6/24 Barnett's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Wade Barrett vs. Ezekial Jackson for the IC Title, Sin Cara vs. Ted Dibiase, and Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes
Jun 24, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Jake Barnett

WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped 6/21 in Hershey, Pa.

[Q1] Josh Mathews welcomed us to the show, and Teddy Long immediately made his way to the ring. Teddy Long said he was there to address the controversial finish of the match at Capitol Punishment, and a few seconds later Christian made his way out to a chorus of boos. Christian demanded another title shot, and Teddy Long introduced the footage that showed Christian's foot was under the bottom rope.

Teddy explained that the ref made a bad call, and he apologized to the WWE Universe, but said the referee's decision is final. Christian yelled that he was screwed and he doesn't care what the WWE Universe thinks. Teddy agreed that Randy Orton's actions after the match were unbecoming of a champion, and then Christian responded and demanded another title shot. Teddy told him he had to earn it, which Christian disagreed with. Teddy then told him he has to win his match tonight against Kane in order to get another shot.

They argued in the middle of the ring while the announce team bickered over the previous segment, and Teddy Long exited the ring and headed up the ramp while Teddy yelled at him from the ring. The announcers hyped the IC title match later in the show.

Barnett's Brief: This was a passable segment, but it didn't really do the feud justice. This really isn't Christian's fault, but the lame finish at the PPV limited what they could do, and this segment was proof of that.

A promo aired for Raw Roulette and HBK's return this coming Monday on Raw.

Sin Cara's music hit and he made his way into the ring. Ted Dibiase made his way out next.

1. Sin Cara defeated Ted Dibiase at 5:15 Sin Cara's blue and gold lights flooded the ring during the match. Both men tied up and Sin Cara started the offense with an arm drag and his La Mistica finisher. Dibiase ended up outside the ring, where Sin Cara vaulted onto the top rope and hit a huge splash on him. He then tossed Ted back in the ring for a near fall. Sin Cara then attempted a springboard splash but got caught with a dropkick mid air for a near fall. Dibiase lifted Sin Cara, but he worked himself into position for a victory roll for a near fall.

[Q2] Dibiase locked in a wrist lock, and then hit a huge clothesline for another 2 count. Ted charged the corner and ended up eating a back elbow. Sin Cara followed up with a dropkick and revved up the crowd. Sin Cara hit a springboard hurricanrana and his signature back elbow. He then followed up with a springboard arm drag, and attempted to hit a springboard splash, but got reversed into a sidewalk slam. Sin Cara hit another version of La Mistica again a moment later and picked up the clean pinfall.

A replay was aired of the finish of the Daniel Bryan and Cody Rhodes from Monday's Raw. The announce team then plugged their match as next.

Barnett's Brief: A much better match from these two this week. Sin Cara's spots looked much better, and Ted was able to hit some impressive offense of his own at various points in the match. Sin Cara picks up another win, but Dibiase seems to remain without a direction.

Cody Rhodes made his way out to the ring with his baggers. He cut a brief promo about washing away the memory of Ted Dibiase's awful performance, and admonished Hershey for making a lot of chocolate and making the country fat. He then attempted some irony and called the crowd vanilla and boring, and told his handlers to bag the crowd. Daniel Bryan came out and interrupted and told Cody he was sick of his crap. He told Cody the cup on his face belongs in his pants. He then told Cody that looks aren't everything, and threw a picture of Polka Dot Dusty on the Titan Tron for a big pop.

Bryan then put over Dusty as inspiring and charismatic, but not the best looking person in the world. He then told Cody that the reason he wears a mask is because he's an arrogant jerk that will never live up to his father's standards.

[Q3] 2. Cody Rhodes defeated Daniel Bryan at 11:37. They worked some chain offense early, with Bryan ending it with a good looking dropkick that cleared Cody from the ring. Cody tore around ringside kicking the barrier while Bryan taunted him from the ring...[C]

Dibiase was at ringside when we got back. Rhodes tossed Bryan to the outside and Dibiase roughed him up. Rhodes hit some strikes and tossed Rhodes back in the ring. Rhodes worked over Bryan with strikes, and locked in a arm bar. He then followed with a side Russian Leg Sweep. Rhodes continued to work a methodic pace. Bryan got out of the way of a knee drop, but was hit with a clothesline and stomps a second later.

Rhodes locked in headlock/hammerlock combination for a moment, but Bryan escaped and hit a running clothesline. He then hit a dropkick and a pele kick, followed by a top rope hurricanrana. A moment later Bryan tried to lock in the LeBell Lock, but was turned away. He rolled up Rhodes for a two count, which was reversed into a two count for Rhodes. They both collided mid ring and were layed out for an 8 count. Dibiase grabbed at Bryan from the apron, but Bryan jumped and hit a splash on Bryan.

Rhodes hit his springboard kick on Bryan, who got caught awkwardly on the top rope. As the ref freed him, Rhodes hit another kick followed by CrossRhodes for the 3 count. Rhodes then put a bag on Bryan's head and celebrated.

Barnett's Brief: The finish ruined that match, which was up until that point very good. It looked like Rhodes mistimed his kick and Bryan was still partially entering the ring, and the backwards fall caused him to get caught in the ropes. It was otherwise a great match, and they really did the best they could with an unfortunate mishap. I hope Bryan was not injured, as it looked pretty painful. The promos from both men to start the match were pretty good. Rhodes was kind of same ol same old, but Bryan didn't waste his first promo opportunity in months. He came across pretty well there.

[Q4] Johnny Curtis said there were rumors about why he hasn't made his debut yet. He said all the haters are wrong, and then had mayo, mustard and ketchup in front of him, and made reference to not cutting the mustard.

Matt Striker interviewed Big Show regarding Mark Henry. Big Show said he was fine after the PPV. He said last week when he knocked Henry out, Mark was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Striker then said he may have lit a fire under Mark Henry, and introduced a video package that showed Henry in a very dominant light. After the package, Striker asked if Show brought this on himself, at which point Henry charged show and knocked over the entire set piece. Show was left laying...[C]

Tony Chimel introduced the IC Title match. Ezekial Jackson made his way out, but was attacked by Wade Barrett before he got to the ring. Jackson kicked him and threw him into the barrier, and then kicked him again once they got in the ring. The ref made sure Zeke wanted to fight before ringing the bell.

3. Ezekial Jackson defeated Wade Barrett at 4:37. Barrett continued the assault after the bell. They traded power moves back and forth, with Barrett getting a near fall after a clothesline. Barrett locked in a chin lock, but Zeke broke free and ate a huge side slam from Barrett a moment later for a near fall. Barrett continued to work over Zeke with stomps and kicks and covered for another near fall. Zeke recovered and hit a huge uranage slam.

[Q5] Both men took time to get to their feet, and Zeke got fired up and hit some huge clotheslines, the last of which knocked Barrett out of the ring. Zeke followed to the outside but ate a big boot. Barrett tossed Zeke back in the ring and set up for Wasteland, but Zeke got out and lifted Wade into the torture rack for the submission victory.

Randy Orton was interviewed backstage. He said he was laughing on the inside when he thought about Christian getting another shot at the title. He said if he does happen, he will guarantee another victory...[C]

Barnett's Brief: Mark Henry's spear of Big Show might have been the most unintentionally funny moment of the year. I think he tripped over a microphone cord running in and then tripped about 4 times on different set pieces attempting to get back up. Barrett and Zeke match inspired nothing but apathy from me, and hopefully will be the merciful end of this feud. The problem WWE has now is finding an opponent for Zeke, who doesn't appear to have any other credible opponents on the horizon.

Wade Barrett was shown walking backstage, and ran into Slater and Gabriel. They called him out for losing his title and his rematch, and he said up until this moment he had forgotten they existed. He said he has already forgotten about the IC Title, and has bigger plans for himself. They then stated they were going to do something he couldn't, and go win a rematch.

The Usos did a Polynesian War Dance and headed to the ring. Impressive. Slater and Gabriel followed.

4. Slater and Gabriel defeated The Usos at 4:25. Gabriel and Jay Uso started. They both hit some fast paced offense until Gabriel knocked Jimmy off the top rope to the outside. He tagged Slater, who hit a elbow drop on a down Jay on the floor. He then tossed him back in the ring and tagged in Gabriel, who hit a suplex and got a near fall. He tagged Slater back in and he locked in a chin lock. Jay fought out, but was quickly brought back down.

[Q6] Gabriel tagged back in and locked in an arm bar on a prone Jay Uso. Jay fought back to his feet in time to hit a big Samoan Drop on Gabriel, who attempted a springboard. Jay tagged in Jimmy. Gabriel tagged in Slater just in time to eat the fury of Jimmy Uso. Jimmy hit some flashy offense, including a charging Rikishi Butt to the face in the corner, and a superkick. Jay took Gabriel to the outside and Jimmy climbed the top rope for a splash on to Slater. Slater got the knees up in time and rolled up Jimmy for the clean win.

Barnett's Brief: Another entertaining match from these four. Last week made Slater and Gabriel out to be chumps, but this week the Usos take a loss without losing much. I hope they keep this feud going, as it is the first life we've seen from the tag division in years.

Yoshi Tatsu was already in the ring after the commercial break, and Jinder Mahal made his way out next with Khali. Jinder didn't wait for the bell and just assaulted Yoshi. He hit a suplex and tossed Yoshi into Khali, who hit his big chop. Jinder hit his full nelson suplex slam onto Yoshi and tossed him out of the ring and grabbed a microphone.

He said this was another example of what one of the most powerful and priviliged men in the world is capable of. He said he's never had to strive to be the best, because he was born the best. He said Khali has had a rebirth and that his only mission now is to serve. He then said nothing can stop the eastern winds from blowing throughout the entire WWE Universe...[C]

Kane made his way out to the ring, followed by Christian.

[Q7] 5. Kane defeated Christian by DQ after Mark Henry Interfered at 17:32. Kane started fast and beat the crap out of Christian in the corner. Christian tried to use his speed, but had no luck early. Kane worked power offense on until he got hung on the top rope. Christian hit a top rope drop kick for a near fall, and stomped on Kane for good measure. Christian stepped on Kane in the corner until a four count.

Christian slowed the action and locked in a chin lock with Kane on his knees. Kane fought out and lifted Christian up for a press slam, but Christian maneuvered into a head scissors and got dumped to the outside. Kane was able to answer the ten count at eight and got back into the ring. Christian climbed the top rope and attempted a splash, but Kane got out of the way...[C]

Kane hit a sidewalk slam as we got back from break for a near fall. He got another near fall after a big uppercut a moment later. Christian set up for the Killswitch, but Kane got out and hit a huge powerslam for another near fall. Christian attempted a sunset flip, but Kane picked him up by the throat. A moment later Christian hit a tornado DDT for a near fall. Christian set up for and went for a spear, but ate a big boot for another near fall.

Christian climbed the top rope and went for a dive but got caught with another uppercut for another two count. Kane followed up with a top rope clothesline, and set up for a big choke slam. Mark Henry interfered with a clothesline and a big splash. Christian got in his face for a second, but begged off and they teamed to toss Kane out of the ring.

[Q8] Teddy Long came out and said Christian can win a title shot by winning a tag match between him and Henry vs Kane and Randy Orton...[C]

Barnett's Brief: Great effort from both men here. Kane and Christian both looked good here, and Henry looked like the monster he should for the interference.

8. Christian and Mark Henry defeated Randy Orton and Kane at 7:25. Christian and Orton started, with Orton picking up steam early hitting a couple of knee drops for an early near fall. Christian pushed Orton into the corner and tagged Henry. Henry put some boots to Orton and tagged Christian right back in. Henry hit a big stomp onto Orton's chest, and hit some clubbing blows before he attempted a big butt splash, but Orton got out of the way. Orton made the tag to Kane, who came in and hit some strikes on Henry and hit a top rope clothesline for two.

Kane attempted a slam on Henry, but Henry fell on top of him. Henry tagged in Christian a moment later, who hit some kidney punches on Kane. Christian distracted the ref briefly, and Henry hit a big headbutt on Kane from the apron. Henry tagged in, and hit a big right hand on Kane for another near fall. Kane crawled towards his corner, but Henry stalked him and continued to hit kicks and clubbing blows to keep him contained. A moment later, Kane hit a chokeslam on Henry out of nowhere, and made the tag to Orton. Orton cleared Christian from the apron, and set up for the RKO on Henry. Christian attempted to come in from behind, but ate a powerslam and an Orton DDT.

Henry recuperated and attempted a World's Strongest Slam. Orton countered out and went for an RKO, but Henry pushed him into Christian and he hit an RKO on him. Orton turned around into a World's Strongest Slam for a pinfall. As a result, Christian earns a title shot.

Barnett's Brief: Very good closing set of matches. Christian and Kane both earned their paychecks tonight, and they found a way to make everybody look good with a clean finish. I liked the pace of the match and all four guys worked in their spots. Christian gets his title shot, Kane got a measure of revenge on Henry with the chokeslam, and Henry keeps his monster cred with a big victory over the World Champ.

The rest of the show was mostly good. The opening segment was mediocre. The Intercontinental Title match was rather boring, but the rest of the show kept my interest and delivered some fun moments. I'll have much more to say over the weekend with my report card, and Chris Shore and I will have an audio review for you up tomorrow as well.
