7/18 Shore’s Smackdown Coverage: Edge and Vickie wedding reception, Triple H crashes the party and airs a scandalous video of Edge and the wedding planner
By Chris Shore Jul 18, 2008 - 09:23 PM

Smackdown on The CW Network
Taped on July 15 in Charlotte, N.C.

[Q1] A romantic video played showing highlights of Vickie and Edge’s history, including the events of last week, and announcing their wedding. The video cut to Edge and Vickie and wedding party in front of a minister with “Recorded Earlier” in the bottom of the screen. The minister completed the ceremony and Vickie and Edge kissed.

Shore’s Slant: Well color me surprised.

In the arena, Jim Ross welcomed us to Smackdown as Hawkins, Ryder, and Bam Neely in tuxes were ringside. JR announced that tonight was the wedding reception. Chavo was introduced as the best man, and Vickie and Edge were introduced as “together in public for the first time as man and wife.”

Chavo gave his toast and it was very sappy. Chavo said he couldn’t wait to celebrate with Edge on Sunday after he won the title. He presented his wedding gift, a fake WWE magazine cover showing him as champ after beating Triple H. Edge took the mic and said it was time to get the show going.

Suddenly, Finlay’s music hit and he and Hornswoggle made their way to the ring. After they got in the ring, Edge said he was tired of seeing them cheat each week. He said that Hawkins and Ryder wouldn’t fall for that. He announced himself as the special referee. Edge, Hawkins, and Ryder made their way to the ring in their tuxedos…

1. Curt Hawkins and Zach Ryder defeated Finlay and Hornswoggle with Edge as Special Guest Referee at 2:11. Edge was as impartial as you would expect. Edge speared Finlay and one of the twins covered for the win.

The live crowd was told to watch as Edge and Vickie had their first dance. The lights went dim and a guy and a girl sang a sappy ass song while they danced. Suddenly Big show came out and cut in. edge grabbed a mic and screamed to have the music cut. He said Show’s match was next but only Edge knew who his opponents were. He told Show to get in the ring. Show walked down the ramp clapping and laughing as his music hit…[C]

Shore’s Slant: I have been watching wrestling on TV for over two decades and that was the strangest 15 minutes I have ever seen. And this includes the Attitude Era years. The announcers plugged a new Fatal Four Way match at the Bash for the Tag Titles. Looks like Miz and Morrison might drop, hopefully for a singles push.

[Q2] Back from commercial and holy crap! Show is facing Kozlov. No, wait. He is facing Kozlov, MVP, Shelton Benjamin, and Khali. Oh come on…

2. Shelton Benjamin, MVP, Vladimir Kozlov, and the Great Khali fought the Big Show to a no contest at 1:54. Benjamin started out and he got thrown back. Benjamin tagged in MVP who tagged in Kozlov. Kozlov tried to hip toss Show but was pushed off. Khali tagged himself in and went after Show but got knocked down. Show cleared house but then the numbers game got him. The ref called for the bell, and Kozlov hit his headbut to the body to put show down. Khali hit the Khali bomb and the four stomped on him some more before leaving. Edge and Vickie clapped on the ramp…

JR plugged Hardy vs Hardy tonight…[C]

Shore’s Slant: That was really pointless. It must be a “get everybody on TV” night as several stars are used up early. Edge and Vickie are looking real good right now. It must be a setup for Taker’s return or for Triple H to wreck the show.

[Q3] Back from commercial, Vickie was in the ring and drew mad heat, shocker. Vickie was trying to announce that she was throwing the bouquet. Suddenly Michelle McCool attacked Natalya at ringside. Hawkins and Ryder chased McCool off. Vickie threw the bouquet and Cherry ended up with it. She said that Cherry won the right to face Vickie in a match after she faced Natalya…

3. Natalya defeated Cherry in 0:30. Cherry got in the ring confused. Natalya drug her down, mounted her, and rubbed the bouquet all over the place. She locked in the Sharpshooter for the win.

Shore’s Slant: Well that was, wait, hold on.

4. Vickie defeated Cherry in 0:03. Vickie called for the bell, she covered and won. Vickie celebrated as the show went to commercial…[C]

Shore’s Slant: I got nothing. Honestly.

Back from commercial and Jimmy Wang Yang made his way to the ring. Brian Kendrick came out with a huge black guy who the announcers said was named Ezekiel. Kendrick has been completely repackaged as a cocky heel. No setup at all there. Strange begets strange.

5. Brian Kendrick defeated Jimmy Wang Yang at 4:47. Yang was in control early. When Kendrick was in control, he was more power methodical than high flying. Yang retook control about 3:45 and had a couple of near falls. Yang was distracted by Ezekiel and Kendrick hit his finisher for the win…

[Q4] Backstage, Edge was stopped by a guy who had a huge box of Slim Jims. Edge called him the Slim Jim guy and he thanked Edge for inviting him to the wedding. He said he wanted to give Edge his wedding gift and handed him the big ass box of Slim Jims. Edge said their catch phrase and then hurried off…

Shore’s Slant: I like the repackage of Kendrick, but WTF with just springing it on us? The match was OK, certainly TV worthy. Dude, a Slim Jim commercial by using it as a wedding gift? I think all those drugs I did are catching up to me. This is the strangest show I have ever seen. Nothing is connected.

Back from commercial, the wedding party continued to celebrate. Kennedy’s music hit and he came to the ring and did his bit. He is definitely a face now as he played to the home crowd, calling it “North Cakalaky” (336 represent baby!) and encouraged the crowd to do his intro with him.

6. Umaga defeated Mr. Kennedy at 13:10. All Umaga early, power move on power move. Umaga locked in a nerve hold for close to three minutes before Kennedy started to come back. He broke free and came off the rope to be dropped by a Samoan drop…[C][Q5]

Back from commercial and Umaga was still in control. Kennedy hit a couple of fists and tried to body slam Umaga but collapsed under his weight. Umaga got a two count and locked on the nerve pinch again. Umaga went to the second rope for a headbutt but missed. Umaga tried a corner splash but missed and hit his face. Kennedy tried the Mic Check but Umaga flicked him off and hit the Samoan Spike for the win…

Post match, JR and Foley introduced Edge’s new Slim Jim commercial. Pretty funny. They plugged Hardy vs Hardy again…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Decent match that makes it look like Kennedy just lost as opposed to getting his ass kicked for 12 minutes, which is actually what happened. I’m not sure where this feud is going, but it could be OK if developed more.

[Q6] Back from commercial, Edge and Vickie continued to celebrate as Miz and Morrison made their way to the ring. JR said that nobody loved Miz and Morrison more than each other. Foley said they were really into each other. Wow, Mick, unfortunate choice of words…

7. John Morrison and The Miz defeated Jesse and Festus at 3:57. Morrison and Jesse started out. For those of you keeping score at home, we have now seen all four tag teams in the fatal four way in action tonight. Festus beat the hell out of Miz and Morrison when in, but Miz hit the Reality Check on Jesse for the win…[C]

Shore’s Slant: The match was there to remind us that these guys are in a feud, albeit a new one. Or a short one. I swear there is no thought for the long term product right now. Hardly anything goes on for more than two weeks.

Back from commercial and a video recap aired of Raw and the Cena/JBL garbage. Boy am I glad I don’t cover Raw or Powell might have fired me for my cussing rant after the show went off. I know my wife blushed…

Back ringside and the announce team ran through the PPV matches. The Hardy’s were announced in a brother vs brother match by “order of the bride and groom.” The Hardy’s came out together to Jeff’s music and grabbed the wedding cake and smashed it on Chavo leaving the rest of the Fam Damly pissed on the stage…[C][Q7]

8. The Hardys fought to a no-ontest at 4:34. The Hardy’s touched fists to start. JR and Foley talked about the North Carolina and holders of the US Championship. Foley mentioned Magnum T.A. was back stage (HUGE pop from me.) Matt and Jeff went back and forth early before Matt went for the Twist of Fate and Jeff countered and hit his sit down corner dropkick. Jeff hit the Side Effect on Matt (you read that right) and went for the Swanton but Matt moved. Matt hit a moonsault for a two count. The Fam Damily jumped in at this point and beat down the Hardys. Edge hit a spear on both…[C]

Shore’s Slant: The match was fun while it lasted. It makes sense for the ending as both men are important to the company right now and you don’t want to diminish either one at this point. About the Magnum T.A. thing. That’s so cool because the Great American Bash was originally created by Jim Crockett Promotions in the old NWA and it was actually a series of events, not just one. Magnum T.A. and Nikita Koloff wrestled in a best of seven series for the U.S. Championship that is single handedly the best feud in the history of wrestling and I’ll challenge anyone on it.

[Q8] Back from commercial and the Fam Damily is in the ring. Edge started out by saying that your wedding day really is the happiest day in your life. He said he loved Vickie so much. He said he had the Smackdown video team put together a video for her. So 1960’s music played as a video of Edge and Vickie together in arenas and outside in parks and whatnot. Lots of the video was kissing. Ugh.

“Time to play the game!” rang out as the crowd popped huge. Triple H walked out with the title belt and a long white box with a big red bow on it. He set the belt and box down. He started by saying the he could tell by their faces they were not happy to see him. He said despite his history, he was not here to announce he was secretly married to Vickie. He said he was there to celebrate their love. He said he had a video that showed Edge’s true love for Vickie.

A video showing the date as 7/17/08 and Edge was meeting with the wedding planner. It played for a while and Hunter interrupted and apologized and said to skip to the good stuff. Edge made a move on the wedding planner and then faked a back spasm and the planner started massaging him. Back to ringside and Hunter interrupted the video again. Edge sent the Fam Damily to get Hunter who announced his second gift and pulled the sledge hammer out of the box. They all stopped and Hunter played more video.

This time, Edge was massaging the wedding planner and coming on to her some more. He mentioned her bra and said he went to Fredrick’s of Hollywood and asked for Vickie’s size. He said he was sent to Lane Bryant (which my wife assures me is a shop for “larger” women). He cracked on how big her underwear is as the planner laughed. Hunter interrupted again and said that he was upset because now gift number three was ruined. He pulled out a pair of panties that the dotnet staff could all get into at the same time. He said he could always park his car under them. He ran the last video.

Edge put his best move on the planner and gave her a kiss. She pulled away quickly, paused, and then attacked Edge sexually. Hunter smiled as he walked off with the belt and sledge hammer. In the ring, Vickie went, well, bat shit. She attacked Edge, screamed, screamed, and screamed some more. It was quite the episode. Edge left the ring and backed up the ramp as the show went off…

Shore’s Slant: Fun closing segment but no wrestling the last 20 minutes of the show. It will be interesting to see how this plays out on Sunday. Overall the show was just weird. It was like a stream of consciousness with real people. I can’t wait to see how all this play’s out. Rich Twilling and I should be on with a Water Cooler in a couple of days about the PPV so look for it. Until next time.
