7/15 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Final hype for MITB, Ezekiel Jackson vs. Ted DiBiase for the Intercontinental championship, and Shamus vs. Sin Cara
Jul 15, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on 7/12/11 in Uncasville, Conn.

[Q1] The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Michael Cole and Booker T welcomed us to Smackdown. They hyped MITB, Randy Orton vs. Kane, and Zeke vs. Ted Jr...

Josh Matthews stood in the ring and introduced Randy Orton. Orton made his entrance and Matthews asked if Orton could control himself Sunday. Orton said he would not be disqualified because he could beat Christian any number of ways. He said this was just a cheap gimmick for Christian to try and get the hands on his title.

Christian appeared on the screen and said he didn't want to win by disqualification. He said his attorneys made him put the stipulation there. He said he just wanted to have a good match. He said first he had a present for Orton and showed a frames photo of Christian standing over Orton holding the belt.

Orton said that was pathetic. Christian said kind of like Orton's family and ran down Cowboy Bob. Orton said he was having a hard time hearing him and told him to come to the ring. Christian said he would come to the ring next week as the World Heavyweight Champion.

Orton said he wasn't going to get his title, and Christian would be exposed as the whiney, bitchy act whose only claim to fame was his best friend helping him win the title for five days…A video hyped the Mark Henry vs. Big Show face-off for tonight…[C]

Shore's Slant: Good opening segment. Both guys were very believable, and they played nicely to the stipulation. I hate the stipulation, but they progressed the story nicely, and maybe we will see some fun stuff with Orton trying not to lose it.

[Q2] 1. Ezekiel Jackson defeated Ted DiBiase to retain the Intercontinental Championship at 3:44. Ted slapped Zeke and Zeke went nuts to start. He clotheslined Ted over the top rope, but when he followed, Ted dropkicked Zeke into the post and took control. Cody Rhodes was shown backstage watching on a monitor.

Zeke powered back and hit his set of slams. On the third, Ted slipped out and tried for Dream Street. Zeke drove him back to the buckle and then lifted for the torture rack for the win…The announce team hyped most of the remaining matches…[C]

Shore's Slant: Sleepy match. Three minute title matches are pretty disgusting to me, and this is why. The title gets no glory from a match that quick, and both guys just tread water. It just shows how weak the booking in WWE has become. It isn't garbage like in TNA, but it's the same old, same old.

Backstage, Cody confronted Ted. Ted said he tried. Cody told him to put a bag on his head and said it was for losers. Cody said he would give him one more chance, but if he lost again, he was going to come to the ring and put a bag on Ted's head. Cody grabbed some random guy backstage and put the bag on his head before walking off.

[Q3] Daniel Bryan made his ring entrance followed by a video that recapped his feud with Cody. Cody was out next with his bags and bag men…

2. Cody Rhodes defeated Daniel Bryan at 11:04. Both guys started fast and Bryan took control. He drove Cody to the floor and hit a suicide dive. Cole put a bag over his head and mocked Booker T. I have no idea why…[C]

Back from commercial, Cody Rhodes was in control, but they didn't show us how. Cody worked the leg in a single crab three times, and out of nowhere, Bryan started attacking Cody. Cody survived the onslaught and hit an Alabama Slam for two. Bryan came back with a LaBell Lock on the ropes that fell apart and he fell to the floor.

Rhodes hit a missile drop kick for a near fall. He set Cody on the trop and climbed up, but Cody racked him on the top rope. Cody hit the Beautiful Disaster to knock Bryan off the ropes and scored the pin…

Backstage, Teddy Long was on the phone with someone. A ref came in and Teddy said for him to tell Show and Henry that if there was any physicality between them, he would cancel their match at MITB. The ref left and Kane stormed in. He thanked Teddy for giving him his match with Orton.

[Q4] Kane said something was wrong with him. He said he was becoming less a monster and more a human. Teddy said if it helped, Kane was scaring the hell out of him. Kane said that was the problem, if Teddy was really scared, he wouldn't have the guts to say anything to Kane…[C]

Shore's Slant: Good match from Cody and Bryan. I could tell they were holding back a little, but I expect this feud to continue a little while so that's OK. The Kane stuff is kind of silly, but at least he isn't playing air trombones anymore.

Backstage, a photographer was shooting Jinder Mahal and Great Khali. The photographer started shooting just Khali, and Jinder went nuts. He attacked the camera man and said that Khali was there to serve and Jinder's face was the only one that mattered…

Christian was shown backstage with Orton's bus and admiring. He went to the other side and flipped out when he saw the graffiti on the bus that read, "Orton Sux! Teddy Long, Christian=Uncrowned World Champ." Christian put it over as messed up and said he would find who did it for Orton because he cared…

Sheamus and Sin Cara made their ring entrances. Wade Barrett had already joined the announce team…[C]

Shore's Slant: Mahal's face was scary big time! But at least we know how this comes to an end. Khali will get abused too many times and break off. So obvious, I hope I'm wrong. And Christian is doing a nice job of putting Orton through anger management.

3. Sin Cara defeated Sheamus at 5:56. Sheamus worked his power offense as Booker T rambled on and on as Cole messed with him. Will they please SHUT UP!

[Q5] Sin Cara tried to come back several times, but Sheamus kept him mostly grounded. Sheamus went for his High Cross, but Sin Cara grabbed his heads with his feet and reversed into a West Coast Pop type move for the win. Post-match, Wade Barrett jumped in the ring and hit a big boot on Sheamus. He followed with Wasteland and posed over Sheamus.

In the Mohegan Sun casino, Christian had a wallet. He opened it up and saw it was Orton's and that it had $1000 in it. He bet it all on "1" on the roulette wheel for Randy's daughter's college fund. He lost it all when the ball landed on "20" and said it looked like Orton's luck ran out…[C]

Shore's Slant: An OK match that did a good job of creating intrigue for the MITB match and gives them several options for these three coming out of the PPV. Nicely done, even if not the most exciting match. The Christian stuff is just funny now. He can pull it off and that's the only reason it's working at all.

Teddy Long was in the ring and said he created this faceoff so they could say what they wanted. He repeated his rules that if they mix it up, he would cancel their match on Sunday. He then introduced both men who made their ring entrances.

[Q6] Henry stopped on the ramp and said he wasn't going any further because he couldn't keep his cool. Show said that was good because he wanted to come down there and choke slam him. Henry said he wasn't slamming anyone. He said Show did this to himself and ran footage of Henry doing the stretcher job to Show.

Show said he did Henry a favor and sparked a fire in him. He said Henry should direct that fire somewhere else because he could put it out. Henry did his "Better is better" line and Show dared him to bring his ass to the ring. Henry started for the ring but Long stopped them. He said it would wait till Sunday and they would "…let God sort it out."…[C]

Shore's Slant: That was very good mic work from Henry and Show. Seriously, very good. It added even more heat to the match this Sunday which I didn't think was possible. But what in the blue hell does Teddy mean? I know the phrase he's using, but does that mean we'll have some sort of gimmick match? Just in case, God I hope not!

4. Kelly Kelly defeated Rosa Mendez (w/Alicia Fox) at 1:49. Squash match that Kelly won with her finisher. Post-match, Fox kind of clapped for Kelly and Kelly nodded at her.

Backstage, Johnny Curtis tried to do a silly ass "cat is out of the bag" joke but pulled out an elephant. He yelled at some old guy named Mikey and said the "elephant in the room" was next week. He ripped the head off the elephant and stuffed it in Mikey's face before walking out…

Shore's Slant: Well. I knew I should have gone to the bathroom. Awful all the way around. Match and segment.

[Q7] The announce team ran down the PPV and then setup a video that hyped the Money in the Bank matches. As always, it was awesome…Christian setup a deleted clip from "That's What I Am" and interrupted it to hurl more insults...

Shore's Slant: Missed most of the Christian thing as the phone rang, but it was the same tongue in cheek stuff he's been doing all night.

5. Justin Gabriel defeated Heath Slater at 2:56. Slater cut a promo on the way to the ring and said Gabriel had been dropping the ball recently and it was time for the one man rock band to shine. After some stalling on the front end, including a chin lock in under two minutes, Gabriel went to the top for his 450. Slater tossed him off the top and went for a moonsault. Gabriel moved and finally hit his 450 for the win…

Shore's Slant: The crowd was so dead for this match, which was a shame because it showed potential. It wasn't exciting at all, but they had very limited time. I think they could entertain if given 10-15 minutes. Well, not Slater. His character sucks, and I don't think he has anything close to "it."

[Q8] A video recapped the C.M. Punk vs. Vince McMahon vs. John Cena segment from Raw…Ring introductions occurred for the main event…

6. Kane defeated Randy Orton by countout at 2:25. Orton went right at Kane, but Kane powered back as Christian walked out on the ramp. Kane hit his top rope clothesline and called for the choke slam. He lifted Orton, but Orton escaped and hit his scoop slam and rope DDT. He did the Viper moves and went for the RKO, but Kane shoved him away. Orton saw Christian on the ramp and stared. He turned around, and Kane clotheslined him over the top rope.

Kane rolled into the ring and Christian ran to ringside. Orton chased him and Christian climbed over the rail. Orton stopped and turned around to get back in the ring, but Christian poured water on him and Orton turned back around. The ref counted ten and called for the bell.

Post-match, Orton tossed Christian back over the rail. Christian ran into the ring and when Orton ran in, Kane attacked. Christian joined in the attack until Kane chased him away. Orton popped up and hit the RKO on Kane, but Christian followed with a spear and punches. Christian got a chair and started to hit Orton, but Orton kicked him and took the chair. Christian ran up the ramp and watched as Orton destroyed Kane with the chair to end the show…

Shore's Slant: That was about what we could expect from the setup all night. I don't believe Orton loses by DQ at the PPV, but they sure planted that seed tonight. Which is why I am going the other way. A mediocre go home show, but it had it's good moments as well. I'll have more tomorrow on the hitlist and the All Access Smackdown Podcast. Thanks for reading and I'll see you then.
