10/24 Powell's WWE Raw SuperShow Live Coverage: The fallout from WWE Vengeance, followup to Kevin Nash attacking Triple H, The Miz and R-Truth attacking John Cena
Oct 24, 2011 - 10:00 PM

By Jason Powell

WWE Raw on the USA Network
Live from Austin, Texas

[Q1] The opening video played to start the show. The pyro display went off on the stage. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler introduced the show from ringside. They narrated still shot photos from Vengeance of the two title matches, and of Kevin Nash performing the Jackknife Powerbomb on Triple H. Cole said he can't remember a pay-per-view where so much controversy was involved...

Triple H's music played and he headed to the ring wearing jeans and a t-shirt rather than the usual suit. The crowd chanted Triple H's name as he paused before starting his promo. He said it's a tough business. He said he was taught that early when he trained with Killer Kowalski that he could make friends or make money. He said he's always lived by those words.

Hunter said he considered himself the lucky one who was able to make money and have a strong group of friends. He mentioned Shawn Michaels, Sean Waltman, and Kevin Nash. He said somewhere along the line, things changed. Hunter said he sensed that some of them were there for a reason once he gained power.

Triple H said Kevin Nash was supposed to be one of the guys who was there for life. He said Nash changed and it was all about money, business, and power. Hunter held up The Kliq sign and said he thought it was forever. He said one of his friends came to the ring at Vengeance and tried to break his neck.

Hunter said he's not worried about his neck or his well being. "This might sound corny, but Kevin Nash broke my heart," he said. Triple H said he's known Nash for 20 years and he knows he's in the building. He said that if the last 20 years have meant anything, Nash should get his ass in the ring. He said he didn't want to have a discussion, he said he wanted to meet man-to-man and kick Nash's ass.

The crowd loudly chanted Triple H's name. Hunter called out for Nash again. "For once in your life, be a man, Kev," Hunter said. He was interrupted by John Laurinaitis, who said he heard rumors that Nash was in Austin, and he also heard rumors that he was at home watching the show.

Hunter told Laurinaitis to shut up and not walk through the ropes. "You walk through those ropes and it's not going to end well for you," Triple H said. Laurinaitis kept talking and said Hunter shouldn't embarrass the company. Hunter told him to shut up. He said Laurinaitis still reports to him. He said Laurinaitis's job tonight is to scour the building, find Nash, and bring him to the ring.

Triple H said he's going to go to jail for what he does to Kevin Nash. He said he's going to embarrass the company for what he's going to do. Hunter said Laurinaitis should offer Nash a contract so big that he can't say no so that he would show up and he could kick his ass.

John Laurinaitis said Triple H was being unreasonable. Triple H left the ring but stopped at the top of the stage to tell Laurinaitis to shut up. Kevin Nash walked out behind Triple H and hit him with a sledgehammer. Laurinaitis ran to the stage and said Nash isn't supposed to be there. Security ushered Nash to the back. Trainers and referees ran out to help Hunter.

Nash was shown walking through the backstage area. He passed Teddy Long and then David Otunga, among others. The footage of Nash attacking Triple H was shown again. Back live, Triple H blew off the trainers and referees and took a couple of steps forward before falling down. The trainers called for the paramedics...

Powell's POV: It's worth noting that Triple H did not list Scott Hall when running through the names of The Kliq members. I liked most of the promo, but he really lost me with the line about Nash breaking his heart, and the shot of Triple H falling over backstage was really corny. The crowd was hot for Triple H, but Nash didn't get the type of heat you'd expect for attacking a guy who drew such a strong reaction.

[Q2] [C] Cole and Lawler used the somber voices while discussing the Triple H medical situation. They replayed the footage of Nash throwing security around after hitting Hunter with the sledgehammer...

Backstage, paramedics were loading Triple H into the ambulance. Kevin Nash showed up and insisted that they put him down. Nash took Hunter, who was strapped to a gurney, and stood him upright. Nash put the sledgehammer in his face. Security yelled out for him to stop, but he threatened them with the sledgehammer.

Nash took the shot at Triple H's head. Security intervened, but Nash got away by threatening them with the sledgehammer. Laurinaitis showed up and acted concerned as the paramedics loaded Hunter into the ambulance...

Powell's POV: The folks in Nashville better be paying close attention. WWE looks like they're also out to prove that Talking Matters tonight. Honestly, though, the backstage followup with Nash taking the shot at Hunter's head was better than some of the corniness we saw in the initial attack and the fall backstage.

A shot aired of an ambulance leaving the building...

Powell's POV: It took the medical crew that long to get him loaded into the ambulance? Did they play a quick game of cards once they got him inside the ambulance?

Yet another replay aired. This time it was of Nash attacking Triple H backstage. You know, the segment we just saw... Ring entrances for the first match took place...

[Q3] 1. Randy Orton and Sheamus beat Christian and Cody Rhodes in 11:25. Cody didn't pass out paper bags, but he still has the face shield, and still doesn't have knee pads. After some back and forth action, the show cut to commercial 2:40 into the match. Cole pointed out that Great White was trending on Twitter.

Powell's POV: Will the '80s rock band Great White hurry up and sue WWE over giving their name to Sheamus? Oddly enough, "Only Black People Say" is also trending on Twitter. Yes, really. In related news, who gives a shit what is trending on Twitter?

Late in the match, Cody avoided the Brogue Kick and then performed a springboard kick of his own. He had Sheamus pinned, but Orton broke it up and attacked Cody. Christian went after Orton only to eat an RKO. Cody threw Orton to ringside and went for another springboard, only to have Sheamus catch him right in the balls with a Brogue Kick. Sheamus followed up with a Celtic Cross for the clean pin...

Powell's POV: I haven't seen a guy take a shot in the balls like that since, well, Sunday when Vikings defensive lineman Brian Robison kicked Packers offensive lineman T.J. Lang low. The match was fine, but having the babyfaces go over a night after they both won their singles matches leaves the heel duo looking really soft.

The announcers narrated still shots of the Vengeance main event...

Backstage, Laurinaitis spoke with Stephanie McMahon on the phone and told her that Triple H is okay. He took offense when he thought she was blaming him. David Otunga was in the room with Laurinatis and told him that Stephanie was just upset. John Cena burst into the room and told Otunga to take a powder.

Laurinaitis asked Cena what he could do for him. Cena, who should be upset, snuck in a plug for Zack Ryder's Twitter page (yes, really) and a bad joke about Laurinaitis quitting. Laurinaitis said he would pick Cena's partner and give him a match against The Miz and R-Truth. Cena said it would be fine as long as his partner isn't carrying a skateboard...

A video teased The Muppets for next week's Raw...

Powell's POV: Cena should be irate over The Miz and R-Truth costing him the WWE Championship, but he's feeling jovial enough to slip in Twitter plugs and bad jokes? Gee, I can't imagine why the WWE Championship feels so meaningless these days. Do Cena and/or the writers really believe the skateboarding references resonate with enough viewers to justify the tired jokes?

[Q4] [C] A Twitter Frenzy graphic boasted that more people were talking about Vengeance that the World Series last night...

Powell's POV: My God, their Twitter obsession is getting worse. I am seriously embarrassed for them.

2. Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero, Jack Swagger) beat Santino Marella in 1:45. Santino teased The Cobra. Dolph backed through the ropes. When Santino turned his head to talk to the referee, Dolph hit him with a cheap shot. Ziggler eventually hit his finisher and scored the clean pin.

After the match, Swagger put Santino in the ankle lock. Mason Ryan ran out and made the save by blasting Swagger with a boot to the face. Ryan jawed with Ziggler, who was standing on the floor...

Backstage, The Bellas were talking when Zack Ryder excitedly entered the scene and announced that he'll be John Cena's partner in the match against The Miz and R-Truth... The announcers hyped that Alberto Del Rio's victory speech was coming up next... [C] An ad hyped The Rock's "return to action" at Survivor Series...

Powell's POV: I was hoping for a strong followup for Dolph Ziggler, who has been showing breakout potential lately. Rather, it looks like they are going to count on him to get a passable match out of Mason "Red Flag" Ryan.

Justin Roberts introduced Ricardo Rodriguez, who then introduced Alberto Del Rio.

[Q5] Del Rio drove a sports car into the building and then headed to the ring in street clothes rather than wrestling gear. Del Rio boasted about retaining the WWE Championship and said it's going to stay that way for a long time.

C.M. Punk's entrance music played and he headed to the ring. Punk recalled Del Rio saying no one could beat him. Punk said that's not true because he beat him on multiple occasions, including four weeks ago on Raw. Punk said he never received his rematch after Del Rio cashed in the Money in the Bank contract on him.

Del Rio said he will defend his title against any worthy opponent, but Punk doesn't fit that criteria. He said Punk didn't even win his match at Vengeance. He said that makes Punk a loser and losers don't deserve title shots. Del Rio told Punk to come and see him once he gets a victory. Del Rio said Punk is at the back of the line.

Eventually, John Laurinaitis came out and suggested the idea of Del Rio vs. Punk for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. Punk said that's exactly what he wants but questioned what the catch was. Laurinaitis said there was only one thing Punk has to do. Punk questioned whether it was getting new ball bearings for Laurinaitis's skateboard. Ugh.

Laurinaitis said Punk has to tell the world that he respects him. "Are you Aretha Franklin?" Punk asked. Punk said Laurinaitis doesn't respect him given that he doesn't wear a suit. Punk complained about the product. He said the ring collapses and Kevin Nash interferes in every other match he has.

Laurinaitis told Punk to swallow his pride and say that he respects him. "Don't get hot," Punk said. "I respect you, Funk Man," Punk said while doing a Laurinaitis impersonation. Laurinaitis gave him one more chance to do it right. The fans chanted Punk's name.

Punk said he respects Laurinaitis. He said he respects him because he comes out in front of the WWE Universe with a lost look on his face. He said he respects that Laurinaitis doesn't know how close to keep the mic to his face. It went on a bit longer before Laurinaitis said he doesn't accept that type of statement.

Laurinaitis said he is going to take another weak to think about it. Punk told him to think about respecting "this." Punk attacked Del Rio, who avoided the GTS. However, Ricardo Rodriguez ended up taking the GTS from Punk...

The announcers hyped the Cena and Ryder vs. Miz and Truth match... [C] An ad for WrestleMania 28 tickets going on sale...

Powell's POV: It's nice to see someone other than John Cena in the WWE Championship picture, but I just don't like Laurinaitis as a featured television character. They can't remove the interim title quickly enough.

[Q6] 3. Alicia Fox defeated Natalya. Beth Phoenix was on commentary. Fox won with a roll up. A shot aired of Eve and Kelly Kelly smiling while they watched the match on a backstage monitor. Natalya took a shot at Fox after the match...

The announcers hyped the main event tag match... [C]

Powell's POV: The John Cena flick "The Reunion" comes out on November 8 at Walmart, according to a commercial that aired. The movie must suck hard if Cena isn't even mentioning it on the air.

4. Wade Barrett beat John Morrison in 9:30. Cole said he's been tweeting all night long because Jim Ross has been badmouthing him. He said he'll have a worldwide exclusive in the form of photographs that he's going to show. As for the match, they ended up fighting at ringside, where Barrett ran Morrison into the guardrail leading into the break. [C]

[Q7] After the break, the announcers said Barrett has been taking it to Morrison throughout the commercial break. Morrison made his comeback at 7:30 and hit Barrett with a running knee. Later, Barrett caught Morrison coming off the ropes and dropped him. Barrett picked up Morrison and hit Wasteland for the win...

Powell's POV: They botched the finish somehow. Barrett was supposed to catch Morrison on his shoulders and hit Wasteland, but he lost him.

Highlights aired from earlier in the show of Kevin Nash's backstage attack on Triple H. Cole announced that Triple H suffered a concussion. He said he also suffered a neck injury, "perhaps even a broken neck." Lawler said the show must go on, so he turned his attention back to Cole's Tweeting. Good lord.

Cole stood on the desk and asked for attention. Cole said Ross has been on Twitter and the WWE chat room lying about him. Cole said that what Ross doesn't realize is that he accidentally sent out photos on his Twitter page to the entire world. Cue the photoshopped photos of Ross shirtless, etc.

Lawler stood up and told Cole to sit down. Cole said he wasn't done yet. Cole said he wants to put an end to it once and for all. Cole challenged Ross to "The Michael Cole Challenge." He said he was going to keep the rules under wraps. He said that if Ross wins, he'll quit... [C]

Powell's POV: So the rules could be Ross in a gauntlet match versus 2,000 men. Gee, I'm intrigued. Ross should call in sick next week.

[Q8] The Muppets ad aired again for next week's Raw... Backstage, Josh Mathews interviewed Zack Ryder, who said he's not worried about The Miz and R-Truth because he's more excited about his first Raw main event. The Miz and R-Truth attacked Ryder and left him lying backstage...

The Miz and R-Truth started to make their entrance. Miz told them to cut the "You Suck" music. Miz spoke about "the revolution that we started." He said the fans should look at Triple H now. R-Truth said Hunter got exactly what he deserved. Truth said this is only the beginning. Miz said Cena could wear all the dippy motivational catchphrases he wants, but he can't rise above "this"... [C]

Powell's POV: I love it. Angry Miz and Truth beats the hell out of singing, chicken shit heel Miz and Truth. Hopefully I'll still love it once the main event is over. By the way, the Smackdown ad focussed on the broken ring and questioned what the future of the World Hvt. Championship is. In other words, no matches teased.

Another ad aired for The Rock's return to action at Survivor Series...

Justin Roberts announced that John Laurinaitis had declared that the main event would now be a handicap match due to Ryder's injury...

5. John Cena defeated The Miz and R-Truth by DQ in a handicap match in 4:55. Cole recalled Truth and Miz saying that the party was just getting started. Cena wore the camouflage shorts rather than the usual jorts, so the pay-per-view look appears here to stay. The usual mixed reaction for Cena.

[Overrun] Cena took a lot of punishment early, but he rallied back and had Miz up for the Attitude Adjustment when R-Truth hit him with a water bottle for the DQ. Afterward, the heels went to ringside and grabbed chairs. Before they could use them, John Laurinaitis told them to stop over the mic.

Laurinaitis entered the ring and said he wouldn't stand for their disrespect. He told Miz and Truth to get out and then ordered the referees to escort them to the back. They started to leave, but Laurinaitis told them to stop. He said he was going to put them in a legitimate tag team match.

Laurinaitis said he picked Cena's partner and it didn't work out, so he's letting Cena pick his own partner at Survivor Series. Cena grabbed the mic and accused Laurinaitis of orchestrating another setup. Then he stopped and said, "Whoa, I can choose anybody I want." A "Rocky" chant broke out.

Cena thought about it and then looked at The Miz and R-Truth. He said he's sick of them thinking that they run the program. He said that he's not doing it out of friendship. He said that if he's going to beat The Miz and R-Truth, then his partner must be someone who is going to bring it. A huge "Rocky" chant started.

Cena said he's going to send the invite out. He said he doesn't know if it will be accepted or not. With a big gob of spit on his bottom lip, Cena announced that his partner will be The Rock. The fans cheered, and Miz and Truth fretted at ringside. The announcers raved over the match potential for Survivor Series...

Powell's POV: Cena nearly defeated The Miz and R-Truth clean in a handicap match, but now we're supposed to see them as such threats that Cena needs help from The Rock? Ugh. I can only hope that Cena is in on the conspiracy with Laurinaitis and this is a setup for Cena turning heel on The Rock at Survivor Series.

My excitement over The Miz and Truth's pre-match antics didn't continue through the main event match given that they couldn't even get a win over Cena in a handicap match. This match feels nearly as lopsided as the DX vs. Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase match did at SummerSlam a while back.

Overall, the show was more of the same with more Twitter mentions than anything. I'll have more to say in the member exclusive audio review of Raw later tonight.
