7/1 Kester's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: The contract signing for Christian vs. Randy Orton at Money in the Bank, Kane vs. Wade Barrett, Christian vs. Sin Cara, and Randy Orton vs. Mark Henry
Jul 1, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

WWE Smackdown on SyFy.
Taped earlier in Phoenix, Arizona.

[Q1]The show kicked off with a video package covering Mark Henry's recent path of destruction and his match with Randy Orton for tonight's show.

Backstage, Christian approached Teddy Long with the contract for his title shot against Orton for Money In The Bank. Teddy reminded Christian that he didn't win the tag match last week, Mark Henry did. Teddy put Henry over and said if he wins again tongight, the MITB main event may be a thriple threat match or even a one-on-one between henry and Orton. He then banned Christian from ringside for the Henry/Orton match.

The show then went to the ring with Orton making his way out while Cole ranted about this match even taking place. Henry made his way to the ring.

1. Randy Orton beat Mark Henry via countout in 4:26 Henry began the match by manhandling Orton but Orton was able to slither out of his grasp and unload with some fists. Henry quickly regained control and tossed Orton around the ring and slammed him for a near fall.

Orton again tried to battle back but ate a rare big boot from Henry. Henry then stood on Orton's chest before slamming him a few more times. Henry got in Orton's face and started talking trash before calling for the World's Strongest Slam. He went for the move but Orton battled out and started working his own offense. Orton got a near fall after a kneeling DDT.

Henry dumped Orton to the floor and followed him out when Big Show's music hit. He never came out, though, and the ref's count was high. Randy hit the RKO on Henry and dove into the ring before the ten count to win the match.

After the match, Henry went over to the production area and tossed over a few pieces of equipment, and threw a crew member about ten feet before heading to the back… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Looks like Christian found a way to interfere without going to ringside. If so, great job with making him look like an intelligent heel. Henry's intensity is at an all-time high, but they really seem to be making Teddy Long look like an idiot for changing his mind every time we seem him. The match was nothing to really write home about as it barely lasted long enough to mean anything, but I appreciate them starting the show with a match.

[Q2] Back from the break, the announcers recapped what happened during the opening segment.

Daniel Bryan made his way to the ring without music to sell the fact that Henry destroyed the equipment. The announcers recapped Bryan's loss from last week. Ted DiBiase then made his way to the ring as a pretaped promo played.

2. Daniel Bryan beat Ted DiBiase via submission in 13:13 The two worked some chain wrestling in the early going with Bryan having the advantage. Bryan locked in a surfboard stretch on DiBiase.

Bryan went to the top and tried for a missile dropkick but missed and landed on his feet only to turn and eat a standard dropkick from DiBiase. The show then went to break… [C]

Back from the break, DiBiase had Bryan locked in a chinlock. Bryan tried to battle back but DiBiase kept on top of him. Bryan eventually came back and nailed DiBiase with a flying clothesline and a running turnbuckle dropkick.

Bryan worked a kneeling DiBiase over with kicks to the chest and tried to kick him in the head but DiBiase rolled him up for a two-count. Bryan worked the kickout into the LeBell lock but DiBiase made the ropes. Bryan sent DiBiase to the floor and tried to jump on him but DiBiase caught him and rammed him into the barricade.

[Q3] DiBiase rolled Bryan into the ring and got a two-count. DiBiase talked some trash as Bryan rested in the corner and he slapped the prone Bryan. DiBiase set Bryan on the top rope and went for a superplex. Bryan battled back, however and nailed DiBiase with his missile dropkick.

Bryan worked a combo of palm strikes on DiBiase and nailed him with the buzzsaw kick he missed earlier to get a two-count. DiBiase tried for dream Street but Bryan reversed into a front guillotine choke that DiBiase tapped to.

Backstage, Christian once again approached Teddy Long with his contract. Teddy Long then talked about how "the word on the street" was that Christian was seen coming out of the production truck. Christian said he had an alibi and Teddy dismissed it and put Christian in a match with Sin Cara… [C]

Ryan's Rant: I like the fact that they're giving Bryan another way to win a match other than the Lebell lock, which only makes sense considering how they talk about him being a submission specialist. I thought the commercial break midway through would kill the momentum, but these guys did an excellent job, and DiBiase's face looked like he had been legitimately choked over the match.

DiBiase was walking backstage and Cody Rhodes approached him and talked about how May 20th was the last time DiBiase won a match. He referred to Bryan as a "common man" and said if DiBiase can't beat Bryan, then he might as well wear a paper bag over his head.

The announcers took us through all for the events that have happened since Jinder Mahal showed up on Smackdown. Rajin Singh then showed up in a pretaped segment talking about the segment between the Mahals and the Singhs. He talked about how Mahal was jealous of the Khali and he talked about Mahal being his brother-in-law and how Mahal yells at his sister and threatens to humiliate the Singhs by divorcing her if Khali doesn't obey him. He said the WWE Universe needs to fear Jinder Mahal.

[Q4] The announcers then showed a video package putting over Sin Cara... [C]

Ryan's Rant: Well, that's certainly interesting. This program gets another layer to it and really makes Mahal look like a bastard. WWE has a chance here to delve into a culture that is never really exposed in wrestling, and I hope they tread carefully and handle this with some taste. Either way, they have me intrigued for now.

The Money In the Bank briefcase was hanging over the ring and the announcers showed the Smackdown MITB match.

3. Christian defeated Sin Cara in 11:42. Sin Cara had his mood lighting on, and Christian got sent to the floor before the break. Christian complained that he couldn't see because of the lights. Funny… [C]

Back from the break, Christian was beating down Sin Cara while mocking the fans chanting Sin Cara's name. Sin Cara sent Christian to the floor and hit him with a springboard corkscrew cross body. Back in the ring, Christian hit Sin Cara with a shoulder block and went back to grounding the high flyer.

Sin Cara escaped and hit his turnbuckle vaulting arm drag. Christian headbutted Sin Cara's face and sent him to the floor with a back body drop. Christian worked a rest hold once they got back in the ring. Christian then dragged Sin Cara to the ropes and stood on his back while the ropes choked him. Christian went up top and missed a flying headbutt.

[Q5] Sin Cara battled back and hit his flashy offense on Christian. In a rather sloppy spot, Sin Cara reversed a Samoan drop into a roll-up but failed to get Christian's shoulders down. Sin Cara went for his top rope flip bottom finisher but Christian shoved him off and Sin Cara rolled across the ring.

Sin Cara hit his high cross body and got a great near fall. When they got to their feet Christian hit a reverse DDT and got a near fall of his own. Christian went for the Killswitch and Cara got out and went to the top. Christian swept his legs out and nailed Sin Cara with a spear to get the 1-2-3.

The announcers talked about Ezekiel Jackson winning the Intercontinental Championship at Capitol Punishment and about his non-title match with Cody Rhodes after the break... [C]

Ryan's Rant: Very good action from both men, but Sin Cara desperately needs to either work on his spots or work on his communication; whatever his problem is, he needs to fix it because he won't climb the ladder if he's botching spots.

4. Cody Rhodes beat Ezekiel Jackson in 4:08. Jackson absolutely manhandled Rhodes in the early going. Jackson targeted Rhodes' back with clubbing blows and elbow drops.

Rhodes went to the floor and hid under the ring. Jackson went to look for him and Rhodes caught him with a sneak attack before shoving Jackson into the steel post. Back in the ring, Rhodes worked over Jackson's neck and shoulder.

[Q6] Eventually, however, Jackson hit a release suplex that sent Rhodes across the entire ring. Jackson then worked his clotheslines and set up for Slam City, but ted jumped up on the ring apron to distract Jackson. Rhodes took advantage with a Beautiful Disaster to the back of Jackson's head followed by Cross Rhodes for the win… [C]

Ryan's Rant: That match was just way too short, especially after the two we had before it. I'm all for Rhodes going for the IC title, though, as he needs to be doing something while he tries to figure out the next step for his character, so that time might as well be spent hunting for a belt.

Back from the break, Johnny Curtis showed how he paints himself into a corner. That was just bloody stupid.

The Raw Rebound focused on the tables match main event and the earth-shaking promo from CM Punk.

The announcers talked about CM Punk's promo and their reactions to what he said. They hyped an appearance from Vince McMahon on Monday when Kane's pyro interrupted them… [C]

[Q7] 5. Kane beat Wade Barrett in 11:34. The big men exchanged strikes to start the match with Barrett getting the worse end of the deal. Kane slammed Barrett but quickly ate a clothesline. Kane came back and tried for his body slam into a running dropkick but Barrett fled to the floor. Once there, Barrett took advantage and threw Kane into a barricade... [C]

Back from the break, Barrett had Kane in a chinlock that was quickly reversed into a sidewalk slam. Barrett regained control quickly, though, and worked over Kane's midsection with a series of kicks. Barrett choked Kane on the ropes and worked him over with knees in a clinch. He then locked in a camel clutch that Kane fought out of quickly.

Barrett would not be deterred, and sent Kane into the corner. Kane battled out with an uppercut but Barrett slammed Kane and went to the second rope for an elbow drop. He missed, however, and Kane started working his offense on Barrett. Kane came out of nowhere with a cross body in an awesome spot.

Kane went to the top rope and nailed a flying clothesline. He called for the chokeslam but Barrett slipped out. Kane went for the Tombstone Piledriver but Barrett fought out again and hit a black hole slam on Kane. Barrett went for wasteland but Kane battled out and hit a chokeslam, this time succeeding and getting the pin.

The announcers took us back to the opening segment with Henry's loss and subsequent meltdown… [C]

Ryan's Rant: Very good big man match and I think Kane's Tombstone attempt made Barrett look great as Kane usually only goes for that move when he can't put a guy away. Barrett also shook up his style a bit and incorporated a lot of MMA style kicks and punches which only served to make him look that much more brutal. I wish he'd turn that black hole slam into his finisher versus Wasteland. Wasteland has no impact whatsoever whereas the black hole slam does, and a big man like Barrett needs his finisher to have an air of impact about it.

[Q8] Back from the break, Teddy Long was in the ring with the traditional contract signing set up. Teddy introduced "the former World Heavyweight Champion and current number-one contender" Christian, who came out with what I assume is a lawyer. Teddy then introduced "The Viper" Randy Orton, who didn't have a lawyer.

Ryan's Rant: I predict an RKO for the lawyer.

Teddy had the guys take their seats and Christian took his turn on the stick to inform everyone that the lawyer looked over his contract and added a clause that said if there's another botched finish because of the lawyer, he gets an immediate rematch. He said he refuses to get screwed, he deserves the championship, and he knows he can beat Orton.

Orton tried to chime in but Christian cut him off and ran through his accomplishments in their feud. He said the WWE can't save their golden boy anymore. He said Orton cannot beat him and he will walk out of MITB with the title.

Orton said at one point he enjoyed facing Christian in the ring. There was a time when he respected Christian. He said they ha d a great match, and Orton beat him. They then had an epic encounter, and Orton won again. He told Christian that his subsequent whining was comical, but it was starting to make him angry. He told Christian that he's had problems managing his anger before. He told him his lawyer wouldn't get him his championship. He told Christian he will never, ever beat him.

The two locked eyes for a few moments and Orton signed the papers. Christian had the lawyer look over the papers and went to sign them when Sheamus stormed the ring and demolished Orton.

Sheamus then turned his attention to Christian and drilled him with a Brogue kick before doing the same to Orton. Sheamus screamed about the punt he received from Orton, said he'd decapitate him with his bare hands, and tore the contract to pieces. Sheamus walked to the back to end the show.

Ryan's Rant: damn, I really wanted to see the lawyer take an RKO. However, I'll definitely take what we got over that any day of the week. Sheamus looked dominant here, and considering the history surrounding Orton's punt kick, he looks like an absolute beast for returning so quickly. Sheamus is in the MITB match, so I can easily see him winning and going on to cash in on whoever wins the main event.

This was a highly entertaining show with little to no filler. This show absolutely flew by. We didn't even get a Divas match to kill the flow of the show, and all of the matches showcased talent that will be in the MITB match or Smackdown's main event at the PPV. Simply solid booking tonight.

Thank you all for following along with me tonight, and I hope I didn't made you miss my old chaps too terribly. Jake Barnett and Chris Shore will be back next week with their regularly scheduled Smackdown coverage. I'll be back tomorrow morning with my Rundown of tonight's show. Take care, and have a wonderful Independence day.
