9/27 Kester's WWE NXT Live Coverage Review: The thirtieth straight week of season five with still no end in sight
Sep 27, 2011 - 09:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

WWE NXT on WWE.com
Taped earlier in St. Louis, Missouri.

The show opened with JTG and Darren Young making their way to the ring. Once there, JTG grabbed a microphone and called all of the St. Louis fans haters, only to receive cheers. JTG reminded everyone that NXT was going on for thirty weeks thus far, and JTG said Darren Young was going to be WWE's next break-out star.

JTG talked about his and Darren Young's recent victories and said he and Young should go for the tag belts after Darren wins NXT. At that point, the Uso Brothers made their way to the ring wearing street clothes and took issue with JTG's claim that he and Darren Young were WWE's best tag team.

A quick video showing the Uso Bother's recent attacks on JTG and Young was shown. The Usos talked about their lineage and declared themselves to be future tag team champions. JTG said that he grew up watching wrestling and a fan yelled, "Chad was better!" JTG told him to stop hatin'. Funny.

JTG said that he saw the Uso's family and he said they were nothing. The Usos charged, and the heel fled the ring… [C]

Ryan's Rant: JTG's mic work leaves much to be desired, but the Usos were strong here. I just hope they get a legitimate push on one of the main shows.

1. Jinder Mahal defeated Yoshi Tatsu in 6:06. Yoshi took control early by outpacing Mahal and landing some stiff kicks and chops. Yoshi locked in a side headlock and held it until Mahal broke it with a back suplex.

Mahal dominated with a series of suplexes and a clothesline. He remained in control for the majority of the contest.

Eventually, Tatsu fought back when Mahal charged in the corner and Tatsu caught him with a kick. Yoshi proceeded to light Mahal up with kicks and went for a crucifix rollup that Mahal reversed into a Samoan drop. Mahal put Tatsu on the top rope but Tatsu battled out.

Yoshi flew and tried to hit his spinning back kick, but Mahal moved and hit his full-nelson slam for the win… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Decent action throughout, but I can't help but get the feeling this does nothing for either man. Tatsu's new look is an improvement over his old one, but he doesn’t seem to have changed much with his in-ring work, which just isn't that exciting for someone that is supposed to be a high flyer.

Back from commercial, an advert aired for the Hell in a Cell PPV featuring all of the spots you'll never see in a PG Hell in a Cell match.

Backstage, Hornswoggle was walking backstage holding a letter that he handed to Titus, who was standing next to AJ. The letter was a love note that ended with Hornswoggle dumping AJ because he was moving to Smackdown. AJ questioned if Hornswoggle knew that she was on Smackdown… [C]

2. Tyson Kidd beat Percy Watson in 4:09. Percy controlled the early going , but Tyson quickly took control when he kicked Percy's legs out from underneath him and followed that up with a slingshot leg drop.

Tyson locked in a rest hold and screamed while the ref asked Percy if he wanted to continue. Percy eventually fought out and hit some quick offense in the form of a drop kick and a back drop. Percy hit a huge splash for a near fall.

Tyson battled back and hit a fisherman neckbreaker followed by a springboard elbow drop for the win.

Backstage, Matt Striker questioned Jinder Mahal about the Great Khali, and Mahal cut a quick promo half in Punjabi and half in English that basically said he didn't need Khali, and he was the only person that matters. He said tonight is his return to greatness.

Ryan's Rant: Tyson Kidd gets under my skin. He shows flashes of brilliance but kills his momentum with unneeded rest hold spots. The fact that Mahal already needs a return to greatness after debuting a few months ago is a testament to WWE's inability to take care of young talent.

3. The Uso Brothers defeated JTG and Darren Young in 11:20. JTG and Jey started the match. Jey hit a northern lights suplex early and got a two-count. JTG fought back and tagged in Young. Young distracted the referee while JTG attacked Jey. The heels proceeded to work quick tags to wear down Jey.

Jey managed to leapfrog JTG at one point to get the hot tag to his brother, Jimmy, who entered the match on fire. Jimmy tore into Young and JTG, but the heels managed to get the better of them when Young hit Jimmy with a back suplex on the ring apron… [C]

Back from commercial, the heels were in firm control of Jimmy Uso and hit a double suplex. JTG proceeded to lock in a rest hold. Jimmy fought out and attempted to get to his corner, but JTG cut him off and tagged Young. Young continued the assault on Jimmy's back and received several near falls.

Eventually, Jimmy managed hit a Samoan drop on JTG and get the hot tag to Jey, and it was Jey's turn to demolish the heels with rapid offense. Jey hit a wrecking ball and got a two count but JTG broke the count. Both Uso brothers hit a superkick on a heel and Jey tagged Jimmy in so he could hit the Superfly Splash on Young for the win.

After the match, Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks attacked the Uso brothers and left them lying on the floor as the show faded out.

Ryan's Rant: Good tag match with plenty of solid work from JTG and Darren Young. Both Uso brothers made them look like stars when they sold for them and the finish of the match really got the crowd into the action. JTG really seems like he's the type of guy that needs to stay in tag matches to hide his shortcomings in the ring, but they did that well tonight.

Overall, this was a pretty good NXT to start my coverage of the show. There were no competitions in sight, little backstage shenanigans, and the majority of the in-ring work for entertaining. However, the biggest problem this show has is that everything involved with it feels so inconsequential. Few people see the show and everything that happens here seems to happen in some sort of WWE creative singularity as nothing that happens on these shows ever leads to anything on Raw or Smackdown. It's hard to invest in a show when it feels like the creators of the show can't even be bothered to do so.
