7/1 Powell's ECW Live Coverage: Mark Henry's first appearance as ECW Champion, Matt Hardy and Finlay and Hornswoggle vs. John Morrison and The Miz and Chavo Guerrero

ECW on The SciFi Network
Taped in Tulsa, Okla.
[Q1] A video recapped Mark Henry beating Kane and Big Show to win the ECW Title... The opening montage aired... Mike Adamle introduced the show and said there would be "a lot of great, great matches"...
Mark Henry was introduced as the new ECW Champion. Tazz chimed in on commentary and put over Henry's title win. Henry took the mic and deemed himself the "savior of ECW." He said Kane was going to take the ECW Title to Raw, but he brought it back with him to ECW. The crowd booed.
Henry continued to boast until Tommy Dreamer's music interrupted Henry's promo. Dreamer and Colin Delaney walked to the ring. Dreamer said he was there to be the first person to challenge Henry for the ECW Title. The crowd cheered. Henry laughed and said Dreamer's time has passed. He said he knows he was a big deal in ECW back in 1998, but this is 2008. He said Dreamer should take his little friend and walk.
Dreamer said Colin represents what the heart and soul of ECW is all about. "Every time he gets knocked down, he gets right back up," Dreamer said. "Every time he gets beaten in a fight, he comes back for more."
Dreamer questioned whether Henry was even aware of the ECW Title legacy. He pointed out Tazz and said he broke his neck for the ECW Title. Henry said Dreamer doesn't deserve a title shot. "You have to earn a title shot." Henry reconsidered. "Thank you, champ," Dreamer said. He said he's going to wrestle tonight like he's never wrestled before.
Henry cut off Dreamer and said he wasn't referring to him. He said he'd wrestle Colin, and Colin could beat him then he'd give Dreamer a title match. Delaney bravely accepted. Henry said Dreamer was right in saying that Colin has the heart and soul of ECW in him, "but tonight the heart and soul is going to get ripped out of your little chest"...
A backstage shot showed Hornswoggle clowning around with Finlay and Matt Hardy. Adamle sad they would face John Morrison, The Miz, and Chavo Guerrero after the break...
Powell's POV: Nice mic work by Henry and Dreamer. Good verbal exchange. Henry had some nice lines and Dreamer was more effective in putting over what the original ECW stood for than he has been in a while. By the way, the Raw commercial that aired during the break put over the "new roster of champions" and stressed that anything can happen.
[Q2] 1. Matt Hardy and Finlay and Hornswoggle beat John Morrison and The Miz and Chavo Guerrero (w/Bam Neely) in 11:25. Chavo tried a baseball slide into Finlay, who was standing at ringside. Finlay pulled up the apron in what has become one of his signature spots. The tag champs ran over to help Chavo, but Horny dove onto them before the break. [C]
Tazz mentioned that Chavo had warned in a WWE Magazine article that Hornswoggle would face unspeakable consequences if he even tried the Tadpole Splash on him. Sure enough, Horny hit the move late in the match and then Finlay followed up with the Celtic Cross for the win...
Powell's POV: Good action down the stretch. I don't like watching Horny compete on a regular basis, but I'm all for moving him into a program with Chavo. Anything that keeps Chavo out of title matches is cool with me.
[Q3] The announcers hyped Henry vs. Delaney for later in the show... [C] A lengthy Raw recap aired...
Powell's POV: Just imagine what it's like to be someone who watches ECW and doesn't watch Raw. C.M. Punk and Kofi Kingston left the brand last week and now both are big players on the Raw side. By the way, I know there aren't many people who watch ECW and not Raw, but I'm sure there are a few people who fall into that category because of work schedules, etc.
At ringside, Adamle and Tazz discussed the World Title change. Tazz congratulated Punk and pointed out that he's an ECW alumnus... Backstage, a confident Colin told Dreamer that he wanted to beat
Backstage, Teddy Long and Tiffany were speaking with new signee Atlas Ortiz when Armando Estrada interrupted them. Atlas offered his hand, but Estrada said he doesn't care who he is. Long booked them in a match... [C]
Powell's POV: Atlas Ortiz is Atlas DaBone. He's debuted in OVW in January 2007 and has been working in WWE developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling. His wikipedia site notes that he has a football background and had a stint in Vince McMahon's XFL.
[Q4] 2. Atlas Ortiz pinned Armando Estrada in 6:05. Slow match. Ortiz used a headlock and the live crowd was bored. The crowd didn't really care about the match until Armando asked, "How do you like me now." They booed, but were still uninterested in the match. They picked up the pace down the stretch and Atlas threw an impressive dropkick at one point. In the end, Atlas used a backslide to pin Estrada... [C]
Powell's POV: I don't care for Ortiz's look. He wore red jogging pants and tennis shoes during the match and his hair is similar to Carlito's. He didn't blow anyone away in his debut, but we'll see where he's at in a few weeks. They must have some confidence in Atlas to leave him out there for six minutes in his television debut.
[Overrun] 3. Mark Henry squashed Colin Delaney (w/Tommy Dreamer) in a non-title match in 2:40. Dreamer gets a title shot if Delaney wins the match. Henry was all smiles before the match. Dreamer played cheerleader at ringside while Henry tossed Colin around like a ragdoll. In the end, Henry powerslammed Colin for the win...
Powell's POV: Uneventful show. I guess the Ortiz debut is somewhat newsworthy, but there wasn't anything else that stood out this week. Where was Evan Borne to liven things up?
