10/6 Kester's WWE Superstars Live Coverage Review: Alex Riley vs. JTG, Ted Dibiase vs. Tyson Kidd, and Michael McGillicutty vs. Percy Watson
Oct 6, 2011 - 04:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

WWE Superstars on WWE.com
Taped earlier in Biloxi, Mississippi and Lafayette, Louisiana.

1. Alex Riley defeated JTG in 4:28. JTG took control at first, but Riley quickly regained the upper hand. Riley hit is A-Bomb elbow early.

JTG regained control and hit an arm-flip into a neckbreaker before locking in a rest hold. Cool move. Riley hit an STO out of nowhere and began to pump the crowd up with a series of clotheslines and huge spinebuster on JTG.

Riley hit his Impaler DDT and scored an excellent near fall. JTG returned to his feet and hit a lethal injection for a near fall of his own. Moments later, Riley hit his Early Dismissal firemen's cutter for the win… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Great opening match for the show. JTG has grown considerably in his in-ring work as-of-late, and both men worked at a great pace throughout the match. It's difficult to make near falls mean anything in such a short match, but these two did a great job of making that happen.

Back from the break, the announcers sent us to footage of the end of HIAC and the Miz and R-Truth's attack… [C]

Michael McGillicutty came out to some new music, quickly followed by Percy Watson.

2. Michael McGillicutty defeated Percy Watson in 3:37. McGillicutty punked Watson early with superior mat wrestling, but Watson quickly caught him with a suplex. McGillicutty set up I the corner and caught Watson when he pursued him.

McGillicutty hit a neckbreaker and locked in a rest hold. Watson fought out and hit McGillicutty with an enziguri. He followed up with a few European uppercuts and a couple of dropkicks. Watson went for his splash, but McGillicutty got his knees up. Moments later, McGillicutty hit the McGillicutter running neckbreaker for the win… [C]

Ryan's Rant: That match was ok, but it lacked the high gear pace that the first one did to make up for the short match. Ultimately, it resulted in a forgettable thruway between these two.

3. AJ defeated Tamina in 3:49. Tamina took control immediately and reversed a wheelbarrow attempt from AJ into a hotshot on the ropes. Tamina then locked in a rest hold that targeted AJ's neck. She tried to fight out, only to be cut off by Tamina and put right back in the same hold.

AJ tried to fight out again, but Tamina dismantled her with knee drops to AJ's neck before returning to the hold for a third time. Tamina let go of the hold quickly, though, and tried to soften up AJ with a few leg drops before going for the Superfly Splash. She missed, however, and AJ hit a reverse DDT for the win… [C]

Ryan's Rant: AJ can sell better than any other woman on the roster. Still, that match was far too much rest hold for my liking, and AJ won with a move she's never used as a finisher before. It just made Tamina look like she could be dominant, but she wasn't tough enough to take even a single move from her opponent.

Ted DiBiase made his entrance with a huge smile on his face, and the announcers talked about the DiBiase Posse, which is apparently a group of fans DiBiase hang out with prior to the show. Interesting.

4. Ted DiBiase defeated Tyson Kidd in 3:53. DiBiase started off in control and targeted Tyson Kidd's arm. Kidd quickly slid out of the ring in an attempt to bait DiBiase. His efforts proved successful, as he caught DiBiase with a back kick when he followed Kidd to ringside.

Back in the ring, Kidd worked DiBiase over with a series of punches before choking him on the ropes. Tyson locked in a rest hold and the crowd rallied behind DiBiase. Tyson let go of him and taunted DiBiase to good heat, and DiBiase popped up and started his offense.

Tyson attempted a roll-up, but DiBiase reversed it. When Tyson kicked out and stood up, DiBiase hit Dream Street for the 1-2-3… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Good match between these two. It was short, but both wrestlers managed to connect with the crowd and gave a good performance.

The remainder of the show consisted of a video package covering Triple H losing control of the WWE, and the walkout from Monday Night raw set to overly depressing music.

Ryan's Rant: I respect the production team's efforts, but no maker out much make-up you put on that big, it is still a pig.

Overall, this was a good return episode of WWE Superstars. The main event showed that DiBiase and Kidd can be an asset to WWE as they can connect with the crowd, but WWE just needs to find something to do with them. I like the DiBiase Posse idea, despite the name, as DiBiase would get over quickly with a few brief vignettes on one of the main shows with him hanging out with fans outside of the arena.

I like the fact that WWE Superstars is back in North America, but I hope that the practice of filling the show with multiple lengthy video packages goes away going forward. The previous incarnation of the show managed to deliver a series of great matches will little to no fluff or filler, and I think that no frills wrestling product will be more beneficial to WWE than a catch-up show filled with short, throwaway contests.
