10/7 Barnett's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: The Big Show returns, Alberto Del Rio vs. Sin Cara, Beth Phoenix and Randy Orton in action
Oct 7, 2011 - 07:01 PM

By Jake Barnett

WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped 10/4 in Biloxi, MS.

[Q1] A video package aired that showed Hunter's struggles at COO, and led into the walk out on Monday. It was quite sympathetic to him.

Teddy Long was shown backstage. He ended a phone conversation with Teddy Long, and Zach Ryder walked up. Teddy said Triple H didn't want another walk out, so he was leaving Smackdown in Teddy Long's hands. Teddy said Raw's loss is Smackdown's gain, and they needed to get to work.

Josh Mathews then welcomed us to the building and the announce team plugged the Big Show's return tonight. Vickie Guerrero was is the ring with the Superstars that led the walk out on Monday. Christian grabbed the mic and welcomed the fans to the walk out. He said he questioned Triple H's motives, his lack of respect, and everything else. He said because of his actions, the entire roster was inspired.

Dolph Zigger then grabbed the mic and said the walk out was because of all of them. He said Triple H leadership was ineffective and it always had been. He then said it was the smartest decision of his life. David Otunga then got on the mic, and said Triple H's actions had fostered an unsafe work environment, and they had no choice but to walk out. He said Triple H gave up authority of Smackdown to Teddy Long, and that was a good step, but it wasn't enough. They would walk out of all events if he didn't resign on Monday.

Wade Barrett then took the mic and said this was all Triple H's fault, and he reiterated that he needed to design. Cody Rhodes then said that Triple H's ego had grown so large that no paper bag could cover it. He told the crowd to shut up several times. He then said a united front was warranted to remove Triple H, and said this was really the responsibility of one man. Swagger grabbed the mic and demanded we show respect, and Alberto Del Rio's music hit and he headed to the ring.

Del Rio got some boos to start, and told the crowd that when the WWE Champion talks, the crowd should shut up and listen. He said despite Triple H's sick and demented ways, he survived Hell in a Cell. He said that because of his influence, he inspired the walk out, and said that they will not return to work until Triple H steps down. He then said he was on Smackdown because he was there to compete, and to show the entire world what they will miss next Monday on Raw.

Teddy came out and said if all they were going to do blab, the next people that walk out would be the audience. He told Christian and Rhodes that if he were them, he would go backstage and prepare for his main event match against Orton and Sheamus. He then told Del Rio that his match was next, and he would grant his request to face Sin Cara. Del Rio then said he was the only Mexican sensation, and he was better than any American as well...[c]

Barnett's Brief: The crowd was not hot for that segment at all. I don't know if it was a lack of interest in the walk out angle or in the talent, but they were pretty quiet for everybody but Rhodes and Del Rio. Del Rio didn't even get much of a reaction for insulting Americans, which should tell you something. I didn't really think the mic work was bad, but I didn't really feel any passion from anybody out there.

[Q2] Ricardo Rodriguez introduced Alberto Del Rio as we got back. Original Sin Cara then made his way out to a decent pop.

1. Alberto Del Rio defeated Sin Cara at 3:24 Sin Cara hit a nice hurricanrana and back elbow early. Del Rio then hit a nice german suplex for a two count a few seconds later. Del Rio kept Sin Cara grounded with holds and strikes and dropped an elbow for another two count. The pace was slow early, until Sin Cara hit a top rope head scissors and some kicks to Del Rio's knees. He then hit a floatover DDT for a two count. Sin Cara went for a top rope move, but ended up landing flat on his face.

Del Rio hit an armbreaker and locked in his cross armbar for the submission victory. Del Rio left up the ramp and celebrated, and a moment later the dark Sin Cara character came out with his music and assaulted Blue Sin Cara. He hit a hammerlock suplex and a top rope senton splash. Blue Sin Cara writhed in pain.

The announce crew put over the walk out again, and said he wouldn't be at Raw Monday.

Matt Striker interviewed Air Boom backstage and asked about the Walk Out. They made up some convoluted story about how it isn't Triple H's fault, but it was a culmination of “everything”, whatever that means. They said they would only be on Smackdown until he resigned...[c]

Barnett's Brief: I am just not into this walk out story line. What a mess. Nobody can even articulate with any passion why they walked out. It's like watching a bunch of cranky kids staging a walk out at school over a mistake in the yearbook. The Del Rio vs. Sin Cara match didn't have a ton of action, but what was there was solid. The dueling Sin Cara's thing still sucks.

[Q3] Air Boom made their way out to their new combined music, but they got assaulted from behind by Ziggler and Swagger on the ramp. They laid them both out and Swagger stomped on Bourne on the outside. Nobody on the announce team spoke about how illegal and despicable this is. Ziggler hit the Zig Zag on the floor on Bourne...[c]

The ref called for the bell as we got back...

2. Dolph and Swagger defeated Air Boom at 2:53 Kofi was fired up early, but quickly got up ended by Swagger. Ziggler tagged in and continued to work over Kofi. Bourne has not climbed onto the apron after the ringside assault. Kofi rebounded off the ropes and hit Zigger with a clotheslines, and as he climbed to the corner Bourne tagged in after a miraculous recovery. He hit some high knees, but grabbed his neck after he landed. Ziggler hit a neckbreaker and tagged in Swagger, who hit his Powerbomb for the win.

The announce team plugged the tag main event...[c]

Barnett's Brief: Good heel tactics here. The match was nothing, but the pre-match attack and the finish were well done.

[Q4] Beth Phoenix and Natalya made their way out to Beth's music. A video played of Kelly as she lost her mind and assaulted Beth Phoenix in they weak way only she can. Alicia Fox slut walked her way to the ring next.

3. Beth Phoenix defeated Alicia Fox at 0:38 They fought in the corner for about 20 seconds, and then Beth hit her finisher for the win? Ok....

After the match, Natalya locked Alicia in her submission and Beth demanded she scream, and she complied. Awesome. After the assault, Nattie put a broach or something in her hair.

The announce team wondered where Teddy Long was during all of this bad behavior in the ring. Mathews then introduced the video package that spoke about the Big Show and Mark Henry feud. It was the same well done video we saw on Monday...[c]

Barnett's Brief: I understand the need to build up Beth after Kelly kicked her ass on Monday, but a 38 second match? I mean, ok, but why couldn't they do that backstage? Then they could have given them a couple of minutes and not had to worry about entrances.

Big Show's music hit and he came out to a good pop. He was also wearing a WMD shirt and hat, which must be his new merch. Show hit the ring and grabbed a mic.

He yelled “Damn!” and said it was good to be back. He told the crowd that they were awesome. He said he watched the footage of Mark Henry at Money in the Bank, and he asked himself what kind of sane person would do that. He then showed the footage of Henry breaking his ankle. Show said he thought he was infallible. He then said he was humbled by Mark Henry, and started to cry. He said Mark Henry reached into his chest and tore his heart out.

He said simple everyday things he couldn't do anymore. He couldn't put on pants or shoes or even play with his dogs. He said he took stuff for granted and couldn't do that anymore. He continued to cry, and said that he watched the video of Henry at home to fire him up to get back. He said he is better and stronger than he has ever been. He then said he would repay Mark Henry in pain ten times over.

[Q5] He continued and said Henry is on a roll, but it was a downhill roll and he was waiting at the bottom to stop him. He said he would take from Henry what validates his career, and that is the World's Heavyweight Championship. He said he held it before at 23 years old, and he would settle for nothing less than facing Henry one on one. He then demanded that Henry come out and give him a title shot.

Henry's music hit and he walked out on to the top of the ramp. He told Big Show that there's been a lot of changes since he left 4 months ago. He said he would catch him up, and spoke about all the people who got entered into the Hall of Pain. He said most importantly, he beat Randy Orton to become the World Heavyweight Champion. He then asked Show what he's done? He said he had a 4 month Vacation provided by Mark Henry.

Henry then said he'd let Show know about when and if he'd ever get his title shot. He said it's gonna come on Mark Henry time, the World Heavyweight Champion's time. Show then said he wants an answer tonight, or he'd take out Henry and break his ankle.

Backstage, Matt Striker interviewed Orton. He said he wasn't going to beg for another match. Striker then asked about the walk out, and Orton said if he had a problem with Triple H, he'd address it personally. He then said he doesn't follow groups because he doesn't play well with others. He then said Sheamus being his Tag Partner didn't bode well for him, and even less so for Rhodes and Christian...[c]

Barnett's Brief: Show's promo was boring, but Henry was very good there. Show didn't really work up any real emotion despite move crying, and only got the crowds attention by yelling towards the end. Henry was cocky and came off like a badass, and it worked for him. I didn't mind Orton's promo, he definitely needed a little character definition.

A Brodus Clay vignette aired. I look forward to his re-debut.

Jinder Mahal was in the ring and spoke some Punjabi until Ezekiel Jackson made his way out. Zeke shushed Jinder, but he continued ranting. Zeke didn't say anything, but finally snapped and punched Jinder in the face. The ref separated them and then rang the bell.

[Q6] 4. Ezekiel Jackson defeated Jinder Mahal at 1:56. Zeke shoved Jinder down to start, but he was able to recover quickly. Ezekiel Jackson worked some power moves, and went for a torture rack early but couldn't get him up. Jinder hit some strikes and an elbow drop for a two count. He worked a front facelock on Zeke until Zeke powered out and hit a big series of Body Slams. After the third bodyslam, he put Mahal up in the torture rack for the submission victory.

Zeke grabbed a mic and shushed Mahal again and left the ring all smiles. The announce team plugged the Main Event and Henry responding to Show's challenge.

Barnett's Brief: Well, this was a bit of filler, but not bad filler. Zeke is good in small doses, and this was one of those moments. Mahal is going nowhere, fast, unfortunately.

Backstage Teddy Long expected Aksana but Johnny Ace walked in. Ace said he supported Long, and he wanted him to know he could count on him, and that it was important that he keep Smackdown under control.

The announce team was shown, but a moment later Hornswoggle popped out from under the ring and dragged Booker into the ring. Hornswoggle asked Booker to do the spinaroonie, and he obliged. Booker then motioned for Hornswoggle to do it himself, and then he did.

Christian and Rhodes then made their entrances, and Booker and Hornswoggle cleared the ring...[c]

Sheamus came out first for the babyface team, followed by Orton.

[Q7] 5. Randy Orton and Sheamus defeated Christian and Rhodes at 8:36 Christian and Sheamus started, and Sheamus went right to work. Christian escaped and tagged in Rhodes. Rhodes got tossed and skinned the cat back in, only to get the crap beat out of him again. Sheamus did his forearm smashed to the chest, and his apron running knee lift. Christian distracted Sheamus briefly, which allowed Rhodes to get in some offense. He hit a russian leg sweep and some strikes, and then both men tagged.

Orton hit a powerslam on Christian, followed by a back body drop. Orton mounted Christian in the corner and did the ten punches. He then setup Christian for his second rope DDT and nailed it. He telegraphed an RKO, and Rhodes distracted him so Christian could roll out of the ring. Orton gave chase and Rhodes met him on the outside. Orton threw Rhodes into the post, but Christian caught up with him and kicked him in the face from the apron...[c]

Christian worked a chin lock, and Orton fought out only to eat a back elbow. Rhodes tagged in and punched Orton repeatedly while he laid on the mat. Christian tagged back in, and Orton mounted a brief comeback before Christian hit a spinebuster. Christian lined up a spear, but Orton kicked him in the gut and tagged in Sheamus. Rhodes then also tagged in and ate a bunch of Sheamus's offense.

Sheamus looked to put away Rhodes, but Christian distracted. Orton tagged himself in and hit an RKO on Rhodes for the three count.

Barnett's Brief: Good action for a TV match. There was some history here among all 4 guys and it worked. They definitely need to develop something new for all of them though, and I'm not sure what that is yet.

The announce team then introduced the walk out video again, and the same video that opened the show played again at full length. The announce team then explained that Raw would happen Monday, but they didn't know what it would be

Mark Henry then made his way out...[c]

[Q8] Henry said we all know who he is. He said he's the strongest man in the world and he fears no man. He said that he too is infallible. He said as far as Big Show's title shot is concerned, his answer is no. Big Show then charged the ring and backed Henry into the corner and started punching Henry in the head. Half a dozen trainers held Big Show back, but he broke free and speared Henry in the center of the ring. Show pushed off about 48 trainers and started choke slamming them. Henry escaped to the outside and started leaving.

Show didn't seem to notice and kept beating the crap out of WWE trainers. He hit the WMD punch on one while he stared down Henry to make sure he knew he was serious. He yelled at Henry to give him his answer, but Henry was defiant and said no and held up his title. Henry walked towards the back, but Big Show chased and continued the beat down on Henry. Show attempted to throw Henry at the barricade, but Henry reversed and tossed show. Henry took apart the announce table and pulled show over to the announce area. He went to hit the WSS on Show, but Show reversed and choke slammed Henry through the announce table.

Show screamed at Henry while he lay motionless on the floor. Show grabbed a chair and placed Henry's ankle in it. Show then grabbed the ring steps and dragged them over towards the destroyed table. Teddy Long then made his way out and said he's got his shot, but not if he breaks Henry's ankle. Show thought about it for a moment and climbed off the steps. He headed toward the back, but changed his mind and grabbed the chair off of Henry's ankle and clubbed him over the back with it.

Show then told Henry he would take care of him after he took his title. Henry stirred and kicked the chair to close the show. A promo for Raw aired for the last minute of the show.

Barnett's Brief: Not sure why you have to put the clamps on Henry's heat here. They didn't need to give this much away this early in the feud, and Henry both taking a beating and resuing the challenge from the Big Show seem very out of character for him. I'm not a huge fan of the finish, but I'm willing to let it play out before I get too down on it. Obviously they needed to establish Big Show as a threat for this return to work, and they definitely accomplished that.
