11/18 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Final hype for Survivor Series, Randy Orton and Sheamus vs. Cody Rhodes and Wade Barrett
Nov 18, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on 11/15 in Bridgeport, Conn.

[Q1] The show opened with Mark Henry assaulting Daniel Bryan backstage. He slammed Bryan on several boxes and then dragged him out to the ring. Once in the ring, Bryan hit a couple of kicks but Henry grabbed his leg and shoved Bryan to the mat. He followed with an elbow drop and then the World's Strongest Slam. Refs ran out and rolled Bryan to the floor.

Henry took a mic and said Bryan was in pain, and there would be more. Henry said Big Show felt the pain, but apparently he had to give Show more. He said one of them was getting carried out at Survivor Series, but it wouldn't be him. He said he was leaving World Champion. He went to the back as the refs continued to check on Bryan…

The announce team narrated a replay of Henry's attack and then hyped the tag team main event…Sin Cara made his ring entrance…[C]

Shore's Slant: Great, great stuff from Henry and Bryan there. Bryan made Henry look like a killer, and that promo was spot on. Wow. Best thing on wrestling TV.

Vickie Guerrero introduced Dolph Ziggler and put over that he would pull double duty again at Survivor Series…

1. Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero) defeated Sin Cara at 4:10. Ziggler slapped Sin Cara early and smiled at him. Sin Cara responded by hitting a flying head scissor that spilled Ziggler to the floor. He followed with a suicide dive. Ziggler caught him getting back in the ring, but Sin Cara came back with kicks.

[Q2] Sin Cara tried for a rollup, but Ziggler reversed it to score the surprise victory. Post-match, Sin Cara attacked Ziggler and beat him down in the corner. Jack Swagger ran out and attacked Sin Cara until Ziggler recovered. They then hit a combo wheelbarrow lift into fameassor. Mason Ryan's music hit and he ran to the ring. He slammed Ziggler and stared at Swagger on the floor…[C]

Shore's Slant: An OK win for Ziggler. The post-match stuff makes sense insofar as the next match will probably be Swagger and Mason. Sin Cara continues to improve and look more settled each week.

2. Mason Ryan defeated Jack Swagger (w/Vickie Guerrero) in about 6:00. The match was joined in progress so I added two minutes. Ryan got in most of the offense and hit his full-nelson slam for the win…

[Q3] Backstage, Alicia Fox and Justin Gabriel flirted with each other. Zack Ryder walked up and asked them to sign his petition. They said yes, and Big Show walked in and took the phone away to sign it himself. Ryder looked serious and Show asked what was wrong. Ryder told Show what happened with Henry and Bryan. Big Show looked upset and stormed off…[C]

Shore's Slant: Sleepy match from Ryan and Swagger. I'm not a fan of Ryan, and Swagger didn't carry him well here. The Big Show thing was well done. I am so digging his feud with Henry.

Back from commercial, Ted DiBiase and Hornswoggle were playing WWE '12. Just go with it. Teddy Long walked in and congratulated Ted on his recent wins and DiBiase Posse Parties. Ted started to talk about it and Aksana's music kicked. She walked in and Ted and Horny took off. Aksana said she wanted someone to teach her the new video game because she was an expert at handling a joystick. Teddy told her to meet him later and they would play together. She gave him a little kiss on the cheek and left. Teddy tried to talk himself out of a heart attack…

Christian's music hit and he hobbled out to the ramp in a neck brace and with a boot and crutch. He cut a promo on being injured, and that it was a Teddy Long's fault. He put himself over as being a man for facing Sheamus after Show's chokeslam. He said normally he would be asking for one more title match, but he was just hoping for one more match, period. He said he was ashamed of the fans and wished them good riddance…

Backstage, the trainer checked on Bryan, as did AJ. Show walked in and apologized to Bryan. He said it was his fault and Bryan told him no. Show said if he had been there, it wouldn't have happened. He got seriously pissed off and stormed off saying he had to find Henry…

Shore's Slant: Please let the Long/Aksana stuff to be coming to an end soon. Please. Christian's promo gives me hope for a new character. God knows he needs it. And once again, Show played that perfectly.

[Q4][C] Ted DiBiase made his entrance. Derrick Bateman was already in the ring. A cut-in promo introduced the engaged Derrick Bateman and Maxine…

3. Ted DiBiase defeated Derrick Bateman at 2:42. DiBiase started out quick, but Maxine distracted him to allow Bateman to take control. DiBiase escaped a chin lock with an inverted atomic drop. He ran his ending series and finished with Dreamstreet for the win…[C]

Shore's Slant: Another enhancement match for DiBiase. He needs a new look and definitely some new music. Hopefully they have a re-launch for him planned for after Survivor Series.

Big Show was walking backstage and walked up on Jinder Mahal and Tyson Kidd. They were half laughing and Show asked what was so funny. Kidd said nothing and that Henry had left already. Jinder said something to him in Punjabi. Show asked him to repeat it in English. Jinder said no. Show knocked him out and looked at Kidd. Kidd tiptoed away and Show headed towards the ring.

A video recapped the beating Henry gave Bryan, and then Show made his ring entrance. He cut a promo on having to stay focused so he doesn't get disqualified. He showed the video of Henry breaking his leg and said that kept him focused on taking the thing most precious to Henry, the world title.

[Q5] He said Henry would be the one carried out of Survivor Series. He balled his fist up and told Henry to look at it closely because it was coming for him. He faked a punch to the camera and then started laughing. The camera cut away quickly and Show got it together…Kofi Kingston made his ring entrance…[C]

Shore's Slant: Good promo from Show that fell apart with the laugh. What a shame. It's still the best story on all of wrestling television right now.

Hunico made his ring entrance and cut a promo entirely in Spanish. The only word I knew was "Hunico." Sorry, we start Spanish next year…

4. Kofi Kingston defeated Hunico at 5:02. Hunico took quick control with a drop kick to prevent a monkey flip. He worked stomps and rest holds for several near falls. Kofi came back and reversed a whip in the corner into a pendulum kick. He followed with a high crossbody that Hunico rolled through for a nearfall. Kofi popped up and ducked a clothesline and hit the SOS for the win…An Ezekiel Jackson hype video aired…[C]

Shore's Slant: Fun match from a pure wrestling standpoint. Hunico has serious skills between the ropes, and wrestling Kofi does nothing but help you. Still, I'm not a big fan of them trying to build hype for this Survivor Series match. There's no rhyme to the match in the first place, so why try to build heat on something that is illogical? It's too little too late to the point of insulting.

The women made their ring entrance as Cole announced that the Eve vs. Beth match will be a lumberjill match…[C]

[Q6] 5. Beth Phoenix and Natalya defeated AJ and Kaitlyn at 2:38. Beth and Kaitlyn started. The heels took quick control and worked Kaitlyn with basic moves. Natty locked on an abdominal stretch, but Kaitlyn hip-tossed out. She tagged in AJ who hit a high crossbody and tried for a sunset flip. Natty stepped over and locked in a Sharpshooter. She leaned all the way back until her head touched the mat and AJ tapped. Post-match, Kaitlyn wouldn't help her partner…[C]

Shore's Slant: Squash match that did more for Natty than Beth. AJ's flexibility is now Melina awe inspiring.

[Q7] The announce team setup a replay of the Rock's return to Raw…The announce team ran down the Survivor Series card…Randy Orton made his ring entrance…[C]

Sheamus made his ring entrance, followed by Wade Barrett. A video recapped his win over Orton last week. Cody Rhodes was out last. He did a cut-in promo and said Barrett asked him not to let his personal feelings get in the way of their match. Cody asked "what personal problems?" and then laughed…

[Q8] 6. Randy Orton and Sheamus defeated Cody Rhodes and Wade Barrett at 10:40. Barrett and Sheamus started, and Barrett quickly worked over Sheamus. Sheamus got the hot tag to Orton and Orton ran his big offense series on Barrett. He hit the rope DDT and setup for the RKO. Cody Rhodes climbed on the top rope and jumped off, but Orton saw him and hit a kick. He hit his lifting backbreaker and turned into a Barrett big boot…[C]

Back from commercial, Rhodes worked over Orton and Christian had joined the heels at ringside. Orton tried to escape, but Cody got the tag and Barrett knocked Sheamus to the floor. Barrett worked Orton with strikes until Orton ducked a clothesline and hit his backbreaker. Both men got hot tags, and Sheamus laid out Cody. He hit his shoulder tackle from the top and tossed Barrett over the top when he ran in.

Sheamus set up for the Brogue kick, but Christian tripped him with his crutch. He hit Sheamus with the crutch, causing the DQ. Cody hit the Beautiful Disaster kick on Sheamus and took the crutch. Sheamus hit the Brogue kick on Rhodes and then broke the crutch on Barrett's back. Orton popped in the ring and hit an RKO on Barrett, and Sheamus closed with a Celtic Cross on Rhodes…

Shore's Slant: I have to admit I am a little shocked by this. Booking 101 says the heels go over on Sunday because of this. But if both heels retain the titles, as they should, and Awesome Truth goes over because of Rock/Cena controversy, as they should, then you would think the babyfaces go over here. And if that's the case, why not let the heels go over here? Odd booking all the way around, but I guess we find out at Survivor Series. I'll have more tomorrow on the hitlist and the All Access podcast. Thanks for watching along and I will see you then.
