WWE Smackdown on the CW Network
Taped in San Jose, CA
[Q1] The opening video aired. MVP stood in the middle of the ring for the VIP Lounge. MVP talked about the upcoming draft. He said he wanted to go somewhere where his talents were utilized correctly. MVP said he would outshine everyone, including La Familia, if given the chance.
Vickie Guerrero was rolled out by Curt Hawkins and Zach Ryder. She gave the “Who in the hell are you?” promo to MVP. MVP said his agent tried to call Vickie but she was unavailable. MVP said he did not want to be on Smackdown if she did not want him. Vickie put MVP in a match with Kane…
Matt Hardy made his way through the back in preparation for his match… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: The MVP face turn is in full effect. He looked like a babyface by simply wearing those glasses. I could see Edge retaining and moving on to a feud with MVP, which would be great. I would rather see him as a heel main eventer, but this is a step in the right direction.
1. Matt Hardy defeated Bam Neely (with Chavo Guerrero) in 6:32. Bam is billed from Robbinsdale, MN, the hometown of Ravishing Rick Rude. He looks like a beefed up Basham brother.
Hardy hit an ensiguiri on Neely about a minute into the match. Neely was successful in grounding Hardy. Hardy tried to come back but Neely hit a big boot for a nearfall. He kept the pressure on with a lying chinlock and leg scissors combination.
[Q2] Hardy hit a second rope bulldog for his first nearfall. Hardy went to the top but Chavo grabbed his leg. Referee Charles Robinson removed Chavo from the ringside area. Matt then hit the Twist of Fate out of nowhere for the victory…
Twill’s Two Cents: Decent match. Bam was given a lot of offensive responsibility and he handled it well. I like that the Twist of Fate can come out of nowhere, but I would like to see Hardy get more offense in throughout his matches.
The announcers plugged MVP vs. Kane for later in the show… [C]
Backstage, Edge tried to carry Chavo through a backstage segment. Edge said Vickie would take care of Charles Robinson and he would take care of Matt Hardy next week. Edge asked Chavo to go one on one with Batista. Chavo responded like a wuss. Edge said to trust him…
2. Michelle McCool defeated Layla in 4:00. Cole said he read an interview with Layla where she said being a part of ECW made her more aggressive in the bedroom. Foley read a poem he wrote for Michelle.
Layla was able to knock Michelle from the ropes to the floor. She applied her very physical style and was in control for the first few minutes. Natalya came out the stage and scouted the match. Michelle dodged a closeline attempt and hit a dropkick and closeline. She then hit a belly to belly suplex for a nearfall.
[Q3] Layla went to the top rope but Michelle sidestepped her. She then applied the rolling heel hook, causing Layla to tap out. Natalya looked on as if she was impressed…
Twill’s Two Cents: Once again, this was a decent match. It is widely known that Layla is going to wrestling school and it shows. She is making efforts to improve. Michelle vs. Natalya seems to be the way they are going and it is the right call.
Backstage, Edge approached Vickie. Charles Robinson entered as well. Vickie said Charles has been biased towards Edge and Chavo in his officiating. She said she knew he was a single father and needed this job, so she put him in a match tonight, as a wrestler… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: I hate heel GMs in situations like these. It is one thing to get heat and it is something completely different to abuse power.
3. Vladimir Kozlov defeated Jamie Noble in 3:40. Cole called this the toughest test yet for Kozlov. Noble tried a single leg takedown and a go behind, but Kozlov countered both moves into offensive moves of his own. He then hit a hard shoulder block and Sambo throw.
Noble hit a missile dropkick and then applied a guillotine chokehold. Noble had the hold applied for a good thirty seconds. Kozlov stood up and rammed Noble into the corner to break the hold. Kozlov then hit a very nice overhead belly to belly suplex. Kozlov then hit the battery ram as Noble flew at him from the second rope for the win…
Twill’s Two Cents: Another solid match. Noble was effective with his offense and Kozlov sold it well. He looked impressive on offense as well although that battery ram is a dangerous move. It is time to move Kozlov into a feud. I have a feeling they could make him more interesting by letting him give more of those promos in both Russian and English.
[Q4] The announcers plugged Chavo Guerrero vs. Batista and MVP vs. Kane for later in the show… [C]
4. Kane defeated MVP in a non-title match by countout in 6:59.. The fans did not really react to MVP because they are not sure whether or not to cheer for him. He also does not get his pyro anymore. When the match started, MVP talked smack to Kane’s face and received a right uppercut for his troubles. The announcers sold an injury for Jamie Noble.
Kane grounded MVP with a headlock. MVP took over when he hit a drop toehold on Kane into the turnbuckle. Foley talked about Vickie and Edge’s wedding and wondered if Vickie would change her name to “Vickie Edge.” That reminded me of when Undertaker’s wife was on the show and they called her “Sara Undertaker,” as if that was their last name.
Kane hit a powerslam for a nearfall but MVP regained control. He hit the running kick to the face for a two count. MVP applied an armbar submission and Kane almost scored an inadvertent pinfall. Kane broke the hold by hitting a back suplex. He then hit multiple high impact moves.
Kane hit the top rope closeline and signaled for the chokeslam. MVP went to the ropes but Kane closelined him over the top to the floor. MVP complained about the count and decided not to reenter the ring, causing the countout…
[Q5] Immediately, Mark Henry’s music hit and he came out to the ring. Michael Cole took about ten minutes to notice. Henry hit Kane with the World Strongest Slam and left him lying…
Backstage, Chavo Guerrero wished Charles Robinson luck in his match tonight… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: So far the theme to the evening has been solid in ring action and this was no exception. MVP bounced around like a pinball for Kane. I heavily dislike MVP intentionally getting counted out, but then again, maybe he will remain a heel. By the way, did Chavo Guerrero really appear in three segments in the first hour and still has a match to come? Chavo Guerrero?
They showed footage of WWE’s work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Seeing those kids just breaks my heart…
5. The Great Khali defeated Charles Robinson in 1:25. Hopefully Little Naitch remembers some tricks from Ric Flair. Robinson ran from the ring but was met by Hawkins and Ryder, who deposited him back into the ring. Khali hit a short closeline but pulled him up before the pinfall was counted. Khali hit the big chop and then applied the vice grip, or claw, or whatever he calls it. Robinson’s tongue and eyes almost came out of his head and the referee rang the bell…
Twill’s Two Cents: Robinson actually sold here pretty well. I honestly do not know what the hell this does for Khali, Vickie, or anyone else. That was pointless.
After the match, Foley said Vickie does not make matches anymore, she assigns punishments. The medical crew put Robinson on a board and carried him out… [C]
[Q6] 6. Jesse and Festus defeated Deuce and Domino in 1:38. Deuce and Domino continued their argument as they made their way to the ring. Festus took out Domino as soon as the bell rang. On the outside, Deuce and Domino went at it. Cole said it was like Fonzie and Potsie going at it.
Deuce threw Domino back into the ring so Festus could kick his ass. Festus hit the pancake finisher for the win…
After the match, Deuce entered the ring and looked down at Domino. He then hit the Crack Em in the Mouth. Foley said the tag team of Deuce and Domino jumped the shark…
Twill’s Two Cents: I am a huge Happy Days fan, so it probably comes as no surprise that I have always enjoyed the Deuce and Domino team. However, splitting them up makes little sense to me right now. They are an actual team and WWE needs more teams, not less.
They showed highlights of Finlay knocking out Miz on ECW. Miz and Morrison made their way through the backstage area, as Miz will face Finlay after the break… [C]
7. Finlay (with Hornswoggle) defeated The Miz (with John Morrison) in 4:37.. Finlay and Hornswoggle handed out inflatable shilleglehs to the fans on their way to the ring. Morrison joined the announce booth.
[Q7] Finlay controlled the early part of the match with a lot of physicality. Miz took over and hit the big closeline to the corner. Morrison gave Miz verbal fellatio throughout the match. Miz slowed it down but Finlay hit multiple closelines to regain control. Morrison left the announce booth and grabbed Hornswoggle.
Hornswoggle hit Morrison in the knee with a shillegleh. Miz was distracted and Finlay was able to hit the Celtic Cross for the pinfall victory…
Twill’s Two Cents: This was a short, but solid match between two good workers. I like how Foley put over Miz’s in ring work because he has become a very good hand.
Cole plugged Batista vs. Chavo Guerrero… [C]
In case you missed it, Vince gave away a million dollars on Monday, including $125,000 to a fifteen year old boy. Canadians cannot enter but American minors can? That seems wrong. By the way, did Jesse Jordan seem creepy to anyone else but me?...
Cole and Foley ran down the Night of Champions card. Mr. Kennedy, MVP, and Jeff Hardy are not in matches. That makes as much sense as giving $125,000 to a kid that cannot even drive yet…
[Q8] 8. Chavo Guerrero (with Bam Neely) defeated Batista by countout with Edge as the special guest referee in 5:37. Vickie rolled out to the stage with Chavo and Bam. She said Charles Robinson was supposed to be the referee but he was in no condition to work, so she appointed Edge as the special guest referee. She said Batista would be removed from the title match at the PPV if he touched Edge… [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Okay, if Vickie were a male GM, we could look forward to someone kicking his ass. However, we all want to see Vickie get hers, which means she is doing a great job, but how exactly are we going to get our payoff? I do not want to see her get beat up, unless they can grab Awesome Kong for a night to kick her ass. Now that would be a payoff.
Edge was actually humorous here. Foley made a nice point of saying when Edge told Chavo to trust him, Charles Robinson had not yet been hurt. He then said he was a special guest referee in the past, including at a Wrestlemania when Stone Cold faced The Rock. Actually, that was at Wrestlemania X-Seven and he refereed the Vince McMahon vs. Shane McMahon street fight.
Like Michael Cole said, I really do not know how to call this. It was ridiculous. Edge interfered. He allowed Bam to interfere. He counted slowly for Batista and very quickly for Chavo. Even with the quick counts, Batista kicked out.
Batista hit a backdrop, two closelines, and a running powerslam. Bam Neely then pulled him from the ring. Edge counted to ten faster than an elementary school kid waiting for the water fountain…
After the match, Batista entered the ring and gave Chavo a spinebuster. The rest of La Familia used the five on one advantage to lay out Batista as Vickie looked on from the ramp. Chavo hit a frogsplash and Edge hit a spear. All five men stood with their arms raised triumphantly as the show went off the air…
Twill’s Two Cents: Ugh. Haven’t we seen that before? This seems useless too unless Batista wins the title and I doubt they are going that way at the PPV. Vickie has always been more annoying to me than anything. I will give her credit for doing a good job in her role, but I just would rather not have her on my TV.
What did you think of the show? There were a lot of matches and some of them were good. Drop me an email with your opinion of the show. I can be reached at dotnetrich@gmail.com.
