7/18 Twilling's West Coast WWE Smackdown Coverage: Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy, Umaga vs. Mr. Kennedy, Triple H spoils Edge and Vickie Guerrero's wedding reception
By Rich Twilling Jul 18, 2008 - 11:59 PM

WWE Smackdown on The CW Network
Taped 7/15/08 in Charlotte, NC

[Q1] A video aired with romantic undertones showcasing the love between Edge and Vickie Guerrero. It was more corny than romantic; especially since the WWE voiceover guy did the narration. The video shifted to Edge and Vickie getting married and in case you were wondering, it was recorded “earlier today.” Chavo pretended to have lost the rings. They sealed the deal with a kiss…

Twill’s Two Cents: I am sure a lot of people are surprised they did not do this on the air since weddings have traditionally brought in huge ratings. However, logically, why would two WWE employees want to get married inside of a wrestling ring during an event?

Jim Ross welcomed us to the show and the live reception. Back to the live arena, the stage was decorated with wedding tables, wedding presents, and a cake. I am sure someone will wear that later tonight. Chavo Guerrero was introduced as the best man and he joined Bam Neely, Zack Ryder, and Curt Hawkins on the stage. They were all dressed in tuxedos. Vickie and Edge were introduced and they joined the crew on the stage.

Chavo made a speech and called Edge the brother he never had. Well technically, oh never mind. He said Edge had a “Guerrero-like wild side” but he was now a changed man. He said although the wedding celebration was big, it would not be as big as the celebration of Edge winning the WWE Championship on Sunday. There was a mock WWE Magazine cover on the screen of Edge winning the title from Triple H.

Edge took over on the mic and said this was the happiest day of his life. He stated it was time to start the show. Finlay and Hornswoggle’s music hit and they made their way to the ring. Jim Ross reminded everyone of the announcement made earlier this week of the WWE Tag Team Championship fatal fourway at the PPV…

Edge told Finlay and Hornswoggle that they always cheat. He announced himself as the special guest referee tonight. Hawkins and Ryder made their way to the ring

Twill’s Two Cents: Is this the best Chavo has ever been on the mic?

1. Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder defeated Finlay and Hornswoggle with Edge as the special guest referee in 2:13. Not much to the match; Edge speared Finlay and Ryder scored the pinfall. Vickie applauded…

[Q2] Edge and Vickie had their first dance on the stage. They played the same music heard during other WWE wedding ceremonies. Check that; two people were singing. Big Show came out and cut in to dance with Vickie. Edge angrily cut the music and ordered Big Show to the ring. Edge said Show did not know who his opponents were but he did. Show had that “I could kick all of your asses” look on his face… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: In a two minute screwjob match, Ryder and Hawkins managed to become a little bit more interesting and credible. You see? It does not take much.

2. Big Show defeated Vladimir Kozlov, The Great Khali, MVP, and Shelton Benjamin in a handicapped match by disqualification in 1:49. Edge was on stage eating his wedding dinner. Funny stuff. Shelton started but was tossed to his corner. MVP tagged in but immediately tagged in Kozlov. Show countered a Kozlov judo throw attempt which prompted Khali to tag in. Show overpowered Khali which brought in the heel team. The referee called for the bell.

After the match, everyone took turns hitting their finishers on Show. Khali stood tall after hitting his two handed chokeslam…

Mick Foley plugged a one on one match between Matt and Jeff Hardy for later in the show… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Out of the four, Kozlov and MVP should have been the two to shine with Benjamin as a possible third. However, Khali came out of that looking stronger than anyone on his team although he has far less to offer than any of them.

[Q3] A video aired of Natalya defeating Cherry last week as well as her post match attack on Michelle McCool…

In the ring, Vickie said it was time to throw the bouquet. Michelle attacked Natalya before Vickie could make the toss. Ryder and Hawkins removed Michelle from the scene. Cherry caught the bouquet and Vickie verbally abused her. She said she would be wrestling Cherry tonight, after she faced Natayla first…

3. Natalya defeated Cherry in :29. Natalya quickly applied the Sharpshooter to score the win…

4. Vickie Guerrero defeated Cherry in :04. She called for the bell, made the cover, and scored the victory... [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: I did not mind this very much because it was Cherry, as opposed to the burying of Armando Estrada on ECW, who is an actual wrestler.

5. Brian Kendrick (with Ezekiel) defeated Jimmy Wang Yang in 4:46. Kendrick had a white leather jacket with mini tassels on it. He wore short trunks and sported a five o’clock shadow of a goatee. Ezekiel was an Ahmed Johnson lookalike. I expected a high flying, fast paced match, but Kendrick kept Wang grounded for the most part. Things picked up when Wang hit a few high spots, but a distraction by Ezekiel allowed Kendrick to hit Sliced Bread #2 for the win…

After the match, Ezekiel put Kendrick’s jacket back on. Foley called Kendrick a throwback to the Shawn Michaels of old, an “Attitude Era Shawn Michaels.”… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: I guess Kendrick’s toned down style was understandable given that he is a heel now. He is intriguing.

Backstage, Edge was given the worst gift in the history of wedding gifts; a box of Slim Jims. He thanked the guy and I am guessing there is more to this…

6. Umaga defeated Mr. Kennedy in 13:11. Umaga was on the offensive for the first several minutes. At just after six minutes, he applied a nerve hold and Kennedy looked dead. He was able to recover before submitting… [C]

[Q5] Kennedy was able to fight back and score some impressive offense in between avoiding nearfalls. After almost hitting the Mic Check, Umaga countered it into a Samoan Spike for the win…

Twill’s Two Cents: Good match. With this match and the Hardy vs. Hardy match later, WWE gave away two PPV singles matches tonight.

Jim Ross plugged Slim Jim’s before introducing Edge’s new commercial. I wonder if that was a conflict of interest given Ross sells jerky himself. Edge’s commercial took place in a DMV and his “spicy side” raised hell…[C]

The wedding planner worked on the cake up on the stage. Ross said he hoped he would never have to use her services…

Twill’s Two Cents: Why is the wedding planner getting so much attention and camera time? Hmmm….

[Q6] 7. The Miz and John Morrison defeated Jesse and Festus in a non-title match in 3:53. Festus dominated the action before tagging Jesse in. Festus hit his finisher on the floor on Morrison. Jesse and Miz traded offense in the ring but Miz was able to hit the Reality Check for the win… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Basic Jesse and Festus formula match and it was nice to see the champions get a win for a change. Not sure what any of the challengers in the tag title match at the PPV did to earn the opportunity.

Highlights aired of the JBL and Cena ending from Monday Night Raw. Matt and Jeff Hardy came out together for their match. They threw the cake onto Chavo Guerrero… [C]

[Q7] 8. Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy in a non-title match ended in a no-contest in 4:30. After a slow start, both men picked up the pace and actually had a competitive match. Matt locked in a sweet chokehold when he was unable to hit the Twist of Fate but Jeff was able to break it. Jeff tried a Swanton but Matt avoided it. He hit a moonsault for a nearfall. La Familia hit the ring causing the referee to call for the bell. Edge speared both Matt and Jeff…

Twill’s Two Cents: They did not give away much but it was very good while it lasted. I am sure a Hardy vs. Hardy feud down the road will make WWE some big money.

Edge remained in the ring and told Vickie how much he loved her. He had a music video played and the two kissed in the ring…

[Q8] Triple H’s music hit and he made his first appearance on the show. Hunter sat down his belt and a gift. He said he had a history at WWE weddings but wanted to ensure everyone he was not secretly married to Vickie Guerrero. Hilarious. Triple H aired a video present for the happy couple.

There was a hidden camera showing Edge in a room. There was a knock at the door and he popped some breath mints. The wedding planner came into the room with Edge.

Twill’s Two Cents: Here we go.

Edge asked her what fragrance she was wearing and tried to rub her shoulder. She relented but Edge pretended to injure a muscle in his neck. He requested she rub his shoulders. She gave in and thought she was loosening it. Edge said it was getting stiffer. Classy.

Triple H stopped the tape and humorously made fun of Edge. La Familia came up to attack H but his wedding present contained a sledgehammer, which halted the attack right there. Upon restarting the tape, Edge was rubbing the back of the wedding planner. He tried to get her to take off her bra but she was not yet willing.

Edge was talking to the planner and he told her about a time he bought sexy lingerie for Vickie. The worker at the store told him to go to Lane Bryant instead. He said Vickie wore granny panties. Triple H stopped the tape again and pulled some panties out of his pocket. He said since Edge already had Vickie taken care of, he could park his car underneath these. Ouch.

Edge took of the planner’s glasses. He tried to kiss her but she pulled away. She finally gave in to Edge’s advances and they began to make out. Hunter could not control his laughter as everyone else looked shocked. Edge exited the ring and Vickie screamed at him. She told him she hated him and continued to scream as the show went off the air…

Twill’s Two Cents: Interesting segment. Triple H was hilarious and give WWE credit, this was definitely a creative way to end this wedding. We had not seen anything like this before at a wrestling wedding. Good stuff.
