10/28 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Several Raw wrestlers compete and updates on Big Show and Mark Henry
Oct 28, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on 10/25 in Houston, Texas

[Q1] A video recapped the Vengeance match between Mark Henry and the Big Show and asked what the future of the title was…

Teddy Long was introduced and he was already in the ring. Teddy said that because of the circumstances at Vengeance, the World title was in flux. He said even though both guys were injured, they were there tonight and he would address the situation later.

Christian's music hit before Teddy could say more. Josh Mathews, Michael Cole, and Booker T checked in on commentary. Christian cut his promo asking for one more match. He dared Teddy to find someone more worthy. CM Punk's music hit and he made his entrance to a good reaction.

Christian demanded to know why Punk was there and why he interrupted him. Teddy said he was trying to announce that he arranged for some of the Raw Superstars to be there for a Super Smackdown. Punk thanked Teddy and said it was nice to be on a show with competent leadership. Christian laughed and Punk said Christian must not have spent time with Johnny Ace.

Punk said he was there to see Christian. He said he wanted to see him get one more match. He started to compliment Christian, but Christian cut him off and said Punk leaving the company this summer was a joke, just like Punk getting a title shot.

Punk said he was tired of Christian's bitching and bitching and bitching and he went on like that for way too long. Christian said as the leader of Smackdown, nobody wanted Punk around. Punk said it sounded like the fans wanted him there. He said it also sounded like they wanted to see Punk in a match with Christian. Teddy booked it and Christian sold being pissed as Punk celebrated…

Shore's Slant: That was a good setup for this show, but this appears to be a holding week where very little growth to Survivor Series storylines is going to happen. What a waste of two hours. At least Punk vs. Christian should be fun to watch.

[Q2] Ring entrances occurred for the tag match. A video recapped the attack on Cena from Raw, and Cena's choice of the Rock as his partner…

1. Awesome Truth defeated Air Boom at 8:22. Miz and Kofi started. Truth tagged in quickly and mauled Kofi. Kofi ducked a corner splash and tagged Bourne. Bourne got in a few licks on Truth, but Truth knocked him to the floor and worked him there…[C]

Back at 6:06, Miz was working on Bourne. Truth tagged in and Bourne hit a jumping enziguri to tag in Kofi. Kofi cleaned up and hit a huge cross body on Miz, but the heels hit Little Jimmy's Finale for the win…

Post-match Awesome Truth cut a promo about how they have beat so many people. Truth said they beat some brain damage into Cena because Cena picked the only guy who likes Cena less than they did. Miz said if Cena and Rock didn't destroy each other before, they would finish the job at Survivor Series…

Shore's Slant: An OK match. Tag matches in WWE have become as cookie cutter as housing developments. The paint and roof colors change, but it's the same damn house. I appreciate the effort to make Awesome Truth look good heading into the PPV, but I really don't think it's going to work. Too little, too late.

[Q3][C] Backstage, a bunch of guys were talking about the Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels DVD. Daniel Bryan talked about getting trained by HBK. Tyson Kidd walked up and argued with Bryan about whether Shawn or Bret was better. Santino said they should settle it in the ring. Both men agreed and Kidd walked off…

Hornswoggle was shown dressed like Zack Ryder. Teddy walked up and was talking to him when Vickie and her boys walked up. Vickie said what happened to Ryder was for Teddy putting Ziggler in two matches at the PPV. Ziggler said he stole the show and was still the champ and Teddy was going to have to step up his game to mess with Ziggler. Teddy said he wasn't trying to mess with anybody, and then booked Ziggler vs. Randy Orton and said Swagger was banned from ringside. Aksana walked up then, and she and Teddy went to his office…

A video recapped the Triple H vs. Kevin Nash angle. Back ringside, the announce team used their serious voice to say Hunter will be out for six weeks with a fractured vertebrate…Wade Barrett made his ring entrance…[C]

Shore's Slant: The Shawn vs. Bret surrogate match might be good, but Kidd and Bryan were awful setting it up. It felt forced to this viewer. And I grow so weary of the babyface GM screwing the heel and yet proclaiming innocence. Spare me. And holy crap at Aksana's boobs. They showed up three minutes before she did.

[Q4] Barrett stood in the ring. A cut-in video showed Barrett cutting a promo and compared what he does as warfare. He said the Barrett Barrage continues tonight. Gag me…

2. Wade Barrett squashed Trent Baretta at 2:31. Barrett hit a sidewalk slam in the first 20 seconds and it was all him from there. He reversed a hurricanranna attempt into Wasteland for the win…[C]

Shore's Slant: Enhancement match for Barrett. Good. He needs them. Bad.

Randy Orton made his ring entrance. Dolph and Vickie were out next. Before the match could start, Cody Rhodes made his entrance and joined the commentary team…

[Q5] 3. Randy Orton defeated Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero) at 15:00. The first minute and a half happened last quarter. Both men worked fast, including a fun series running the ropes. Ziggler fled from Orton and ran around the ring. Vickie stood in front of Orton, but Orton leapt over her and clotheslined Ziggler, sending Vickie into a tantrum…[C]

Back at 8:38, Ziggler hit a dropkick to take control. Ziggler hit a nice DDT and neckbreaker for two. Ziggler went to the top and Orton caught him. Orton hit a superplex for a good nearfall. They traded blows for a moment, and then Orton kicked into his clotheslines and scoop slam. He yelled at Vickie and hit the rope DDT. He went for the RKO, but Ziggler shoved him off and hit a great superkick for two. Ziggler tried to hit the Zig Zag, but Orton grabbed the ropes and hit the RKO for the win…

A video recapped the Sin Cara vs. Sin Cara match from last week. Backstage, Matt Striker interviewed Hunico who cut a promo in half English, half Spanish. He said it was payback time…

Shore's Slant: The crowd popped huge for the finish, but that match is the reason you have screwy finishes. Ziggler was great there, and Orton showed why we say he's in his prime. Ziggler did not need a loss there. And what did Rhodes add to commentary other than yet another voice with nothing to say? Ugh. Still no name for the wrestler formerly known as Hinico? Thanks for that WWE!

[Q6][C] A Brodus Clay hype video aired…

4.Daniel Bryan defeated Tyson Kidd at 2:34. Both men started fast. Tyson Kidd flipped out of a pin attempt to try and hook the Sharpshooter, but Bryan reversed into the LaBell lock for the submission victory…

A video recapped John Cena's main event tag match from Raw on Monday, including the beat down. Didn't we do this already? The announce team hyped The Rock responding on Monday…Cole stood on the announce table and said he had issued the Michael Cole Challenge and JR had accepted. He showed all the stupid pics from Monday, and repeated that if he lost he would quit. Big Show's music hit and he came to the ring in street clothes…

Shore's Slant: Bryan vs. Kidd deserved at least eight minutes, and I would have preferred 15 to 20. What a waste of time, and a little bit of a slap in the face of Bret. Just a little. Then we get virtually the same video we got during the Awesome Truth match. That time could have gone to Bryan and Kidd. And Cole's TV time was certainly a waste.

[Q7][C] Still pics showed Big Show and Henry collapsing the ring at Vengeance. Josh Matthews said the WWE doctor said both men suffered strained muscles and ligaments in their necks and upper bodies. Show cut a promo and put over Henry as giving him a great fight, perhaps the toughest he has ever had. He said that even though he should probably stay away, he has asked Teddy Long to grant him a rematch and Teddy said yes.

Mark Henry's music hit and he came to the ring in his ring gear. Henry took a mic and stood on the stairs and said he handled his business so he was through with Big Show. Henry said he was sore because the ring collapsed. He said Show was sore because he had made Show that way.

Henry said he must not have done a great job because Show was still running his mouth. He said if he put his foot in Show's mouth, Show would stop. Show egged him on by taking his coat off. Henry started to get in the ring, but then sold being sore. He ended up leaving Show in the ring…[C]

Shore's Slant: A good segment for the big men. I wasn't blown away, but it was logical and neither guy sucked. Hard to find fault with that.

CM Punk and Christian made their ring entrances…

[Q8] 5. CM Punk defeated Christian at 13:25. Punk started out quick with arm bars and kicks. Christian missed a cross body and Punk ducked. Punk lifted for GTS, and Alberto Del Rio's music hit. He and Ricardo Rodriguez walked to the ring. Christian slid off Punk's shoulders and hit an impaler DDT for two…[C]

Back at 7:15, Christian continued to work on Punk. He tossed Punk to the floor near Del Rio, but Del Rio didn't move. Christian slammed Punk head first on the announce table and rolled him in the ring for two. Punk battled back and hit a neckbreaker for two. Christian shoved Punk onto the ropes, hit his punch from the floor, and then came off the top for a cross body that Punk rolled through for a near fall.

Christian went for the Kill Switch, but Punk shoved him in the corner and hit the high knee, followed by the bulldog. Ric Rod jumped on the apron and Punk chased him away. Punk went to the top for the Macho Man elbow, but Ric Rod distracted the ref and Del Rio knocked him down. Christian setup for the spear, but Sheamus's music hit. He ran to the ring and stared at Christian. Christian turned around and Punk hit the GTS for the win…

Shore's Slant: Good match, but an overbooked finish. It wasn't a tragedy, but three interference moments is just too many. It took a lot of luster off the match. Yes, I was advocating for a screwy finish earlier, and I guess this mess is what prevented it on that match. A shame. Christian getting a loss here would not have knocked his character any lower. I'll have more to say tomorrow on the hitlist and the All Access podcast. Thanks for reading and I will see you then.
