royal to determine Triple H's Summerslam opponent, Vickie Guerrero has a huge surprise for Edge
By Rich Twilling Jul 25, 2008 - 10:00 PM

WWE Smackdown on The CW Network
Taped 7/22/08 in Philadelphia, PA

[Q1] Footage aired of Edge and Vickie Guerrero’s wedding reception, followed by Triple H spoiling the festivities by showing the hidden camera vide of Edge cheating with Alicia Fox…

The opening video aired; Jim Ross and Mick Foley welcomed everyone to the show. They said Vickie Guerrero would arrive later in the show and wondered what kind of physical and emotional state she would be in…

MVP stood in the middle of VIP Lounge. He ran down the title resume of Jeff Hardy and introduced him as his guest. A guard opened up a set of velvet ropes to let Hardy in. Great stuff. MVP announced tonight’s main event; a battle royal for a WWE Championship match at Summerslam, including Hardy, Big Show, Umaga, The Great Khali, Mr. Kennedy, and MVP…

MVP pointed out Jeff Hardy being on the cover of the current WWE Magazine. He told Hardy he is not known for being WWE Champion but instead, is known for being a risk taker. He said taking those risks have resulted in some big failures. Hardy said he has made mistakes and was suspended for sixty days. He said he missed Wrestlemania for it and that the fans appreciated his candid honesty.

Hardy was given a verbal beating by MVP. MVP referred to Hardy’s house being burnt to the ground. Hardy’s dog, Jack, passed away in the fire and MVP told Hardy that his careless decisions and immature behavior was the cause of Jack’s death. Hardy called MVP a jerk and asked if he was also a psychiatrist.

[Q2] Hardy said he would never get his third strike because if he did, he would be released. He told MVP that he, better than anyone, should know about getting second chances, although he did not refer specifically to his jail time. Hardy finally had enough and shoved MVP, who retreated to the floor and up the ramp… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Fantastic. That segment was as good as it gets. Give credit to Hardy for allowing all of those personal things to be verbalized on TV. Also, for him to refer very specifically to his sixty day suspension and possibly being released, was both impressive and very interesting. Great, great segment.

I guess one of the overwhelming themes of the night is going to be the impending arrival of Vickie Guerrero. Shelton Benjamin made his way to the ring. He gave a decent promo but he sounds ridiculous when he screams, “Ain’t no stoppin’ me nowwwwww.”…

1. Shelton Benjamin defeated Jimmy Wang Yang in a non-title match in 2:17. Solid match given the short length. Shelton finally named his finisher; it is called “Paydirt.”…

Backstage, a contrite Edge ran into the new WWE tag team champions, Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder. He was proud of his “kids.” He tried to explain what happened with Vickie but they were not real interested in hearing it… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Good backstage segment. Ryder and Hawkins were good here.

[Q3] Footage from the Great American Bash of Hawkins and Ryder winning the tag titles was shown…

2. Festus (with Jesse) defeated Curt Hawkins (with Zack Ryder) in 2:15. Festus won the match with his flapjack. The champs attacked and laid out Festus after the match…

Twill’s Two Cents: If not for that post match attack, that would have been a terrible way to book the new champions.

They aired the video of Jenny McCarthy’s Generation Rescue. I think their appearance on Saturday Night’s Main Event will be great to spread the word… [C]

Edge spoke to Alicia Fox backstage and told her she needed to blend in better. Bam Neely eavesdropped in the background, unbeknownst to Edge and Alicia. He told her to meet him later since Vickie would be arriving soon…

[Q4] 3. Vladimir Kozlov defeated Stevie Richards in 3:29. Richards received a very nice hometown pop. The announcers put over Kozlov’s past and knowledge of many fighting styles. Richards scored some obligatory offense but Kozlov finished him off with the battering ram…

Twill’s Two Cents: This guy continues to impress and I look forward to seeing who will feud with him first.

The main event battle royal was coming up next… [C]

[Q5] 4. The Great Khali (with Ranjin Singh) won a battle royal that included Jeff Hardy, MVP, Big Show, Umaga, and Mr. Kennedy to earn a WWE Championship match at Summerslam in 10:25. My satellite went in and out during this match. I caught the end where Jeff Hardy eliminated Big Show with a head scissors in which he held onto the top rope. Good spot. Khali eliminated Hardy to win the match…

Twill’s Two Cents: Knowing already about the other big Summerslam match from the Smackdown side, I guess I understand this. I could see WWE not wanting to take the belt off of Triple H and at the same time, not wanting to give a future serious contender a loss. However, why not give Umaga the shot? He has a history with Triple H, they would have a great match, and they could save Hardy, MVP, and even Kennedy for future title shots. Khali vs. Triple H at Summerslam reminds me of Undertaker vs. King Mabel (Big Daddy V) at Summerslam 1995.

[Q6] Triple H came out to the ring and got right in Khali’s chest. Singh pulled Khali from the confrontation as the two made belt gestures… [C]

5. Michelle McCool defeated Maryse in a non-title match in 2:01. The belt almost slipped off of Michelle’s overly skinny waist. Passable match that ended with Michelle locking in the heel hook and Maryse tapping out…

Twill’s Two Cents: What was the deal with the belt? That thing flapped around like a wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man. I was a little disappointed that Natalya did not at least make an appearance.

The same long camera shot of where Vickie will enter the arena if she arrives was shown… [C]

[Q7] JR put over the WWE Championship match at Summerslam with an on-screen graphic of Triple H vs. The Great Khali. I wonder if Hardy will be added to this debacle…

Chavo Guerrero rolled Vickie Guerrero into the arena. They were approached by Bam Neely, who started talking to Chavo about Edge before Chavo motioned to him to keep his mouth shut. Vickie inquired as to what was being said and Chavo said it would be best if they spoke in her office… [C]

Maria will finally debut next week on Smackdown. You would think she was the President with how long it took for her to make her first appearance and the hype they are giving her…

Neely approached Edge and told him Vickie had arrived. Edge said he had to apologize to Vickie and wanted to do it in public…

Brian Kendrick and Ezekiel came to the ring. JR compared Kendrick to Brian Pillman. Last week it was Shawn Michaels and this week it was Pillman. Some people think very highly of him. Kendrick gave a solid promo saying the fans should brag to their friends about how they were able to see Kendrick at the beginning of his run as a superstar…

6. Brian Kendrick (with Ezekiel) defeated Shannon Moore in 1:56. In a basic squash, Kendrick hit his finisher, “The Kendrick,” for the win…

Twill’s Two Cents: I am enjoying very much what they are doing with Kendrick.

Neely went to Vickie’s office and told her that Edge wanted to apologize, or he wanted her to apologize to him. Chavo wondered why she would have to apologize to him. Bam was confused… [C]

[Q8] Ben Stiller gave a nice promo about Generation Rescue and Saturday Night’s Main Event…

Edge came to the ring and immediately proclaimed his intention to apologize to his wife Victoria. After some delay, Vickie came out with Chavo and Bam. After entering the ring, she sent Chavo and Bam away. Edge dropped to a knee.

Edge said he knew what he did was wrong and that he could not live without Vickie’s love. He then said that the video did not show him repeating saying no. He said he did not walk away because he wanted the wedding to go smoothly and thus, did not want to upset the wedding planner.

Vickie forgave Edge and they hugged. She said she understood. Edge tried to kiss her but she turned her head away. She said she understood but Edge needed to understand something too. She said she did something while she was mad at Edge that he would not like. She said she reinstated The Undertaker.

Edge’s facial expressions were spot on. He told Vickie that she was a businesswoman and reinstating Taker was good for business. He then came up with a scheme that saw Triple H and Undertaker obliterating each other. Edge then would pick the bones and win back the WWE Championship.

Vickie found that to be a good idea, except for the fact that she booked Undertaker in a match at Summerslam. Edge asked who the opponent was. Vickie scowled at him, “You.” Edge looked shocked and frustrated. He said Vickie could not be serious. Vickie said she was serious and it would be Hell in a Cell. Vickie did her best evil laugh as Edge sat in shock and the show went off the air…

Twill’s Two Cents: Great segment to start the show, great segment to end the show. Vickie was as good here as she has ever been and Edge was fantastic in his reactions to Vickie’s comments. If Vickie can reinstate The Undertaker, could she just suspend him again too? Other than that hole in logic, the segment was very strong.

Another very good Smackdown, what did you think of the show? Feel free to email me. I can be reached at dotnetrich@gmail.com.

What did you think of WWE's Jeff Hardy "unconscious in a stairwell" storyline?
It was a brilliant final hook for the pay-per-view.
It was a turnoff, but it's par for the course with WWE.
It was one of the sleaziest stunts the company has ever done.
