Sep 12, 2011 - 08:00 PM

By Chris Shore

WWE Raw on USA
Live from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Dot Net members will be listening to my member's exclusive audio review after the show. While you wait for it to post, be sure to check out my new book The Following Contest is a Dark Match. It's only 99 cents and available for all eReaders, smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Get your copy here.

[Q1] The show opened cold with Alberto Del Rio's music playing, and Michael Cole, Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler welcomed us to Raw. Del Rio was in the ring with Ricardo Rodriguez. Del Rio cut a promo and said he would not be disrespected. He said when John Cena hit him with the AA, everybody laughed at him. Del Rio said he took out Rey Mysterio and forced Edge to retire. He said he would teach a lesson to John Cena at Night of Champions. He did his, "My name is" gimmick and said he was the greatest of the great.

Bret Hart's music hit and the place went nuts. He came to the ring and played to the crowd for a minute before getting a mic. He said he wasn't there to disrespect Del Rio, he was there to give him some advice. He said Del Rio had no idea how to be a champion. He dressed him down and called the WWE Championship the World Championship.

Del Rio punked Bret Hart and said he looked like, "One of those illegal Canadians I get to work at my house."

Shore's Slant: HAHAHAHAHAHA

Del Rio said he was going make an example out of Hart tonight, but Cena's music hit. Cena walked to the ring to a weird reaction, but it was mostly pop. Cena said he thought Bret looked good as a Hall of Famer. He said Del Rio had finally grown a pair of jalapenos because Del Rio has always run when Cena came out.

Cena said he told the camera, he told the fans, he told "Tattoo from Fantasy Island" (Ric Rod) and now he was telling Del Rio to his face; he is going to beat Del Rio at Night of Champions. Del Rio said they shouldn't wait and they should give the people what they want tonight. Cena said OK, and Del Rio tried to book Ric Rod vs. Cena. Cena tried to book Del Rio vs. Bret Hart. John Laurinaitis came out and booked a tag match between Cena and Hart vs. Ric Rod and Del Rio…The announce team hyped Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes for later…[C]

Shore's Slant: The opening was barely passable when Cena came out. And when he started the "I told everybody" stuff it killed it. Because we all know he's going to win. He never loses when he talks like that. Ever. Not anything approaching clean anyway. And so I don't care to see this match anymore. Cena did the opposite of what he was sent out there to do, at least with me. He needs a refresh so bad it's beyond pathetic at this point.

[Q2] 1. John Morrison and Alex Riley defeated Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger (w/Vickie Guerrero) at 2:42. Ziggler and Morrison started. Morrison hit the chuck kick and took control. Ziggler fought back, but refused to tag Swagger. Morrison hit a Pele kick right after that, and both men made hot tags. Riley ran in and stank up the joint and tossed Ziggler to the floor. Swagger hooked the ankle lock, but Riley kicked him into Ziggler. Riley hit his finisher, and Ziggler refused to break up the pinfall attempt. Post-match, Vickie screamed at Ziggler and Ziggler screamed at Swagger…

Backstage, Josh Matthews asked Miz and R-Truth if their feelings about Triple H had changed. Miz took the mic, turned the logo upside down, and he and Truth walked off while Miz cut his promo. He asked that because Triple H made the logical call to put them in the tag title match that things were just supposed to be fine after that?

Miz turned the mic over to Truth who said he agreed with Triple H and thought it was a good call. Miz did his "Really?" bit and Truth said "Ninja, please." Miz made him repeat it. They continued the promo to the ring and said they should main event every PPV. Miz took the mic back and said at NoC, Air Boom was gonna get got. Truth took the mic back and said, "And that's awesome!" They chest bumped into commercial…[C]

Shore's Slant: So much here. John Morrison has been reduced to teaming with Alex Riley to get Swagger and Ziggler over. Riley is still green. Miz and Truth are very funny, and yet compelling to watch.

[Q3] 2. The Miz (w/R-Truth) defeated Kofi Kingston (w/Evan Bourne) at 8:19. Miz and Kofi started fast and tumbled to the floor in the first minute…[C] Back from commercial, a video showed Miz hitting his bulldog DDT during the break, and then he hit a regular DDT for two. Kofi rolled through a sunset flip and hit a double stomp to take control. Kofi hit a high cross body for two, but Miz hit a neckbreaker in the corner. He followed with the skull crushing finale for the clean win…

Backstage, Teddy Long was talking to Vickie. He told her Dolph Ziggler would defend the US Title at Nigh of CHampions in a fatal fourway against Swagger, Riley, and Morrison. Vickie complained, and Teddy blew her off. Kelly Kelly walked up and tried to help Vickie. Vickie called her an embarrassment of a Divas's champion and said she couldn't wait for Beth Phoenix to beat her. Vickie said she could beat Kelly, and Teddy booked the match…Cena and Hart were shown backstage…[C]

Shore's Slant: Good match with Miz and Kofi, but the clean win is confusing. I guess the new tag champs retain so the "conspiracy" storyline continues. And the one thing we can say for sure based upon their comments tonight? Vickie Guerrero has seen Kelly wrestle. But this match will be god awful.

[Q4] The Edge celebration on Smackdown this week was hyped, followed by a recap of King and Zack Ryder teaming last week. Back live, David Otunga and Mike McGillicutty stood in the ring. Mike said he was born with a personality and asked King if he knew who his father was. Otunga said he was a Harvard educated lawyer. They told him to bring his partner out.

King took a mic and said he knew Mike's dad, but Mike wasn't his dad. He said Otunga was "just another lawyer" who failed charisma class. King said his partner had loads of charisma. Sheamus's music hit and he made his entrance to a good reaction…

3. Sheamus and Jerry "The King" Lawler defeated Mike McGillicutty and David Otunga at 2:30. King worked for about a minute, and then tagged in Sheamus. Sheamus killed both men, hitting a Brogue kick on Otunga, and then a kick and Irish Cross on McGillicutty for the win. It looked like King was bleeding hardway between his eyes…Backstage, Del Rio found Ric Rod doing girl pushups and drinking milk. He stormed off, frustrated…[C]

Shore's Slant: Yawn. I can't believe Morrison is getting guys over while these two idiots get this time and exposure. Of course they are getting buried in each match so I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to swap these guys out.

John Cena made his entrance with Bret Hart Well, actually he ran in front of him quite a bit. Del Rio and Ric Rod were out next…

[Q5] 4. John Cena and Bret Hart defeated Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez at 3:21. Ric Rod and Cena started. Cena used his red shirt to play Rodriguez as a bull. Ricardo took a punch and then ran to Del Rio, causing a tag. Del Rio ran from Cena, but managed to kick him in the head to take control.

That lasted for a second and Cena squashed him. He went for the AA, but Ricardo grabbed Del Rio, causing a tag. Ricardo tried to plead off, but Cena dragged him in the ring. He hit the five moves of doom, and tagged in Hart. Hart slapped on the Sharpshooter and Ricardo tapped quickly. Post-match, Cena took the mic and said Del Rio ran now, but his destiny would change this Sunday…

A video highlighted 9/11, the Smackdown that aired two days later, and showed various patriotic images as John Cena did a voice over…[C]

Shore's Slant: Too much Cena at one time. We get the Superman bit in the ring, followed by the 9/11 video? It made the second seem gimmicky as opposed to sincere. But I'm so burned out on Cena I probably would have cringed at his voice anyway.

[Q6] 5. Kelly Kelly defeated Vickie Guerrero (w/Dolph Ziggler) at 1:09. Vickie started by stretching, but Kelly hit a Thesz press. Vickie botched a bulldog bump and took the stink face as Swagger came to the ring. Swagger and Ziggler argued, and then Swagger punched Ziggler, which distracted Vickie and allowed Kelly to get the roll-up victory.

Post-match, Vickie rolled to the flor and yelled at both men. Kelly celebrated in the ring. Beth tried to run in, but Kelly knocked her back to the floor, and then escaped to the back, leaving Beth pissed off in the ring…[C]

Shore's Slant: What a waste of three minutes. That made no sense. Beth has to go over Sunday after that, right? Otherwise she loses all credibility. I can't believe anyone thought Kelly could carry Vickie to something that didn't suck. Unreal.

A video hyped Hugh Jackman as a special guest on next week's Raw…JR setup a Triple H hype video…

Backstage, Josh Matthews tried to interview Mark Henry, but Henry told him not to say a word and just listen. He said people are asking why he did all the destructive things he did. He said it was because for 15 years he was never taken serious, and now he is. He said this Sunday he promised Randy Orton is going to enter his Hall of Pain…

Randy Orton made his ring entrance…

[Q7][C] Orton stood in the ring as a video recapped Mark Henry's attack from him on Smackdown. Cody and the baggers were out next…

6. Cody Rhodes defeated Randy Orton at 10:23. Mark Henry started walking toward the ring and Orton chased him off with a chair. He worked over Cody until Henry came back out with a chair and sat at the top of the ramp. Orton started for him, but went back to the ring and got kicked in the face…[C]

Cody worked the arm after the break, but Orton pushed off on a bulldog attempt. Henry came to the ringside area and watched from the chair. Orton hit his rope DDT and struck his viper pose. Henry walked up the stairs and stopped. Orton turned to face him and the ref admonished Henry. Cody took his mask off and hit Orton. He followed with Cross Rhodes for the win.

Post-match, Henry climbed in the ring and hit Orton with a chair across the back. He demanded the belt, and stood over Orton while talking junk…A video hyped Randy Orton and Mark Henry appearing on the Cutting Edge show on SyFy…

Shore's Slant: Would rather have seen Cody go over clean, but that's not going to happen. Still, it's a nice win for Cody, and pushes Orton and Henry down the road some. The commercial hyping them with Edge gives me hope for a good final push on Friday. But I have to admit, I was bored by Orton and Rhodes again. We just saw it three days ago. This SuperShow concept is turning out to be the bad idea I was afraid it would.

[C][Q8] A video recapped the Kevin Nash/Triple H confrontation last week…Triple H made his ring entrance. He climbed in the ring, and CM Punk's music hit, and he came to the ring. Punk started first. He said he respected Hunter for firing Kevin Nash. He said that even though he respected him, he didn't like him.

He said that was OK because Hunter doesn't like him. Hunter said that had changed a little. Punk said that was a problem too. He made the argument that Hunter and Vince were both the same. He tried to make the "body builder guys are the only champions" and Hunter shut him down with names like Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, and Rey Mysterio.

Hunter started the "grab the brass ring" speech, but Punk cut him off and explained how in 2006 he grabbed the ring at Survivor Series where the fans chanted his name, but he still was held back. Hunter listed all the titles and Money in the Bank contracts Punk has had over the years and asked Punk if he was really going to stick to the "held back" story.

Hunter repeated the story Punk told about Cena saying he almost lost hope in Punk. Hunter put over Cena as the biggest star in the industry and said that he was wrong about Cena, because he thought Cena wouldn't make it.

[Overrun] Hunter said none of that mattered because that was business, and this was personal. He said at Night of Champions, he was facing CM Punk not as the COO, or the Game, or anything but a man. A man, that CM Punk insulted, and a man that was going to kick his ass.

Punk said that was great because he was going to kick Hunter's ass too. He said his crusade to end Hunter's reign at NoC was going to be great. He said this wasn't CM Punk talking to Triple H, this was Phil Brooks talking to Paul Levesque. He started to say why his victory would be sweet, but his mic cut off. Hunter handed him his, and it turned off too.

Punk pitched a fit and Hunter told him to say it anyway, he didn't care if the fans heard or not. Punk wouldn't, so Hunter grabbed another mic and asked the sound guy what was going on. He tried to hand the mic to Punk, but Punk just stared at him. He finally took it, and hit Hunter in the face with it. He stood over Hunter for a moment, and then left the ring. Hunter sold the mic shot to end the show…

Shore's Slant: I was digging it up until the end. I didn't like the use of the real names. It's beyond silly to try and make it that personal without saying the business is worked, and there is no reason to ever say out loud that the business is a work. So it fell apart for me there. But I also smell the now being formed with Nash and Punk because of the line from Punk that it doesn't end at NoC.

A fair go home show for Night of Champions, but the US Title match is lame, and everything else except for Hunter vs. Triple H only got mild hype. I'll have more to say later tonight on the Member's only audio review. Thanks for following along with me tonight.
