Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on 9/6/11 in Albany, NY.

[Q1] The Mark Henry Hall of Pain hype video aired…The opening video aired, followed by Mark Henry's music, and Josh Matthews, Michael Cole and Booker T welcomed us to Smackdown. Henry made his ring entrance and cut a promo in the ring about the Hall of Pain. He said Big Show and Kane had special wings in the hall, and Orton would be inducted at Night of Champions.

Henry said people were calling the beating he gave Orton in the cage last week was the worst Orton had ever received. Henry called it a good start. He put himself over as more unpredictable than ever and said he would be the new world champion.

Zack Ryder's music hit and he came to the ring cutting a promo about how he and Henry could be Brokskis. Henry said Ryder must have a death wish. Ryder said he was there for Teddy Long to tell Henry that Henry and Orton would be in action tonight, but not against each other. He said there was also a no-contact stipulation between Orton and Henry as well.

Henry said he appreciated the heads up. He tortured Ryder by being physically dominant in the ring, and then asked him who he thought would win at Night of Champions. Ryder said Beth Phoenix. He tried to leave and Henry grabbed him. He said since he couldn't put his hands on Orton, he had to put his hands on somebody. Ryder attacked first, but Henry bitch slapped him and hit the world's strongest slam…Ezekiel Jackson made his ring entrance…[C]

Shore's Slant: Wow, Mark Henry was strong with his pimp hand! He just backhanded Ryder. Hilarious. Good opening segment. Henry just turned awesome one day and hasn't stopped since. Good for him.

[Q2] 1. Mark Henry defeated Ezekiel Jackson at 2:56. They started with a fingerlock test of strength and Henry cheated when Zeke started to win. Zeke went for the torture rack Henry shoved him away and escaped to the floor. Zeke went to the floor and Henry drove him into the post. Henry hit the world's strongest slam for the win…

The announce team hyped Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes in a Champion vs. Champion match…Backstage, Teddy Long was approached by Aksana, and she asked to ring announce again. Teddy said if she did it all the time, it wouldn't be special. She said ring announcing wasn't the only thing she could do with her mouth…she could also sing. She continued to hit on Teddy and he said he had to go check on Ryder and left Aksana looking pleased with herself…

Shore's Slant: A big man squash on a big man. Don't see too many of them. The Aksana stuff just kills me. As in dead, not laughing. It's so week and juvenile. Sometimes that works, but it's just not here.

2. Sin Cara defeated Tyson Kidd 3:31. Sin Cara ducked several strikes and kicks and then hit the high cross body on the floor early. The announce team argued about Josh Matthews interviewing Sin Cara and Matthews finally agreed to do it. Sin Cara hit his combo finisher for the win.

[Q3] Post-match, Josh Matthews gave a bigoted interview to Sin Cara by talking slow and asking him where the new aggression came from. Sin Cara responded in half English and half Spanish and said he had held back when he first got here, but now no one would hold him back anymore. He said he was the real Sin Cara. Daniel Bryan's music hit and he came to the ring. He challenged Sin Cara to a rematch next week and Sin Cara attacked. He locked in the LaBell Lock until the ref pulled him away…[C]

Shore's Slant: I'm pretty sure this solidifies the "good" Sin Cara vs. the "evil" Sin Cara that has been rumored. I want to be excited about it, but I don't know. Maybe Hunico can carry the load on this one. Hopefully we get a classic from he and Brian next week.

A Cody Rhodes hype video aired…Matt Striker interviewed Randy Orton. He put over Cody and Henry and said he could beat them both…[C]

[Q4] 3. Kelly Kelly defeated Natalya (w/Beth Phoenix) at 2:54. Beth and Natty were both dolled up. Kelly had early control, but Natty attacked her on the floor and took control. She tried to hook the Sharpshooter, but Kelly hooked an inside cradle for the surprise victory…[C]

Shore's Slant: Can somebody explain to me why Beth and Natty keep getting dolled up? I'm not saying they can't be beautiful, they are. But I don't understand what it serves from a storyline purpose. They don't want to be the "doll" Divas, but they keep getting dolled up? I just don't get it. And Kelly still sucks. Learn to run the ropes for the love of God. Seriously, if she could at least run the ropes, I would leave her alone.

Tony Chimel tried to introduce the next match, but Christian's music cut him off. Christian came to the ring and said the following match, and all the matches, had been postponed. He whined about getting beat up on Raw the night before his title match. He said he deserved, "One more--"

Sheamus's music cut him off. He came to the ring telling a story about some puppies. Christian told him to shut up. Sheamus climbed in the ring and said he wanted to get his match started. He said Christian was out of chances, matches, and excuses, but he was going to get out of the ring. Christian left the ring without any physicality. He walked up the ramp as Barrett made his ring entrance…

[Q5] 4. Sheamus defeated Wade Barrett by disqualification in 11:00. The first three minutes was basically clubbing blows, and then Barrett locked on a rest hold…[C] Barrett hit a side slam out of commercial, and then hit a big boot in the ropes that sent Sheamus to the floor. Sheamus powered back and hit a powerslam for a big pop. He hit his 10 forearms in the ropes, and then a shoulder tackle from the top.

Christian ran in and caused the DQ. He and Barrett attacked Sheamus, but Sheamus powered out. He hit the Brogue kick on Barrett, and lifted Christian for the Irish Cross. Christian escaped and he and Sheamus stared at each other…[C]

Shore's Slant: Didn't we just see this match? Like two or three weeks ago? Are they really that far out of ideas at this point? Unreal. An OK match from Barrett and Sheamus, but they gave away the Christian run-in with how they set it up.

A video hyped Edge's appearances on Haven…

[Q6] 5. Air Boom defeated Jinder Mahal and the Great Khali at 3:09. Bourne and Mahal started. Mahal hit a big clothesline to knock Bourne out of the air. The heels worked Bourne until Jinder made a mistake. Bourne got the hot tag and Kofi attacked. Jinder hooked a roll up and Bourne ran in. Khali tossed Bourne to the side and Jinder yelled at Khali before slapping him. Khali shoved Jinder into the Trouble in Paradise. Kofi covered Mahal for the win, and Khali left Jinder in the ring...

The announce team ran down the current Night of Champions card…Cody Rhodes and bag men made their entrance…[C]

Shore's Slant: That should have been a better payoff. Jinder and Khali went from interesting to lame, and then they gave us the Khali turn when no one cared. Nice work WWE.

[Q7] Back from commercial, Cody stood in the ring and a video recapped his attack on Ted DiBiase two weeks ago. Cody cut a promo and said he remained an inspiration. He said he's been surrounded by jealous people his whole career. He said he tried to inspire Ted, but Ted was happy being Ted, so he dropped him. He said as Ted sank, the Intercontinental Championship floated to the top.

He said Orton called him unstable, and said there was a thin film between unstable and thriving, so Orton had inspired him to be as unstable as he could be. Orton's music hit and he came out to a good pop…[C]

Shore's Slant: Good mic work from Cody here. His character isn't progressing as quickly as I would have hoped, but it is finally progressing. I've heard this match is awesome. Can't wait.

6. Randy Orton defeated Cody Rhodes at 15:08. Orton took early control on Cody, but Cody hit a head-but with the facemask to turn the tables. Orton head-butted him back after a minute, and Cody sold. What the hell?

[Q8] Orton missed a knee drop, but tried to hook Cody for the rope DDT. Cody slipped out and hit the beautiful disaster that sent Orton to the floor…[C]

Back from commercial, Rhodes continued to work Orton. He hit a stiff Alabama Slam for two. He went for a bulldog, but Orton shoved him off. Orton hulked up and hit his chain offense of clotheslines and the scoop slam. Cody went to the floor, but Orton caught him on the apron and hit the rope DDT.

Orton went for the RKO and Cody rolled to the floor. Orton chased and they slid back in the ring. They reversed a ton of moves on each other, and Orton ducked the Beautiful Disaster kick and hit the RKO for the win.

Post-match, Mark Henry's music hit and he came to the ring. He and Orton stared off, and then Orton attacked. Henry sold several punches, but then clubbed Orton and hit back to back World's Strongest Slams. He brought a chair to the ring and opened it up, set it over Orton's throat and sat down. Henry yelled that he could break Orton's leg, but that wasn't his agenda. He said he wanted the world title…

Shore's Slant: Good main event that started slow and built to a fun end. The crowd wasn't really into it for whatever reason. They were either into the post-match beat down more, or WWE piped sound in there. I liked what they did with Henry. I don't want him to win at NOC, but only because I don't want to see the title change hands again so soon. Otherwise I think he deserves a run.

A fair show that kept me interested for most of the two hours. I'll have more to say tomorrow in the hitlist and Jake Barnett will join me for an "All Access" Podcast tomorrow as well. Thanks for reading along with me tonight. I'll see you then.
