10/5 Kester's WWE NXT Live Coverage Review: The season that will never end moves to Wednesdays
Oct 5, 2011 - 03:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

WWE NXT on WWE.com
Taped earlier in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The show kicked off with Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks making their way to the ring. Each man sat in a corner and grabbed a microphone. Hawkins said that no one knows what's going on anymore, including on NXT, and they were going to take advantage of that.

Hawkins apologized to the "dozens" of people that watch the show every week, and said that they would not be getting the likes of Titus O'Neill on the show. He said tonight was the Hawkins and reks show. Reks spoke and said he betted that the entire audience was asking why they were on the show last week. He then patted himself on the back for walking out on Triple H, and the crowd responded with some good heat.

Reks said he was angry with Hunter passing out pushes to second generation wrestlers that squandered their opportunities, just like the Usos did. Cue the Uso's music, and the Uso brothers made their way to the ring wearing street clothes. One of the Usos already had a mic, and he said that all they were trying to do was earn their own reputation, just like their family members that came before them did.

He told the heels that they earned everything they had thus far, and he said they earned the right to entertain the citizens of Biloxi, which got the cheap pop from the crowd. He offered to give the heels an opportunity tonight, and he said the system may not break Hawkins and Reks, but tonight the Usos will. The Usos then pounced on the heels, and sent both men to the floor.

The announcers hyped a replay of the walkout from Monday Night Raw… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Reks really needs to stay silent. His voice does not match his tough look at all, and he lost a lot of the mystique he had going for him simply by speaking. I can get behind an Usos/Hawkins and Reks feud, and I love the idea of an undercard tag feud. I was a bit annoyed when Hawkins mentioned how few people watch this show. It's one thing to be conscientious of the fact that the show is terrible, but it's another thing entirely to take the piss out of those that do follow the show. The superstars involved should be putting on their bets efforts for the most loyal of WWE's fanbase, not mocking them for their patronage.

1. Derrick Bateman (w/Maxine) defeated Titus O'Neill in 5:07. Titus started the match dominating with a series of chops and a running shoulder block. He did not control the match for long, however, as he and Bateman started trading offensive maneuvers.

Bateman hit a huge dropkick and scored a near fall. Bateman targeted Titus's back with a few shots and locked in a rest hold. Titus battled out and hit a fallaway slam on Bateman. Titus revved up the crowd and started attacking Bateman in the corner before hitting a huge slam. Titus began to bark and tried to go to the top rope only to be cut off by Maxine.

Bateman hit a chop block on Titus and followed up with an inverted DDT to pick up the victory.

After the match, Maxine and Bateman celebrated by snogging in the middle of the ring to a chorus of boos from the crowd... [C]

Ryan's Rant: That match was a snooze. The actions never picked up, and the guys seemed to be just performing spots rather than working a match with any sort of story behind it. Bateman and Maxine seem to have some pretty good heat, but it's hard to take the man seriously. Similarly, any enthusiasm I have for Titus evaporates when his terrible music plays or when he decides to bark. I don't mean to just bury the guys here as they both have some good potential, but they did not put that on display here.

The Raw Rebound of the walkout on Triple H played, complete with sad Titanic sinking-type music.

Backstage, Yoshi Tatsu encountered JTG and Darren Young, who mocked Tatsu for his make-up. Tatsu said it was not make-up, but it was a symbol of his pride. Young asked him if he was tough now, and the two heels continued to mock Tatsu.

Yoshi went to his make-up area to discover his face paint was gone, and he started to get angry… [C]

2. Yoshi Tatsu defeated JTG (w/Darren Young) in 4:16. Tatsu tried to attack JTG, but the man kept running out of the ring and hiding behind Darren Young, who got promptly kicked in the skull. JTG seized the opportunity and attacked Tatsu.

JTG locked in a rest hold and the crowd rallied behind Tatsu, but JTG continued his dominance. Moments later, Tatsu attempted to battle out, but JTG threw him in the corner and hit the Mug Shot. He got a near fall and went for the move again, but Tatsu caught him with a kick. Tatsu followed with a quick combination of kicks and went to the top rope.

Tatsu hit his spinning back kick and scored the win.

Backstage, Daniel Bryan was shown walking through the locker room… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Daniel Bryan is wrestling on this show? Way to take care of your MitB winner, WWE. This math was slightly better than the first since there seemed to be an actual story involved, but the match was simply too short to really amount to anything.

3. Daniel Bryan defeated Heath Slater in 5:43. The two men worked some great chain wrestling to start.

Daniel Bryan attempted to lock in a surfboard stretch, but couldn't get it, so he jumped, damaging both of Slater's knees. Moments later, Slater hit a clothesline out of nowhere and took control. Slater hit a snap suplex for a two-count. On commentary, Korpela mentioned that Bryan would never attack anyone like the Miz and R-Truth did. Apparently WWE has already forgotten about the Nexus.

Bryan came back with a flying knee and attempted to set up for his missile dropkick, but he was quickly cut off by Slater. Slater threw Bryan into the corner, who bounded offed the ropes and hit a flying clothesline. Bryan followed with a running dropkick in the corner for a near fall.

When both men stood up, Slater hit a flapkjack. Slater tried a Back Suplex, but Bryan rolled through and locked in the Regal Stretch to score the submission victory… [C]

The Usos had pyro added to their Haka entrance.

4. Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks beat The Uso Brothers in 4:45. The Usos took control early and worked a quick tag to keep Hawkins off of his feet. Reks blind tagged into the match and started to beta down Jimmy Uso.

The heels worked rapid tags to keep Jimmy off of his feet and they continued to pile on the damage. Jimmy eventually managed to tag in Jey, who hit the ring with a fury. Jey hit Hawkins with a wrecking ball for a near fall and Hawkins battled back with a suplex.

The Usos fought back and hit their tag-team Samoan Drop, but Reks broke the pin. Jey hit Hawkins with a superkick and attempted to follow with the Superfly Splash, but Hawkins knocked him off the top rope and followed with the heat-Seeking Elbow drop for the win.

Ryan's Rant: Good tag action from these two teams, which is exactly what I expected. I'd love to see this program continued in front of a larger viewing audience.

Overall, this show started off well with the opening segment, fell apart with the first two matches, but managed to redeem itself, no pun intended, by the end of the show. I can't say this edition of NXT was really entertaining, but it at least had some good actions if you can manage to wade through the dregs of the early matches.
