May 6, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on 5/3/11 in Orlando, Fla.

[Q1] A video put over Christian winning the World Title as fulfilling his dream…The show opened with Christian being introduced to a good pop as Josh Matthews, Michael Cole and Booker T welcomed us to Smackdown.

Christian made his ring entrance and let the fans cheer for a moment. He said he had been waiting seventeen years to "do this" and held the title up with both hands. He said he had dreamed about how it would be, feel, etc. He said his dreams paled in comparison to the reality of being the World Champion.

He said just before he came out he got a text message from Edge telling him to enjoy it because he earned it. He said he was enjoying every second of it. He said he loved Edge and looked ready to cry. He said the crowd was all his peeps and he was going to do his best to be their champion.

Mark Henry's music hit and he came to the ring. He congratulated Christian on his win and said he was cheering for him. He said he was cheering for him because he wanted to be the first to get his hands on the title. Christian asked him if he realized it was made of gold and not chocolate. Henry laughed and said Edge wasn't here to protect him anymore.

Great Khali's music hit and he and Mini-Me came to the ring. Khali said, "Blah flah glah hah…" Fortunately Singh translated that Khali wanted a title shot. Christian asked if there were anyone else. Randy Orton's music hit and he came out to a great pop.

Orton said he was new to Smackdown, but if this is how they did things around here, he wanted to throw his hat into the ring to get a title shot. Teddy Long's music hit and he came out and said a decision had to be made, but he wasn't going to make the decision. He said he was going to let the crowd choose who Christian would face.

The crowd was chanting "Randy" before they even started. He asked anyway, and the fans overwhelmingly chose Orton. Long announced it would be tonight and they faced off in the ring…

[Q2] A replay of the Rock's birthday was hyped…[C]

Shore's Slant: I think Christian showed right there why I don't think that much of Christian. That room was not bad at all, but I wanted to fall asleep in the middle of it. He just doesn't have that elusive "it" factor a true main eventer needs. That said, I have bad feelings about him facing Orton, for all the reason why I didn't want Orton on the show.

Backstage , Khali and Mini-Me were walking and talking. Jinder Mahal, the guy from last week, walked up and said he was here, and things would get better now. Khali walked off and Singh said he had Khali's career on track. Mahal asked if it was Singh that had Khali wear the pink tutu on Raw. Singh tried to stammer an answer and Mahal said he was just curious and walked off…

1. Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan at 9:39. Sheamus took quick control. Bryan got in a couple of chops that serious turned Sheamus's chest red. Sheamus whipped Bryan on the apron into the post …[C]

Back at 5:56, Sheamus worked an armbar. Bryan escaped and Sheamus hit a backbreaker. He tied Bryan in the ropes and hit several clubbing blows. Bryan stormed back and hit a missile dropkick. Bryan hit several kicks to a kneeling Sheamus for a great near fall.

[Q3] Sheamus came back and tried for Pale Justice. Bryan slipped out and reversed a shoulder tackle into the Label lock. Sheamus made the ropes and rolled to the floor. Bryan tried for a dive, but Sheamus hit a Brough Kick through the ropes and then hit another in the ring for the win…

Shore's Slant: That was the match we thought they could have. Both guys were impressive here, and I hate someone had to lose. Just a great TV match that did Sheamus a ton of good and didn't make Bryan look terrible.

Cody Rhodes came out in a suit and the mask. He paused on the ramp and motioned for his assistants with the bags to come out. They followed him to the ring as the announce team explained what happened in his match at Extreme Rules.

The lights were off for Cody as he cut a promo about how Mysterio added insult to injury. He said even though it was a loss in the record book, he exposed Rey for the cheat and coward that he is. He said at least he didn't have to feel that hate from Rey anymore because he was drafted to Raw.

He said even though his eyes still burned, he could still see their ugliness and had his assistants hand out the bags. He told everyone to cover their faces, because while his face might disgust them, their ugliness offended him…

Shore's Slant: I'm digging the Cody Rhodes character, but I don't think he gets over with the casual fans The crowd was pretty dead except for the cheap heat of calling them ugly. And even that wasn't great.

[Q4] The announce team narrated still pictures of the Tag Team Title match at Extreme Rules. They sold it as Zeke being a monster in the match. Big Show made his entrance, followed bu Zeke and the Corre. Zeke was not wearing his shirt. Before they could lock up, Kane made his entrance…[C]

2. Ezekiel Jackson (w/The Corre) defeated Big Show (w/Kane) at 3:11. They locked at and Zeke shoved Show away. Show scored a takedown into a front face lock. Well that was neat. Jackson made his feet and back body dropped Show. He acted surprised and then covered for two.

Zeke body slammed Show for two and worked a side headlock. Show powered out with a back suplex. He hit several shoulder tackles and called for the choke slam. The Corre jumped on the apron and Kane ran over and attacked them. They got the best of him and Show made the save. When he climbed back in the ring, Zeke hit a big clothesline for the win. Post-match, Corre climbed in the ring to celebrate, but Zeke left…[C]

Shore's Slant: I have no idea what they are doing with the Corre, but that was at least interesting from the Zeke vs. Show stand point. It was much better than I thought it would be. In fact, it was pretty good. I'll hold off on killing the Corre for one more week I guess.

[Q5] A video recapped the Rock's birthday celebration on Raw. The first two minutes of the video were in the last quarter…Booker T overhyped the World Title main event…[C]

The WWE Rewind was Layla defeating Michelle McCool on Extreme Rules…Layla made her entrance to McCool's music, followed by Alicia Fox…

3. Layla defeated Alicia Fox at 0:50. Alicia went right at Layla, but Layla hit the Layout out of nowhere to win. Post-match, Kharma's music hit and she did her entrance. Layla rolled to the floor while Alicia stayed in the ring. Layla left and Kharma watched. While her back was turned, Alicia kicked Kharma.

Kharma no sold the kick and Alicia tried another. Kharma caught her foot and clotheslined her to the mat. Alicia grabbed her shoulder and Kharma hit her move to leave Alicia laid out.

[Q6] Backstage, the Corre found Zeke. They asked him what happened and Barrett said it didn't matter. He said they couldn't be seen letting him walk out on them. He said he wanted Zeke to look at him so he could see it coming. Zeke stood up and said, "Better make it worth it. He attacked the Corre, but the finally beat him down and slammed everything in the locker room on him. They left Zeke laid out with a box on top of him…[C]

Shore's Slant: In case you didn't hear, Alicia was legit hurt in that spot. The clothesline didn't look too brutal, and it was the shoulder that hit the mat that was hurt. And I'm still interested what happens to Zeke now.

4. Sin Cara defeated Tyson Kidd 2:48. Chavo Guerrero joined on commentary and he spent the entire match putting himself over as doing all of Sin Cara's moves before. He even called him a thief. There were moves all over the place, including a great series of a ducked springboard back elbow into a tilt-a-whirl head scissors. Sin Cara hit his top rope finisher for the win. Post-match, Chavo climbed in the ring and shook Sin Cara's hand…

A video hyped the "It's What I Am" movie and the anti-bullying campaign that came up around it…Backstage, Todd Grisham asked Teddy if it was fair for Christian to have to defend his title. Teddy said it wasn't about being fair, it was about giving the fans what they wanted, and they wanted that match…[C]

Shore's Slant: Crazy match with Kidd and Cara. It's short, but still packed with action. Looks like Chavo is going to be Cara's first real program. Good for him. That match should be off the charts.

[Q7] 5. Randy Orton defeated Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship at 17:20. The match started hot with Orton taking quick control. Christian came back and back dropped Orton over the top. He tried for a plancha, but Orton moved…[C]

Back at 5:34, Orton worked stomps on Christian and covered for two. Orton hit several knee drops and covered again for a near fall. Orton hit a strong whip for yet another near fall.

[Q8] Orton clotheslined Christian over the top to send it back to commercial at 8:01…[C]

Shore's Slant: I hope this finish is hot because that's two commercials in not even two and a half minutes.

Back at 11:30, a video of the clothesline before the break showed Orton accidentally kicked Christian in the head. Christian had control in the ring, but Orton hit a back suplex to reset things. They traded blows and Orton hit a standing dropkick to take control.

Orton hit several clotheslines. He whipped Christian to the corner and charged in. Christian hit the pendulum kick and a missile dropkick for two. Orton escaped a reverse DDT attempt, but Christian hit a high cross body for a great near fall.

Christian hit the second rope forearm, but Orton hit his scoop slam for two. Christian hit a drop toe hold that dropped Orton on the ropes. Christian tried for his punch, but Orton moved. When Christian tried to hustle back in, Orton hit his rope DDT for two.

Orton tried for an Angle Slam, but Christian reversed into a reverse DDT for another great near fall. Orton hit the Angle Slam and setup for the RKO. Christian shoved away on the attempt and kicked Orton. He went for his springboard sunset flip, but Orton reversed into the RKO for the win.

Post-match, the announce team put Orton's win, and Christian's loss, way, way over. Orton left the ring, and Christian sold being devastated over losing. He got plenty of cheers from the crowd, but he put it over big in the way he carried himself after the match. He walked to the back to end the show…

Shore's Slant: OK, before we go any further, HOLY HELL WAS THAT RKO COOL! That was done perfectly. I don't know if it was as good as the Shooting Star RKO, but it was pretty close. And overall it was a fantastic match. In all seriousness, I think that may be my favorite Orton match of all time. It was that good for him.

Now, as to the title change. I had read the spoilers and was aware it would happen. That said, I tried to keep an open mind about it and judge it based on what we saw. And here's what is definitely going on: Christian is turning heel. They went out of their way to put over how important the title was to him, and now that he's lost it, he can get obsessed with it.

Even though I'm not a big Christian fan, I would have liked him to keep the title, but I am also willing to see where this goes because there is a story here. The problem is I don't think I will like the ending. But I will wait and see. I'll have more to say tomorrow on the hitlist. Thanks for reading and I will see you then.
